This is with a lot of joy that we let you discover the new edition of our magazine Destination. We live in Sainte Maxime and to better transcribe this passion and make you share, we chose to offer you a magazine thought and developed internally. We have not used any communication agency at the risk of having a distorted, embellished and formatted reality in order to best meet consumption standards. So, it is true that this edition may present some imperfections, we are aware of it and we are proud of it. This development is a team effort in which everyone contributed, from the small photo stolen on the edge of corniche in the morning going to work, passing by the will to make discover the Whale Watching returning from an exceptional day trip. The major events

of the year

Sainte-Maxime proposes an eclectic program throughout the entire year. The events are rich and varied, many of which are not-to-be-missed. The Sainte-Maxime Free Flight World Masters, the Rallye du Var, the Mimosa Festival, the End of the Year Festivities, the indoor Ice-Skating rink or the Gala Events are so enjoyable that they delight the young and old alike.

FEBRUARY The Mimosa Festival During 2 days, Sainte-Maxime adorns itself with the mimosa and starts off the season of Côte d’Azur parades and Carnavals. Floats covered with mimosa and fresh flowers, musical groups, and walking groups of all kinds add to the battle of confetti and mimosa vines assuring a joyous ambiance throughout downtown. Sainte-Maxime on ice indoor ice-skating rink Because winter vacation does not always rhyme with snowy slopes, Sainte-Maxime invites families to its 450 m² covered ice-skating rink to enjoy moments of conviviality and all the excitement of skating on ice.

APRIL MIMOSA FESTIVAL Mimosenfestes

Sainte-Maxime Jet Cup For the last 7 years, Sainte-Maxime has welcomed the first leg of the French Jet Ski Championship and the Southern Grand Championship. Over 140 jet ski riders at the highest international level from all over France face each other in the bay of Sainte-Maxime for an exceptional show.

MAY Harley Davidson Gathering The township of the Gulf of Saint Tropez welcomes over 10,000 bikers from all over Europe during the Eurofestival of the Trademark. A rock atmosphere and the gushing of motor chrome provides a very particular setting. Fest’Italia A colorful festival with Italian flavors in an exhibition village, where traders and craftsmen, offering products come directly from Italy, with typical animations and bands strolling around the town. Votive Festival On the 14th and 15th of May, Sainte-Maxime reconnects with Provençal traditions and commemorates the anniversary of the death of its saint. During these two days, the patron saint is honored during masses and processions all over the town chaperoned by a «bravado» composed of a folkloric group, fifes and drums and the outstanding «Bravadeurs» muskets.

DIE WICHTIGSTEN VERANSTALTUNGEN DES JAHRES Sainte-Maxime bietet das ganze Jahr über eine ausgewählte Programmgestaltung. Es gibt umfangreiche und abwechslungsreiche Events, unter denen einige ein Muss sind. Das Sainte-Maxime Free Flight World Masters, die Rallye du Var, das Mimosenfest, die Festtage zum Jahresende, die Eishalle oder die Gala-Abende sind alles Veranstaltungen, die Kleine und Große erfreuen. FEBRUAR Mimosenfest 2 Tage, an denen Sainte-Maxime sich mit Mimosen schmückt und die Saison der Korsos und des Karnevals an der Côte d’Azur einleitet. Mit Mimosen und frischen Blumen geschmückte Wägen, Musikkapellen, Straßenmusik-Gruppen aller Art in Verbindung mit Konfettischlachtenund Mimosenzweigen garantieren eine fröhliche Atmosphäre quer durch die Stadtmitte von Sainte-Maxime. Sainte-Maxime auf dem Eis – Eishalle Da die Winterferien nicht immer gleichbedeutend mit verschneiten Wegen sind...lädt Sainte-Maxime die Familien in seine 450m2 große Eishalle ein, wo gesellige Momente und das Gefühl des Dahingleitens genossen werden können. APRIL Sainte-Maxime Jet Cup Seit 7 Jahren empfängt Sainte-Maxime den ersten Durchgang der französischen Meisterschaft im High-speed Jetski und der Meisterschaft « Grand Sud ». Mehr als 140 Rennfahrer, die alle Titel auf dem weltweit höchsten Niveau besitzen und aus ganz Frankreich kommen, treffen in der Bucht von Sainte-Maxime zu einem außergewöhnlichen Spektakel aufeinander. MAI Harley Davidson – Treffen Die Gemeinden des Golfes von Saint-Tropez empfangen mehr als 10 000 Biker, die anläßlich des europäischen Festivals der Marke Harley Davidson aus ganz Europa kommen. Rocker-Atmosphäre und eine wahre Flut an Chrom sorgen für eine ganz besondere Stimmung. Patronatsfest Am 14. und 15. Mai knüpft Sainte-Maxime an die provenzalischen Traditionen an und begeht den Jahrestag des Todes seiner Heiligen. Während zwei Tagen wird die heilige Patronin in Messen und Pro Fest’Italia Italien wird gefeiert! In dem Ausstellerdorf werden die Farben und die Küche Italiens geehrt: Italienische Kunsthandwerker und Händler bieten direkt aus Italien kommende Produkte an, dazu gibt es typische Musik und Animationen. Eine Woche ‘Famille Plus’ DEine Woche lang werden Kindern und Familien von ca. vierzig Fachleuten mit dem Qualitätslabel « Famille Plus » verwöhnt… Eine Vielzahl von Geschenken und Preisnachlässen sind die Merkmale dieses wichtigen Ereignisses.

Viele Tage mit Freizeitaktivitäten für Kinder Die Strandpromenade verwandelt sich ein ganzes Wochenende lang in einen grossen Freizeitpark für 3 bis 12 Jahre alte Kinder. Eine Vielzahl von Freizeitaktivtäten werden ihnen hier angeboten: Workshops, Veranstaltungen, Strassenkünstler, Hüpfburgen, Spiele und andere lustige Aktivitäten… Viel Spass für die ganze Familie! GIUGNO Musikfest Die kürzeste Nacht des Jahres wird in Sainte-Maxime auch schon tagsüber mit viel Musik gefeiert. JULI & AUGUST Die Gala-Abende des Théâtre de la Mer Für die Sommerabende im Juli und August zieht Sainte-Maxime sämtliche Register. Laurent Gerra, Alain Souchon, Patrick Bruel, Garou, M. Pokora, Tal – all dies sind Künstler, die bereits auf dem berühmten Schauplatz von Saint-Maxime aufgetreten sind. Nicht zu vergessen.... Die traditionellen Theaterabende im Théatre de la Mer Diese festlichen und kostenlosen Termine ziehen jedes Jahr ein noch zahlreicheres Publikum rund um eine vielfältige Programmgestaltung an. Konzerte, Shows und junge Talente bilden einen wahren Cocktail der Unterhaltung für Klein und Groß. « Live »-Musikgruppen in der Stadt Entstanden aus dem Wunsch, die Stadtmitte noch dynamischer zu machen und für alle Publikumsgruppen offen zu sein, verwandeln die « Live »Musikgruppen die Plätze der Stadtmitte in echte Orte des Austauschs und der Geselligkeit rund um das Konzept : 3 Plätze, 3 Musikgruppen. Die Summer DJ’S Party Das Théâtre de la Mer verwandelt sich in eine gigantische Disco mit allen aktuell erfolg-reichen und besten Stücken und mit Nebel- und Lichteffekten – das Ganze findet ein Mal pro Woche statt ! Die Donnerstage in der « Nartelle » Diese Treffen in der Kapelle La Nartelle sind ein Muss und versprechen auserlesene Abende klassischer Musik.

NOVEMBER Rallye du Var The foremost event of November, the Rallye du Var has become a true institution in SainteMaxime. Traditional epilogue of the French championship of rallyes for over 60 years, this event reunites all those passionate about motor sports

DECEMBER End of the year festivities in Sainte-Maxime During 3 weeks, Sainte-Maxime dons its lights to celebrate Christmas and the new year. Magical scenery under the marquee of the «Théâtre de la Mer», activities and shows for families, the Santa Clause amusement park and its rides allow you to enjoy magical moments with your family.

Summer DJ parties The Théâtre de la Mer transforms into a giant club with all the successes and current hits, smoke machines, light effects and all, once a week! Nartelle Thursdays These events have become essential at the Chapelle de la Nartelle and offer eclectic evenings of classical music.

OKTOBER Das Sainte-Maxime Free Flight World Masters Sainte-Maxime behauptet seinen Platz in der Welt der Luftfahrt! Die Virtuosen des Kunstfliegens geben sich im Oktober ein Stelldichein zu einer Show, bei der einem der Atem stockt. Nicht zu vergessen ist das außergewöhnliche Auftreten der Kunstflugstaffel der Luftwaffe, der Kampfflugzeuge, die Patrouille “Cartouche Doré” und die renommierte Kunstflugstaffel der französischen Luftwaffe, die “Patrouille de France”. NOVEMBER Die Rallye du Var Ein unverzichtbares Event im Monat November : die Rallye du Var ist zu einer echten Institution in Sainte-Maxime geworden. Als traditionelle Schlußveranstaltung der französi-schen Rallye Meisterschaft seit mehr als 60 Jahren vereint dieses Treffen alle Motorsport-Begeisterten. DEZEMBER Die Feiern zum Jahresende in Sainte-Maxime 3 Wochen lang schmückt sich Saint-Maxime mit seinem Lichterkleid, um Weihnachten und das Neue Jahr zu feiern. Es gibt zauberhafte Inszenierungen unter der Kuppel des Théâtre de la Mer, Aktivitäten und Shows für Familien, den Spielplatz des Weihnachtsmanns und seine Manegen, um in der Familie magische Momente zu erleben.

Das Walschutzgebiet Ein gemeinsamer Raum zum Schutz und zur Aufmerksamkeit der Meeressäuger im Mittelmeer. DIE ZIELE Das auf einem Gebiet von 87.500 m² große Walschutzgebiet hat den Ehrgeiz, die Meeressäuger und ihr Habitat gegen jede Art von Störungen zu schützen. Die entsprechenden Maßnahmen wurden vo n Frankreich, Italien und dem Fürstentum Monaco eingeleitet. DIE VERPFLICHTUNGEN DER STADT SAINTE-MAXIME Sainte-Maxime schenkt der Frage nach der Umwelt und dem Fortbestand der Meeressäuger im Mittelmeer besondere Bedeutung. Am 31. Mai 2011 hat die Stadt die Charta zur Partnerschaft des Walschutzgebietes unterschrieben. Sie hat sich verpflichtet, in ihren Verwaltungs- und Planungsentscheidungen, die zu suchen, die diese Tiere am wenigsten beeinflussen. Die Stadt Sainte-Maxime fördert pädagogische Handlungsweisen und Informationen über ihr Gebiet und verbreitet auch über und beim Walschutzgebiet Informationen. Im Übrigen trägt sie dazu bei, die Aktivitäten, die auf die Meeressäuger Einfluss haben, maximal zu reduzieren und die Information über eine eventuelle Strandung von Walen oder anderen Meerestieren zu veröffentlichen, die auf ihrem Gebiet stattfinden könnten.

OBJECTIVES Extending over a territory of 87 500 sq m, the aim of the Pelagos Sanctuary is to protect marine mammals and their habitats from all sources of disturbance. Management measures have been adopted by France, Italy and Monaco.

COMMITMENT MADE BY THE CITY OF SAINTE-MAXIME

Sainte-Maxime carries a special interest in the issue of environmental protection and the continued survival of marine mammals in the Mediterranean ocean. The City has been a signatory to the Pelagos partnership agreement since 31 May 2011.

where traditional meets modern

In the 18th century, Sainte-Maxime was a small port where goods from the Maures forest could be loaded onto boats.

Wine, oil, cork, wood, grains and vegetables were loaded onto vessels called tartanes, boats capable of transporting cargoes from one port to another at minimal cost. By the end of the 1930s, the commercial port was being replaced by the marina. The port of SainteMaxime was extended in 1972 and is now able to take boats between 5 and 25 metres in length, and has a total of 800 mooring rings. The port of Sainte-Maxime is always buzzing with activity, it is also the province of everyone who loves sailing. The harbourmaster’s offices, built in the shape of a ship, at The Quai Léon Condroyer, fully refurbished in 2013, provides full services that will meet all the requirements of those who enjoy sailing.

Outstanding diving sites The Gulf of St Tropez is full of underwater diving sites that are absolutely outstanding.

Its jagged coastline, its cliffs that drop steeply to the sea, its rocky inlets that provide protection and the currents have created ideal conditions for the underwater flora and fauna to develop. The Gulf of St Tropez is crammed with little gems. In fact no fewer than 60 diving sites have been identified. LES SARDINAUX at the entrance to the Gulf of St Tropez, with its steep drops and its growths of coral is a haven for groupers, conger eels and moray eels. La Sèche à l’Huile shelters slipper lobsters and spiny lobsters on a floor of red coral. The mediterranean sea LUNGS DIE NEPTUNGRASWIESEN SIND DIE GRÜNE LUNGE DES MITTELMEERS Wenn das Mittelmeer in geringer Tiefe eine dunklere, eher geheimnisvolle Farbe aufweist, dann handelt es sich in Wirklichkeit um ein Seegras, das eine ganz wichtige Rolle im Ökosystem von diesem Meer spielt. Ein wenig Biologie Das Neptungras ist eine der seltenen blühenden Pflanzen, die auch im Meer gedeihen. Dieses Gras hat bandförmige, je nach Jahreszeit 2o bis 11o Zentimeter lange Blätter, die ca. 1 Zentimeter breit sind. Diese Blätter wachsen im Bündel an liegenden oder stehenden Stielen. Das Neptungras ist eine endemische Pflanze des Mittelmeers, die diesem Meeresboden seine einzigartige Natur verleiht. Es gedeiht von nur wenigen Metern unter der Meeresoberfläche bis zu einer Tiefe von 2o bis 4o Metern. Die Ausdehnung von dem Neptungras erfolgt meistens durch Stecklinge. Die Blüte ist aussergewöhnlich und danach bilden sich die Oliven des Meeres. Die Rolle von dem Neptungras im Mittelmeer Das Neptungras bildet grosse Wiesen und bieten den Fischen damit verschiedene Unterschlupfsmöglichkeiten, Laichgründe, Nahrung… Die Bewohner sind sehr diskret, sie tarnen sich oder graben sich ein. Die Neptungraswiesen arbeiten wie eine regelrechte Lunge: verglichen mit Wald, produzieren sie doppelt soviel Sauerstoff pro m².

A secret destination passed on from generation to generation. «In the 50s, my parents Elise and Henri, who had a little hair salon in Corrèze,» relates Paul, 68, retired military doctor. «To relax after a year of gruelling work, they took off with my uncle and my aunt to Sainte-Maxime, somewhat at random. The family met up in a campground next to the sea where they took advantage of the little moments of happiness and carelessness but, more importantly, fell in love with SainteMaxime. They got into the habit of coming back each year as their family grew with the arrival of two children, Paul and Philippe.

«In 1965, my parents decided to have a vacation home built. We spent all of our summer vacations there. I remember the beautiful sunny days spent swimming, building sandcastles at the downtown beach, eating ice cream from Géo’s and melons bought from the market and watching my parents play pétanque in the late afternoon.»

A MIND FULL OF MEMORIES «Since, time has gone by,» continues Paul, «but our vacations at Sainte-Maxime remain fundamental.» Paul, now living in Sainte-Maxime, enjoys hosting his loved ones from throughout France and other parts of the world. Grandparents, parents and grandchildren meet here with the same emotion. «I come once a year with my husband and our 8-year-old son,» explains Valérie, marketing manager. «We live in Shanghai and our daily life is hectic. These vacations provide true healing for all of us. I see my family only once a year and for us, Sainte-Maxime is the meeting place,» continues Valérie. «I have spent my most beautiful moments here and I have so many memories here with my cousins,» explains Valérie. She attaches a feeling of family to this place and hope to pass it on to her son.

MAGICAL FAMILY MOMENTS During the summer, the days begin with breakfast in the shade of umbrella pines, and then we head for the beach. «I love swimming with my brother and my cousin , we really have a lot of fun,» Alexandre whispers gently. «Sometimes, we go to the Sailing Club to go sailing. But what I like most of all are the picnics with the whole family at the Pointe des Sardinaux!» For the mild summer nights, everyone comes together to enjoy a barbecue and the local specialities from the market. In a joyous ambiance, every generation shares their day between hearty laughter and unusual anecdotes, which is what makes Paul the happiest.

Wir verbrachten dort alle Sommerferien. Ich erinnere mich an herrliche Sonnentage, die wir mit Baden und Sandburgenbauen am Strand des Stadtzentrums verbrachten, an das Eis vo n Géo, auf dem Markt gekaufte Melonen und an die Boulespiel-Partien meiner Eltern am späten Nachmittag ».

Seitdem ist einige Zeit vergangen, fährt Paul fort, aber unsere Ferien in Sainte-Maxime sind unverzichtbar geworden“. Paul, der heute in Sainte-Maxime lebt, hat große Freude daran, seine Verwandtschaft aus ganz Frankreich und sogar aus anderen Teilen der Welt zu empfangen. Großeltern, Eltern und Enkelkinder kommen hier mit der gleichen Begeisterung zusammen. « Ich komme einmal im Jahr mit meinem Mann und meinem 8jährigen Sohn, erklärt Valérie, Marketingverantwortliche. Around 1880, the mimosa, native to Australia, appeared on the hillsides of the Croix des Gardes in Cannes, most likely introduced by one of the foremost winter guests, such as the Duke of Vallombrosa, the Marquis of Morès or Lord Brougham. The Horticulture and Acclimatization Society thus greatly contributes to its promotion. Mimosa farmers will, therefore, multiply in the region, in Mandelieu, Pégomas, Tanneron or La Roquette. From the Cannes and Mandelieu train stations, the mimosa is sent to all of the big cities in France and in Europe.

THE MIMOSA IN PERFUMERY The most prestigious brands of French perfume have utilized the mimosa in their most famous fragrances. The most utilized type of mimosa is the cassier (acacia farnesiena), though the market development is turning more towards the wild mimosa.

Sottintende anche la sicurezza, una sensibilità esasperata. E dice anche: sei il mio unico amore. È inoltre il fiore di chi si ritrova. Simbolo dell’oro e del sole, la mimosa è altresì l’immagine della vita che trionfa, vista la durezza del suo legno, e della vittoria sulle forze del male.

UN PO’ DI BOTANICA…

La mimosa appartiene al genere acacia e all’ordine delle mimosacee. Le varie specie sono utilizzate con scopi diversi : fiori recisi, pianta ornamentale, giardino roccioso, siepe difensiva o tagliavento, contenimento della sabbia e dei terreni. Viene coltivata essenzialmente nel sud dell’Australia, in Africa del Sud e in Francia. 800 specie sono recensite e ne esistono 1200 specie.

The mimosa belongs to the acacia genus and order of the mimosa.

• Gaulois (Acacia Dealbata) Large, very strong tree with dark green foliage. Bipinnate divided leaves. Abundant flowering (sulphur yellow) that mainly emerges from the foliage from the end of January through March.

The different species are utilized for various purposes: cut flowers, ornamental or rock plants, as a protective hedge or wind barrier, sand and soil retainer. It is mainly cultivated in Southern Australia, South Africa and in France. 800 species have been recorded and 1200 most likely exist.

• Astier (dealbata Gaulois Astier) This mimosa is the least sensitive to the cold, the «Gaulois Astier» can, in fact, resist up to -8/-10°C without damage. If it is taken care of in regions with somewhat colder winters, it has a high chance of adapting.

THE SECRET HEADLAND OF

« POINTE DES SARDINAUX » The Pointe des Sardinaux, a quiet, peaceful spot, is a natural peninsula nicknamed «La Petite Corse» or «Little Corsica». Visitors will discover a series of little concealed creeks that are ideal for underwater diving, and where families can spot plants, shellfish and crustaceans on the rocks.

THE ENTERTAINING

The Plage des Eléphants, not far from SainteMaxime town centre, was made famous by the comic strip «Voyage de Babar» (The Travels of Barbar) by Jean De Brunhoff, published in 1932.

In the heart of Sainte-Maxime is the south-facing town-centre beach, which offers superb views of the gulf of Saint-Tropez. For bathing, shopping and lively entertainment - you’ll find it all here!

The story behind it... The man who created Barbar was staying in this particular part of Sainte-Maxime, and as he gazed at the magnificent landscape before him it gave him the inspiration for illustrating the amazing hot-air balloon trip taken by Barbar and his wife Céleste on their honeymoon. The De Brunhoff family home is still there today, still looking at the sea.

Stephanie’s recipe Red mullet salad (for 2 people)

6 fillets of Mediterranean red mullet, 150g mesclun salad, olive cream, slices of toasted bread, olive oil, salt, fleur de sel (sea salt) and pepper. Drizzle in a saucepan with olive oil and set the mullet fillets skin-side down. Season with salt and pepper. Cook at high heat for 1 minute, then reduce the heat and cook for 2 more minutes. Spread olive cream on the slices of toast. Arrange the mesclun salad on a plate with the olive cream toast, and place the red mullet fillets on top. Season with a drizzle of olive oil and fleur de sel (sea salt).

Shrubs that grow on our hillsides • The strawberry Tree is low-growing, between 1 and 5 metres in height, and is an evergreen with long, oval, serrated leaves, dark green on their outside and light green on the inside. Its fruit are round, with a ridged surface, and are edible. The fruit covers its branches, and as it ripens it changes from green to orangey and then to red. • The Myrtle Reaching a height of between 1 and 3 metres, is a very common bush in the Maures Massif. So bedecken die Pinie, der seit Beginn der Frühantike angebaute Olivenbaum, die Steineiche und die Korkeiche, Zistrose und Erdbeerbaum das Maurenmassiv. Bei einem Spaziergang oder Ausritt entlang der Pfade und auf den Hügeln von Catalugno oder Le Quilladou, bei einer Besichtigung des Botanischen Gartens Les Myrtes oder einem Ausflug in die Natur eröffnet sich den Besuchern eine Palette an Farben und Gerüchen. KLEINER ÜBERBLICK … Die Sträucher auf unseren Hügeln Der Erdbeerbaum ist ein kleiner, immergrüner Baum von 1 bis 5 m Höhe, dessen ovale, längliche und gezackte Blätter auf der Oberseite dunkelgrün und auf der Unterseite hellgrün sind. Die runden Früchte mit rauer Oberfläche sind essbar. Das Astwerk überzieht sich mit diesen Früchten, die mit zunehmender Reife erst grün, dann orange und schließlich rot werden. Die 1 bis 3 m hohe Myrte ist ein sehr weit verbreiteter Strauch im Maurenmassiv. Deren Früchte sind kleine, essbare, schwarze Beeren, mit einem sehr harzigen Geschmack. Die Zistrose ist ein im Mittelmeergebiet verbreiteter Strauch. Man erkennt sie an ihren schmalen Blättern, die an den Rändern eingerollt und klebrig sind. Ihre weiße oder rosafarbene Blüte ist spektakulär. Und die Bäume Die Pinie sticht in der Landschaft durch ihre Silhouette hervor. Sie wird auch Schirmkiefer genannt und ähnelt einem riesigen, geöffneten Sonnenschirm. Herrliche Kiefernwälder schmücken die Landschaft von Sainte-Maxime. Die Steineiche, typischer Baum der Garrigue (Vegetationsform des Mittelmeergebietes), verfügt über immergrüne Blätter mit dornigen Rändern. Nicht vergessen darf man auch die Korkeiche mit ihrer dicken, rissigen Borke. Sie wird noch heute für die Herstellung von Korken genutzt.

Vineyards map in the the Var region When you drink wine made in Provence, you’re tasting a drop of history. This history started 2,600 years ago, when the Phoenicians founded Marseille and introduced a fabulous plant to France for the first time: the vine.

Ever since, the art of vine cultivation and the winemaking tradition have kept moving ahead. Set between the Mediterranean ocean and the Alps, Provence’s vineyards stretch for almost 200 kilometres from east to west, mainly in the departments of Var and Bouches-du-Rhône and to a lesser extent in the Alpes-Maritimes.

CÔTES DE PROVENCE WINES GEOLOGY AND TERROIR There is not one single type of Côte de Provence wine; there are many types, each with its own geological and climatic personality. Five major natural areas making up the appellation are at present divided into three «terroir» denominations.

GRAPE VARIETIES AND WINEMAKING Côtes de Provence wines are produced using the «assemblage» method, a very ancient and traditional winemaking technique that consists of vinifying the wine from each grape variety separately, and then blending the resulting wines. This method makes it possible to obtain wellbalanced wines that display the qualities of each of the grape varieties: > Red and rosé grapes: Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Tibouren, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon. > White grapes: lRolle, Ugni Blanc, Clairette, Sémillon.

The terroir of the Côtes de Provence appellation has a complex geology in which two major geological terrains co-exist: one calcareous, to the north and west, and the other crystalline, to the south and the east. The prevailing climate is Mediterranean but there are significant variations due to altitude and the influence of the sea.

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE ESTATE

A hundred years ago, this former family farm was almost entirely self-sufficient, living on fishing and hunting and on the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, cereals, olive oil and – of course – wine. As the years went by, agriculture gave way to viticulture. The family keeps the traditions of wine-making alive to this day, producing A.O.P-classified wines (protected designation of origin) on the 3 Caps heritage site. EIN WEIHNACHTSABEND IN DER PROVENCE « Bòn Nové », so sagt man hier in der Provence « Frohe Weihnachten »! Die Weihnachtszeit in der Provence reicht vom sogenannten Barbara-Tag bis zu Lichtmess. In den Städten und Dörfern werden während dieser Zeit eine Vielzahl von Traditionen, Festen, Riten und Bräuchen geehrt. « CACHO-FIO » Der « cacho-fio » bedeutet das rituelle Anzünden des Weihnachtsscheits, meist aus Obstbaumholz (Birn-, Kirsch- oder Olivenbaum). « Cacha le feu » heisst anzünden: man sagt sogar « Bouta cacho-fio », d.h. den Scheit in Brand setzen. Bevor man sich zu Tisch setzt, werden das älteste und das jüngste Mitglied der Familie den Holzscheit vor den Kamin tragen und dreimal nacheinander Dessertwein über diesen Scheit giessen, bevor sie ihn in den Kamin legen und anzünden. Dabei singen sie « Alègre ! Diou nous alègre Cacho fio ven, tout ben ven ; Diou nous fagué la graci de veïre l’an que ven, Si sian pas mai que siguen pas men ». Übersetzt bedeutet dieses Lied: « Freuen wir uns! Gott macht uns die Freude, den « cacho fio » zu feiern, alles steht zum Besten. Gott schenkt uns die Gnade, das kommende Jahr zu begrüssen. Wenn wir in diesem Jahr nicht zahlreicher sein werden, so mögen wir auch nicht weniger sein. » DAS GROSSE ABENDESSEN Das grosse Abendessen, das es gleich nach dem « cacho-fio » gibt, ist ein fleischloses Essen bei dem allerdings der Tisch nach alter Tradition gedeckt wird. Der Esstisch ist das wichtigste Möbel des Raumes. Er wird mit Dornmyrte mit roten Beeren und mit dem Weizen vom Barbara-Tag geschmückt.

THE « CACHO-FIO »

Die dreizehn Nachtische, die noch heute am Weihnachtsabend gegessen werden, haben die gleiche Bedeutung. Man kann diese von Anfang an zusammen mit dem Wein auf dem Tisch anrichten, ein Symbol der Fülle, denn die Tafel ist damit reichhaltig bestückt. Weihnachten ist das Fest der Barmherzigkeit, deswegen ist auch ein Gedeck für einen unbekannten Gast gedacht, es handelt sich um das “Gedeck des Armen”.

THE GREAT SUPPER The big supper, just after the «cacho-fio», is a mere meal that requires a real staging. The table is the main element of the room. is decorated with small holly with red balls and wheat –to-germ for the Sainte-Barbe. The three «white tablecloths» that cover the table and the three candles that are placed evoke the Holy Trinity. The thirteen loaves that is served along with the meal recall the Last Supper with the twelve apostles and Jesus. The same is true of the thirteen desserts that have been preserved til today on the Christmas table. They can be arranged from the beginning with the wine in sign of abundance so that the table is filled. Christmas being the feast of Charity, a cover is reserved for an unknown, it is the «plate of the poor». The Christmas Eve demanding fasting and abstinence from meat, the meal is meager but hearty. We do not find a «typical menu» but characteristics according to the regions. In general, the Christmas meal is adapted to local resources and local possibilities, for examp e between maritime Provence and rural Provence. In the towns and villages of the Coast there is of course fresh fish, while in the interior Provence, vegetables occupy a prominent place on the menu.

Mai gefeiert wird, die Ehre zu erweisen DAS PATRONATSFEST, eine nach strengen Regeln organisierte Prozession Das Patronatsfest erstreckt sich über zwei Tage. Am Abend des 14. Der Major gibt außerdem die Befehle zum Schießen, dabei wird er durch zwei Gefreite unterstützt. Die Machtübergabe zwischen dem alten und dem neuen Major erfolgt auf sehr feierliche Weise auf dem Vorplatz der Kirche. Die Heilige wird durch ein Kind der Folkloregruppe Lei Magnoti und ein Kind der Bravadeure mit einer Krone und einer Schärpe in den Farben der Stadt geehrt. Am 15. Mai beginnt die Prozession. Die Büste der Heiligen, die von vier Männern getragen wird, ist umgeben von religiösen und zivilen Würdenträgern, Bravadeuren, Querpfeifen und Trommeln. Die Prozession ist nach strengen Regeln organisiert. Auch die Aufstellung der Personen, die den Festzug bilden, bleibt stets unveränderlich. le petit train des pignes On board the Petit Train des Pignes, Raphaël gives you a glimpse of the history and unique heritage of Sainte-Maxime, anecdotally telling the tale of its architecture, from Provencal and «Art-Deco» style to the modern day. The trip is almost 45 minutes long and takes you on a discovery tour of the harbour, the Tour Carrée, emblem of the city, the old town and its archetypal shopping lanes, and the covered market with a charm all of its own: not forgetting the town hall, which was formerly a silk-worm nursery; the thousand-year-old mill; the Château des Tourelles, which was the last residence of Léon Gaumont (French inventor and cinema pioneer); or the 136-metre high Sémaphore hill that offers panoramic views over the Saint-Tropez golf course, the sea and, further away, the mountains of the Southern Alps. The Petit Train des Pignes has been a real institution in Sainte-Maxime for the last 30 years and has successfully held on to its authenticity. The scripted commentary from the driver-mechanic is given in French and there are informative, eye-catching leaflets available to help non-French-speaking visitors to follow the tour.

An Bord des Touristenzugs „Petit Train des Pignes“ offenbart Raphaël Einblicke in die Geschichte und das außergewöhnliche Kulturerbe von Sainte-Maxime, vorbei an moderner Architektur, provenzalischem Stil und „Art Déco“, gespickt mit zahlreichen Anekdoten. Die fast einstündige Rundfahrt führt zum Hafen, zum viereckigen Turm, dem Wahrzeichen der Stadt, zum alten Dorfzentrum mit seinen typischen Ladengässchen, seiner Markthalle und seinem ganz besonderen Ambiente. Nicht zu vergessen sind das Rathaus, das früher ein Seidenraupenhaus war, die tausendjährige Mühle, das Türmchenschloss, die letzte Residenz von Léon Gaumont, und der Hügel des Semaphore, der mit seinen 136 Metern Höhe einen herrlichen Panoramablick über den Golf von Saint-Tropez, das Meer und die in der Ferne gelegenen Südalpen bietet. Der Touristenzug „Petit Train des Pignes“ ist seit mehr als 30 Jahren zu einer wahren Institution in Sainte-Maxime geworden und hat den authentischen Charakter der Rundfahrten erhalten. Die in Szene gesetzten Kommentare des Fahrers und Mechanikers sind auf Französisch und den ausländischen Besuchern wird interaktives Besichtigungsmaterial zur Verfügung gestellt. « …Seit 1987 ist eine wahrhafte Institution… » Kommentare sehr gut konzipiert werden während des Besuchs (Französisch, Englisch, Deutsch und Niederländisch) auf Audio- und Papierdokumente zur Verfügung gestellt.

« BUGADO »… What is it?

BUGADE… WAS BEDEUTET DIESES WORT? Vor langer, langer Zeit, als es weder Mangel, noch chemische Reinigungsmittel und andere ausgeklügelte Maschinen gab… Zu dieser Zeit nähten sich die jungen Mädchen ihre Aussteuer, sobald sie alt genug waren, um eine Nadel zu halten. Diese Aussteuer brachten sie an ihrem Hochzeitstag mit. Sie bestand aus Hauswäsche, aus feinem Leinen oder aus Hanf und diese begleitete sie durchs ganze Leben. Die Reinigung dieser Hauswäsche fand zwei bis vier Mal im Jahr statt, immer in der schönen Jahreszeit und es handelt sich um eine zeremonielle Wäsche, die « bugade ».

It was in the days when spinners, chemical detergents and other sophisticated machines did not exist ... At the time, young women, as soon as they were old enough to draw a needle,they would put together a wedding trousseau. Brought on their wedding day, this household linen,made out of linen or hemp cloth, had to follow them throughout their lives. The cleaning was the subject of a rituel laundry, called «bugado». It took place two to four times per year and always in good weather.

« BUGADO », A WOMEN’S MATTER… Enclosed in a canvas bag, the wooden ashes served as detergent and were placed at the bottom of the washing machine. Over it, an old sheet covered the ashes and the linen. Water was then boiled in a large cast iron

cauldron which was poured progressively. A pipe connecting the jale (large wooden tank) to the cauldron allowed the laundry water to withdraw. The latter was hence reused several times. The next day, the women provided with their cube of soap from Marseille, went to the creek or the wash-house to soap and rinse the linen. It was then wringed and stretched over the threads or simply laid onto the meadows’ grass.

Holzasche wurde in einen Stoffsack eingenäht und diente als Reinigungsmittel. Diesen Sack legte man unten in den Waschkessel, darüber kam die Schmutzwäsche und ein altes Leintuch deckte alles ab. Wasser wurde in einem gusseisernen Kochkessel zum Kochen gebracht und dieses wurde dann nach und nach in den Waschkessel gegossen. Ein Rohr stellte die Verbindung zwischen den Waschkessel und einem grossen Holzfass (‘jale’) her, das Waschwasser wurde also aufgefangen und mehrmals wiederverwendet. Am kommenden Tag gingen die Frauen mit ihrem Würfel an Kernseife (Savon de Marseille) zum Bach hinunter oder zum Waschhaus und seiften ihre Wäsche ein, bevor sie sie gründlich reinigten. Dann wurde diese geschleudert und aufgehängt oder einfach auf den Wiesen zum Trocknen ausgelegt… TIPPS BZGL.
