Dear Parishioners,
“Jesus stood in their midst and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’” (Luke 24:36)
Throughout the appearances of Jesus after His resurrection, we hear these words offered in His disciples: “PEACE BE
WITH YOU.”
In these words, the heart of Jesus is revealed. He knows His disciples are fearful, confused, and in a state of wonder. With these words, Jesus wants to establish a sense of living that His disciples are called to follow. Jesus knows that the events which occurred in the last few days would be times of uncertainty and upheaval. Those moments could have been a difficult trial for them. Jesus understands that peace is necessary for the path they will be called to. This path, as we know, would eventually lead to the martyrdom of many of the disciples. Without “peace,” they could easily fall away from the task ahead of them.
The fruits of His peace can certainly be seen in the Acts of the Apostles. The peace that Jesus offered them in the power of the Holy Spirit caused those once fearful followers to now go out boldly and proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord. In today’s first reading, we see St. Peter now preaching to the leaders he once fled from and explaining to them what they had done to Jesus. What is interesting is that St. Peter has now truly embraced the message of Jesus and preaches with love to those who had Jesus crucified. “Neither you nor your leaders had any idea what you were really doing.” He speaks, not in condemnation, but in love as he calls them to conversion.
Who would not want peace in their lives, especially when our lives can be filled with turmoil and upheaval? We need more than ever to hear those words of Jesus, “Peace be with you.” But how do we find that peace? The Scriptures remind us that it is in the power of the Holy Spirit that all things are possible, especially the peace of Jesus. We see how “different” the apostles were when they opened their minds to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit that was given to us at Baptism not only opens our minds to the wisdom of God, but also offers us His peace. Why? Well, because the peace that Jesus offers us in His teachings is based on an attitude of love and forgiveness. Our sins no longer have to bind us or hold us back. When we bond to our sins, it affects the way we not only look at ourselves, but our view of the world. St. Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio) says “joy with peace is the sister of charity.” An inability to forgive hardens our hearts and tends to bring with it judgment of others. It keeps us from acting in charity toward others. That lack of charity can put us in a place of condemnation to those who we find distasteful to us. We judge because it can be difficult to see in others what we don’t want to recognize in ourselves.
Look again at Acts. St. Peter, who as we know denied knowing Jesus, is forgiven, and in the compassion of the Jesus who forgave him, is able to respond in the same mercy to others who err. Jesus doesn’t condemn those who had Him crucified, but rather speaks in love and a hope for conversion and repentance. If our Savior Jesus does not hold back forgiveness from the very people who caused His suffering and death, should we not attempt to do the same? St. Peter accepted the Peace of Jesus and he can now share that peace with others, knowing it brings a deep, abiding happiness and joy.
This is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit we can receive in abundance when we have accepted Jesus, in His fullness, as our Lord and Savior. So seek out Jesus; embrace His message as life giving, and in so doing come to that peace He offers to those who truly follow Him. And, of course, repent and be forgiven and freed! The seeking of peace in our own lives can and should be a journey we seek each and every day. It certainly takes the work of our heart and mind, but the rewards are great.
I would like to thank Ann Welsh and Cathy Morrissey for organizing the celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday. A special thanks is extended to Fr. Eddy for leading the celebration.
In Jesus, the Risen Lord, Fr. Bob

DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE
OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

The Annunciation of the Lord
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
We know that the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy can seem insurmountable. This is especially true when it feels like there is no support for a pregnant woman struggling to appreciate the precious gift of life she carries and may compel her towards a regrettable decision. But genuine empowerment of women comes only through recognizing the dignity of the human person at every stage of life and this is most poignantly illuminated through the blessings of motherhood.
In this, it is with great joy that I announce the FIAT Pregnancy Support Program at Catholic Health. This program, in partnership with the Diocese of Rockville Centre, comprises a dedicated help line designed to assist women access the counsel, resources, and encouragement needed to choose life when facing a pregnancy with unexpected or difficult circumstances. The Pregnancy Support Team is available 24x7, 365 days of the year to assist callers in accessing the services needed to help them see that every new life is a blessing, even when there are challenges.
Any expectant woman in need of help can call the FIAT Pregnancy Support Program and be confident that, regardless of age, religion, immigration status or ability to pay , she will receive compassionate, nonjudgmental, and life-affirming care. Most of all, she can be assured that she will not be alone through her pregnancy, and she will not be abandoned after she delivers her child. If she is overwhelmed by an unexpected pregnancy, contemplating abortion pills on her college campus, distressed with an adverse prenatal diagnosis, experiencing a miscarriage, worried about feeding her child, regretting a past abortion or other pregnancy-related distress, FIAT is there to help her sort things out and get the care she needs. It only takes the courage of a phone call to find real hope: 631-476-LOVE (5683).
It is my prayer that the FIAT Pregnancy Support Program be recognized across the Diocese of Rockville Centre as the first step a woman takes when facing challenging circumstances during pregnancy. There are promotional materials available at every parish and on-line, but we ask for your help to make this resource known widely through your prayers, your witness, and your word-of-mouth, for every one of us has an important and serious responsibility to spread the Gospel of Life. Let FIAT lead the way.
Sincerely in Christ,
Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
An Easter Prayer
Good and gracious God, Our most glorious Creator,
As we greet the signs in nature around us:
Of Spring once again regaling us in bloom,
In the songs of returning birds and fields soon to be planted, We give you praise for an even greater sign of new life: the resurrection of your Son,
Our Lord Jesus Christ, that we especially celebrate at this time.
The sadness and despair of his death has given way to the bright promise of immortality.
For the Resurrection is our guarantee that justice will triumph over treason,
Light will overcome darkness, and love will conquer death.
As we celebrate, we also dare to ask for your grace that we may live the promise given to us,
By imitating the life of Jesus in reaching out to the poor, the marginalized, the least among us,
As we strive to be neighbor to all those we meet,
We ask your special blessings each and every day on our President.
Working with him may we strive to make this great country of ours a beacon of hope and justice in a world hungry for peace and so in need of your love.
We praise you in this Easter season. Change our lives, change our hearts to be messengers of Easter joy and hope.
We make our prayer through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord forever. Amen.

Cheerful Catholic Academic
Blood Drive Raised Awareness of Critical Supply Shortage
Earlier this academic year, the fourth-grade class at Saint Mary’s Elementary School studied body systems, specifically the circulatory system, as part of their science lessons. They learned about each part of the system and their functions in providing blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the body, as well as other vital work to provide energy, growth, and repair to our bodies. These studies helped the children understand the need for their Blood Drive held in March. In further preparation for the event, the students welcomed a presentation on blood donations from Michele McCaffrey of the New York Blood Center. The children learned who needs blood, the different blood types, why people don’t donate, and how to persuade people to attend the Blood Drive, especially during this current blood emergency.
THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY
Focusing on the critical need for blood donations in the local region, the students made posters about their efforts to inform the community of the Drive and wrote thank-you notes for the donors. At the Blood Drive, the children, who also served as “Little Doctors” that day, greeted donors and gave out snacks, drinks, stickers, and their thoughtful handwritten thank you notes. Fourth-grade science teacher Mrs. Jennifer Schnatz, who helped organize the Blood Drive, said, “It was a memorable experience for the students and donors, especially during the Lenten season. They truly gave alms to others.”
In addition to the Blood Drive, the entire school community dressed in red to honor the memory of beloved faculty member Mrs. Anne Salzman, who launched the Blood Drive several years ago at St. Mary’s. Monetary donations were accepted to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in her memory. All proceeds were designated to the Clever Cricket Cure Team, comprised of alums carrying Mrs. Salzman’s spirit and legacy forward. There were 34 blood donations, which will save 102 lives! Great job, St. Mary’s!

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.
We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.

All Children Are Invited to Participate in Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Third Sunday of EASTER
1 John 2:1-3 “My children, I am writing this to you so you may not commit sin. But, if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous one. He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world. That we may be sure that we know him is to keep his commandments.” As we get to know Jesus more and obey his commandments, he will open our minds to understand the scriptures. Jesus will also open your heart to love and forgive one another. Take a leap of faith, and trust God to nourish your relationship.
