From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“I am the Good Shepherd. I know my sheep and they know me.” (John 10:14)

In the Sacred Scriptures, Jesus presents many images or metaphors to describe His relationship to us, His beloved people. Today, that image celebrates Jesus as the Good Shepherd. From what we have learned about the work of shepherds, we know they spent all day and night with their sheep. The sheep needed the shepherd to keep them safe and find the best grazing areas for them to eat. The shepherd was also expected to protect the sheep from wild animals. Sheep were not known to be the wisest and cleverest of animals. Often they would fall into holes or get caught in bramble. We all know they often wandered away and needed to be found. (Wow, maybe at second glance, this isn’t exactly complimentary to each of us!) The sheep depended on the shepherd. As the shepherd spent time with the sheep, they would begin to recognize his voice amidst the many voices they might hear. The sheep would seek out the sound of the voice of the shepherd because it became one of comfort and protection. The sheep knew that his voice would lead them to what was best for them.

How fitting it is that Jesus calls Himself the Shepherd and we the sheep. Like sheep, we need to be able to hear the voice of Jesus. We, like those who encountered Jesus, are called to enter into that silence of our hearts so we can recognize His voice in our midst. There weren’t cell phones and television, nor the latest tablets with WiFi +5G in Jesus’ day. But the people of that time were a lot like us. They also had a lot of worries and competing voices to distract them. People in every generation need a voice they can trust, to inspire them, and set the pattern of their lives; someone they can rely on. Using the image of a caring and guiding shepherd, Jesus presents Himself today to us as that trustworthy voice. He said to them, and says to us, that we need to be attentive to His voice and separate it from all the other voices that tug on us and draw us here and there. His voice, He says, will keep us together and also guide us on our journey. Using the image of the Gospel today: His voice will guard our coming in and going out.

We need the voice of Jesus to anchor us as we journey in life. Each moment and stage of our lives, as different as they are, calls out for that voice of truth that beckons us to find peace in the midst of change and sometimes chaos. From childhood to adulthood, life presents different and sometimes difficult challenges. Without the voice of a Good Shepherd, we can go astray and fall into those hidden pits and holes that the road of life sometimes presents.

There are a lot of voices out there that vie for our attention. Voices that promise peace. Maybe we have followed those paths at times and realized they led only to a dead end. So what do we do? Well, the beauty of our Good Shepherd is that He only wishes us to stop and attune our ears and hearts again to Him. BUT to recognize His voice among the many, we have to know HOW to hear Him. So pick up the Scriptures, read, pray, and meditate on the Word; that is, the voice of Jesus the Shepherd. It is through the power of the Word that we come to know Jesus as the Good Shepherd who leads us to His peace.

The more we can hear and recognize His voice the more we know how we can trust Him to lead us to what is best. He will not leave us in our time of need. He has promised to be with us. So it may mean that we need to put aside those parts of our lives that have closed us off and trust again in that ability to love. Do not allow other voices to distract or scatter you. Center yourself in the hope of Jesus. It is in following Jesus that we, in one sense, may lose our lives (at least our old ways), BUT He promises that we will find them anew. What a wonderful hope for us . . . so what’s keeping you?

The Rosary Communion Mass and Luncheon was held Saturday. It was a wonderful celebration and day dedicated to Our Lady. New members were installed as well as the High School group of Daughters of Mary. I would like to thank Fr. Daniel, the President of the Schools of St. Mary, for his inspiring talk. I am very grateful to Prinzipia Duggan and the Rosarians who assisted with the event.

In Jesus, our Resurrected Lord, Fr. Bob

Church of Saint Mary |

Dear Friends:

A Blessed and Happy Easter! We entered this season of Easter seeing the many difficulties facing our world and community. Through it all, the People of God on Long Island continue to be inspired by the Word of God and devoted to being instruments of Eucharistic Revival.

Pope Francis reminds us that "The Eucharist impels us to a strong and committed love of neighbor, for we cannot truly understand or live the meaning of the Eucharist if our hearts are closed to our brothers and sisters, especially those who are poor, suffering, weary or may have gone astray in life."

So crucial to our work as instruments of Eucharistic Revival are the funds raised by the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Those funds help us to strengthen our mission and be present in ministry to so many people throughout our beloved Diocese. We can provide programs and services to our parishes, offer hope to those in need, nurture the faith of our youth, college students, and young adults, and support formation for our deacons, lay leaders, and seminarians.

Ordained in 2023, Rev. Stephen McClernon shared why the Appeal was so important to his formation. “The CMA has been influential in my life. One of the ministries it supports is the Holy Hours for Vocations at the Seminary. We gather young people from across the Island to hold Eucharistic Adoration. During my college years, this experience was a big part of my faith and my decision to become a priest. The Catholic Ministries Appeal has helped foster my vocation to the priesthood.”

Thank you for prayerfully considering a gift to the 2024 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Please pray for the success of this year’s Appeal and for those who are supported by it.

You and your loved ones are remembered in my prayers and Masses. May the Risen Lord guide and strengthen you in this Easter season.

Sincerely in Christ

Religious Education

Last week, our parish students celebrated their First Holy Communion. All present were filled with joy upon seeing the children receive Christ in the Eucharist for the first time. During his homily, Fr. Bob talked about the wonder and grace St. Theresa of Avila experienced each time she received Communion. The great mystic beautifully instructs, “When you receive Communion, close your bodily eyes so that you may open the heart of your soul, then look upon Jesus in the center of your heart.”

From the beginning, the celebration of the Lord’s Eucharist has been the center of the church’s life. May we receive the grace to receive Him often, and always in the spirit of thanksgiving.

We congratulate our First Communicants and invite all parishioners to pray that they will continue to grow in love for Jesus!

Sports Night Makes a Triumphant Return to St. Mary’s High School

After months of careful planning, logistics, creative brainstorming, and many hours of practice, the beloved Sports Night tradition returned to Marist Hall in full glory after an eight-year hiatus.

The historic 59th Sports Night came to fruition under the leadership of Mrs. Sarah de Venoge Griffin ’02, ’06, and Mrs. Jessica Kemp ’06, with the assistance of an enthusiastic alumnae event committee, multiple staff members, and volunteers. The Return of Sports Night featuring Blue York City and White 2K came to life spectacularly on Friday, March 15, 2024. The evening began with a festive Alumni Reception where nearly 200 former Sports Night participants gathered for a pre-event celebration. Our young women did not disappoint their alumnae audience, who cheered for the Blue and White Teams as if they had turned back in time to when they were in their places to compete on the Br. Kenneth gymnasium floor. The evening was filled with old and new memories for the current students and their families, who can now fully appreciate the efforts and camaraderie created among the young women. The leadership skills, talent, and team-building will last a lifetime, much like the friendships forged throughout the 75year existence of Saint Mary’s High School.

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

After a repeat performance on Saturday night, the Blue Team emerged victorious, but we all know God’s greater glory was at work uniting our school community for this treasured event!

Thank you to everyone who helped make this an unforgettable experience for our St. Mary’s High School family – especially our talented young women!

Venerable

Anthony Vincent Gallo

Diocesan Priest, Oblate of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart

Montforte Irpino: 11 January 1899 - Rome: 2 May 1934

O Most Holy Trinity,

Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
