From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“I am the vine, you are the branches.” (John 15:5)

The Scriptures are filled with many metaphors. Today, St. John offers us the image of Jesus as the vine and we as the branches. This model for Christian life reminds us that for us to bear fruit of the faith we need to make sure we are constantly connected to the source of our life…Jesus, like a vine gives life to the branches and allows them to live and bear fruit. When we are one with Jesus, He can offer us His life. Like a branch that is cut off from the vine and withers and dies, when we are separated from Jesus that relationship and faith cannot grow. There is no “nourishment” to sustain us. St. Cyril of Alexandria says

“Like branches growing from a vine, we now draw our life from Christ and we cling to His holy commandment in order to preserve this life…and He helps us grow in love and reverence for God, and teaches us to discern right from wrong and to act with integrity.”

That connectedness is the strength and “nourishment” we need to live as fruitful Christians. The Word of God is a good source of Jesus’ life to us. Meditating, pondering, and devouring the Word keeps us aware of who Jesus is.

In the Acts of the Apostles, we are told that Saul (St. Paul), hearing the voice of Jesus in such a dramatic fashion, is radically and permanently transformed. This transformation moves him from being a major persecutor of the early Church to one of the greatest preachers of Jesus Christ as Lord. Hearing the voice of Jesus was paramount in his life because he now, as St. John tells today, follows “the command of God and believes in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ.” St. John continues to remind us to love one another as He commanded us. When we profess the Lordship of Jesus and follow His commands, we remain in Him. It is in Him that we are continually nourished and strengthened in our faith. As you know, strengthened in the Vine, we find our true life in Jesus.

The most powerful experience of the life of Jesus is, of course, the Eucharist. It is in the Mass that Jesus, as the vine, gives us His very self as gift. This gift unites us to Jesus is a way no other experience can come as close. See in the Eucharist the unity and strength that comes from Jesus. St. Augustine says “The one who devoutly participates in Holy Mass will receive a great vigor to enable him to resist sin.” When we move from sin, we naturally embrace a deeper experience of Jesus in our lives and hence our actions. Let His holy presence make you a “fruitful vine.” Come with devotion and reverence to receive Our Lord in this most wondrous gift. Allow the vine to nourish your faith in this life so you may preserve it for life eternal.

This week, we begin the month of May, the month dedicated to Our Blessed Mother. I encourage you to honor her by saying the Rosary as a family. Let her maternal love lead you closer to her Son, Jesus.

In Jesus, our Resurrected Lord, and Mary, our Mother, Fr. Bob

Rosary Society Celebrates Their Annual Induction Mass and Communion Brunch

On Saturday, April 20th, the Rosary Society held their annual Induction Mass and Communion Brunch preceded by the recitation of the Rosary. Over fifty Rosarians and family members were present for the official induction of four Rosarians (at top right) June Keller, Ingrid Keating, Jennifer LeChance, and Adrianna Duggan and four Daughters of Mary (at bottom right) Grace Romito, Abby (Abigail) Guiheen, Emma Alameda, and Caterina Bootsma with each inductee receiving their medals. The four Daughters inductees are all students at St Mary’s. They join nine other Daughters of Mary, five of whom attend St. Mary’s High School and four attend other Catholic High Schools. The Daughters of Mary meet under the direction of Cathy Morrissey, Erin Morrissey-McNamara and Laura Sciametta. Throughout the school year, these girls have demonstrated commitment to the mission of the Rosary Society in their devotion to Our Blessed Mother at regular prayer meetings as well as charitable service to the parish community.

At the brunch which followed at North Hempstead Country Club, the new Daughters of Mary as well as existing Daughters Caroline, Serene, and Saoirse were recognized at the brunch. The three existing Daughters received a certificate of recognition for their continued participation.

The Rosarians had the pleasure of listening to a talk by the Very Rev. Dom Daniel

Steven Nash, Can. Reg., Pastor of St. Rocco in Glen Cove and St. Hyacinth in Glen Head, and President of the Schools of St. Mary. He shared his story of how he came to be a Canon, living in a community under an Augustinian rule. We thank Father Daniel for taking the time out of his busy schedule to speak with the Rosarians. We are very fortunate to have Father as part of our community.

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

Students Trace their Family Origins to Embrace their Past and Share their Stories

The second-grade students at Saint Mary’s Elementary School recently embarked on a fascinating journey to discover their family origins. These young explorers worked on their projects in the classroom and at home, creating a beautiful kaleidoscope of heritage and tradition by tracing ancestral roots and celebrating diverse cultures. From Italy to India, Ghana to Greece, and points in between, our young scholars embraced the beauty of their family stories. Beyond their geography lessons, they learned the power of connection and unity in diversity, as we are all children of God. Their smiling faces showed how happy and proud they felt upon sharing their stories with their classmates and teachers. Here’s to embracing our past to illuminate our future!

St. Mary’s Gaels Varsity Lacrosse Honors Fallen Alumnus

On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, the Saint Mary’s High School Varsity Lacrosse team took to the field with “JD” monogram patches on their jerseys in honor of fallen NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller, who was a member of the Class of 2010 and a former Gaels championship team lacrosse player. The visiting team, Xaverian High School, also paid tribute to the fallen alumnus by wearing blue ribbons on their jerseys for the non-league game. Together, the teams, coaches, and attendees prayed and shared a moment of silence before the game. St. Mary’s Athletic Director Patrick Welsh noted, “We are grateful to the Xaverian Clippers for demonstrating their support of our school during this difficult time. Although we lost (6-8), I was proud of our team and coaching staff for their remarkable strength and sportsmanship during this game.”

St. Mary’s High School will continue to remember their fellow Gael, fallen hero, and brother in Christ. The school is planning largerscale events later this year to honor the memory of Detective Diller.

Getting Closer to God: Break Negative Habits and Be Born Again in God’s Image

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born again.” (John 3:3)

In this Easter Season of Resurrection: How can you get closer to God? Can you create new healthy habits? Can you make the love and devotion to the Lord a part of your daily life?

As we know, we are all imperfect. Our journey on earth is to improve ourselves in the likeness of God and change our actions to reflect his actions and messages for us. When you are faced with a challenging situation, a good question to ask yourself is: “What would God do or what advice would God give you?”

Is it your anger expression that hurts others and ultimately yourself? Does your anxiety overtake your ability to enjoy your life? Are you lost in searching for the next bigger and better acquisition? Do you envy what others have and cannot find beauty in your own life? Do fears and worry define and drive your thinking and cheat you of seeing and appreciating the beauty in your life? Do substances overpower you, so you are lost in a world of distortions and wishes, leaving those around you in angst, fear, and loneliness? And, leaving you in destructive patterns and behaviors that influence your life and stop you from evolving in a positive manner? I bet there are many questions you can entertain about your behaviors, life, and adjustment. Just ask yourself: What would God tell you to do?

How would God deal with similar situations you find yourself struggling with? Remember, when God lived on earth, he suffered as a human being to show us the way.

So, you might ask: “How would God guide your actions?”

Let’s take the example of your expression of anger. This is such a common problem. For many, it is not what you say, it is the way you say it. How do you learn to control your temper so you can state your message in a way that it can be received? You need to emotionally regulate yourself and state your thoughts and feelings directly.

Emotional regulation means that you learn to calm your mind so you can think with logic from God rather than from being over excited and destructive in your delivery. How do you integrate God’s grace and love into yourself so you can touch others with understanding and strength in times of emotional upheaval? By praying to God for transformation of anger to strength and understanding. That will enable you to accept the guidance of the Holy Spirit to stop the negative habits in the face of distress and challenge.

So, when you feel yourself getting upset for whatever the reason: Say a prayer, calm your mind that is overexcited, and envision the strength of the Lord over you. Put out the fire within your brain that travels to many parts of your body and take a deep breath and respond to your challenging situation. You can do it. I tell my children and adolescent patients to envision what a fire fighter does when there is a fire. Envision water coming from a firehose putting out the fire and say a prayer.

Below is a prayer for internal calm that you can say. Practice it and think about its meaning. When a situation arises, say that prayer to our dear Lord and you will be able to take the necessary steps to deal with your challenges. Remember: The Holy Spirit is always available to guide you. I envision the power of the Holy Spirit on my shoulder that is there for the taking when I need HIM. If you transform your challenge, you will not have to transmit your challenge in a negative manner and create further chaos and pain in your life and those you touch.

My Dear Lord: I know you are always here for me. I thank you for all the gifts of my life. I am asking you to help me with my emotions so I may deal with my behaviors, thoughts, and actions that I would like to change. It is very difficult when I become upset not to resort to my actions that are laden with anger, insecurity, fear, and (put what you are struggling with here). Help me calm my emotions that are on fire now and help me realize I can work through the necessary steps to find resolution with the Holy Spirt as my guide.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

In the Gospel today, Jesus says “Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” Indeed, by helping the poor we can “bear much fruit” and we find that with Jesus we can do everything. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will show that you are indeed the disciple of Jesus as it will bring your love to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Praying with the Blessed Sacrament

From the very beginning of the Christian story, the Eucharist has been central. It has been called the Source and Summit of the Christian Life. Through the celebration of the Mass, we come to a deeper union with Christ, our Lord and Savior.

But our prayer with the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament does not have to end with the Mass. One true gift of our Church is that this meal for the journey is also the companion on our journey.

Through time spent in prayer with Christ we come to a deeper sense of ourselves. And yet, when one begins praying before the Blessed Sacrament it can be difficult to find a way. It can sometimes be a struggle to know what to say or how to present oneself to the Divine Creator..

As St. Alphonsus Liguori observed, “Know also that you will probably gain more by praying fifteen minutes before the Blessed Sacrament than by all the other spiritual exercises of the day.”

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Closing Benediction

Monday 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church

Prayer in Full Faith St.

Thomas More (1478-1535)

Give me, good Lord, a full and fervent charity, a love of you, good Lord, incomparable above the love of myself; and that I love nothing to your displeasure but everything in an order to you. Take from me, good Lord, this lukewarm fashion, or rather this cold manner of meditation and this dullness in praying to you.

And give me warmth, delight, and life in thinking about you. And give me your grace to long for your holy sacraments and specially to rejoice in the presence of your blessed body, sweet Savior, in the Holy Sacrament of the Altar, and duly to thank you for your gracious coming.
