A Refection by Father Raphael
19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B REFLECTIONS ON TODAY’S READINGS BE IMITATORS OF GOD
Te readings this Sunday broadly continue our Eucharistic theme. Te frst reading from 1 Kings 19:4-8 recounts the feeding of Elijah in the desert and his subsequent journey to Horeb. In verse 4 of this reading, Elijah makes the statement, “I am no better than my ancestors.” Tis allows us to make comparison of the two events: himself and his ancestors. In the frst part of the Book of Exodus, Israel is in Egypt. It is within this context of the fight from Egypt that the Lord feeds his people in the wilderness with manna (Exodus 16) and with water (Exodus 17). Tese stories are similar to Elijah’s, (in today’s frst reading) except that the afair in the case of Elijah is portrayed as more severe than that of his ancestor, Moses. Moses led a nation out of slavery, but Elijah is all alone with his own people at his heels.
Where will the prophet Elijah fnd strength in this desperate situation? He leans back on the experience of his ancestors and sets out to relive their past experience. Why? It is because the experience of his ancestor Moses is still valid to imitate. “Te older is better” was the principle he adopted. At this point Elijah turns back to Moses for leadership. Tis is why Elijah is on his way to the same place where the Lord frst encountered Moses – Mount Horeb. Te reason is, “I am not better than my ancestors.”
Furthermore, the example of how his ancestors were fed by the Lord with manna on the desert is the same manner that Elijah was fed by an angel of the Lord on his way to Horeb; a present imitation of the past. It is the food from God, the food that gives strength to the weary, the food for the journey. In short, it is the food from God, to us, and for our salvation.
In the Gospel, the Jews murmured when they heard Jesus say “I am the bread which came from heaven.” Tis is because they knew his parents and, probably, his grandparents. How could Jesus come down from heaven and be better than his ancestors? Te Jewish principle remains, “the older is better.” If the father of Jesus is a carpenter, Jesus cannot claim to be more than that, they murmured.
Clearly Jesus was referring to God as his Father, while the Jews were referring to Joseph. Jesus does not really contest the principle “the older is better.” He only argues that God is his Father and “they will all be taught by God.” Tis points to the source of his wisdom. Moreover, he has not just learned by “hearing” the Father (v. 45), he has “seen” the Father indicating a closer and immediate relationship. Tis is the point in the Letter to the Ephesians, Chapter 5:1 (today’s second reading).
In the second reading, Paul invites the church community of Ephesus to be imitators of God. It is in this same manner that we are being invited to be imitators of God. By this, we are called to put away all vices such as bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and slander; rather put on the virtues of kindness, tenderheartedness, forgiveness, loving, etc. Elijah imitated his ancestors; Jesus imitated his heavenly Father; the Ephesians must imitate God and so must we. Remember, “Te older is better.”
Blessed Day, Father Raphael

“Christ
the Savior with the Eucharist” by Juan de Juanes (1503-1579)
Celebrating the Eucharist “Food for the Journey”
His Excellency Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, celebrated the 5:00 PM Saturday Vigil Mass on August 3, 2024, at the Church of Saint Mary. The Mass was offered in remembrance of his mother, Patricia, who died earlier this year and also celebrated the shared birthday of his parents, who were born on the same day, two years apart. With his father, Robert J. Brennan, Sr., and relatives present to join the celebration of the Eucharist, Bishop Brennan shared a heartwarming story of his family’s journey from Brooklyn to Long Island before the construction of the Expressway and how food was sustenance for their journey correlating to the Gospel for the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
As a native of Lindenhurst and a lifelong product of Catholic education, Bishop Brennan's journey is one that resonates deeply with our parish. His ordination to the priesthood in 1989 marked the beginning of a remarkable career, with several successful pastoral assignments leading to his installation as an Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. In 2019, he was appointed as the Bishop of Columbus, Ohio, and on November 30, 2021, he became the Eighth Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn. His family, too, has a special place in our hearts. His sister, Mrs. Theresa Kemp, is the principal of St. Mary’s Elementary and Middle Schools, a role she fulfills with grace and dedication.
The clergy and parishioners of St. Mary’s were filled with joy and gratitude as we welcomed Bishop Brennan. His presence and the Mass he celebrated were a testament to the warm and hospitable spirit of our parish. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Bishop Brennan for sharing this special time with us and to his family for allowing us to join them in prayer at St. Mary’s for their special intentions. May God continue to bless you abundantly in your service to the people of the Catholic Church.
Rev. Fr. Anthony Saliba, Bishop Robert J. Brennan, and Rev. Fr. Robert A. Romeo before the processional for Mass on Saturday, August 3, 2024.

Tursday, August 15th - Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On this day, the Church commemorates the belief that when Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, died, her body was “assumed” into heaven, instead of going through the natural process of physical decay upon death.
Although in the early days of Christianity no relics of Mary could be found, in Jerusalem there was an empty tomb that became a destination for pilgrims. Additionally, quotes, letters, and sermons of these early followers of Christ suggested the Assumption of Our Lady. During the early 300’s A.D., a celebration known as the “memory of Mary” began. St. John of Damascus, a Doctor of the Church due to his writings on the Assumption, recounted that in 451 A.D. the Roman emperor Marcian inquired about obtaining the remains of Mary at the Council of Chalcedon (Turkey). Te response came from St. Juvenal, at that time the Bishop of Jerusalem: “... Mary died in the presence of all the Apostles, but that her tomb, when opened upon the request of St. Tomas, was found empty; the Apostles concluded that the body was taken up to heaven.”
In 1950, Pope Pius XII declared the Assumption of Mary ofcial dogma (belief) of the Roman Catholic Church. Tus the Catholic Church teaches that the Virgin Mary “having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.”
Prayer for the Assumption
Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Jesus, Our Mother, we believe in your triumphant Assumption into Heaven where the Angels and Saints acclaim you as Queen of Heaven and Earth.
We are confdent that you watch over our daily lives and we ask that you intercede for us now. (Mention your intentions)
After this earthly life, show us Jesus, the Blessed fruit of your womb, O kind, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. O Queen assumed into heaven, pray for us. Amen.

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will host its Annual Friends of the Poor Walk at Hecksher State Park in East Islip.
The Society is one of the largest Catholic lay organizations in the world and seeks to relieve suffering through person-to-person involvement of its members with those in need. Vincentian volunteers make home visits to families who ask for help and try to alleviate their stress in some way by offering material, financial and spiritual aid. They also collaborate directly with our Good Samaritan House in serving families in the neighborhood.
In our own St. Mary’s Conference, this year alone, we have provided assistance with furniture, utility payments, rent payments, medical expense aid, and help with car repair bills. These hardships may be a result of a catastrophic illness, loss of employment, or the death of a breadwinner. A helping hand to meet an acute need may be all someone needs to get back on their feet.
