A Refection by Father Raphael
REFLECTION FOR THE 21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR B
THEME: THE CHRISTIAN FREEDOM - THE CHOICE IS YOURS
Te frst reading today is from Joshua 24:1-2; 15-18. Te passage is from the last chapter of the book and the context is the renewal of the covenant after the entry into the Promised Land, under the leadership of Joshua at Shechem. Joshua is now asking the twelve tribes to make a choice as God has completely fulflled his side of the bargain. God has led his people out of Egypt, has led them to conquer Canaan, and has given them the land. So, at this point Israel is left to choose whether their stay in the land will be temporary or permanent.
Te gathered population also has to decide whether they will obey the Lord or obey the local gods. Tey have the choice of renewing the Sinai commitment (Exodus 19-24) or not, with Joshua indicating the clear choice of himself and his household. Te people in unison and without dissent also made their option for the Lord as the covenant is renewed with the verbal acceptance.
Te Gospel reading taken from John 6:60-69 is clearly another passage about choice. Tis is the fnal piece of our fveSunday-long readings in John Chapter 6 on the bread of life discourses. Te entire passage began with the question of the feeding of the fve thousand. Today, Jesus asks his disciples a similar question as seen in the frst reading: Do they wish to stay with him or to leave? Tis demands a hard choice. John is clear that many of the disciples of Jesus left. Te twelve remained faithful. Peter then gives expression to the faith of the twelve. Peter’s profession resolves the dilemma of the disciples. It denotes a frm and a fnal decision. He fully afrms the teaching of Jesus Christ as the key to life. Tis act of faith recognizes Jesus as the consecrated one. Let us note that “the path to life in not always the path of the majority.”
In the second reading from Ephesians 5:21-32, Paul says husbands and wives are a living refection of the love between Christ and the Church. Te marriage relationship calls for recognition of the husband’s leadership role like Joshua in the frst reading and Peter in the Gospel reading. It is a case of respect for Christ who is present in all the faithful. Te husband (Leader), is bound as well by Christian principles to sacrifce himself entirely for his wife (followers) as did Christ for his Church.
People choose to walk away from Christ today for various reasons. But most often it is not with Christ that people have difculty. Tey would say that their problem is with the Church more than with Christ. Others may admit that it is the pull of the world or their attraction to sin that destroys their Christian allegiance. Yes, we are always free to walk away. But, as Catholics, we should not walk away from the Church, but remain in it because the Church is still the bride of Christ.
It is easy to slip into going about in our own ways. But the time comes when we have to choose who or what will control us. Te choice is yours. Will it be God, your own limited personality, or another imperfect substitute? Once you have chosen to be controlled by God’s Spirit, reafrm your choice every day. Take a defnite stand for the Lord like Joshua and Peter who displayed a spiritual leadership (as husbands). Regardless of what others decided, Joshua and Peter made a commitment to God, they were determined to set an example of living by their decision. For, “the way we live gives others the strength of their commitments to serving God.”
Dear brothers and sisters, I conclude with Peter’s reply again, “Lord, to whom shall we go?” Peter answered for all of us –there is no other way. Jesus alone has the words of eternal life. People look for eternal life everywhere and miss Christ, the only source. I hope you will not be one of them. Stay with Jesus, especially when you are confused or feel alone. As we grow in our faith, we may be tempted to turn away because Jesus’ lessons or the Church’s teachings are difcult. Will your response be to give up, ignore certain teachings, or reject Christ? Instead, ask God to show you what the teachings mean and how they apply to your life. Tere is no middle ground with Jesus. Either accept or reject him. However, Jesus is not trying to repel anyone with his teachings, for forced love is no love at all. Since God wants a free response from us, our liberty is never violated.
Te responsorial psalm crowns it all beautifully by giving a clear indication that the lowly and the authentic poor of God do not reject him or walk in another direction. Te Choice is Yours!
Stay blessed!
Father Raphael
J Stewards of God’s Gifts
In today’s Gospel, many people turn away and leave Jesus because His teaching is “hard.” Being a disciple of Christ is about being faithful to His teachings and turning from sin. With God’s help, we can live a good, faithful life. And when we slip, we can always run to God’s mercy in Confession.
Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Prayer: To be the best versions of ourselves, to be the best Christians we can be, we need to have a solid prayer life. If prayer is not something you do on a daily basis, or if your prayer life is lacking, take time this week to start building that pillar in your life.

Readings and Questions for Faith Sharing on the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading I: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8
For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the Lord, our God, is to us whenever we call upon him?
Reading II: James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27
Be doers of the word, not hearers only, deluding yourselves.
Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23
Nothing that enters one from outside can defle that person; but the things that come out from within are what defle.
Question for Adults:
Are there obstacles that keep me from living my faith? How am I working through them?
Question for Children:
Am I a “doer of God’s word?”
Do I try to imitate Jesus in all that I do?

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks “Do you also want to leave?” We must ask ourselves if we really want to hear the good news of his love for us and for others. Is the word of God able to break into our consciousness, change us and call us to hear the cries of the poor? Tis month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to hear the cries of the poor by assisting families, providing food, paying for utility, rent and other bills. God Bless You! y
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Good Samaritan House Announces Fall Bereavement Group
A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on September 14, 2024.
The session will run for ten consecutive weeks on Saturdays from 9:30-11:00 AM. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.
The group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling – including non-parishioners and people of other faiths. It should be noted though, St. Mary's bereavement sessions are faith based sessions that at times refer to bible verses or prayers to assist in the healing process.

Wheelchair Initiative Continues by Way of the Knights of Columbus
Te Knights of Columbus Fr. William A. Daly, SJ Council #2122, launched a Wheelchair Initiative within the parish in 2022. Modeled after the global program created by the Knights that makes thousands of wheelchairs available worldwide to veterans and those in need, the program has since been helpful to parishioners who need temporary, short, or long-term use of a wheelchair. As the Knights look to continue their initiative this Fall, their goal is to provide more help within our parish community simply by getting the word out of this opportunity. Presently, the Knights have two wheelchairs available and can obtain additional wheelchairs with advance notice. For more information or to sign out a wheelchair, please get in touch with the Parish Ofce at 516-627-0385.

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will host its Annual Friends of the Poor Walk at Heckscher State Park in East Islip.
The Society is one of the largest Catholic lay organizations in the world and seeks to relieve suffering through person-to-person involvement of its members with those in need. Vincentian volunteers make home visits to families who ask for help and try to alleviate their stress in some way by offering material, financial and spiritual aid. They also collaborate directly with our Good Samaritan House in serving families in the neighborhood.
In our own St. Mary’s Conference, this year alone, we have provided assistance with furniture, utility payments, rent payments, medical expense aid, and help with car repair bills. These hardships may be a result of a catastrophic illness, loss of employment, or the death of a breadwinner. A helping hand to meet an acute need may be all someone needs to get back on their feet.
ALL FUNDS RAISED BY OUR TEAM THROUGH THIS EVENT WILL REMAIN WITH OUR ST.
