The Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time | August 27, 2023
Fr.
Dear Parishioners,
In the last two weeks we have journeyed with Kate Bowler who, on account of the ordinariness of her life and the resilience of her faith, we have come to regard almost as someone we know personally, a neighbor or fellow parishioner. Her tragedy is no different from the numerous tragedies that assail ordinary people from time to time, including members of our families or friends and acquaintances. Her personal struggle for meaning, in the face of what looks like a whole-life-catastrophe, gives us insights into how we too could cope with events in our lives that we cannot control. When one is afflicted as Kate is, they need a source of strength and consolation, a kind of fulcrum to help them see other sides of life beyond that challenge.
Today, I would like to discuss what I consider to be Kate’s staying power as a terminal cancer patient. In other words, what it is that gives her hope in this hopeless situation. Kate is herself a great lover with a big heart, and she leaves no one in doubt as to the love she has for her family. At every turn, the reader is made aware that her love is limitless, and that it is reciprocated in equal measure by her family. Her husband, Toban, and their baby, Zach, constitute the center of her world, to which and around which her thoughts swirl constantly. One can say; therefore, that despite the intense suffering that she is bearing, the irrepressible desire to survive, and live for them energizes her, and keeps her hope alive. Throughout the book, Kate does not give up hope of recovery. She wrestles with God, proverbially, though her health is failing, her body is aching, and the prospects for her recovery are unclear. She keeps imagining the time when all sickness would be gone from her body, and she can be the wife and mother she should be to her husband and child. The love she shares with Toban is intense and sincere, and she remembers the excitement that first glued them together as teenagers. On her sick bed she cannot understand or accept that all that will be over in a short time.
Those of you, dear friends, who had the good fortune of finding the right person to be married to when you were very young, surely remember how you felt about one another. You must have felt somewhat foolish in your belief in a certain glorious forever after, brimming with all the good thoughts and idealisms that your young minds could construct and dream about. It was no different for Kate! Though her choice of Toban at the age of twenty-two was made in sheer youthful love and, perhaps, ignorance, their wedding day turns out to be one of two perfect moments in her life. Kate has grown to cherish Toban as a great investment piece that increases in value with time, and even more so! She invested, so to speak, in “a beachfront property” when she could have settled with “a suburban condo” (p. 8)! Words like these are like a window into Kate’s heart, and the inestimable value she saw in him. In that ‘perfect moment’ on their wedding day, she writes that they “burst through the church doors and stood, breathless, alone as husband and wife, gazing at each other like complete idiots” (p. 12).
What makes this interesting is that in that ‘perfect moment’ when they were joined to each other, none of the lovebirds ever dreamt of the pain and suffering that would come their way – so much for better, for worse! The second of her perfect moments came when their baby, Zach, was born. The gift of this baby is even more appreciated because, unlike some married couples who are able to achieve pregnancy with ease, Kate and Toban waited almost ten years for their baby. During this period of ‘waiting’ they encountered many friends and acquaintances that chirped about their successes and make it look as if Kate and Toban’s lack of success in this endeavor was, somehow, their fault.
There is a veritable temptation at times like these for married couples to blame one another in their frustration. They seem to forget that “Children are a gift from the Lord”(Psalm 127:3). Between Toban and Kate; however, and, in spite of the many failed attempts, they neither lose hope in God, nor blame each other for their unfruitful efforts. When, finally Kate becomes pregnant, the gestation period was long and complicated, and labor for this desired and longed-for child lasted nearly two days, until he was delivered by cesarean section. Kate’s baby was only a toddler when she was diagnosed with this invasive cancer! One may be tempted to ask God ‘Why?’

A Letter from
Eddy Church of Saint Mary |
On getting her diagnosis Kate writes,
“I thought this life was only getting started, but now I am supposed to contemplate its sudden conclusion. I am supposed to imagine the end of my whirling mind, the slowing of my breath, a sunken vessel where my heart now beats. But, worse, it would be the conclusion of this thing I have built – a family” (p. 12).
The experiences of Kate and Toban as a young married family are worth elaborating further. When God calls a man and woman to marital love, He calls them to His service; calls them to fecundity, and to the salvation of others. So, marriage is not just about the two individuals who have come together, it opens up to the Church and to the world. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes marriage as “directed towards the salvation of others” (CCC 1534). This means that marriage calls the spouses out of themselves (preoccupation with themselves) and into communion with each other (in marital love) and with the family that comes out of that union. As that union is entirely before the Lord, the gift of children is also before Him, and He gives as He wills, to whom He wills, in the measure He wills.
In the order of the loves that hold Kate together during the many periods of trial is the love of her parents. Family love is sacrificial and, perhaps nowhere more evident in the love that parents have for their children. This is a natural instinct that is tested beyond reason in the series of ordeals of her life. Their love remains steadfast and rock-solid. She claims in the book that this rich family bonding is characteristic of Mennonite solidarity, which insists that “suffering never be done alone” (p. 62), and their apparent capacity for compassion is exemplified in the way they stick together through thick or thin. Whereas there may be some truth in this assertion, compassion has rich a Christian meaning. The Latin word compassio means ‘suffering (together) with’ or ‘fellow suffering’, and was used in Ecclesiastical Latin to denote the unique quality of the God of Israel of doing so much more than is needed or necessary to save His people and bring them relief: “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him” (Psalm 103:13). In the New Testament, compassion provokes Jesus’ acts of mercy (Cf. Matthew 20:30-34; Luke 18:35). Wearied though Kate’s parents are by the sudden interruption of their otherwise smooth lives, they allow their parental instinct to weigh in on them, and they accept to be interrupted for the sake of their daughter.
I have highlighted the importance of the support and encouragement of our families in all situations of life, good or bad. Every child needs the love and protection of its parents first, and then society as well has responsibility to create an environment that is fitting and amenable to the total growth and development of the human person. The sad news of the rise in suicide rates in many developed and affluent societies is, perhaps, an indication of something that we all, as society, have failed to do. The resilience and hope that Kate has shown in the face of a debilitating disease must be credited to the love and support of her family. May we be family to all who suffer greatly and have no family to comfort them. Amen!

Alzheimer’s Educational Series Coming to St. Mary’s this Fall
The Church of Saint Mary is pleased to announce an upcoming Educational Series for the fall season as part of the parish outreach efforts through the newly renovated Good Samaritan House – serving those in need. The series will be hosted at St. Mary’s in collaboration with the Long Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. The Chapter has generously offered to conduct two types of seminars this fall. The first seminar aims to provide information to those at risk of developing Alzheimer’s. The second seminar will focus on providing information and support to caregivers of individuals with the disease.
According to Eileen Symmons, director of communications for the Church and Schools of St. Mary, “Our initiative to present educational opportunities on various topics is just one of the many ways we look to serve the community through our Office of Parish Social Ministry known as the Good Samaritan House. By working with organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association, we can provide access to resources and facilitate programming for our parishioners, school community, and residents of the greater Manhasset area right here on our campus as part of our Catholic faith to carry out corporal works of mercy to help the sick and those in need. With the upcoming two-part series on Alzheimer’s, St. Mary’s will bring people
together on the patient side and those with a common goal to compassionately care for a loved one while navigating the difficult journey as a caregiver.”
The Long Island Chapter’s Executive Director, Douglas Davidson, shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration. “The Long Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is committed to the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. We look forward to partnering with St. Mary’s to bring important resources to their parishioners.”
Five one-hour sessions will be offered in the Parish Ministry Center beginning on Monday, October 16. Advance registration is requested. For more information, please contact the Director of Parish Social Ministry, Kathleen Kosciusko, at 516-365-2705 or kkosciusko@stmary.ws.
Enrollment is open to parishioners, non-parishioners, and the community at large. We encourage you to share this opportunity with loved ones and friends. To view the schedule or register for one or more of these seminars, please see the opposite page.

“IF YOU PUT ALL THE LOVE OF ALL THE mothers INTO ONE HEART, IT STILL WOULD NOT EQUAL THE LOVE OF THE heart of Mary FOR HER CHILDREN.”
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Prayer at Adoration
I adore you, O Infinite Goodness, who has wrought so many miracles, in order to reveal your love to us. I adore you, with all the angels and saints, and with those chosen souls that are now already the blessed of your Father and are all aglow with burning love for you. I adore you with all your friends, O Jesus!
A Short Visit to the Blessed Sacrament Before Meditation
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
I place myself in the presence of Him, in whose Incarnate Presence I am before. I place myself there. I adore Thee, O my Saviour, present here as God and man, in soul and body, in true flesh and blood. I acknowledge and confess that I kneel before that Sacred Humanity, which was conceived in Mary’s womb and lay in Mary’s bosom; which grew up to man’s estate, and by the Sea of Galilee called the Twelve, wrought miracles, and spoke words of wisdom and peace; which in due season hung on the cross, lay in the tomb, rose from the dead, and now reigns in heaven.
I praise, and bless, and give myself wholly to Him, Who is the true Bread of my soul, and my everlasting joy. (by John Henry Newman)
Adoration Prayer and Giving God Glory
“Praise his glorious name forever! Let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and amen!” (Psalm 72:19) Holy God, all glory belongs to you. I come to you in prayer to glorify your name—not because of what you do, but because of who you are. I adore you for being my Abba Father. Your unconditional love for me stretches to the highest mountain peaks and reaches to the depths of the seas. It is beyond anything I can fathom. Your love never ends, and great is your faithfulness! (Lamentations 3:23)

Venerable Anthony Vincent
Gallo

Montforte Irpino: 11 January 1899 - Rome: 2 May 1934
O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
