Monday, August 5th - Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major or Our Lady of the Snows

On August 5th, the Catholic Church celebrates the dedication of a basilica in Rome, known as St. Mary Major (Santa Maria Maggiore), or Our Lady of the Snows. St. Mary Major was originally dedicated after the Church had confrmed Our Lady’s title as “Mother of God,” in the 400’s A.D. It is the largest church building in the world named in Mary’s honor. Several popes are buried there, as is St. Jerome. Te “snow” comes from a legend of a wealthy couple who prayed to Mary, asking for a sign as to how they could best put forth a donation to the Church. In a dream, Mary appeared to the husband, asking for a church to be built in her honor. Mary promised to identify the location for the new church by sending a snowfall there. Tis couple approached the Pope (Liberius) with the news, who coincidentally had a very similar dream. And on August 5th, 352 A.D., tradition holds that snow fell in Rome, on the spot where the basilica is now located. Although the feast now celebrates the anniversary of the dedication of the basilica, each year on August 5th, white rose petals are dropped from the high point of the church’s dome during Mass.

St. Mary Major is one of the seven pilgrimage Catholic churches of Rome. Mary, Mother of God, Pray for Us!

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

A Prayer for America

Father, we beg Your blessing for the Right to Life, the Unborn, the weak, the sick and the old; all who are fnding themselves being targets of the vicious culture of death; that our Lord Jesus bless and protect all who stand up for the Christian dignity of persons.

Tat God enlighten those who are traveling down death’s highway by their involvement, in any way, with either the contemporary death culture, selfsm, relativism, or any of the new age errors of our times, that God envelop our culture with His Divine protection and help us both individually and as a nation to true enlightenment, conversion and repentance of ourselves and our culture.

Help us to turn from our national sin of abortion, and return to, and once again become a Christian nation, on the narrow road, that is, the path to becoming a nation and culture under God. Amen.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Closing Benediction

Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church

A Prayer for Our Nation’s Election

O God, we acknowledge You today as Lord, Not only of individuals, but of nations and governments.

We thank You for the privilege

Of being able to organize ourselves politically And of knowing that political loyalty

Does not have to mean disloyalty to You.

We thank You for Your law,

Which our Founding Fathers acknowledged And recognized as higher than any human law. We thank You for the opportunity that this election year puts before us,

To exercise our solemn duty not only to vote, But to infuence countless others to vote, And to vote correctly.

Lord, we pray that Your people may be awakened.

Let them realize that while politics is not their salvation,

Teir response to You requires that they be politically active.

Awaken Your people to know that they are not called to be a sect feeing the world

But rather a community of faith renewing the world.

Awaken them that the same hands lifted up to You in prayer Are the hands that pull the lever in the voting booth; Tat the same eyes that read Your Word

Are the eyes that read the names on the ballot, And that they do not cease to be Christians When they enter the voting booth.

Awaken Your people to a commitment to justice, To the sanctity of marriage and the family, To the dignity of each individual human life, And to the truth that human rights begin when Human Lives Begin, And not one moment later.

Lord, we rejoice today

Tat we are citizens of Your kingdom.

May that make us all the more committed To being faithful citizens on earth.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

THE NEXT SVDP MEETING IS WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7TH via ZOOM

We will resume in-person meetings in September if anyone would like to join us.

We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. Tere are no special qualifcations to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.

Te Gospel tells us “Tis is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” By “listening” we are able to live the gospel. Gospel living is something so simple as taking the time to listen to those who need to spill out their hearts when seeking help. Trough your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you enable the members of the Society to become a “listening heart” to the hungry, the homeless and the struggling poor.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Tank you for your continued support.
