From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners, “I want you to be happy, always happy in the Lord.” (Philippians 4:4)

Today we celebrate Gaudete or “joyful” Sunday. Tis third week of Advent brings us closer to our celebration of Christmas. Te readings are flled with joy in the Lord. Our Old Testament Reading from the Prophet Zephaniah exhorts Israel to “shout for joy” because God has taken away their sins and given them the hope of redemption. St. Paul calls his listeners to be happy in the Lord because the Lord is near. Te pink candle (and vestments) remind us of the joy of this week. Tat joy must be ours. So how do we live in the joyful expectation of the coming of the Messiah? St. Paul goes on to tell us that we need the peace of God to fnd that joy. Tat joy, as we know, is discovered in a life lived in Jesus.

St. John the Baptist, who again is the central voice in the Gospel, gives some great advice on how to fnd the happiness of God. It is in giving of ourselves. St. Luke quotes the Baptist as exhorting us to share what we have. “If anyone has two tunics, they must share with the one who has none and the one with something to eat must do the same.” Te theme of sharing with those in need is one that continually repeats itself in the Scriptures. If it is so often repeated, that makes sense for it to be looked at by us (and maybe again and again). Why?

Well, the Gospel goes on to tell us that in whatever state of life we fnd ourselves we need to act in justice and truth with all those we meet. Our hearts need to be open to those who are struggling so that our actions may relieve those burdens. Tis is such a key to true Christian living. Jesus challenges us to live without the blinders that close us to the needs around us. He also challenges us to take the next step in giving of ourselves. It is when we let go of that attempted control of our lives that we are able to let God be in control. Tis is, of course, not easy...BUT, and I cannot stress this enough...when we free ourselves to trust, then that true peace can be ours. We need, as St. Paul tells us, to pray that the way of God may truly be ours. He also reminds us to ofer thanksgiving to God. In being thankful, we become aware of the blessings in our own life and, maybe realizing those blessings, it becomes easier to share with those around us.

One of the things I wish to do here at St. Mary’s is to expand our visions to the varied needs there are in the world. I will often invite outside groups come in to talk about the good work they do and to invite us to share their ministry by our participation. Some may resent the “intrusion” but I am convinced through my study of the Scriptures, the teachings of the Church, and through my own prayer life that Jesus calls us to that continual generosity. Tese varied groups will represent a cross section of the needs of the world...local, national, and worldwide. Te more we are made aware, the more Jesus can open our hearts.

I believe I am called, as pastor, to put as many plates on the table so we can choose what needs we wish to assist. So groups will always be welcomed here. What I ask of you is to pray and ask Jesus what HE wants of you and what charities He calls you to be a part of. Don’t give for the sake of giving (unless you feel called to), BUT bring it always to the Lord to see what HE calls you to. When we act in the Lord Jesus’ purpose, then we are open to His plan and, following His plan, we are promised His peace. Something to think about!

You may have noticed that we are continuing the tradition during the seasons of Advent and Lent of chanting the Holy, Holy (Sanctus) and the Lamb of God (Angus Dei) in Latin and the Lord, have mercy (Kyrie) in Greek. Te directives of the Second Vatican Council and the encouragement of recent Popes (Pope Francis included) have asked that the faithful be familiar with the responses of the Mass in the ancient languages of the Church and especially the Liturgy. Te words are found on the plastic sheets in the pews. Tis certainly connects us in a deeper way to the Universal Church.

As we draw closer to Christmas, avail yourself of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please see this bulletin (Page 7) for the schedule of confessions. What better way to prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus!

In Jesus, our long-expected Savior, Fr. Bob

Christmas Dinner 2024

On December 5th, our Rosarians celebrated the beginning of the Advent season at our annual Christmas fundraiser, held at Strathmore Vanderbilt Country Club. We had a terrifc turnout with over 140 people in attendance. Te evening was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. Tis joyous event included a handful of pop up boutiques and an array of rafe baskets. All basket items were generously donated by our Rosarians, local businesses, and vendors in attendance. A heartfelt thank you to all who donated time, talent, sponsorships, and rafe items. A special thank you to the many parishioners who, though not Rosarians, contributed in support of our mission. So many people had a hand in making this event, our only fundraiser of the year, such a success. Funds raised enable us to continue to support our charitable causes throughout the parish, especially scholarships to the Schools of St. Mary.

Our Daughters of Mary came out in full force along with their moms and their moderators. It was great to see such a wonderful turnout. Tank you to their families for planting the seeds of faith and their moderators for cultivating those seeds. Te growth of this group is the direct result of the dedication of the girls and their moderators: Cathy Morrissey, Erin McNamara, Laura Sciametta, Sister Agnes Maria (ES) and Sister Mary Aquinas (HS).

Te Rosarians were treated to a special rendition of Christmas songs by the parish Adult Choir under the direction of Daniel Maimone. Tey are such a talented group and we appreciate the group sharing the gift of music with us.

Lastly, thank you to all who participated in the Champions for Charity on behalf of the Rosary Society and the Schools of St. Mary this season. Twenty-fve percent of your pretax purchase will be donated back to us by the Americana.

Te Rosary Society board of St. Mary wishes each member, our Daughters of Mary, every parishioner and their family a joyous Advent season and a blessed Christmas.

May we remember to keep Christ in Christmas.

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

Shares Top 100 Basketball Players List

Last week, Newsday released its annual look at the top Long Island basketball players heading into the 2024-2025 winter season. With an impressive list for both boys and girls that each included 100 players from private and public schools, Saint Mary’s High School gave readers the good old double take that grabbed their attention. Myles Herbert ’26 garnered attention as a standout on the boy’s list published earlier in the week; then, with a squad of ten players coached by Kevin White, seven of our female student-athletes were listed in Newsday’s revered High School Sports pull-out section this past Sunday. Also included in the issue was a feature story on the girl’s varsity team, shown on the opposite page courtesy of Newsday and reporter Owen O’Brien with photography by Dawn McCormick.

LAILA CARR, 5-7, G, Jr.: Carr is a knockdown shooter both in the midrange and beyond the arc. She averaged 10.6 points at Half Hollow Hills West as a freshman before transferring to St. Mary’s.

SCARLET CUBERO, 5-8, G, Jr.: Her strong dribbling skills set her apart, and she uses it to create space. Cubero attacks the basket and averaged four assists.

SOFIA KAMMAS, 5-9, G, Sr.: The Adelphi commit averaged six points and four rebounds.

SKY PRIESTER, 5-6, G, Sr.: She averaged six points and five assists as a key facilitator. Priester also is a tough defender.

DESTINY ROBINSON, 6-1, F, Jr.: Robinson averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds and blocked 51 shots. She already holds offers from Syracuse and Hofstra.

KAYLA SOLOMON, 5-8, G, Jr.: Solomon was a key piece to St. Mary’s state championship team her freshman season and averaged eight points as a sophomore. She averaged 17.9 points as an eighth-grader at Central Islip before transferring to St. Mary’s.

TIANA THOMPSON, 5-8, G, Jr.: She is strong on the dribble and attacks the basket. Thompson averaged seven points and three assists. – Newsday

Way to go, Gaels! We’re looking forward to a fantastic season for both teams!

In today’s Gospel John the Baptist says, “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise…” Christmas is a time of love and gift giving…please share your abundance by giving a gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that those who do not have clothes and food can share in the blessings of Christmas.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Tank you for your continued support.

Advent Prayer

Lord Jesus,

Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.

We who have so much to do and seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day, We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.

We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.

We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.

We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.

To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus!’ Amen.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, eforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.

We come from diferent places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
