From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“Stand

before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:36)

As we begin another Advent, the days of preparation for Christmas sometimes cause this season to fade into the background. I dare say we all begin with good intentions, but, as the days move forward, the rush and scramble of the Christmas season take hold of us. So I encourage you to be aware of these days of preparation and enter into the prayer and self–refection that the Advent Season invites us. Te Gospel reminds us that the day of the Lord is coming in a cloud of power with great glory.

For us to be ready for that day, we need to prepare ourselves by living in prayer to the Lord. Tis attitude of prayer is one that invites us to enter into the silence of the Lord. Tere in the silence of our hearts is the place that God whispers His song of love to us. When we hear that gentle voice, we are reminded how much we are loved. In knowing we are the object of love of the BELOVED, we then want to rid ourselves of all that keeps the path of our hearts closed to God’s presence. St. Paul reminds us that the presence of Jesus in our lives challenges us to “love one another.”

Tat journey of being loving people is one that must be rooted in our faith in Jesus. We don’t just forgive for the sake of forgiving; we do so because it is commanded of us AND it is the life that Jesus embraced. In following Him, we know we are becoming closer to and more like the Jesus we worship. If we have separated ourselves from God or do not act in His name, we can be tempted in ways that are contrary to His plan for us. St. Luke gives us examples of lifestyles that we should avoid. Jesus tells us to be careful and cautious or else we can fall into the ways of the world to such a degree that the day of the Lord will “be sprung upon you suddenly like a trap.” To avoid this we are told that prayer will keep us centered; prayer around the Word. Knowing the Word we know the ways of God.

Advent is our preparation for the coming of the Messiah, the Christ, the Word made fesh. Tat Word is the utterance of the Father to us and is recalled and proclaimed in our Scriptures. So Sacred Scripture, for us as Catholics, is held in our highest regard

Te Eucharist we celebrate is the greatest of ways to keep us open to the power of Jesus. It is His very Body and Blood that will nourish and change us, if we are open. Let this Advent Season keep us open to all that God wants to do to and for us through Jesus Christ. For that openness to happen, we must want it and, in wanting it, we must be ready to work for it! I implore you in name of Jesus not to let these days of preparation go by without letting God change you more into His likeness. Pray, pray, and pray some more. God wants so much to speak to your heart. Let Him!

In Jesus, our long expected Savior, Fr. Bob

J Stewards of God’s Gifts

In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus tell us about coming tribulations and His Second Coming.

Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Formation: As we begin our journey through Advent, we are called to prepare ourselves appropriately for the coming of Christ. Tis is a great time to go to confession, especially if you haven’t been to confession in a while.

A New Ministry at St. Mary’s: GARDEN CLUB

As many parishioners know, our now-retired Facilities Manager, Vincent Hartley, established and maintained the beautiful seasonal plantings and outdoor decor around our church buildings. Fr. Bob would now like to start a Garden Club to offer parishioners with “green thumbs” the opportunity to select, organize, plant, and maintain garden areas around the church. If you are interested, please contact our Director of Operations, Rob Cammarata, at 516-627-0385, ext 1037 or email him at rcammarata@stmary.ws A BOX IS LOCATED IN THE SOUTH VESTIBULE FOR YOUR USED CRAYON DONATIONS

Help millions of pounds of crayons from clogging our landfills with a waxy sludge. With your help, the Crayon Initiative is remanufacturing unwanted crayons into new, free crayons for kids in children’s hospitals across the United States. Being larger and three-sided, they are easier for children to grip, and they won’t roll off the hospital trays. Here on Long Island, the crayons are being sent to The Children’s Medical Center at NYU Langone Hospital, Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, and St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children.

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

Our 2-year-olds in the St. Mary’s Cherubs Program are remarkably demonstrating their independence. Whether accompanied by a parent, grandparent, or caregiver, the children are so focused and selfassured that you'd hardly notice the adult's presence. They dive into activities with their teacher in their bright and cheery classroom, from story time and playtime to crafts and socializing. These angelic toddlers are truly making the most of their time with us. Watching them explore, learn, and grow is an amazing time. Their curiosity and confidence will inspire you!

Families with toddlers, we invite you to witness the magic of our Cherubs' growth and development. Please call our Elementary School Main Office at 516-627-0184 to schedule a private tour and experience the joy of seeing your child's potential unfold!

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Adoration and Contrition to Our God and King

Take a moment and refect on God’s presence in your life. Tink of three things that You are grateful to Him for and begin to praise Him:

Glorious Father, please let Your ears always be attentive to our prayers. Holy Spirit, continue to teach us how to love You, Jesus, our Brother, and our Father, God. Please touch the hearts of those who do not adore the Lord, and help them to love Him with all their hearts, souls, and strength. Please remind each of us of the many things that God does for us daily and help us to spend more time in praise and adoration. Help us to be a thankful congregation who refects the glory of God by the way we live our lives. Holy Spirit, help us to always be mindful of Your presence in our daily lives and help us to be quick to respond when You quicken us to action.

Forgiving Father, forgive us as a Church Family for sins of pride, rebellion, disobedience, selfshness, hatred, and idolatry. Lord, forgive us for half-hearted worship. Forgive us for disrespecting Your Name and treating You irreverently. Forgive those who choose to not bless and honor You during Your feasts, which are Your special times of celebration. Forgive those of us who are parents for not teaching our children to revere and adore You. Lord Jesus, forgive those who take Your sacrifce for granted. Holy Spirit, forgive those who do not acknowledge You or Your presence in their daily lives. Lord, forgive me for (list any sins that you have committed). Holy Spirit, remind us all of those we need to forgive and help us to be quick to forgive. As for me, Holy Spirit, bring to my remembrance those I need to forgive.

Omnipotent Father, help us to not yield to temptation; but deliver us from the evil one. Praise the Lord, for the Lord, our God, the Almighty, reigns. Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God, the Almighty. Just and true are Your ways, O King of the nations. Who will not fear You and glorify Your Name? You alone are holy! All nations will come and worship before You, for Your righteous deeds have been revealed. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Good Samaritan House Announces Winter Bereavement Group

A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on January 30, 2025.

The session will run for eight consecutive weeks on Thursdays from 1:30-3:00P M. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.

The group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, child, or sibling – including non-parishioners and people of other faiths. It should be noted though, St. Mary's bereavement sessions are faith based sessions that at times refer to bible verses or prayers to assist in the healing process.
