From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“He will stand frm and feed His fock.” (Micah 5:3)

In the Old Testament, the Prophet Micah ofers the people of Israel hope in their time of need. Tis hope is envisioned in the coming of the Messiah. Tis Savior will be one who shepherds the people of Israel. He will shepherd, not as others have for their own gain or in their own words, but as the Scriptures tell us, “He will feed His fock with the power of the Lord.” Te Messiah will be the One who speaks and acts in the very name of God. As one who comes in God’s name, He will bear with Himself great peace. Tis peace comes when those who hear His words listen and obey. St. Paul goes on to tell us that those who follow Him do more than simply ofer sacrifces or obey the law, but rather embrace the will of God. When we have willingly taken on obedience to God, then His peace can be a reality in our lives.

Tis is seen in the beautiful recounting of the Visitation. Here is Our Lady who just encountered an angel with a message...and has forever enshrined for us the living out of obedience to the will of God...now she teaches us again. In her own condition and with all she herself has to deal with, Mary doesn’t remain self-absorbed. Her vision is one that “Feeds the Flock” of those in need. Her kinswoman, Elizabeth, is also pregnant and advanced in age. So Mary puts aside her own needs and goes to minister and support her cousin. What a lesson Mary teaches us in this Advent Season! With all the materialism, consumerism, and mindset that calls us to fulfll our own needs, this story stands in stark contrast to much of what this season has become in our world. Mary reminds us that when we choose to live in obedience to God, it opens our hearts to live out that love by how we love one another. Like Mary, our Mother, we should be open to the Spirit of God so that, like her, our lives may be a song sung to the glory of God. Look to her in these last few days before Christmas and learn from her “Yes” to God. Tis is surely one of the steps to fnd that peace that is promised through the prophet Micah.

As we prepare for the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord, why not invite someone who has been away from Church or Mass to celebrate Christmas Mass with you? What a great Christmas gift you can be to them...and what a blessing it would be for you.

I encourage you to take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation to prepare yourselves for the Holy Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord. Please see this bulletin (page 7) for the times of confession and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses.

In this season of thanks, I want to express my deep gratitude to the people of St. Mary’s. So many people give so freely of themselves to make this the wonderful parish that it is. Tose who work to deepen the spirituality, the many who work in faith formation of our adults and children; the prayerful and joyful liturgies; those who work behind the scenes to beautify our complex; those who serve the needs of the poor; the social events that bring us together; those involved in fundraising, social media, ofce staf and the overwhelming generosity of our parishioners and, of course, our wonderful parish staf who each day help me to serve YOU. To all, thank you for making the ministry of being your pastor the joy that it is for me.

On behalf of myself, the priests, the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, and the entire parish staf, we wish you and your families a very blessed and joyful Christmas.

In Jesus, our New Born King, Fr. Bob

Cheerful Catholic Academic Prayer

and Fellowship Shared on the Solemnity of the Immaculate

Conception

In celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary on December 9, 2024, the Saint Mary’s High School community spent the Solemnity focusing on a prayerful and eventful day as Catholics with a Marian devotion.

Mr. Brieg Bevilacque, the school’s campus minister, carefully planned the Day of Recollection, which began with breakfast during homeroom. The community made their way to gather in the Br. Kenneth Robert Gymnasium, where Mr. Bevilacque welcomed them. They started the program with an Advent prayer and introduction to the significance of the feast day.

Four students, juniors Elizabeth Agbata, Nicholas Montes, William Cuneo, and Rafael Arias, were called to the center of the gym to share how the Virgin Mary has influenced their lives through experiences they encountered along their journeys. Miss Agbata said, “She inspires me to be very patient with the people in my life. Mary allowed herself to be the handmaid of the Lord; she let God take control over her life. This inspires me to allow myself to be an instrument of the mission of the kingdom of God and to let God’s will be the only will I follow in my life. Mary inspires me to trust God with my whole heart even when I feel uncertain because, ultimately, God knows everything, and I only have a limited view of my life, let alone the world.”

Their powerful testimonies on how Our Lady has impacted their lives were a testament to their faith and the school’s values. They also assisted with the Lighting of the Advent Wreath, demonstrating their active participation in the day’s events.

At 10:00 AM, administrators, faculty, and students attended Mass in the Church of Saint Mary. Miss Grace DiFonzo, Miss Divine Awoleke, and Mr. Rocco Calo, who are Seniors were lectors, contributing to the sense of community and shared responsibility. The warm and welcoming atmosphere was fostered by Seniors, Mr. Ryan Werner, Mr. Vincenzo Bivona, Miss Tessa Carrano, and Miss N’kayla Washington who greeted the community at the entrances to the Church. After the Eucharistic celebration, everyone returned to Marist Hall for a presentation on the Jesse Tree facilitated by Juniors Miss Saoirse McNamara and Miss Caterina Bootsma, which included brilliant and wellarticulated facts about the significance of the wonderful tradition, further enhancing the sense of shared knowledge and understanding.

The day concluded with a fun and engaging competition with Marian Trivia between the Blue and White Teams. The competition featured challenging questions about the Virgin Mary, her life, and her significance in the Catholic faith. It provided an excellent opportunity for the students to learn more about their faith and Mary. Both teams showed their skills, and seeing them engage in this learning experience was a joy, highlighting the educational aspect of the event and the students' active participation.

Mr. Bevilacque shared, “I was very impressed with the school and faculty coming together on a sacred day. Witnessing how God’s Providence made the day go by smoothly was beautiful, especially because it was my first coordinated Day of Recollection at the school. I am grateful for the kindness shown to me by the faculty and students, and I am really happy to be the Campus Minister here at St. Mary’s.”

He added, “I look forward to working with the students and faculty for the next day of recollection.” Overall, the opportunity to grow in prayer and fellowship was well received by the students, who also experienced the joy of dedicating their lives to Our Lady.

Students Share their Hearts and Joy with Toys for Christmas

Our Saint Mary’s Elementary and Middle Schools proudly participated in the annual Society of St. Vincent de Paul Toy Drive. As always, our St. Mary’s family rose to the occasion, donating many toys that will bring joy to hundreds of needy children on Long Island this Christmas season! We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to the drive, and we extend special thanks to the 4thgrade students. Their enthusiasm and hard work in helping to load the truck and spread holiday cheer were truly inspiring. In the words of St. Francis of Assisi, “It is giving that we receive,” and this collective effort was a wonderful experience for our students to put their faith into action demonstrating our Catholic values of giving this Christmas as we wait in joyful anticipation of the birth of Jesus!

Murillo’s Adoration of the Shepherds: A Masterpiece of Baroque Art

Mr. Frank De Rosa

Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Bourguet

Mr. & Mrs. Frank J. Martorana

Painted by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo around 1650, the Adoration of the Shepherds is one of the most famous works of Spanish Baroque art. Today, it is displayed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, where visitors admire Murillo’s ability to bring together religious devotion and lifelike details.

Mr. & Mrs. Aldo P. Ardito

Mr. & Mrs. Michael D. Morici

Mr. & Mrs. Anthony Diproperzio

Mr. & Mrs. Pierenzo Calosso

Mr. & Mrs. Joseph B. Born

Mrs. Joyce Spincola

Ms. Marilyn Salierno

Te painting shows the scene of the shepherds paying homage to baby Jesus shortly after his birth. At the center, the Christ Child glows with a soft, heavenly light, lighting up the faces of Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds around him. Murillo uses light and shadow (a technique called chiaroscuro) to make the scene feel full of depth and emotion. Tis style pulls the viewer into a peaceful and loving moment.

Mr. & Mrs. Frank Martino

Dr. & Mrs. Che-Meng Chang

Murillo’s depiction of the shepherds is also particularly noteworthy. Teir worn clothes and rugged faces make it clear that they are ordinary people. Tis detail contrasts with the graceful, divine appearance of the Holy Family, reminding us that Jesus’ message is for everyone, no matter their background.

Murillo’s use of color is another standout feature. Te soft, glowing tones add to the peacefulness of the scene, while

his detailed brushstrokes make everything—from the folds of fabric to the animals in the stable—feel real and alive.

Tis painting is still celebrated today because it combines spiritual meaning with human warmth. By showing both the holiness of the moment and the everyday people who witness it, Murillo captures the true heart of the Nativity story.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.

Our lives, time, eforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.

We come from diferent places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.

Good Samaritan House Announces Winter Bereavement Group

A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on January 30, 2025.

The session will run for eight consecutive weeks on Thursdays from 1:30-3:00P M. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.

The group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, child, or sibling – including non-parishioners and people of other faiths. It should be noted though, St. Mary's bereavement sessions are faith based sessions that at times refer to bible verses or prayers to assist in the healing process.
