From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“Prepare the way of the Lord.” (Luke 3:4)

In today’s Gospel, St. John the Baptist echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah. Te people of the Old Testament waited in longing for the promised Messiah. He would be the one who would proclaim and BE the presence of God in their midst. For this Messiah to come, the people were called to a deep and abiding repentance. Te images of the valleys being flled in and the mountains made low were a metaphor for the people of Israel themselves. For them and for us, in this holy season of Advent, we are called to prepare for the coming of the Lord. St. Peter (2 Peter 3:8) reminds us that, though time for God is diferent than it is for us, we must still search and wait for that Second Coming. Te waiting is not a passive waiting, but an active call.

So again we turn to the image of the mountains and valleys. Te path that is separated by a mountain range or a deep valley makes travel difcult at the best and impossible at the worst. We are reminded that anything that hinders an open heart to God must be changed. So the road to our heart needs to be straight for the Lord to enter. We need to heed the call of St. John the Baptist so we can be converted. St. Paul tells us that Jesus “wants no one to be lost.” In order for us to be counted among the saved, we need to profess that Jesus is truly Lord of our lives. When we confess the lordship of Jesus, it then demands a response on our part. Tese weeks of Advent are the “wake up” call for each of us to take stock of who we are.

St. Peter goes on to remind us that in order to be saved, we also have to “change our ways” to straighten the paths that the Lord uses to enter our lives. I am sure most of us are aware of those areas that need the healing touch of Jesus. Tose times when we act contrary to the Gospel which keep the mountainous path to our hearts so high that Jesus’ light and voice cannot “get through.” Are the teachings of Jesus important enough that we want to incorporate them in our everyday experiences? Are we as loving, forgiving, and merciful as we can be? Do our words and actions about and to others refect a deep-seated respect and concern for them? What are the mountains that keep the Lord out? What valleys make the pathway to your heart a difcult journey? Make the days of Advent count...PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD!

One of the best ways to prepare is to take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession). Tis beautiful Sacrament frees us from the bonds of sin and re-focuses us for the journey ahead. Do not let fear or pride keep you from hearing Jesus’ loving words of forgiveness. Please see the bulletin starting next week and the packet sent to your home that list the many opportunities for Confession during this Advent season.

A reminder that the Giving Tree is in the south vestibule. Please take an ornament to purchase a present for those in need.

Te Gift Shop is open each Sunday. Please take a look at some of the beautiful religious objects that are ofered for sale.

Today (Sunday) we will pray Solemn Vespers at 3:00 PM in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Under this title of Mary as the Patroness of the United States, we will honor her and pray for our nation. It will be a beautiful and prayerful experience and I invite all to attend.

In Jesus, the long-expected Savior, Fr. Bob

Tursday, December 12th - Te Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas

Tis feast dates back to the 16th century. Chronicles of that period tell us the story. A poor Indian named Cuauhtlatohuac was baptized and given the name Juan Diego. He was a 57-year-old widower, and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On Saturday morning, December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady.

Juan was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared, and within it stood an Indian maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. Te lady spoke to him in his own language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. Te bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared.

Eventually the bishop told Juan to have the lady give him a sign. About this same time, Juan’s uncle became seriously ill. Tis led poor Juan to try to avoid the lady. Nevertheless, the lady found Juan, assured him that his uncle would recover, and provided roses for Juan to carry to the bishop in his cape or tilma.

On December 12th, when Juan Diego opened his tilma in the bishop’s presence, the roses fell to the ground, and the bishop sank to his knees. On the tilma where the roses had been, appeared an image of Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac.

A Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe:

Dear Mary, we love you. We thank you for your promise to help us in our need. We trust in your love that dries our tears and comforts us. Teach us to fnd our peace in your son, Jesus, and bless us every day of our lives. Help us to build a shrine in our hearts. Make it as beautiful as the one built for you on the mount of Tepeyac. A shrine full of trust, hope, and love of Jesus growing stronger each day. Mary, you have chosen to remain with us by giving us your most wonderful and holy self-image on Juan Diego’s cloak. May we feel your loving presence as we look upon your face. Like Juan, give us the courage to bring your message of hope to everyone. You are our mother and our inspiration. Hear our prayers and answer us. Amen.

Cheerful Catholic Academic Giving Days Bring Special Meaning to Students

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

For more than 20 years, Saint Mary’s Elementary School has organized student Giving Days during the Thanksgiving holiday season. This initiative unites the entire school community in a shared mission to collect food for those in need, a reflection of our core values of compassion and service. Our partnership with the Little Sisters of the Poor, who manage the Queen of Peace Residence in Jamaica, Queens, is a testament to our shared commitment to serving others and enhances the impact of our efforts.

The Little Sisters of the Poor is an international congregation of Roman Catholic women religious founded in 1839 by Saint Jeanne Jugan. They dedicate themselves to serving the impoverished, primarily the elderly, in over 30 countries worldwide. One of their core vows, Hospitality: Service to the Elderly, drives them to devote themselves entirely to caring for elderly individuals in need. This commitment is evident in their work with the residents at Queen of Peace, where they attend to their needs day and night, treating each individual with dignity, spirituality, and compassion as if they were family until they are called home to God.

As we mark another year of Giving Days, let us draw inspiration from the collective efforts of the St. Mary’s family. Our combined actions, no matter how small, contribute to a greater good and help us become the best versions of ourselves. Let us heed Christ’s message by extending our grateful hearts and blessings to those less fortunate in our neighboring communities. We are honored to be able to provide food and necessities to the residents of the Queen of Peace Residence. May God continue to bless the Little Sisters of the Poor for their unwavering dedication to their mission.

Tis time of Advent calls us to spiritually prepare for the coming of Christ. God’s people contemplate the Light of the Son breaking into a darkened world for the redemption of souls. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men (John 1:4). Students in all grades are especially contemplating Advent’s time of waiting and wonder. Mrs. Toth’s grade one students made their own special wreath with candles. Catechists Megan Fox and Emma Dessi centered their class on the blessed one who stood before the angel and spoke her fat – Mary, the Mother of God.

On December 17th, Mrs. Brown’s third grade class will perform a special Christmas play. Tey have been working very hard to reenact the blessed Nativity story. Te performance take place inside the church during class time. We are so grateful for Mrs. Brown’s wonderful eforts, parents, student choir, and all the helpers making this beautiful event possible. Tank you one and all!

And thank you, Fr. Rafal, for your time given to visit Monday evening classes. We are so grateful for you and all our parish priests.

Advent’s blessings, Mrs. Granieri

Help millions of pounds of crayons from clogging our landfills with a waxy sludge. With your help, the Crayon Initiative is remanufacturing unwanted crayons into new, free crayons for kids in children’s hospitals across the United States. Being larger and three-sided, they are easier for children to grip, and they won’t roll off the hospital trays. Here on Long Island, the crayons are being sent to The Children’s Medical Center at NYU Langone Hospital, Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, and St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children.
