From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“Do everything for the Glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31) What wonderful words these are to live by! How wonderful our world would be if more and more people could embrace this mantra of life. But what does it mean to give glory to God in all things? Maybe these are some practical ways to put flesh on St. Paul’s invitation to give glory to God in our daily lives. St. Paul tells us in his letter to the Colossians to surround ourselves with songs of praise and worship to God. When our hearts and lips continually offer those hymns of praise, it lifts up our spirits. It has the ability for us to experience the presence of God. It may even raise us above any difficult situation so we can know we are not alone. Serving others and placing them first offers us an opportunity to see as Jesus does. His concern in today’s Gospel was for the curing of the leper. He knew that this disease separated the man from the community. It forced him to live a life of loneliness and exile. The reaching out of Jesus, even before the cure, I am sure that man was comforted by Jesus. He was acknowledged as a human being and not as a shunned entity. Each time we reach out to any person in need we help to restore their human dignity; we restore their sense of worth. How often can we consciously or unconsciously find ourselves reacting in a negative way to the “lepers” in our midst, like those who contracted the COVID-19 virus? Not that we take unnecessary risks or put ourselves in danger, but we might have an attitude that reveals a judgment upon them. Like anyone in need, they require the love of Christians. This service might just mean a phone call, or a note expressing a prayer for a speedy recovery. Doesn’t this serve as a reminder that people are still part of a loving community? Share the Gospel of Jesus. Talk about your faith and what it has done for your life. Not in a threating or controlling manner, but with a gentle reminder for all that God has done. In these days of secularization, we may become leery or fearful to speak about faith. I can assure you people need to hear it. We shouldn’t place our faith in such a box that it never sees the light of day. All people, most especially the young, need to hear and experience through us that faith is important to our daily lives. We may, by our words and witness, bring others to a deeper relationship with Jesus. Hearing our own story out loud may even concretize and deepen it for their own lives. God has given each of us a purpose in this life. Our journey should be to discover what that path is. When we find the purpose that God has for us, then we can act in His will. This is meant to bring peace and joy to our lives. God wants only the best for us. So this path of discovery and discernment should be ongoing and, yes, even daily. We think, erroneously, that when we become settled in our life; e.g. adults, that the discernment of our purpose is completed. Not so! God calls us in every age and moment to deepen the purpose He offers us. In the daily reflection and examination of conscience the question of where God wants us to grow and move should be paramount. The true purpose of our lives, which serves God, keeps us on His path. In daily life, stay connected to Jesus. Silent prayer (that personal conversation with Jesus), daily reflection on the Sacred Scriptures, and Mass give us wonderful opportunities to remain in Jesus. When we have put Jesus in such a prominent place in our lives, it can make us more aware of His presence within us. This daily presence then has the ability to make us respond more deeply as believing Catholic Christians. In my mind, probably the most import way to serve God is to have the eyes that see these and other opportunities to be the healing and joyful presence of the Lord in our world. God puts people in our lives and puts us equally in the path of each other so that we, as His beloved people, may have the opportunity to be His instruments of not only giving but also of receiving His peace in a world that can seem so consumed with darkness. Those moments are there…we just need the eyes to see, the ears to hear, and a heart that feels! So let us continue to serve God in all things even if we may think of them as small and “insignificant.” If done for Him, we then truly ”do them for the glory of God!” This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Great and Holy Season of Lent. Please see this bulletin for the regulations for fast and abstinence. I encourage you to pray the ancient prayer form of the Stations of the Cross each Friday in Lent here at St. Mary’s at 7:00 PM in the church. In Jesus, Fr. Bob

Spirits Soar During Catholic Schools Week at Saint Mary’s Elementary & Middle Schools When you think the school spirit is already fantastic at Saint Mary’s Elementary and Middle Schools– along comes Catholic Schools Week! With the weeklong activities and lessons around this year’s theme, “Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community,” the school spirit soars to incredible levels when the entire community joins in celebrating this annual national event. Elementary and Middle School Principal Theresa Kemp noted, “This week is a beautiful reminder that we are part of a larger family, as Catholic schools in our local area and across the nation plan for this yearly event. Our daily focus at St. Mary’s revolves around educating the whole child through the Gospel teachings of Jesus while we grow in faith. So, the energy and spirit soar beyond compare when we focus on creative, faith-filled lessons, activities, and community service in one concentrated week.”

The week began with the celebration of the Eucharist on Sunday, January 28, 2024, when families attended Mass at the Church of St. Mary, followed by the Open House for Admissions. The St. Mary’s community welcomed prospective families to campus for tours and informational sessions on the academic and extracurricular offerings. Events during the week included a school-wide religious concept LEGO competition; Buddy Day, which paired older students with younger learners for a class lesson; a S(o)uper Bowl canned soup drive; 8th grade vs faculty volleyball game; school-wide Escape Room, Nursery-Pre-K Dance Off, and a beautiful Eucharistic Procession with Adoration led by the School Chaplain, Fr. Dominik. The week concluded as it began with Mass in the Church of St. Mary, as the entire student body and family members attended First Friday Mass celebrated by Fr. Bob. Thank you to the entire faculty, staff, clergy, and parents for their boundless energy in making Catholic Schools Week 2024 so memorable for our community. Each of you plays a critical role in our children’s success – and your spirit is truly uplifting!

Sunday, February 11th - Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes The Story of Our Lady of Lourdes On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in the apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus. A little more than three years later, on February 11, 1858, a young lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous. This began a series of visions. During the apparition on March 25th, the lady identified herself with the words: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Bernadette was a sickly child of poor parents. Their practice of the Catholic faith was scarcely more than lukewarm. Bernadette could pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Creed. She also knew the prayer of the Miraculous Medal: “O Mary conceived without sin.” During interrogations Bernadette gave an account of what she saw. It was “something white in the shape of a girl.” She used the word aquero, a dialect term meaning “this thing.” It was “a pretty young girl with a rosary over her arm.” Her white robe was encircled by a blue girdle. She wore a white veil. There was a yellow rose on each foot. A rosary was in her hand. Bernadette was also impressed by the fact that the lady did not use the informal form of address (tu), but the polite form (vous). The humble virgin appeared to a humble girl and treated her with dignity. Through that humble girl, Mary revitalized and continues to revitalize the faith of millions of people. People began to flock to Lourdes from other parts of France and from all over the world. In 1862, Church authorities confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions and authorized the cult of Our Lady of Lourdes for the diocese. The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes became worldwide in 1907. Lourdes has become a place of pilgrimage and healing, but even more of faith. Church authorities have recognized over sixty miraculous cures, although there have probably been many more. To people of faith, this is not surprising. It is a continuation of Jesus’ healing miracles—now performed at the intercession of his mother. Some would say that the greater miracles are hidden. Many who visit Lourdes return home with renewed faith and a readiness to serve God in their needy brothers and sisters.

World Day of the Sick St Pope John Paul began the observance of the World Day of the Sick in 1992 to encourage people to pray for the ill, as well as their caregivers. He chose February 11th because it coincides with the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes. Lourdes has been a pilgrimage site for healing for over a century.

Rosary Society Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes O ever Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, Health of the Sick, Refuge of Sinners, Comfort to the Afflicted, you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings. Deign to cast upon me a look of mercy. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, you were pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary, whence you dispense your favors; and already many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal. I come, therefore, with the most unbounded confidence to implore your maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the granting of my requests. Through gratitude for favors, I will endeavor to imitate your virtues that I may one day share your glory. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. Amen. (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

1 Corinthians 10:31-33: “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God-even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.” As St. Paul says, Do it all for the glory of God. God also wants us to seek the good of our spouse. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Adoration–Spending Time in Prayer with the Blessed Sacrament In Matthew 28:20, Jesus tells us “I will be with you always.” This is certainly true in the Eucharist and one of the reasons why many Catholics pray in Adoration. The practice of Adoration dates back to the early Church but surged in popularity during the Middle Ages. It remains an important part of the prayer life of millions of Catholics. The USCCB considers adoration “the natural consequence of the Eucharistic celebration.” For Eucharistic Adoration, the Eucharist is sometimes displayed in a monstrance, a metal stand that resembles a sunburst that holds a consecrated host. Other times, it is kept in a ciborium (the dish from which hosts are distributed during Holy Communion) inside of a tabernacle. A candle signals the presence of Jesus. Either way, that concept is the same: Being physically present with Jesus, who is physically present with us in the Eucharist. Churches that offer perpetual Adoration often have volunteers sign up for one-hour time slots so that someone is always present to adore Jesus.

Prayers to Say During Adoration There is no exact “right” prayer (or way to pray) during Adoration. Fr. Josh of Ascension Press explains that Adoration is about imitating God: “We want to imitate our Savior, Jesus Christ. Any time we spend time with people, we become more like the people we hang out with,” he said. “The more we spend time with Jesus, the more we’re going to be like Jesus.” Consider that as a starting point: Merely being with Christ in the Eucharist helps us draw closer to Him, regardless of the prayers we offer. Still, Adoration can be a powerful opportunity for transformative prayer. Adoration can involve any of the following prayers or meditations: Holy Hour, Praying the Rosary, Lectio Divina

You can also say this prayer from St. Alphonsus Liguori: My Lord Jesus Christ, it is Your great love for us that keeps You day and night present in the Blessed Sacrament, full of compassion and love, waiting for us to visit You. I believe that You are really present in the Sacrament of the Altar. From the depth of my heart, I adore You and I thank You for the many graces You have given me, especially for the gift of Yourself in this Sacrament, for the gift of Your most holy Mother as my Mother and for the privilege of visiting You in this church at this time. My Jesus, I love You with all my heart. I am sorry for my ingratitude and I now resolve, with the help of Your grace, never to offend You again. I consecrate my entire self to You, my thoughts, my feelings, and all that I have. From now on, do whatever You want with me. All I ask for is Your love and strength to do Your Holy Will. Amen.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Closing Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 8:00 PM in the Church Please note the extension of Adoration to 8:00 PM for the weeks of Lent. Confession is also available on Mondays from 7:00 to 7:45 PM during Lent.
