From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the Good News.” (Mark 1:15) This past Wednesday the Church began the great and holy forty days of Lent. On Ash Wednesday, we were reminded that it is not our external signs that are important to God, but rather that we give to Him our hearts and lives. Lent is the season that reminds us to look into our hearts and become aware of those areas and moments that are not given over to God. All the external activities of Lent, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, are important only if they bring us closer to God. The Gospel today reminds us that the time is here and now, the Kingdom of God is present, and we need to live more deeply the Good News that Jesus has come to reveal to us. That joy is expressed not only in the external signs of this season (prayer, fasting, and almsgiving) but, as Pope Francis reminds us, in being joyful bearers of the message of hope and salvation that Jesus brings to us. As joyful bearers, we become the light to the world. Forty days may seem like a long time, but, as we know, if we are not aware then the time can slip by without it changing us. The point of this season is to make us stop and become more aware of the presence of Jesus in our lives. When we welcome Jesus, then it stands to reason that His words will take root in our lives. When the Word becomes part of who we are, then it makes us more conscious of those areas that need the transforming power of Jesus. If we can begin this journey, then Lent has done its job for us. But it takes our willingness to open the eyes of our hearts and, through the power of the Holy Spirit, the sins that block our vision may be removed. I encourage you to consider daily Mass if you can, praying with your family, giving to the poor, to a fast that changes your heart. AND most importantly, to come to the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) to hear the words of freedom that Jesus offers as He forgives our sins. The readings for each day of the coming week are included in the weekly email we send to you. A wonderful practice, if you cannot attend daily Mass, may be to use those readings as a source of prayer and meditation. The readings for daily Mass will focus on Lenten themes that can be a great beginning point of our Lenten journey. Using those readings will also keep us connected to the Universal Church. An ancient and traditional practice in Lent is praying of the Stations of the Cross. This “walking” of the Via Dolorosa (or Way of Sorrows) commemorate the last hours of the life of our Savior Jesus. They are prayed each Friday in the Church at 7:00 PM. And as the light to the world, let us also use this Lent to encourage others to a return to the faith…maybe invite someone who has been alienated from the Church to come home to the Sacraments. What a great gift to God and certainly for them. Let our journey of Lent, this desert experience of ours, lead us to a more joyful celebration of the Feast of the Resurrection on Easter morning. In Jesus, our Suffering Lord, Fr. Bob

Lent 2024 …We need our prayer to rise with greater insistence to the Father, So that He may hear the voice of those who turn to Him on the confidence of being answered… Pope Francis
Dear Sisters and Brothers, On Sunday, January 21 of this year, Pope Francis inaugurated a Year of Prayer ahead of the 2025 Jubilee Year. The Holy Father is calling on the faithful “to pray more fervently to prepare ourselves to live properly this grace-filled event and to experience the power of hope in God.” This Year of Prayer, the Holy Father explained, is dedicated “to rediscovering the great value and absolute need for prayer, prayer in personal life, in the life of the Church, prayer in the world.” In response to the Holy Father’s initiative, together with Bishop Barres, all the Bishops and I would like to encourage you, especially during this 2024 Season of Lent in particular, to focus on prayer. Traditionally, during this time all Christians are called to practice fasting, prayer, repentance, and almsgiving as a way of drawing us closer to God and reflecting on the meaning of Jesus' death and resurrection in anticipation of the gift of new life at Easter. All pillars of Lent complement and support each other. Customarily, fasting is a way of disciplining ourselves and expressing our repentance for our sins. By abstaining from certain foods or activities, we show our love for God and our gratitude for His mercy. Fasting also helps us to empathize with those who are less fortunate and to share our resources with them. In fact, prayer binds all these Lenten practices all together, giving them an extra strength and direction. In days to come, as we prepare for the celebration of Easter, let us take this great opportunity to renew ourselves in the life of prayer, making it not just a duty or an obligation but also as a privilege and a joy. Prayer is a gift from God, connecting us with Him and allowing us to experience His love in our lives. It is a ground for an authentic encounter which God uses to transform us and to make us more like Christ to one another. It is also a power that God grants us to overcome sin and evil and to advance His cause in the world, especially very much needed peace as we reflect these days on the situations in Ukraine, the Holy Land, Syria, Congo, and many other troubled places. Personal Prayer. A classic description says that prayer is “the raising of our mind and heart to God.” We all might have our own experiences of prayer, and we can define prayer in our own and unique ways. However, most important is the fact that during sacred time of the year each of us should make the best effort to make a time for prayer, short or longer, in our daily lives. There are many ways in which we can engage with it during Lent. Many people might continue to follow a lectionary and other materials that provide Scripture readings and reflections for each day of Lent and be led by it to prayer. It is possible use prayer books, journals, apps, or online resources that offer different forms of prayer, such as meditation, contemplation, praise, worship, adoration, thanksgiving, and supplication. In some
places there are groups of friends, or parishioners, who join prayer meetings, retreats, or online communities that share prayer requests and support each other in prayer. Most people create a prayer space in their home or workplace that helps them to focus on God. We should all look for an opportunity to pray without distractions and practice silence or solitude as a way of listening to God and being attentive to His presence. Whatever method or style of prayer we choose, the important thing is to pray with sincerity of heart, humility, honesty, and openness. During Lent, we should pray especially for the grace of conversion, so we can be inspired to experience the need of repentance and change and be led to encounter Jesus in the Sacrament of Penance. May we all grow in a deep desire to know the Lord more intimately and to love him more fully with the hunger for his grace and a thirst for his Spirit. Communal Prayer. Time spent in prayer is never only personal. We all know that every individual action of one person has an impact on the whole community. Together in prayer, as we walk a synodal way, we grow in a deep sense of awareness that every act of love or time of common worship can profoundly strengthen and sanctify the whole Christian community and the whole human family. We are all connected in a special way as members of the Body of Christ, and we share the same mission and vision by celebrating of the Eucharist. This is the most profound and ultimate way of prayer. At each Mass we engage personally with the Paschal Mystery of the Lord and make it our own to be led by him, through the sacrifice of the cross to the glory of his Resurrection and our life in Him. The mystery of the Cross and the mystery of love Jesus shares with us can be understood in a deeper sense through prayer. Renewing our commitment to attend the Mass every Sunday would be the best step to renew ourselves in the life of prayer. Prayers for the World. Both the celebration of the Eucharist and our personal daily prayer nourishes our faith, strengthens our hope, and increases our charity towards others. During Lent and beyond we are called to share our gifts and resources with the world around us, especially with those who are in need. We are to take care of the poor, the oppressed and the marginalized, and are to join them in their struggle for justice and dignity in the best way we can. Every good deed is always inspired and properly executed with the assistance of our continuing prayers, making us God’s instruments of peace, justice, and mercy, which is so much needed in the world today. Dear Friends, prayer is basically a conversation with God who is waiting for us. It doesn’t have to be made up of loads of words as it is all about the conversion of heart. It’s not just “saying prayers”, it is more about living by them, letting our heart declare our love for God and others. Let this Lent be for all of us a sacred time of our spiritual renewal in prayer so we can all become who we are supposed to be in relationship with God and with each other. Our life prayer is a statement about who we are. The future of the world depends on our prayers and begins in us. Even though our prayers do not give any extra reverence to God, thy certainly make us more revered before Him so we walk “humbly with the Lord.” Have a blessed and grace filled Lent,
Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski Episcopal Vicar

Religious Education Dear St. Mary’s Family, As we journey through Lent, we are centering catechesis on ways to seek the peace Christ gives us in the sacrament of Penance. He said to His disciples, “Peace I leave you, my peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you.” (John 14:27) The blessing of Christ’s peace and joy awaits all those who seek Him in the sacrament of Penance with a contrite heart. Students and families have the opportunity to receive the sacrament of Penance throughout Lent. We especially pray for First Communicants preparing to receive the sacrament for the first time. May all of us who receive the sacrament of Penance instituted by Christ Himself, return renewed, sanctified, and strengthened in Him. Wishing all a safe and enjoyable winter recess! Mrs. Granieri

Rosary 101 Recap This month we held two sessions of Rosary 101 on Thursday, February 8th. The first session was held in the High School Chapel with twenty-eight Sophomore students in attendance. Cathy Morrissey did a wonderful job presenting a condensed version of the evening program to the students. Thank you, Mr. Cannattella and Sister Mary Magdeline, for your efforts in making this a reality. We hope to do this again in the future. In the evening, we hosted a Rosary 101 session for the adults. We listened to meditative music to quiet our minds prior to the program which started with the story of Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes, followed by identifying each Rosary bead and prayer associated with it. Cathy then instructed attendees on how to pray the Rosary. We then prayed the Joyful Mysteries with the Daughters of Mary reading a meditation passage while we prayed. Upon completion of the program, Father Dom offered a blessing and attendees were able to socialize for the remainder of the evening. There were nineteen participants including five Daughters of Mary with several new faces in attendance.

Knights of Columbus Father William A. Daly S.J. Council #2122 Serving St. Mary’s Parish in Manhasset and St. Aloysius Parish In Great Neck www.kofc2122.org
What is a Knights of Columbus Family? We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
Thank you to all the parishioners who made the Columbiettes’ bake sale a great success. Your continued support and generosity is truly heartwarming. Special thanks to the members of the St. Mary’s Rosary Society and The American Legion Auxiliary Manhasset Unit 304 who, along with the Columbiettes, graciously shared their time and talent and baked so many delicious desserts.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Adoration - Contrition - Thanksgiving - Supplication Prayer in Adoration of Our God I adore you Jesus, true God, and true man, present in the holy Eucharist, kneeling before you and united in spirit with all the faithful on earth and all the saints in heaven. In gratitude for so great a blessing, I love you with all my heart, for you are worthy of all praise and adoration.
Act of Contrition O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen. A Prayer of Thanksgiving (excerpt from Psalm 135) Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever; Give thanks to the God of gods, for His mercy endures forever; Give thanks to the Lord of lords, for His mercy endures forever; Who alone does great wonders, for His mercy endures forever; Who made the heavens in wisdom, for His mercy endures forever; Who spread out the earth upon the waters, for His mercy endures forever; Who made the great lights, for His mercy endures forever; The sun to rule over the day, for His mercy endures forever. Supplication arms us with the strength and courage to suffer and wait while we ask for relief. If we’re truly humble, we will ask in faith and continue to believe even when life doesn’t turn out like we had hoped (James 1:5-8).
Sample Prayers of Supplication For protection: Dear Lord, I am afraid. I pray for your power and protection over me right now. Give me discernment in my relationships and my decisions. I want to leave behind whatever is harmful to me or detestable to you. Help me find people to speak Biblical truth to me. I believe that you can do all things and that you have me in your hands. I trust you and obey you. In Jesus’ name, Amen. For faith: Dear Lord, I’m confused. You feel so far away. Life doesn’t make sense right now. What are you doing? Why are all these things happening? Show yourself to me. I will read your Word and wait for you to speak. I will choose to trust that you are good because you have always done good for me. You Exposition and Adoration died for me! I will trust that you are big enough to handle my of the doubts, my fears, and my confusion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
