From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him.” (Mark 9:7)
Today’s Gospel offers us a good summary of the Christian life. The mountain experience is what we are doing today as we gather for worship and nourishment. With the eyes of faith, we see Jesus in His glory. For us, today, it is hidden under the form of Bread and Wine while the valley, that place where the Disciples had to go back to, symbolizes where we go after today’s celebration. We leave here to obey the Words of the Father to listen to Jesus and so live out our Christian vocation. The valley can be that place of holiness if we hear the command and take up the cross to follow Jesus in service to others. The Disciples, in seeing the glorified Jesus, now have the seed planted of the reality of the One they are following. While they do not completely understand the ministry of Jesus at this moment, they are being shaped and formed in holiness for future leadership. St. Thomas Aquinas puts it this way: “At His transfiguration, Christ showed His Disciples the splendor of His beauty, to which He will shape and color those who are His.” And so the holiness of Jesus, or glorified Jesus, is our hope and goal. It is lived out and perfected in the moments of clarity and the times of uncertainty. Holiness must be seen as a daily invitation to be lived out in our struggles and accomplishments.
That’s not how a lot of us view holiness, is it? We are so often filled with the many things our lives ask of us to accomplish daily. There is feeding the kids, going to the office or factory, looking for a job, paying our bills, and so on. We may be worried about our health, encountering a sadness, and the many other things that fill our days and nights. But in the midst of all these, Lent still invites us to look beneath the surface of our daily lives to see the place where Jesus is revealed to us. We might not encounter the wonder of those Disciples who saw Jesus transfigured and saw His divinity. Maybe the Father doesn’t speak as clearly to us as He did to those Disciples who are told to listen to Jesus. BUT that same God wants us to see the Jesus in our midst.
So how can we feel and encounter the presence of Jesus? Let us go back to Sacred Scripture, “This is my Beloved Son. Listen to Him.” The operative word here is “LISTEN.” To desire to follow Jesus is, of course, wonderful, but it takes more than just a desire. We have to know who Jesus is and, knowing Him, we can then follow. To know what Jesus wants of us we need to enter that place of silence. It is in that place of silence that we can hear and listen to His voice. Lent is a time to block out, or, at least, push aside the many voices that clamor for our attention. Many of those voices can certainly distract us from listening to Jesus, so the work is to focus. We can only focus if we allow ourselves times of silence during the day. Come away, open the Word, and ponder what Jesus is trying to say. It isn’t as difficult as it sounds; it just takes time and a desire to listen. Give yourself that gift this Lent, the gift of listening.
I also encourage you to take advantage of the gift of healing and forgiveness that is found through the Sacrament of Confession. Come to Jesus and hear His words of forgiveness as He unburdens you of your sins. It can be so freeing and a blessing for the journey. Don’t let pride or the Evil One keep you from experiencing God’s mercy.
Lent is also a wonderful time to consider (if you don’t already) attending daily Mass. Also, each Friday, the parish prays the Stations of the Cross at 7:00 PM. This wonderful and ancient prayer form calls us to accompany Jesus in the suffering and death on His life-giving Cross.
Please see the bulletin and our web page for information on retreats and other opportunities to encounter Jesus offered online. Let us be creative in these days so as not to let this Lenten time slip away.
In Jesus, our suffering Lord, Fr. Bob
The Second Sunday of Lent | February 25, 2024
Stewards of God’s Gifts
In today’s First Reading, we hear about Abraham’s obedience to God.
Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Service: We, too, are called to be at service to God. We can practice that by being at service to our neighbor. Is there anyone around you (family, friends, neighbors) who can use your assistance in something? Perhaps you can offer to take an elderly friend to Mass or to the grocery store (or even do their shopping for them). Perhaps you can just be an ear for someone who needs to talk.
The collection for Sunday, February 18, 2024 amounted to $23,577.00.
The collection for Sunday, February 19, 2023 amounted to $24,376.00.

A Special Note from Fr. Bob
Dear Parishioners,
Sr. Elizabeth Mary Wallace, IHM, has lived in our Convent since her retirement 11 years ago. Sister Elizabeth Mary came to us from Saint Peter of Alcantara in Port Washington, where she taught art for many years. She was a wonderful teacher dedicated to her students, and instilled in them a love of art.
Sr. Elizabeth Mary was born in Huntington, New York, and in 1953, she entered The Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Scranton, Pennsylvania. As an educator, she was also a cherished member of the St. Mary’s Elementary School faculty for several years. After her retirement in residence with us, she has decided, for health reasons, to enter the IHM sister’s retirement home, Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.
It is with sadness but great hope for Sr. Elizabeth Mary that she begins this next phase of her religious life. Many of us will remember Sr. Elizabeth Mary attending daily Mass. She became a great prayer warrior for the parish and many people who asked for her prayers during her time with us. We have all benefited from this great powerhouse of prayer.
On a personal note, I will miss sister Elizabeth Mary very much. We have served together in two parishes, and I have come to see a woman not only dedicated to Jesus and the Gospel but one given a great talent in art. With her kind and engaging personality, she became an inspiring influence on her students, many of whom still keep in contact with her.
Please join me in thanking Sister Elizabeth Mary’s “yes” to Jesus to serve the Church as a religious and her extraordinary talent in art as she begins this next phase of her ministry. Remember to pray for her as she has done so wonderfully for us!
In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell. Your almsgiving in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box will help the poor to celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.
We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Three Adoration Prayers
For God’s Greatness:
“Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness; let us exalt his name together.” (Psalm 34:3)
Dear Lord,
I adore you because you are great, and greatly to be praised! (Psalm 145:3) All I have to do is look around to see your greatness displayed. Creation shows me your wonderful work, your power and beauty in all things. Romans 11:36 reminds me of this, “For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever!”
When I slow down from the busyness of life, I notice you more. I hear you in the birds singing and sense your presence in the gentle wind. I get a glimpse of your goodness in the miracle of new life. The morning sunrise reminds me of your mercies that begin fresh every morning (Lamentations 3:22). As I go about my day, I will admire how great you are by pausing to enjoy what you created. In the holy name of your son Jesus I pray, Amen.
To Our Powerful God:
“God has spoken plainly, and I have heard it many times: Power, O God, belongs to you;” (Psalm 62:11)
Almighty God,
Sometimes I feel like the disciples when they were in the boat, tossed around by powerful winds and fierce waves. But then I remember how the story ends, with your son Jesus speaking peace to the storm. The disciples were amazed, wondering what kind of man this was who could calm a raging storm (Matthew 8:24-27). I adore you because you are the only One powerful enough to quiet the storms in our lives.
It’s so easy to get overwhelmed when I’m struck by difficult circumstances. But I don’t have to fear anything as a child of God. All power belongs to you! Thank you Lord for your mighty power at work in my life right now. Thank you also for your Holy Spirit who provides power within me to do the things you’ve called me to do. I will never forget where my source of power comes from. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
Giving God Glory:
“Praise his glorious name forever! Let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and amen!” (Psalm 72:19)
Holy God,
All glory belongs to you. I come to you in prayer to glorify your name—not because of what you do, but because of who you are. I adore you for being my Abba Father. Your unconditional love for me stretches to the highest mountain peaks and reaches to the depths of the seas. It is beyond anything I can fathom. Your love never ends, and great is your faithfulness! (Lamentations 3:23).
