From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“For every tree is known by its own fruit.”(Luke 6:44) Today, we come to the end of what in St. Luke’s Gospel is referred to as the “Sermon on the Plain.” This is, of course, parallel to what we find in St. Matthew’s Gospel, the more familiar “Sermon on the Mount.” Both of these important teachings of Jesus are maps fundamental to living a Christian life. Last week, we heard Jesus instruct His disciples to love their enemies, do good to those who hurt you, turn the other cheek, and treat others the way you want to be treated. As if those were not difficult enough, in today’s Gospel we are given additional criteria to be followers of Jesus. Jesus begins His discourse by reminding His disciples (and us) of the responsibility we have to guide and direct each other. But to do so, we ourselves must be steeped in our faith. If not, we become those without direction leading others. That leads all to the possibility of being lost. To offer sight to others, we ourselves must be part of an ongoing attempt to “see” more clearly. Sight comes to the followers of Jesus in many different ways. It is revealed through faithfulness to prayer, reflecting on the Sacred Word of God, seeking assistance to the questions of life, and probably, most importantly, regular use of the Sacrament of Confession. Jesus goes on to speak about the need to bear good fruit in our lives. This demands living what we have learned through the disciplines that keep us close to Jesus. The Old Testament Prophet Sirach says so beautifully that “the fruit of a tree shows the care it has had.” In the third part of the Gospel, Jesus points out that a person’s words and actions will reveal their character. A person of good heart will naturally be inclined to do good while an evil person will do evil. Jesus says, “A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil.” In effect, we can only give what we have. The challenge for us is to be open to the path offered to us through Jesus so that goodness and truth become our natural inclination. Last week, we were reminded that we are not to judge. The criteria we use to judge others will be how we ourselves are judged at the end of time. Pretty sobering thought, isn’t it! This week, that theme is expanded upon. That mercy is now present in a call to look first at our lives before we point out the faults of others. Here lies the key. How easy it is to condemn others for their failings. It doesn’t take much reflection on our part. The more difficult journey is being “selfreflective.” The “beam” in our eye can be more offensive to God than the “splinter” we notice in our brother or sister’s eye. The reflection that we are challenged to live by is to first cleanse our hearts of that which keeps us from being bearers of “good fruit.” All our prayers, reflections, confessions, and acts of piety should first turn us inward so that, as St. Paul says, we can “always be devoted to the work of the Lord.” Next week is Ash Wednesday when we begin the Great and Holy Season of Lent. It is certainly a time of self-reflection and purification. The Readings from these last two weeks may be good additions to our spiritual reflection. In these ongoing sermons of Jesus, he invites us to journey ever more deeply with Him. While never easy, we do have the grace of God “who gives us the victory through Jesus Christ.” So never loose heart, my dear brothers and sisters, God is not finished with us! Your labor is not in vain. Bring your failings to Jesus and place them on the altar at Holy Mass and, as you receive His most Precious Body and Blood, feel His grace welling up within you. Let go of anger, judgment and harshness. Let your own faithfulness and sight help to lead others to the truth of Jesus and to ultimate conversion. Please see this bulletin for the Lenten regulations of fast and abstinence. These regulations are easy to ignore, BUT they keep us in a discipline and united to the Universal Church. Please, I encourage you to take them very seriously. Have a blessed and fruitful Lent! In Jesus, Fr. Bob The Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time | February 27, 2022

Stewards of God’s Gifts In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches that we should not be so quick to judge others. We should look at our own sins and shortcomings, and see how we can become closer to God. Living Stewardship (Pillar of Service): This week do something nice for someone in your family. Offer that good deed to God as thanksgiving for all He has done for you.

A Holyday of Fast and Abstinence* Mass at 9:00 AM, 12:00 Noon, and 7:00 PM Liturgy of the Word Service at 4:00 PM Ashes will be distributed at all Masses and the 4:00 PM Prayer Service. Today, the Church begins the season of Lent, a time of preparation for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter. We are invited to listen more intently to the Word of God and devote ourselves to prayer, fasting, and alsmgiving so that we are prepared through a spirit of repentance to renew our baptismal promises on Easter. As the priest imposes the ashes on each person, he says one of the traditional formulas: Repent, and believe in the Gospel. or Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.
*FAST AND ABSTINENCE - Those who have reached their fourteenth year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of eighteen and fifty-nine are also bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means to limit oneself to a single full meal and avoid food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day.
Respect Life Ministry St. Mary’s Respect Life Ministry invites you to participate -- through prayer, fasting, and witness -- in the local campaign of 40 Days For Life. This is an effort aimed at “changing hearts and minds.” The Spring 2022 campaign begins on Ash Wednesday, March 2nd, and runs through April 10th, Palm Sunday. This is truly a lifesaving measure, as there are “turnarounds” (women who change their minds at the facility) in each campaign. The organization’s website describes it as “an internationally coordinated 40-day campaign that aims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and a peaceful all-day vigil in front of abortion businesses.” (40DaysForLife.com) In our area, the local campaign of peaceful, prayerful witness will take place at: Public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood 540 Fulton Avenue Hempstead, New York More details are available at 40DaysForLife.com; find Hempstead NY through the “Location” search. The local campaign is coordinated by Pro-Bikers For Life. More information on witnessing can be found through the Diocesan Respect Life page, https://drvclife.org/witness/. For further details, email Catherine Dillon at RespectLife@StMary.ws.

Parish Social Ministry Pope Francis’ Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) stated very clearly, there is an inseparable bond between our faith and the poor. He asked that we hear the cry of the poor and never abandon them. Please keep this in the front of your mind and consider donating the following to the food pantry this week:
Shampoo Conditioner
Toothpaste Deordorant
Donations may be left in the donation box located in the south lobby of the Church or brought to the Parish Social Ministry office located on the ground floor level of the convent facing the east side of the church. Thank you for your generosity and support!
Society of St. Vincent de Paul In the Gospel today, Jesus uses images in speaking to his disciples: “Can a blind man act as guide to a blind man?...Why look at the speck in your brother’s eye when you miss the plank in your own?...A good tree does not produce decayed fruit....” It is true that donations come to the Society because a good person produces goodness from the good in their heart. If you or someone you know needs assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385 ext. 1125 or SVDP@stmary.ws. If you would like to make a donation, you may use the collection slots at the doors of the church or place an envelope in the regular collection marked “St. Vincent de Paul Society.” For furniture and household donations, please call 516-746-8250 to arrange for a pick up.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Prayers for Eucharistic Adoration Mighty Warrior, I thank You for this special period. We gather with hearts of adoration. We continually devote ourselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, and to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Lord, we devote ourselves to the partaking of Your body and of Your blood as the Scriptures encourage us to. We partake in this so that we appreciate the fact that we have life in You, only by Your selfless sacrifice, Amen. (Acts 2:42) Holy God, I pray that day by day we continue with one mind in the church, and break bread from house to house. Let the Eucharist be an occasion that unites us as we reflect on the sacrifice that You made for us. Let us come together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising You for all that You have done for us. We thank You for loving us so much that You gave Your only Son for us, Amen. (Acts 2:46-47) Awesome God, the cup of blessing that we bless at the Lord’s Supper is a sharing Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church
in the blood of Christ. The bread that we break is a sharing of the body of Christ. Since there is one bread, we believers who are many, are united into one body, for we all partake of the one bread which represents the body of Christ. We thank You for Your body and we thank You for Your blood that unites us, Amen. (1 Corinthians 10:16-17)
Eternal God, I bless Your Name because You are awesome, and You are holy. I do not take the breaking of bread and the drinking of wine lightly because this is a choice that I have made to serve and accept You. I cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. I cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. I pray that we reflect in our hearts before we partake because we do not want to provoke You to jealousy, Amen. (1 Corinthians 10:21-22)
Precious Lord, I magnify Your Name because You sit high and lifted up! This day is special as we gather to invite Your body and blood within us so that we can live in You. I pray that we do not come for the wrong reasons like some of the church did in the book of Corinthians. Let us not come to eat the Lord’s Supper if we are hungry nor to get drunk. I pray that we respect what this is and glorify You through the partaking of the bread and the wine, Amen. (1 Corinthians 11:20-22) St. Mary’s Girls’ CYO Grades 5 and 8 Complete Undefeated L.I. Retrouvaille Weekend
Worldwide Marriage Encounter
You Can Help Heal Your Marriage
Worldwide Marriage Encounter announces an in-person experience in New England. This non-residential weekend takes place at St. Gabriel The Archangel Church 151 Mendon St., Upton, MA from Friday, March 18 - Sunday, March 20, 2022. Couples can drive to the experience from their homes or stay at one of several hotels in the area. Worldwide Marriage Encounter is designed to deepen and enrich the joys a couple shares together whether they’ve been married only a short time or many years. This inperson experience will be conducted in accordance with CDC safety protocols including social distancing. To apply contact Joe & Ginny Vatalle at 800-710-9963 or visit wwmema.org.
Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? The Retrouvaille Program is for married couples facing difficult challenges in their relationships. It is primarily a practical program to improve communication, build stronger marriages and help couples reconnect. Presenters are not trained marriages counselors, but rather couples sharing their personal stories of marital struggles and the tools they used to rediscover their love. For confidential information about the Retrouvaille program, or to register for the upcoming weekend that begins on Friday, May 13, 2022, please visit our website www.helpourmarriage.org or call 1-800-470-2230 and you will be connected directly and confidentially to a couple from Long Island/Metro Retrouvaille who can help.
For those wishing to participate in a virtual experience, there is one beginning on March 9, 2022. It will be on seven Wednesday evenings (concluding on April 20) from 7:00 PM to about 9:00 PM. To apply, contact Jimmy & Bernice Acevedo at 877-697-9963 or visit bq-wwme.org.
