From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“He grasped her hand and held her up.” (Mark1:31) A few weeks ago, in the Scriptures from the prophet Isaiah, this image of God “grasping us by the hand” really hit me. It has been resonating with me these past few weeks. I just really love that image of God, not just holding our hand, but also rather grasping it. The imagery of grasping is so much richer than simply holding. Grasping implies a desire to never let go. In the Gospel today, we hear that Jesus grasps the hand and helps up St. Peter’s mother-in-law. Think about that....we are so loved by Jesus that He wants to grasp our hand and help us up in the difficulties we sometimes encounter in life. In our first reading, Job has encountered some truly painful moments. What he expresses today is that despair we can sometimes feel when life becomes burdensome. Job cries out in that pain. Those words can be a comfort for us if we are struggling, knowing even people of faith have felt that darkening of the night. Job will continue that vein for a few more chapters until he speaks directly to God. God will speak to him words of hope. We don’t have to wait for the end of Job’s dialogue. We have that hope right now...TODAY. As Jesus grasped the hand and helped up St. Peter’s mother-in-law, He wants to do the same for us each and every day. But how often can we push away the grasping hand that Jesus reaches out to us. Pride, pain, and wallowing in self-pity, we can refuse the help Jesus offers especially through the people He puts in our life or the aids that are supplied. As Catholic Christians, we are not only called to be the grasping hand of Jesus...but what may be even more difficult to live out, we are called to accept that hand offered to us as a gift from others. We are loved and Jesus will grasp us and help us to our feet. A good daily exercise and, especially in the times we have come out of difficult moments, is to look back at the experience. I dare say when we do we can then see those times the hand of God working in our lives, especially through the actions of others. We may also see those times we have refused that hand because of pride. God is constantly present and, like Jesus in today’s Gospel, grasps us by the hand. The question is...are we willing to accept that loving hand? I find that image of Jesus, grasping us by the hand, more poignant now more than ever.. With all that is going in the world, we certainly would have cause to despair. Yet the image remains of our Savior Jesus grasping us even more tightly to steer us through these troubled waters. Despair is easy, even Job’s friends encouraged him to turn from God. Yet he remains faithful because deep down he knows, understands, and believes that the God whom he loves and worships will never abandon him, most especially in those most trying and troubled moments. What a great and encouraging lesson for each of us. So we are called, not only to accept that loving hand, but to believe in it! Wednesday, February 14th (Ash Wednesday), begins the great and holy season of Lent. I encourage you to start to prepare for these days of fasting, penance and prayer. In Jesus, Fr. Bob

Respect Life Ministry More about Radical Solidarity… In keeping with this year’s national Respect Life theme of “Radical Solidarity” with women in need, we share here more wisdom outlined by Bishop Burbidge of the USCCB. Reminding us of Pope Francis’s words, “It presumes the creation of a new mindset,” Bishop Burbidge writes of the transformation needed within our own hearts in order to live radical solidarity: This includes collective efforts within our dioceses, parishes, schools and local communities, engagement in the public square, and pursuit of policies that help support both women and their preborn babies. It all the more so requires our individual, personal commitment to helping mothers in our own communities secure material, emotional, and spiritual support for embracing the gift of life. Radical solidarity means moving beyond the status quo and out of our comfort zones. God has given each of us particular gifts, and with those gifts He entrusts us with a role and duty within the Body of Christ. Embracing an attitude of radical solidarity calls us to honestly reflect on some challenging questions and to consider specific actions we can take to foster an authentic culture of life. Some questions we might ask ourselves could include: Do I know what efforts are happening in my area to help women who are pregnant or parenting in difficult circumstances? What are the needs? What are my gifts and talents? How can I adjust my schedule or budget to assist efforts to help moms in need and their children? Radical solidarity can be lived out in countless ways…. In addition to enshrining pro-life laws and policies, the transformation of our culture also requires continual conversion of our own hearts, so that we can recognize in every person the face of Christ and place their needs before our own.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul THE NEXT SVDP MEETING IS WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH at 7:00 PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome! We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry. In the Gospel today, we find that Jesus would rise very early before dawn and go to a deserted place to pray and then he went out to preach and to heal. Please pray for the poor and suffering, knowing that you are bringing the love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread. Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.
Parish Social Ministry Volunteer Opportunities Additional Bereavement Facilitators Are Needed We are in need of additional bereavement facilitators so that we can offer bereavement sessions three times a year and keep the facilitator commitment to one session per year. The sessions run for ten weeks and so they are a siginificant commitment for the facilitators. Dr. Lou Sabatini is offering Bereavement Facilitator Training starting April 13th and running through May 18th (six Saturdays). The training is at St. Bernards in Levittown - which is about ten miles from Manhasset. The training runs from 9:30 to 10:45 AM. If you are interested, please contact Kathleen Kosciusko at kkosciusko@stmary.ws or call 365-2705.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Needed to Serve at the Bristal Facilities EMs are needed to distribute Holy Communion at a Wednesday morning service held at each of the Bristal facilities (North Hills and Lake Success) on the first Wednesday of the month. The services are back-to-back making the time commitment about an hour and a half (10:30 AM - 12:00 Noon). You must have completed Part B of the EM Training to volunteer for this service. If you are interested, please contact Kathleen Kosciusko at kkosciusko@ stmary.ws or call 365-2705.

Rosary Society Our Mission Statement: The Rosary Society fosters devotion to Mary through prayer and good works for causes that would be dear to her heart On Sunday, January 21st the Daughters of Mary spent an evening of prayer and fellowship at Our Lady of Grace. Heartfelt thanks to Michele Bernic and OLG If you would like the Rosarians to pray for a special intention, please e-mail us at rosarysociety@stmary.ws.
The Daughters of Mary On Sunday, January 21st the Daughters of Mary spent an evening of prayer and fellowship at Our Lady of Grace. Heartfelt thanks to Michele Bernic and OLG for the gracious hospitality shown to the Daughters of Mary. The beautiful reality of virtuous friendship became evident as the girls prayed before the Presence of Our Lord in the Tabernacle and pondered the mysteries of the Visitation. The girls designed and made their own unique beaded friendship bracelets while bonding and casually conversing among themselves. The girls commented how peaceful and welcoming the Center was for their service project. Michele’s warm welcome and attention to detail, coupled with the serenity of the Center made for an enjoyable respite for all. Thank you to Cathy Morrissey for leading the girls in a scriptural Rosary that focused on the Visitation as well as Laura Sciametta, the mom who helped coordinate the evening, capturing the event with photos.
