From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“Here I am; send me.” (Isaiah 6:8) In our Scripture readings today, we hear the calls of the great prophet Isaiah and the disciples of Jesus. The common thread of prophets always seems to be a reluctance to accept the call of God to preach to the people. In our Scripture passage from Isaiah, we see him struggling with the problem of “I’m not good enough.” And like Isaiah, many of us often feel a sense of low or no self-worth. Some of the saddest responses I have had when inviting someone to ministry is the sense that they are unworthy…or worse…unloved by God. We might think, “Who am I that God might want to send me?” “I’m not good enough.” “If Jesus really knew me, He wouldn’t call me.” Even in today’s Gospel, St. Peter asks the Lord Jesus to depart from him because he is “a sinful man.” Sin, unhealthy guilt, shame, past failures, all of these separate us from God and block us from living in intimate relationship with Jesus. The first eight verses of Isaiah Chapter 6 describe one of the best known of Isaiah’s prophetic visions. He is summoned to the throne of God and surrounded by awe and terror. Isaiah is struck right between the eyes with the realization of his unworthiness. And so Isaiah cries out, “I’m a man with unclean lips, and I live among a people with unclean lips. Yet I’ve seen the king, the Lord of heavenly forces!” How many of us would be terrified to be caught in the same situation? Would we feel “ruined” if we were to stand before the throne of God? I can remember when I ran Youth Groups in some of my parishes, this sense of sinful unworthiness was so prevalent among the youth. So many of them felt that Jesus was disappointed in them for past actions. This paralyzed them with such fear that they could not accept the call of discipleship. This was like a dagger in my heart! These were good people who maybe made some wrong choices and felt they had no other alternative but to define themselves by their sins. How so very sad! St. Paul reminds us today that “Jesus died for our sins” and, as the Lord sent a burning charcoal from the incense fire in the Holy of Holies to purify Isaiah, He does something greater for us. He sent Jesus to forgive our sins. That ministry of the Cross is offered to us each day in the Sacrament of Confession (Reconciliation). Where we are purified from our sins, not by a burning charcoal, but rather those powerful words of Jesus as expressed by the priest: “Go in peace; your sins are forgiven.” Does sin keep us from the Lord at times? Yes. It is not always a bad thing if it calls us to conversion. It becomes destructive when we feel so unworthy, so filled with shame or even worse, pride, that we cannot approach the Lord for His grace and forgiveness. My dear sisters and brothers, never forget how much we are loved by God. This same God in Jesus calls us, yes, in our weakness, to be His disciples and share the Good News of salvation with our world. Do not be afraid to say yes to ministry and service, Jesus will give us the grace and power of the Holy Spirit to overcome our sin and weakness and purify us for the task at hand. Say yes to ministry and service. So when the question is asked by the Lord, “Whom shall I send,” answer from the depth of your being, “Here I am; send me.” You will never regret it! In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

Stewards of God’s Gifts In today’s Gospel, Peter and his fellow fishermen cast their nets out into the water, at Jesus’ command, and catch a large multitude of fish. Living Stewardship (Pillar of Formation): The fishermen did as Jesus commanded and were surprised at the miracle they had witnessed. May we listen to and trust in Jesus, so that we may see His good works in our lives.

Rosary Society Our Mission Statement: The Rosary Society fosters devotion to Mary through prayer and good works for causes that would be dear to her heart Invest 20 minutes of your day to pray the Rosary, and see the difference it will make in your life. If you would like the Rosarians to pray for a special intention, please e-mail us at rosarysociety@stmary.ws. FIVE REASONS TO PRAY THE ROSARY This week: # 5. The Rosary will call you to be a saint. St. John Paul II wrote: “Although the repeated Hail Mary is addressed to Mary, it is to Jesus that the act of love is ultimately directed, with her and through her. The Rosary helps us to be conformed ever more closely to Christ until we attain true holiness.” Finally, St. Therese of Lisieux offers this advice: “Do not be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her enough. And Jesus will be very happy, because the Blessed Virgin is His Mother.” - Living Faith, 2021
Learn to Pray the Rosary! ROSARY 101 Thursday, February 10th, at 7:00 PM in the Marian Room ALL PARISHIONERS, INCLUDING FAMILIES AND CHILDREN, are invited to join us as the history of Our Lady’s Rosary is explored, and its prayers and mysteries explained. Friday, February 11th Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes Mass at 9:00 AM In 1858, Lourdes was a small village of about 4,000 people located in southern France in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Between February 11, 1858 and July 16, 1858, Bernadette Soubirous, a 14-year-old girl from a poor family, experienced eighteen apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the cave of Massabielle. When Bernadette asked the Blessed Mother to identify herself, Mary said, “I am the Immaculate Conception.” The dogma of the Immaculate Conception had been solemnly defined by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854. Pilgrimages to Lourdes began around 1860. Some came seeking physical cures at the baths constructed at the spring of water Bernadette had used at the instructions of the Virgin Mary.

Sugar Mayonnaise Mustard
Juices Coffee Paper Towels

Society of St. Vincent de Paul In the Gospel today, the disciples decide to leave everything to follow Jesus. We are also called to follow Jesus, who tells us that “whatever you do to the least of mine, you do for me.” Your gift to the poor can bring the love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread. If you or someone you know needs assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385 ext. 1125 or SVDP@stmary.ws. If you would like to make a donation, you may use the collection slots at the doors of the church or place an envelope in the regular collection marked “St. Vincent de Paul Society.” For furniture and household donations, please call 516-746-8250 to arrange for a pick up.

Fr. Jude’s Farewell Mass - Sunday, January 30, 2022
Prayer for Father Lord Jesus, Word Made Flesh, From the beginning of creation You named and claimed us for yourself. Look with kindness upon your servant, Father Jude, Who leaves this community, marked by your cross, fed by your word, filled with our care, and sent to be Your presence to all he meets. Guide him on the way, and bless him with your wisdom, that he may be a word of hope for a world in need. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Reflections on the Creed by Fr. Dominik Wegiel “I look forward to the Resurrection of the Dead” After covering the Trinity and the Church, we now reflect on the world to come at the end of time. At the end of the Creed, we proudly profess, “I look forward to the Resurrection of the Dead.” The reality of death is a deep mystery that has haunted our human race since the beginning. We know that it was through the sin of Adam and Eve that death entered the world. Jesus endured the humiliation of death in order to redeem humanity. Regardless of belief, every person has to confront the fact that at the end of the day, we will die. Bishop Barron writes, “Contemporary cosmologists and astrophysicists have only intensified this sense of meaninglessness by reminding us that the earth will one day be swallowed up by the sun, the sun will eventually burn out, and the universe itself is destined finally to pass into the virtual nonexistence of total entropy” (Barron, 167). But we, as Catholics, cannot profess such nihilism; in fact, we hold on to the great promise that there is life after death. We read in the first chapter of Genesis that God created the universe and proclaimed that it was very good! Bishop Barron writes, “It strikes biblically minded people as foolish to hold that the God who made the body and the material world would simply give up on all of that as a lost cause” (Barron, 168). The life we believe will come is not simply a realm of spirits. We look forward to the resurrection of the dead! The next life is not simply a spiritual realm where we escape the material world. The resurrection of the body at the end of time is the reintegration of the soul with the body. But what does this mean exactly? Will the new heaven and the new earth and the resurrection of the body be a reestablishment of the status quo? Bishop Barron quotes John Polkinghorne that the resurrection of the dead will both be a continuation of the old and also something radically new. Bishop Barron states that the life to come “is an embodied life on high with God, which is both a continuation of the life we live here below and something so new” (Barron, 172). St. Paul points to the mystery, “No eye has seen, no ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).
“And the Life of the World to Come” It is difficult to know what heaven will be like. In this new life, the justified will see God face to face. Bishop Barron invokes the image of the city to help us grasp the nature of heaven. In the Book of Revelation, the author calls heaven the New Jerusalem. The Book of Revelation states, “I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband” (Revelation 21:2). Usually, in the Bible, cities are often viewed with suspicion. The Book of Genesis attributes the origin of cities to Cain who was humanity’s first murderer. The Bible views the ancient cities of Babylon, Egypt, and Rome as centers of evil, sin, and human dysfunction. Yet, we know as New Yorkers, the city is the center of human civilization. It is a place of business, entertainment, sports, and the arts. In the city, we see human flourishing in all of its drama and beauty. In heaven, there will be no sin, and therefore all the darkness that city life can bring such as violence and loneliness will be removed. Bishop Barron writes, “The city on high retains the beauty of life in intense communion and none of the dross” (Barron, 174).
Church of Saint Mary | 10
Reflections on the Creed (con’t.) This leads to Bishop Barron’s final point that this New Jerusalem will be an eternal liturgy. The old Jerusalem was defined by its temple, liturgies, and rituals. The New Jerusalem will be a place where we see God face to face and offer praise and worship to the true God. Bishop Barron writes, “We should not think of heaven as an endless version of liturgy on earth, but rather… in the New Jerusalem, we shall live in community, sing in harmony, understand the divine truth, commune with the angels, internalize the body and blood of Christ, converse face to face with God, and enter ever more deeply into a life of love” (Barron, 176). This is the life that all of us are called to share and experience. This now marks the end of my bulletin series on the Nicene Creed and review of Bishop Barron’s book, Light From Light. I hope and pray that all of you were able to learn something new or understand more deeply the truth we profess as Catholics. I know it’s a common experience for myself to mindlessly recite the Creed without much thought. Yet, it is a powerful moment in our Liturgy where we express our common belief. The Nicene Creed is an invitation to understand the mystery of life, humanity, and God. It points to the past, present, and future. The Creed centers us on who Jesus is and his relationship within the Trinity and to humanity. Christ is the bridge between heaven and earth, between the human and the divine. We do not fully grasp the mystery here, but our hope is that what we profess every Sunday, we will one day come to fully know in the life to come.
Ed. Note: All references are to Light from Light: A Theological Reflection on the Nicene Creed by Bishop Robert Barron which is available in hardcover from Word on Fire (bookstore. wordonfire.org) and on Amazon.com. Amazon also has a Kindle version. Thank you, Father Dominik, for helping us to understand and more deeply appreicate this profession of faith we make every Sunday at Mass. You skillfully combined key theological points made by Bishop Barron in his book with down-to-earth personal insights. Looking forward to your next project!

What is a Knights of Columbus Family? We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
All boys and girls ages 9-14 are invited to participate in the 2022 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held on Saturday, February 12th, at 8:30 AM at St. Mary’s Immaculata Hall gym. There is no charge for entry. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament A Prayer for Ordinary Time Creator Redeemer Sustainer God, How extraordinary is Your “ordinary time.” How uncommon is the commonplace in Your Kingdom. The mundane is made miraculous, full of holy opportunities. The smallest joy a jubilee! Created anew may we grow tall and “grace-full” in Your likeness. Redeemed by Your sacrifice may we come to know the depths of Your love. Sustained by Your Spirit may we be steadfast and shining in Your service.
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church
We humbly ask that You continue to bless us with all we need for the living of these days, these wondrous ordinary days, that our everyday lives may be gifted to experience the vitality of Christian community, to share Your message of hope, reaching out to the poor and hurting, and bringing glory and honor to You, our God. Amen.

Retrouvaille Weekend You Can Help Heal Your Marriage Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? The Retrouvaille Program is for married couples facing difficult challenges in their relationships. It is primarily a practical program to improve communication, build stronger marriages and help couples reconnect. Presenters are not trained marriages counselors, but rather couples sharing their personal stories of marital struggles and the tools they used to rediscover their love. For confidential information about the Retrouvaille program, or to register for the upcoming weekend that begins on Friday, May 13, 2022, please visit our website www.helpourmarriage.org or call 1-800-470-2230 and you will be connected directly and confidentially to a couple from Long Island/Metro Retrouvaille who can help. O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith.
