From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“You are my beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:22)
Te Feast of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season and is another “epiphany” (manifestation) of the Lord. Today’s feast is not a quiet scene in a stable with a few local shepherds from the felds as witnesses or the visit of the Magi. Instead, the baptism is set in a public ritual with lots of people around. Te people have acknowledged the darkness of sin in their lives by accepting the baptism of St. John in the Jordan. Jesus enters the same waters and, after His baptism, the Holy Spirit descends upon Him. Jesus is the promised “Chosen One” anticipated by Isaiah; He is the “light for the nations.”
St. John tells his listeners that while he baptizes with water, One is coming who will baptize with fre and the Holy Spirit. Tis fre will, in the power of the Holy Spirit, burn away our sins and “purify” us to be a worthy ofering to God. Jesus is declared by the Father as the One who is to come to bring forgiveness to all nations. Isaiah tells us that the Anointed One will come announcing the time of salvation with truth AND gentleness, that even the “bruised reed He will not crush.” Our Savior, whose birth we have just celebrated, comes in power, but also in kindness for all His people. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus’ ministry was that of hope and healing to all people who walked in darkness. Darkness and sin are no longer the lasting power in our world. Our Jesus comes to us, that through His love and compassion, we may embrace the light of His way.
Today is a good day for each of us to recall the promises that were either made for us at our baptism or we have made ourselves. Baptism is the radical change in our life when we are forever changed and confgured to Jesus. We become part of His Body and, as part of His Body, we share, as heirs, in all that God promises. Tis promise doesn’t come to us “without a cost.”
Te cost is not something we can purchase; it is rather a way of living. While it is certainly true that nothing we can do will ever “earn” us salvation because that is free gift from God, it is also true that we have to be willing to cooperate with the plan of salvation. Tat plan consists of our willingness to walk in the light. Te light and plan that Jesus has for our lives is living as He did. Tis is seen most completely by the way we live our lives. Our participation in the sacramental life of the Church, embracing forgiveness and compassion in our relationship with others, and living as He did “not shouting out loud or squelching even the slightest fame” are certain signs that we are living out the promises of our baptism. As St. Paul tells us, we must be willing to “bring the Good News of Peace” to all we meet.
Tese are some of the ways we can judge our own lives to see if we are in conformity to the message of Jesus. Ponder today your own life in light of the power of your baptism. Are there any areas or relationships that need the “fre of the Holy Spirit” to purify you? Are there any times you have not opened yourself to forgiveness? Is your worship of Jesus true and life giving? Te wonder of our God is that we don’t have to live in the darkness unless we choose to. We have the forgiveness of Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) to free ourselves of those things that keep our baptism from truly being the power that it was intended.
Tese days of Tanksgiving and Christmas have been busy times for our Good Samaritan House and St. Vincent de Paul Conference. We assisted many families for Tanksgiving and Christmas, giving out gift cards, food, and toys to those in need. Many thanks to our wonderful and dedicated volunteers at our Outreach Ofce and St. Vincent de Paul Conference. I am grateful for their work at feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and helping all those in need.
In Jesus, Fr. Bob
J Stewards of God’s Gifts
Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord.
Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Hospitality: John the Baptist prepared the way of the Lord before the people. May we be like him and introduce our friends and family to Jesus and His mercy. We can do this with a smile on our face and courage in our hearts when we ask the Lord to help us serve Him.

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY
NJHS Students Spread Christmas Magic
Just before the Christmas break, our youngest students in our Saint Mary’s Elementary School Early Childhood Program were treated to a heartwarming experience courtesy of our National Junior Honor Society. They were united in the spirit of Christmas, eagerly anticipating the birth of Jesus and the joy of the giving season. The children embarked on an adventure in the beautifully decorated hallways of Immaculata Hall, their Middle School buddies guiding them with care. They gathered in classrooms to partake in a crafting project featuring snowglobes, snowflakes, wreaths, and snowmen with uplifting sayings like "Following Jesus is Cool!" and "Like each snowflake, we are uniquely made by God!" The afternoon was filled with merriment, a perfect opportunity for our students to come together in anticipation of Jesus' birthday. This event was a beautiful display of unity, with students of all ages and backgrounds coming together to celebrate. A heartfelt thanks to our exceptional NJHS advisor, Mrs. Jen Schnatz, for orchestrating this unifying activity that brought smiles to so many faces this Christmas!
Project Impact Club Volunteers at RMHC
Twelve members of the Saint Mary’s High School Project Impact Club, along with their advisor, Mr. Stalter, recently visited the Ronald McDonald House at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, where they volunteered their time preparing food. Their ongoing commitment to service was evident as they worked collaboratively to prepare a meal for the residents, with each student assigned a specific role. The dinner, made with care, was later served to the families of pediatric patients staying at the facility while their children undergo treatments.
The students' dedication to serving those in need, particularly in providing sustenance to the families and caregivers of young children facing serious illnesses, is truly commendable. For the past two years, members of the Project Impact Club have volunteered their time at the Ronald McDonald House. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and their involvement in such a wonderful program, which not only offers respite for parents but also provides hope through the kindness of strangers who share the Gospel message to love and serve others selflessly.
We are grateful to the Ronald McDonald House Charities staff for the opportunity to participate in this fulfilling experience for our students.
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who sanctifed and blessed the water of baptism for all Christians through his own baptism by John, continue your work of cleansing all in the Church from sin by the power of your Holy Spirit, so that we who honor Jesus as your beloved Son might live in the holiness of perfect love, to the glory of your holy name.- from the Gospel of Te Baptism of the Lord, Feast
Give to the LORD, you sons of God, give to the LORD glory and praise, Give to the LORD the glory due his name; adore the LORD in holy attire.
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Closing Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church
Titus 2:11-14 Te grace of God appeared, and he ofers salvation to all people. He teaches us to say NO to ungodliness and worldy passions, and to live a selfcontrolled, upright and godly life while we wait for the blessed hope-the appearing of the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He Justifes us with his grace and we become heirs in hope of eternal life. How can you live an upright and godly life in your relationship? One way is by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter (WWME.org). It can help you in your communication, and help you to grow in intimacy and grow in faith with one another. Some of the dates to sign up are:
January 24-26, 2025 in North Easton, MA

Jubilee Year of Hope Update
On Sunday, December 29th, 2024, Bishop Barres celebrated the Feast of the Holy Family at St. Agnes Cathedral and inaugurated the Jubilee Year of Hope in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. A special Mass was celebrated according to a Jubilee ritual prescribed by Pope Francis. A Jubilee Cross has been enshrined in the Cathedral for public veneration. Troughout the year, the faithful may make a pilgrimage to the Cross at St. Agnes and receive a plenary indulgence.
“Te 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope is a time for us and our extended families to cast the nets of Eucharistic charity throughout Long Island understanding that the Eucharist is a “Fountain of Charity” -- a Fountain of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, a Fountain of the Gospel of Life and a Fountain of every dimension of Catholic Social Justice teaching.” (homily of Bishop Barres at the Feast of the Holy Family Mass)
