From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:9) The story of Samuel is a metaphor for the spiritual life and it raises the question we might ask ourselves: “Are we asleep to God?” We don’t look like we are asleep. In fact, we appear quite busy and probably are, along with the majority of Americans, sleep-deprived each day. But still, we may be asleep to God. His voice is present, yet that sense of being “asleep” might drown out God’s voice to us. The first step in our relationship to Jesus is “waking up.” Waking up can happen in many ways. We read a passage of Scripture, or hear a message in a preaching, and it takes root in us - we wake up. A project fails or a dream dissolves and we realize we have to readjust our priorities - we wake up. A sickness or tragedy shakes our world and we look for hope - we wake up. In our spiritual journey, that process of becoming “awake” to God’s voice is a discipline that takes a lifetime to perfect. It is those times that we might be frustrated by the softness of that voice that we might lose heart. But being awake calls us to open our hearts to be in tune to God’s presence. In the Gospel, we are given a clue to the discipline of being open to the voice of Jesus. The disciples of St. John the Baptist hear John’s words, “Behold the Lamb of God,” in referring to Jesus. They are intrigued and go to Jesus. They ask Him, “Where do you stay?” and Jesus responds, “Come and see.” The invitation of Jesus is one that demands a response on our part. A response that is not passive but active in seeking the place where Jesus is. Our Holy Father of blessed memory, St. John Paul the Great, and our present Pope, Francis, remind us that faith comes first by a personal relationship with Jesus. This relationship is found when we are awake and seek the place where Jesus is. In this deepening of our oneness with Jesus, we begin to be more aware of His voice speaking to us. Without that personal relationship, we run the risk of only going through the motions of faith. Doing the externals of faith is NOT the same as giving over our heart. A good example is Mass itself. During the Liturgy we are invited to “come and see” Jesus. If our faith is not rooted in a true and personal relationship with Jesus as Lord, then doing the “externals” of worship (prayers, communion, singing, etc.), seem to be enough—as long as we “have done what is right.” The heart, like that of Samuel, hears the invitation of Jesus and says, “yes” to it. This affirmation of Jesus as Lord brings about a new way of living. And that affirmation certainly invites us to a new way of worship. At each Mass, we hear the words of St. John the Baptist. As the priest holds up the Host and Chalice, he proclaims: “Behold the Lamb of God.” When we are awake to Jesus, the words take on an even greater meaning. Are we engaged at that moment to gaze upon Jesus as the Lamb of God? Hearing, listening, and reacting to the words and gestures at Mass help us to worship more perfectly. Mass becomes not just “doing the words” but rather “living the words.” To be awake to the voice of Jesus that beckons us means we have to not only be willing to listen BUT also to respond. We may be so busy in our lives and outwardly it seems like we are busy and awake. But are our hearts truly awake to the gentle voice of Jesus who speaks His song of love to us? Pick up the Scriptures and hear Jesus’ words. Sit in silence and let His voice resonate in your hearts. In other words, come and see where Jesus stays! In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

Society of St. Vincent de Paul In the Gospel today, Jesus asks “What are you looking for?” Often, we are looking for happiness in very selfish ways, but we find that when we look for ways to make others happy, it is then that we truly become happy. As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering, and you give them reason to believe and to trust. Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support. Church of Saint Mary | 8

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

Student Life: Manhattan Experience Club Kicks Off Inaugural Year with First Trip Fifteen students from St. Mary's High School in the Manhattan Experience Club, their moderator Mrs. Lipani, and faculty member Mrs. Curran recently visited New York City to delight in the Christmas season. Their first stop was Bryant Park, where they enjoyed hot chocolate and snacks while browsing the many retail kiosks. Afterward, they visited Rockefeller Center to see the famous Christmas tree and the stunning Saks Fifth Avenue storefront windows. Lastly, they visited St. Patrick's Cathedral, where they toured the church and lit candles in prayer. Everyone returned tired but in high spirits for Christmas. The Manhattan Experience Club is a new afterschool program that meets to learn about iconic places, both new and old. They research and plan trips to visit landmarks and points of interest in New York City. They plan to embark on four trips this year and are off to a great start. We're excited to hear about their next adventure!

Buddies Team Up to Create Festive Ornaments and Create Special Christmas Memories In December, first-graders from Saint Mary's Elementary School paid a pre-Christmas visit to the Middle School. The students teamed up with their 8th-grade buddies to create festive crafts that were used to decorate the 8th-grade Christmas tree located in Immaculata Hall. It was heartwarming to see the magic of collaboration and the joy of the season through their eyes. We are grateful to Mrs. Janine Mullen for organizing this new Christmas tradition as we prepared for the birth of Jesus. Great job everyone!

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Adoration Prayers during Ordinary Time Prayer to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist

My Lord Jesus Christ, Your Eucharistic presence teaches me how to love as you have loved me. In your great love for me you continue to give yourself, body, blood, soul, and divinity in this sacrament of your love. As I pray here in your Eucharistic presence, enkindle in me the fire of your gospel. Nourish me with your love and compassion, so that I may be your living presence to all I meet. Amen. Prayer of Adoration I adore you Jesus, true God, and true man, present in the holy Eucharist, kneeling before you and united in spirit with all the faithful on earth and all the saints in heaven. In gratitude for so great a blessing, I love you with all my heart, for you are worthy of all praise and adoration. Lord Jesus Christ, may I never offend you with my lack of love. May your Eucharistic presence refresh me in body and soul. Mary, Mother of the Eucharistic Lord, pray for me and obtain for me a greater love for Jesus. Amen. Going Forth Lord Jesus Christ, I have spent this time of adoration and prayer in your Eucharistic presence. Fill my life with love, joy, peace, and kindness. Transform me by the power of the Holy Spirit into a living image of your compassionate presence. May I go forth from this hour of adoration and prayer to be your hands, feet, and heart to all those I meet. Risen Jesus, may I be surrounded by the radiance of your love. Amen.
