From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“Do whatever He tells you.” (John 2:5) It amazes me that many of our Christian sisters and brothers cannot see in Sacred Scripture the role that Mary, Our Blessed Mother, plays in salvation history. St. Luke’s Gospel tells us “that every generation will call her blessed.” Today, at the Wedding Feast of Cana, which begins Jesus’ public ministry, there is Mary, right in their midst. She is present with a mother’s heart. She sees that the wine will run out and that it will cause embarrassment and pain for the bridal couple and their families. So Mary brings the problem to her Son, Jesus. Mary gives us those most important words, words that define her ministry for all generations. She tells the wine steward to “Do whatever He tells you.” Jesus is propelled into His own ministry by the prompting of His Mother. As a child of the Mosaic Law, Jesus would have, of course, been not only obedient, but also open to His Mother’s wisdom. So here we have Mary, the handmaid of the Lord, continuing the work that the Father gave her at the Annunciation. This story is not only important to the bridal couple at today’s wedding, but to all of us for all eternity. Mary says to us what she said to the steward, “Do whatever He tells you.” This is Mary’s role; she shows us Jesus and encourages us to discover Him. As a mother, she would have known Him intimately. That intimacy came about through her relationship with Him. A relationship of freely giving herself to Him. The same must be true for us. Like Mary, our relationship with Jesus deepens when we are willing to give ourselves to Him. To know Him through reading the Bible and a prayer life that is centered in Him. Mary’s life of faithfulness is a model for us. She gave her life in service and used her gifts for the glory of God. In our second reading today, St. Paul reminds us “that there are many gifts but one Spirit.” A wonderful way for us to grow closer to Jesus is to do what Our Lady did. She discovered her gift, a mother’s heart, and used it as a means of holiness. It is this holiness that drew her closer to Jesus. We all have been gifted, not all the same surely, but all of importance and needed to make the Body of Christ whole. The difficulty can be two-fold. First, discovering what that gift is and secondly, accepting that it is important. We may think that what God has asked us to do or gifted us with is not very important to the working of the Kingdom. We should never downplay what we have to offer. If it is our gift and it has been given to us by God, then the Father has a plan for it. Being open to the plan will help in accepting the beauty of the gifts given to each of us. We are special and what we have to offer is important. Mary teaches us that. Learn from her maternal love. She wants to show you her Son. I continue to encourage you to pray for those who may be away from worship...let the power of the Holy Spirit touch them. Let all of us take advantage of the Mercy of God that is offered in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). Catholic Schools Week begins on January 30th and continues until February 4th. I encourage you to consider the wonderful blessing of a Catholic education. We not only offer an academically rigorous program, BUT we are also mandated to teach and preach Jesus Christ. Please join us for the Open House on Sunday, January 30th, for both of our Schools and see what wonderful things The Schools of St. Mary’s have to offer. It is an investment for the future of your child. Please see the bulletin for further details. In Jesus, Fr. Bob

Stewards of God’s Gifts In today’s Gospel, Jesus and Mary attend a wedding. When the wine ran out, Mary interceded to Jesus on the couple’s behalf to re-fill the wine. Living Stewardship (Pillar of Prayer): As Mary interceded for the newlyweds, let us ask her to intercede for us as well. This week pray extra Hail Marys and ask her for the wisdom and courage to “do whatever He tells you.”

Reflections on the Creed by Fr. Dominik Wegiel “And Rose again on the Third Day” If Jesus did not rise from the dead, then our faith is empty. St. Paul writes, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins” (1 Cor 15:17). Those are striking words to any reader. Last week, I wrote about the death and crucifixion of Christ. It is an image that we see in every Church and Catholic home. However, at the center of Christianity is the good news! Jesus has risen from the dead. Yet, so much of our contemporary world and even theology have attempted to reduce the resurrection to myth and symbol. Bishop Barron writes, “To be fair, the de-literalizing tendency, found in both the ancient Gnostics and in too much contemporary theology, is, in a way, understandable, for this proposition has always been, to put it mildly, hard to believe” (Barron, 103). It is the responsibility of every Catholic to retell and reclaim to each generation the Resurrection of Christ. The Apostles did not preach about a symbol, but about a living encounter with the Risen Christ. We read in John’s Gospel, “Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ because they knew it was the Lord” (John 21:12). What ghost without a body would ask to share breakfast with them? What glorified and transformed deity would be easily and casually recognized by his disciples? Ancient people might have been pre-scientific, but they were not foolish. Ancient people, as well as modern people, knew quite well that dead people tend to stay dead. Even the educated Athenian crowd balked at St. Paul’s proclamation of Christ’s Resurrection. If the Resurrection was simply a symbol, then why is the story called good news? What’s so good about symbols? How does a symbol radically change life for me and for the whole world? This gets at the heart of the Apostles’ claim; the Resurrection is an objective proclamation. It really happened. This is why the Resurrection is good news, because it is not a symbol, but rather it relays the greatest message ever told that death is not the end, God has redeemed humanity. Bishop Barron writes, “The Resurrection was vivid proof that Jesus was indeed the Messiah of Israel, the culmination of the story of salvation. He was the fulfillment of covenant, temple, prophecy, and Torah—all of the greatest institutions of Israel” (Barron, 109). Jesus is the answer to Man’s original sin in the garden. Jesus is the answer to prophet’s longing for Israel’s fulfillment. Jesus is the answer to all the sacrifices of the Temple. Jesus is the definitive king where not even death can touch him. This is why the story of Jesus is called the Gospel, the good news. Bishop Barron writes about the encounter between Jesus and his followers, “When Jesus appeared alive again to those who had betrayed, denied, and abandoned him at his moment of greatest need, he did indeed show his wounds… However, he then uttered not a world of condemnation… but rather the word shalom (peace)” (Barron, 109). It is faith that assures us that even if crucifixion and pain is our destiny, it is the peace of Jesus that has the final word.
Church of Saint Mary | 12
Reflections on the Creed (con’t.) “He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead” The final word and the Resurrection bring forth final judgment. We don’t like judgment; it strikes a sense of fear and trembling. Many tend to label Jesus as the model of inclusivity and non-judgmentalism. However, judgment is strongly embedded in Jesus’ own words. He says in the Gospel of Matthew, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). Again, in Chapter 19: “I say to you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God” (Matthew 19:24). Often people state, who are you to judge me? However, we are totally fascinated and captivated by shows like Judge Judy, Hell’s Kitchen, and America’s Got Talent which are all about judgment and excellence. There is a part of being human that desires perfection and correction. However, we should not, by any means, compare the Final Judgement to reality TV. Rather it is analogous to revealing that there is within us a longing. St Paul writes, “We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now” (Romans 8:22). Open any newspaper or cable news channel and we quickly find that the world is a deeply unjust place. Human history, in fact, only deepens and verifies this fact. Bishop Barron writes, “No matter how righteous a political leader or activist might be, she is incapable of responding adequately to all the moral outrages committed within her jurisdiction” (Barron, 126). There is hope that the final judgment will bring the final correction to the great injustices of human history. Yet, we shouldn’t believe that God’s justice is blind anger or a twisted vengeance. Rather, God’s judgment takes on the form of mercy. Jesus says on the Cross, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). None of us can stand before Jesus as being equal in merit or virtue. Rather we stand knowing our imperfections as a people who thirst for forgiveness. Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). We come to Jesus asking for mercy, and it is the mercy of God that we are able to rest with him. God’s judgment is not harsh, but a perfect reflection of his love which reveals that all the pain and injustice here will be corrected and, in the end, we will find peace.

This past week, Mr. Joe Valentine (Grade 6 Catechist) shared the prayerful teaching of St. Benedict as part of catechism on the Ten Commandments. A long time volunteer, his online classes always include wonderful visuals that bring the joy of our Catholic faith to life. St. Benedict devoted his life entirely to God, teaching followers to discover the spiritual path by the light of Christ. Without the Dialogues of St. Gregory the Great, the “man of holy life, Benedict by name, and the benediction of God upon him” would have remained hidden. However, St. Benedict would have no issue with this outcome. For three years he lived in solitude in an obscure cave, embracing the ascetic life as a hermit. It is only after he is discovered that St. Benedict must part from his solitary life to re-enter the world as a living spiritual compass pointing to Christ. Outside the books of Scripture, no other early text on personal sanctification was copied in the Middle Ages as much as the Rule of St. Benedict. Compiled from the pure, the simple, yet sublime maxims of the sacred Gospel, the voice of Benedict in the Rule has resounded unceasingly in every nation of the Western Christian world, serving as a light to innumerable souls. St. Benedict - Pray for Us - Mrs. Granieri

Retrouvaille Weekend You Can Help Heal Your Marriage Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? The Retrouvaille Program is for married couples facing difficult challenges in their relationships. It is primarily a practical program to improve communication, build stronger marriages and help couples reconnect. Presenters are not trained marriages counselors, but rather couples sharing their personal stories of marital struggles and the tools they used to rediscover their love.

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
