From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17) During this Liturgical Year, Cycle B, our Gospel readings will be taken primarily from St. Mark’s account of the life of Jesus. Mark focuses on Jesus’ identity. He provides a summary of Jesus’ ministry and presents Him as a preacher, one of his favorite images for Christ, along with teacher and exorcist. In St. Mark’ Gospel, people don’t seem to understand who Jesus is and what is important about his message. Even Jesus’ disciples don’t comprehend who Jesus is. Mark focuses his Gospel on proclaiming Jesus Christ, the Son of God. He sees Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s promise. A promise of forgiveness and hope. We see this promise expressed in our Old Testament reading through the prophet Jonah, when God relents and does not destroy Nineveh. St. Mark is the shortest of the Gospels and it is almost as if he is so excited to preach the ministry of Jesus that he wants his listeners to hear the end of the story. Today we hear about the call of some of the Disciples. They are working as fishermen. Jesus passes them and offers an invitation, “Come, follow me.” There must have been something about Jesus that they left their nets and followed Jesus. I think, at some point earlier, they must have heard Jesus preach and found truth in His message. We know the Scriptures report that many people commented on the “authority” by which Jesus preached. I don’t think that authority was power, but the fact that Jesus knows who He is and preached because He believed. The invitation for us to follow Jesus is to embrace His vision for the world and especially for our lives. For us to give of ourselves to Jesus, we have to experience that “authority” by which Jesus preaches. His way is one that first willingly opens the heart to the ways of the Kingdom of God. As we know, the difficult part of living as Children of the Kingdom is that we need to THINK and reflect on our actions. The way of Jesus is not always black and white, but rather to embrace and struggle with the gray areas. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council speak of conscience formed in the mind and heart of Jesus. For Jesus, love becomes the operative force by which all life should be lived. Not love as portrayed in the media...that soft gushy feeling...but rather the power of God. Love is action, concern, and creating a new world. How we do that will depend on how well we have heard the invitation of Jesus to “Come, follow me.” So Jesus, the preacher, announces a call and invites us to respond by a new way of thinking and acting. He doesn’t spell it out in detail to His first followers, or us, what He expects of them. He doesn’t hand them a rulebook explaining how they are to behave. Instead, He comes announcing a new time and invites them to follow and trust Him. We don’t have a roadmap into the future, but we follow Jesus who leads us there. With Jesus, now is always a time of fulfillment. Last Sunday, Jesus invited His listeners to “come and see where I stay.” This week, St. Mark invites us, after knowing this Jesus, to “come, follow me.” To know the mind of Jesus who we hear and follow, we must first know about Him and, of course, we turn first to Sacred Scripture and the teaching of the Church. The Bible, as God’s very word, reveals to us this vision of the Kingdom. So again, I encourage you to read the Scriptures and fall in love with Jesus more deeply. You will never regret it. The daily Scriptures can be found in our bulletin and on our website. So many Catholic websites are available to assist us in this prayerful endeavor. Google around. For those who are uncomfortable with the internet I also recommend the monthly magazine “Magnificat.” This publication contains the daily and Sunday readings; short reflections on the readings; biographies of the saints; feast days; all the prayers for Mass, and much more. It may be worth looking into. This Sunday, January 21st, we will hold our Blood Drive in the Marian Room from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. I encourage all those who are able to support this life-giving donation. New York State is always in great need of blood. Please consider giving. In Jesus, Fr. Bob The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time | January 21, 2024

Second Collection Next Weekend for The Church in Need The monies collected at this time will be shared among three areas of the world where there is particular need for help: Church in Central and Eastern Europe - this collection supports the Church in more than 25 countries that struggle to recover from former communist rule. It also aids communities throughout the region that are affected by the war in Ukraine. Funds support pastoral care, catechesis, renovations, and seminary formation. Your support restores the Church and builds the future in this region. The Church in Latin America - For many in Latin America and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, difficult rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers all present obstacles to practicing the faith. Your support for the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other programs to share our Catholic faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. The Church in Africa – The Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa supports pastoral projects to build the capacity of the Church and foster lasting peace and reconciliation across a continent often marked by division and tension. Although the Church in Africa is growing, many still lack access to basic resources and pastoral care. Thank you for your generosity.

Respect Life Ministry Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children In the United States, January 22nd has been designated a particular day of prayer and penance — the “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children.” In addition to the special prayers of that day’s Mass, as individuals, we can observe the day through penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or almsgiving. Perhaps fasting from a meal, or offering some other sacrifice or act of penance for this intention, or by prayer such as the following [from RespectLife.org/day-7] Father and maker of all, you adorn all creation with splendor and beauty, and fashion human lives in your image and likeness. Awaken in every heart reverence for the work of your hands, and renew among your people a readiness to nurture and sustain your precious gift of life. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen “A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer.” - Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium vitae For more information about St. Mary’s Respect Life Ministry, email RespectLife@StMary.ws The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time | January 21, 2024

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

SMHS: Students Making the Grade with Honors It’s hard to believe that the first quarter of the academic year is done and in the books at St. Mary’s High School. In the weeks leading up to Christmas break, students were not only waiting in joyful anticipation to celebrate the birth of Jesus – they were celebrating academic achievements with one another. As a new tradition, students who achieved first and second honors for the marking period were acknowledged during the Monday morning school-wide assembly. Principal Gerard J. Buckley presented each student with a certificate of achievement, and all recipients were celebrated by their classmates. We are proud of these students who made the grades with honors during the first marking period! Congratulations and continued success, Gaels!

Religious Education Dear St. Mary’s Family, The start of a new year brings the opportunity to reflect on ways to deepen our relationship with Christ. “I am the vine, you are the branches.” On these words of Jesus which describe our union with Him, the whole sacred teaching of the Mystical Body of Christ is founded. Through weekly catechism, students learn how we are all being incorporated in Christ, who nourishes us the way the vine makes fruitful the branches which are joined to it. It is a blessing to strengthen every student’s desire to discover how to say yes to Christ’s invitation to “abide in Him.” We are so grateful to St. Mary Catechists who continue to share the teachings of our Catholic faith with much love and commitment. With the arrival of winter’s snow, the help of our traffic safety and control volunteers becomes especially crucial to carrying out our program. Thank you all for your dedication and generous giving of time. May God’s grace fill us with his divine love, Mrs. Granieri

An Adoration Prayer

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

Canticle — Isaiah 12:1-6

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.

Joy of God’s ransomed people

Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.

If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink (John 7:37) I give you thanks, O Lord; though you have been angry with me, your anger has abated, and you have consoled me.

We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.

God indeed is my savior; I am confident and unafraid. My strength and my courage is the Lord, and he has been my savior.

In Session with Dr. Patricia Pitta Forget Making Resolutions: Make Positive Intentions The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. (Psalm 28:7) In the New Year, people make and break their resolutions quite rapidly. Only 9% keep their resolutions for one year. By mid-February, 80% of people break their resolutions. Most resolutions revolve around weight loss, doing exercise, and improving mental health. Quite important goals! The issue is that the resolutions are based on starting a New Year with the idea of hope and wishes guiding you and not a plan based on positive intentions. When you make positive intentions, they are informed by love, creativity, kindness, appreciation, openness and receptivity to make changes. So, before you set a resolution, your mind and body need to be ready to receive the hope and desire included in your positive intention(s). You want to eat less, drink less, … and do more … For the sake of ability to relate to the topic, I will pick that you want to make changes in the way you eat and drink. You need to ready yourself through preparing your mind, body, and kitchen to having the appropriate foods and drinks available. You need to place love in your mind and body instead of overeating and drinking too much. There is no better way to do that than preparing yourself for change through praying to the Holy Spirit for guidance regarding your intentions. HE will guide your actions and thoughts in the process of

change. Showing love towards yourself is setting the appropriate surroundings that will help you succeed and thrive. Before you eat, pray to the Holy Spirit and ask, “Is this food or substance good for me?” It can be that simple. If you get the answer, “No,” then do something else and give yourself a chance to pick a healthier item or not partake at that moment. You have heard the statement, “think before you act.” Give yourself a chance to think before you act. What we put in our mouth needs to become intentional, not just a reaction. Another important aspect of following through on an intention is to become disciplined in your thoughts around your intention. Set a plan you can follow. Make your intention simple. For example, I know it is important for me to get healthy. Practice that thought, believe that thought, pray on the intention. When you feel you have internalized this intention, then set your resolutions with a plan. If you want to lose weight, get rid of the problematic foods in your pantry, or give them to someone who can eat those foods. Shop for appropriate foods. Set up food intake menus for you to follow. Write down everything you eat before you eat it. And, before you choose your food or eat it, pray to the Holy Spirit to help you chose the best selections to fulfill your intentions and be successful with your resolutions. It is essential that your resolutions be realistic. That means that they are attainable. Surrender to loving yourself by following through and giving yourself that special gift of completion. If you find yourself not following through, forgive yourself and start anew.

requires you to find ways to deal with the old desires through finding the strength, resolve and reasoning that you will change your thoughts and behaviors and be loving and positive to yourself. Yes, it is all about how you will treat yourself. Love yourself as God loves you, with your whole heart, mind, and being. Treat yourself as special. If you are going to a special event, you prepare what you will wear. Prepare for change by making a positive intention, pray to the Holy Spirit, create a welldefined plan followed by action with love, discipline, and care for yourself by eating and drinking that which is healthy for you. Whatever behavior you want to change, use these principles, and don’t give up! If your eating and drinking behaviors are driven by feelings of anxiety, seek psychological help. Research indicates that over 50% of the population at some time in their life experiences mental health concerns. There is a saying, “Consult a psychologist, the outcome is a better life.” Below is a prayer for change. Keep it in your pocket and say it before you choose the food or drink you want. Prayer for change: As I think about the changes I want to make, I pray to you, my dear Lord, for strength and guidance and to the Holy Spirit for direction to lead me on a path to change that will make me healthier. My changes will affect everyone I touch with love and strength in your Name. Amen.
