From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“I know who you are…” (Mark 1:24) As Jesus begins His public ministry, He jumps right into the work of the Kingdom. In our Gospel today unclean spirits or the Evil One recognize Jesus. They hear the voice of Jesus and become afraid and ask if He is there to destroy them. What I found so interesting about this quote is how quick the Evil Spirits recognized Jesus. As soon as they heard His voice, they knew who it was. And for them it brought on fear. So the question for us is how quickly are we able to distinguish the voice of Jesus in the midst of all the voices that clamor for our attention. This is not an easy question to answer, certainly, but it is one we need to ask ourselves. In order to have a deep abiding connection to Jesus, that personal relationship with Him, we have to be willing to put in the time. Giving of time may/can be what puts us off or makes us a bit nervous in the journey of creating or deepening a relationship with Jesus. Like any relationship, our one with the Lord must contain a speaking to and also a listening. Again, like any relationship, it is built over time. Think about the human relationships in your own life. They did not happen overnight, but took precious time to develop, grow, and deepen. This relationship to Jesus, as we know, is accomplished through prayer and the time we give to that silence. In order to “know the Lord” and to hear His whisper, we must be willing to turn down the volume of the world. This means separating ourselves at times from the many voices that pull us in so many directions and being still. In that silence, Jesus’ voice can begin to be discerned. The avenues that can create the atmosphere by which we can hear the voice of Jesus are as varied as our human needs. The teachings of the Church and Encyclicals of the Popes and bishops challenge us to recognize Jesus in our midst. Certainly prayer forms like the Rosary can help us meditate on the Life of Jesus through our Lady. This has been a strong and powerful tool throughout the ages. Reading Sacred Scripture and coming to know the Word of God enlivens the promise of God within us. As we know, the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council tell us that Jesus is made present in the proclamation of the Word. To pray the Scriptures is a bit different from simply reading the Word. For the Word to speak, it should be meditated upon. Take a few minutes to center yourself, pray for inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and, as you read, STOP…ask the Lord what is He trying to say to you. Meditating or praying the Scriptures is not a race to run quickly but a quiet sitting with the Lord. Probably the most important way of hearing the ice of Jesus is spending time before the Blessed Sacrament. There in the tabernacle is the One who we seek to know. St. John Vianney was once asked what does Jesus do in the tabernacle. He responded, “He waits for you to come to Him!” Isn’t that a beautiful thought! I am always so touched when I come into the church and see people kneeling in silent prayer before Jesus. Come sit with Him…He is waiting for you. These three suggestions certainly do not exhaust the possibilities; they are rather given as some time-tried examples. There is no clear-cut way to pray or to deepen a relationship with Jesus. It is a varied as we are because Jesus is not a thing or a system, but a person. He is the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. Like Jesus, who jumps in to do the work of the Kingdom, so too must we to know His voice. Seek Him so you may find Him and recognize His voice in your own life. As you know, we have just finished Pro-Life week as a Church. I am very grateful to the parishioners and students from our Elementary and High School who participated in the virtual pro-life activities and prayer. Their presence, like so many others from around our nation, gave a voice for the voiceless unborn. I would like to thank all the members of our Respect Life Committee, under the direction of Catherine Dillon, and all those in the School Community who work to protect the unborn. In Jesus, Fr. Bob The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time | January 28, 2024

Religious Education Dear St. Mary’s Family, It is always a blessing to attend classes as Catechists are teaching the Word. Students in Second grade are learning about the joy and peace received in the sacrament of First Penance. Grade Six is continuing their journey through God’s Laws given in the Ten Commandments. Carrying out this holy mission completely rests on the light and power of faith. Faith comes to us through Christ who draws his beloved to love Him and our heavenly Father. The Holy Spirit helps us to understand the beautiful meaning of our Lord’s divine teaching and ways to bring it to life in our words and deeds. We are so grateful to Catechists entrusted with the apostolic task of sharing and preserving Christ’s teaching to our faithful student community. Blessings, Mrs. Granieri

Cookie Co-Op Organized by Sophie Franchetti Sophie Franchetti’s and Delaney Solon’s goal is a simple one but a noble one…to spread cheer to deserving people within our community, most who suffer with food insecurity. Homemade cookies are prepared by Manhasset student volunteers and are donated to the local food pantries by these high schoolers weekly. Good Samaritan House is one of the lucky beneficiaries of this generosity. Their efforts certainly bring a little joy and a little (or a lot of ) sweetness to those who receive! Well done, Sophie and Delaney, and all those who bake with the needy in mind! We are grateful for your time and service!

Society of St. Vincent de Paul In the Gospel today we read that because Jesus spoke with authority his reputation spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. As his disciples, we can also speak with authority when we put our faith into actions by helping the poor and suffering. Have you considered answering the call to serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Rosary Society Our Mission Statement: The Rosary Society fosters devotion to Mary through prayer and good works for causes that would be dear to her heart Invest 20 minutes of your day to pray the Rosary, and see the difference it will make in your life. Friday, February 2nd - Feast of the Presentation of the Lord The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple celebrates an early event in the life of Jesus. It is also the fourth Joyful Mystery of the Rosary. According to the Gospel of St. Luke, Mary and Joseph took baby Jesus to the temple forty days after his birth to complete Mary’s ritual purification after childbirth and perform the redemption of the firstborn, following the law of Moses.

Next Saturday, February 3rd, is First Saturday. The devotion will take place after the 9:00 AM Mass. The Essential Elements of the Devotion are: 1. Go to confession (Can be within 8 days before or after the First Saturday) 2. Receive Holy Communion 3. Pray five decades of the Rosary 4. Keep Our Lady company for 15 minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary

Feast of St. Blaise Saturday, February 3rd Throats will be blessed here at St. Mary’s after the 9:00 AM Mass.

Respect Life Ministry How Do We Express Radical Solidarity? This year’s national Respect Life theme is “Radical Solidarity.” From the letter introducing the theme, Bishop Burbidge of the USCCB wrote: The most immediate way to save babies and mothers from abortion is to thoroughly surround mothers in need with lifegiving support and personal accompaniment. This is radical solidarity. St. John Paul II first defined “radical solidarity” in this way: “In firmly rejecting ‘pro-choice’ it is necessary to become courageously ‘pro woman,’ promoting a choice that is truly in favor of women. … The only honest stance, in these cases, is that of radical solidarity with the woman. It is not right to leave her alone.” Being in radical solidarity with women who are pregnant or raising children in difficult circumstances means putting our love for them into action and putting their needs before our own. Pope Francis reminds us that solidarity “refers to something more than a few sporadic acts of generosity. It presumes the creation of a new mindset,” a transformation within our own hearts. This new mindset requires that we come alongside vulnerable mothers in profound friendship, compassion, and support for both them and their preborn children. It means addressing the fundamental challenges that lead an expectant mother to believe she is unable to welcome the child God has entrusted to her.

Walking With Moms is a nationwide program designed to provide assistance at the local level. For more information, visit WalkingWithMoms.com, or email St. Mary’s Respect Life Ministry. Our Blood Drive was a great success thanks to everyone who helped us in advance, the staff and volunteers, and of course, the generous parishioners and friends who came out in the bitter cold to donate. We collected 86 units of blood, surpassing our goal of 70 units! We are grateful to everyone who contributed to this life saving mission.
