From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“Overjoyed...they prostrated themselves and did Him homage.” (Matthew 2:10-11) The Feast of the Epiphany is the continuation of the plan of God for the salvation of the world. On Christmas day, the message of the birth of the Messiah, Jesus, was first revealed to the shepherds. Those shepherds represent the forgotten and lost children of the House of Israel. Now the Magi, or Astrologers, come to do homage to the Christ Child. They have traveled from afar and have gone through difficult moments to seek and find the Savior. Now salvation is offered, not just to the children of Israel, but to all the world, Jew and Gentile. The Magi sought Jesus and would not stop until they found Him. They left all they knew and that which was comfortable to go on a journey that took them to a faraway place. They did not know what they would encounter, yet faith drew them to seek and gaze upon the Newborn King, even for just a moment. What a great metaphor for each of us. Our faith calls us to seek Jesus each and every day. To see, sense and feel His loving presence - a presence that beckons and invites us to the call of continuing conversion. In this New Year of God’s grace, the Magi remind us that we are called to that journey, to leave behind our old lives, and seek him anew. This Jesus beckons us to follow Him, not from a light of a star in the heavens, but rather through His eternal and life-giving Word. That same Jesus calls us to this holy and venerable altar to receive the most sacred Body and Blood of the newborn and eternal King. Come, my brothers and sisters; do not be afraid to follow Jesus in His path of peace. May we seek Jesus each day and embrace the wisdom that I have seen on bumper stickers which say, “Wise men still seek Him.”
I would like to thank all those parishioners who sent the priests cards, gifts, wine and food for Christmas. They were greatly appreciated. As many of you may have heard, Fr. Jude’s bishop has called him home. Fr. Jude will be departing on January 31st of this year. There will be an opportunity for us, as a community, to thank Fr. Jude for his service and dedication to our parish. I will keep you informed as the plans unfold. Fr. Collins Yeboah will be staying with us for a little while. Fr. Collins will arrive around January 4th. Please welcome Fr. Collins, as you do so beautifully, all those who visit us.
I pray that your New Year will be filled with the joy of Jesus, health, faith and peace. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

IMPORTANT UPDATE to NEW YORK STATE MASK MANDATE The Governor of New York State has included houses of worship in her recent directives. Therefore, since the Church does not require parishioners to present proof of vaccination in order to worship God, we ask that all parishioners (two years of age and older) comply with the requirement to wear masks when participating in any activities on parish grounds. This State requirement is currently in effect through January 15, 2022. We will continue to adapt accordingly as new information becomes available. Your patience and Christian charity towards one another during this difficult time is appreciated.

Reflections on the Creed by Fr. Dominik Wegiel The Son of Man The most popular title Jesus used to refer to Himself was the Son of Man. In the Creed, we state, “For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven.” During this Christmas season, we are asked to reflect more deeply on the mystery of the Incarnation. Why did God become man? The Creed answers that it was for our salvation. An interesting debate in the Medieval Period speculated whether the Son of God would have become incarnate if we had never sinned? St. Thomas Aquinas argued that the Incarnation was a response to sin. Duns Scotus argued that the Incarnation would have occurred in order to bring creation to its fullest perfection. Bishop Barron writes, “We have, in point of fact, sinned, and therefore in order to bring his creation to its perfection, God has to deal with the distortions of sin, but his ultimate purpose far surpasses this curative move” (Barron, 61). Salvation in Greek is soteria which means not just healing of the wound but the full elevation, and perfection of the human person (Barron, 61). God does not simply desire us to survive through life, but to thrive through the power of his grace. The next line of the Creed states, “and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary.” The Incarnation is the intimate bridge between God and humanity. This occurs through the power of the Holy Spirit and the freedom of Mary to say yes. Many skeptics have reduced the virgin birth to another mythic trope. However, Bishop Barron argues that the similarity between the mythic tradition and the Gospel are only superficially similar. There is a strange uniqueness to the birth of Christ. Bishop Barron writes, “In almost all the tales of the birth of divine children from virgin mothers, the pregnancy happens through the violent rape of the human mother by a divine father. There is none of this in the Gospel narratives” (Barron, 65). In fact, the Gospel displays just the opposite. The Incarnation occurs through a simple and extraordinary dialogue between the Angel Gabriel and Mary in which she says “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). The second argument is that Luke provides the reader with a historical and geographical context. Luke writes, “A decree went out from Emperor Augustus” and “was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria” (Luke 2:1-2). Most mythical accounts do not provide details about the current Emperor or governor, because they are not historical. Luke wants to convey both the divine and human reality of Jesus precisely because Jesus is both God and man, transcendent and historical. Jesus’ humanity is the icon, the image of the invisible God. Bishop Barron writes, “When Nicaea speaks of God ‘becoming’ human, therefore it means that God the Son took to himself a human nature—which means a fully constituted human manner of being—in order to use it as an icon of his presence and action” (Barron, 68). We get a glimpse of this reality in the Transfiguration and Resurrection of Christ when his humanity radiates the divine light. Jesus is not two separate beings nor simply a moral human teacher. He is both divine and human. A famous formula used by both the Eastern and Western traditions of Christianity states, “God became man that man might become God.” This does not mean that somehow, we will be absorbed into the divine being and our personal identity become lost. Rather, it is by God’s grace that our wounded humanity is mended and elevated. Our identity is not lost, but rather made whole. To be “divinized” is about becoming fully human because humanity is made in the image and likeness of God. The image of humanity is perfected through Jesus Christ. The divinity of Christ allows us to become icons of God’s love and to become truly ourselves. Bishop Barron writes, “There is, frankly, no humanism, either ancient or modern, more dramatic and thoroughgoing than orthodox Christianity, which envisions not simply moral achievement or political stability or economic advantage or psychological well-being as the goal of human life, but rather divinization” (Barron, 71). January 1 - Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God The feast is a celebration of Mary’s motherhood of Jesus. The title “Mother of God” is a western derivation from the Greek Theotokos, which means “God-bearer.” On this day, we are reminded of the role that the Blessed Virgin played in the plan of our salvation. Through the Holy Spirit, God the Father prepared Mary to be the dwelling place where His Son and His Spirit could dwell among men. Christ’s birth was made possible by Mary’s fiat, or sanctioning of God’s plan with her words, “Be it done to me according to thy word.” Calling Mary “Mother of God” is the highest honor we can give to her. Just as Christmas honors Jesus as the “Prince of Peace,” the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, honors Mary as the “Queen of Peace.” New Year’s Day is also designated as the “World Day of Peace,” further acknowledging the role of Mary in our hearts and in our world. God our Father, may we always profit by the prayers of the Virgin Mother Mary, for you bring us life and salvation through Jesus Christ her Son who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Blessing of the Home and Household on Epiphany The traditional date of Epiphany is January 6, but in the United States, it is celebrated on the Sunday between January 2 and January 8. When all have gathered, a suitable song may be sung. The leader makes the sign of the cross, and all reply, “Amen.” The leader greets those present in the following words: Let us praise God, who fills our hearts and homes with peace. Blessed be God forever. R/. Blessed be God forever. In the following or similar words, the leader prepares those present for the blessing: The Word became flesh and made his dwelling place among us. It is Christ who enlightens our hearts and homes with his love. May all who enter this home find Christ’s light and love. One of those present or the leader reads a text of Sacred Scripture, for example, Luke 19:1-9: The holy Gospel according to Luke: Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town. Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way.> When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.” And he came down quickly and received him with joy. When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.” The intercessions are then said:
Leader: The Son of God made his home among us. With thanks and praise let us call upon him. R/. Stay with us, Lord. Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, with Mary and Joseph you formed the Holy Family: remain in our home, that we may know you as our guest and honor you as our Head. We pray: R/. Stay with us, Lord. Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, you had no place to lay your head, but in the spirit of poverty accepted the hospitality of your friends: grant that through our help the homeless may obtain proper housing. We pray: R/. Stay with us, Lord. Leader: Lord Jesus Christ, the three kings presented their gifts to you in praise and adoration: grant that those living in this house may use their talents and abilities to your greater glory. We pray: R/. Stay with us, Lord. After the intercessions the leader invites all present to say the Lord’s Prayer. The leader says the prayer of blessing with hands joined: Lord God of heaven and earth, you revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star. Bless this house and all who inhabit it. Fill them (us) with the light of Christ, that their (our) concern for others may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen. The leader concludes the rite by signing himself or herself with the sign of the cross and saying: May Christ Jesus dwell with us, keep us from all harm, and make us one in mind and heart, now and forever. R/. Amen. End the celebration with a suitable song, for example, “O Come, All Ye Faithful” or “We Three Kings.”

Retrouvaille Weekend You Can Help Heal Your Marriage Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? The Retrouvaille Program is for married couples facing difficult challenges in their relationships. It is primarily a practical program to improve communication, build stronger marriages and help couples reconnect. Presenters are not trained marriages counselors, but rather couples sharing their personal stories of marital struggles and the tools they used to rediscover their love.
Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo Diocesan Priest, Oblate of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart Montforte Irpino: 11 January 1899 - Rome: 2 May 1934
O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
For confidential information about the Retrouvaille program, or to register for the upcoming weekend that begins on Friday, January 21, 2022, please visit our website www.helpourmarriage.org or call 1-800470-2230 and you will be connected directly and confidentially to a couple from Long Island/Metro Retrouvaille who can help.
