From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“Overjoyed . . . they prostrated themselves and did Him homage.” (Matthew 2:11) The Feast of the Epiphany is the continuation of the plan of God for the salvation of the world. On Christmas Day, the message of the birth of the Messiah, Jesus, was first revealed to the shepherds. Those shepherds represent the forgotten and lost children of the House of Israel. Now the Magi or astrologers come to do homage to the Christ Child. They have traveled from afar and have gone through difficult moments to seek and find the Savior. Now salvation is offered, not just to the Children of Israel, but also to the entire world, Jew and Gentile. The Magi sought Jesus and would not stop until they found Him. They journeyed a long and difficult way to find their hearts’ desire. This wondrous birth that the oracles had foretold beckoned them to leave their homes and follow the star that lit up the darkened night. The words of Isaiah rang true for the Magi: “Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow.” The three wise men were overcome with joy upon seeing the Christ Child. The difficulty of their journey now made sense and they were filled with joy upon entering that stable. I am sure that the joy of seeing Jesus caused them to forget the hazards of their journey. What a great metaphor for each of us! Our faith calls us to seek Jesus each and every day. To see, sense, and feel His loving presence, we also must journey toward Jesus. To know Him, we have to first seek His presence. A presence that beckons and invites us to the call of continuing conversion. We may not have to journey as far as the three wise men, but a deepening of faith and discovering of Jesus always entails some type of “journey.” That discovering may entail a leaving behind of old ways and embracing a new “light” that guides our lives. The star of Jesus still brightens the night sky. Maybe the “star” in our own lives has dimmed a bit in the midst of the grind of our everyday routine and most especially when faced with illness and death. The Christ Child has grown up; has our faith done the same? So it may mean that we have to reevaluate the gifts we lay at the feet of the newborn King. It may also mean returning home, like the Magi, to rediscover the presence of Jesus in our lives. God is found in any place that still moves us to awe and wonder. His Spirit opens us when we are in the company of faithful people who praise God. Those who support us to seek God’s presence can be that brightened star in each of our lives. It is in those places that we are probably most open to the presence of the guiding star of Jesus. That openness can rekindle that awe and wonder and, like the Magi, we can be overjoyed in discovering the presence of Jesus in our daily journey. So read the Scriptures and hear the promise; pray in silence, asking for the Lord to speak and, most importantly, worship with a heart open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. May we seek Jesus each day and embrace the wisdom that I have seen on bumper stickers which say, “Wise men seek Him still.” Christmas Masses were a joy here at St. Mary’s. I would like to thank all the Knights of Columbus who led the ushers and all those who assisted. A special thanks to our new Director of Music, Daniel Maimone, and our wonderful cantors and choirs who added to the beauty of our Christmas Masses. Thanks to the maintenance staff who did a beautiful job decorating our church. Thanks also to all of our Liturgical ministers: Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Altar Servers and Lectors. I would like to thank all those parishioners who sent cards, gifts, and food to the rectory for Christmas. They were greatly appreciated by all the priests and myself. I am grateful to all those who gave so generously to our Christmas collection and support throughout the year. The Christmas collection and actually all of our collections are so important. They allow us as a parish to continue the Mission of the Gospel. I pray that your New Year will be filled with the Joy of Jesus, health, faith, and peace. Seek Him still! In Jesus, our newborn King, Fr. Bob The Epiphany of the Lord | January 7, 2024

Parish Social Ministry Good Samaritan House sends a huge thank you to the tireless nurses of St. Francis Hospital. Not only do they serve the sick with the work they do daily, they serve the poor around the holidays too! The cardiothoracic ICU nursing team sponsored a family this year, providing a full Christmas for a family with four young children. Thank you, Ms. GarcesaDuque, and your team of nurses for helping to make this family’s Christmas more fun and festive! We also want to thank the generous sales persons at Athleta for teaming up to sponsor a family. A family of four young women was provided with many essentials from Athleta, Gap, and Old Navy. The items donated by this team surely brightened the day and eased the burden of winter for this beautiful family! Good Samaritan House appreciates teaming up with local organizations and companies to ease the burden of food insecurity and clothing insecurity for many of our local families. Thank you many times over to all of these generous donors!

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament God With Us! In choosing to be born with us, God chose to be known by us. He therefore reveals Himself in this way, in order that this great sacrament of His love may not be an occasion for us of great misunderstanding.

Today the Magi find, crying in a manger, the One they have followed as He shone in the sky. Today the Magi see clearly, in swaddling clothes, the One they have long awaited as He lay hidden among the stars. Today the Magi graze in deep wonder at what they see: heaven on earth, earth in heaven, humanity in God, God in humanity; One whom the whole universe cannot contain now enclosed in a tiny body. As they look, they believe and do not question, as their symbolic gifts bear witness: incense for God, gold for a king, myrrh for one who is to die...

Today Christ enters the Jordan to wash away the sin of the world. John himself testifies that this is why he has come: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world...

Today Christ works the first of his signs from heaven by turning water into wine. But water mixed with wine has still to be changed into the sacrament of his blood, so that Christ may offer spiritual drink from the chalice of his body. - St. Peter Chrysologus
