From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“You are my Beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:22) The feast of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christmas season and is another “epiphany” (manifestation) of the Lord. Today’s feast is not a quiet scene in a stable with a few local shepherds from the fields as witnesses or the visit of the Magi. Instead, the baptism is set in a public ritual with lots of people around. The people have acknowledged the darkness of sin in their lives by accepting the baptism of St. John in the Jordan. Jesus enters the same waters and, after His baptism, the Holy Spirit descends upon Him. Jesus is the promised “Chosen One” anticipated by Isaiah; He is the “light for the nations.” St. John tells his listeners that while he baptizes with water, One is coming who will baptize with fire and the Holy Spirit. This fire will, in the power of the Holy Spirit, burn away our sins and “purify” us to be worthy offerings to God. Jesus is declared by the Father as the One who is to come to bring forgiveness to all nations. Isaiah tells us that the Anointed One will come announcing the time of salvation with truth AND gentleness, that even the “bruised reed He will not crush.” Our Savior, whose Birth we have just celebrated, comes in power but also in kindness for all His people. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus’ ministry was that of hope and healing to all people who walked in darkness. Darkness and sin are no longer the lasting power in our world. Our Jesus comes to us that, through His love and compassion, we may embrace the light of His way. Today is a good day for each of us to recall the promises that were either made for us at our baptism or we have made ourselves. Baptism is the radical change in our life when we are forever changed and configured to Jesus. We become part of His Body and, as part of His Body, we share as heirs to all that God promises. This promise doesn’t come to us “without a cost.” The cost is not something we can purchase; it is rather a way of living. While it is certainly true that nothing we can do will ever “earn” us salvation because that is a free gift from God, it is also true that we have to be willing to cooperate with the plan of salvation. That plan consists of our willingness to walk in the light. The light and plan that Jesus has for our lives is living as He did. This is seen most completely by the way we live our lives. Our participation in the sacramental life of the Church, embracing forgiveness and compassion in our relationship with others, and living as He did “not shouting out loud or squelching even the slightest flame” are certain signs that we are living out the promises of our baptism. As St. Paul tells us, we must be willing to “bring the Good News of Peace” to all we meet. These are some of the ways we can judge our own lives to see if we are in conformity to the message of Jesus. Ponder today your own life in light of the power of your baptism. Are there any areas or relationships that need the “fire of the Holy Spirit” to purify you? Are there any times you have not opened yourself to forgiveness? Is your worship of Jesus true and life giving? The wonder of our God is that we don’t have to live in the darkness unless we choose to. We have the forgiveness of Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) to free ourselves of those things that keep our baptism from truly being the power that it was intended. These days of Thanksgiving and Christmas have been busy times for our Outreach and St. Vincent de Paul Conference. We assisted many families for Thanksgiving and Christmas, giving out food cards, food, and toys to those in need. Many thanks to our wonderful and dedicated volunteers at our Outreach Office and St. Vincent de Paul Conference. I am grateful for their work at feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and helping all those in need. In Jesus, Fr. Bob

Rosary Society Our Mission Statement: The Rosary Society fosters devotion to Mary through prayer and good works for causes that would be dear to her heart Invest 20 minutes of your day to pray the Rosary, and see the difference it will make in your life. If you would like the Rosarians to pray for a special intention, please e-mail us at rosarysociety@stmary.ws. FIVE REASONS TO PRAY THE ROSARY This week: #1. The Rosary is the second most powerful prayer in the world. The first, of course, is the Holy Mass. St. Louis de Montfort taught: “When the Holy Rosary is said well, it gives Jesus and Mary more glory and is more meritorious than any other prayer.” St. Pio preached, “Love the Madonna and pray the Rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. All graces given by God pass through the Blessed Mother.” - Living Faith, 2021

Society of St. Vincent de Paul After Jesus was baptized, he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and a voice was heard “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As we give to the poor, we also can hear these same words. As you help those who are suffering, know in your heart the truth of the words “you are my beloved with whom I am well pleased.”

The Baptism of the Lord | January 9, 2022
Religious Education The Mystery of the Holy Trinity is beautifully revealed as Jesus is being baptized. The Spirit descends on Him in the form of a dove, and the voice of God the Father speaks from heaven. The three divine Persons are fully present, actively participating in the baptismal liturgy in a different way. St. John the Baptist shows great humility and understanding of God’s will. In stating “He [Jesus] must increase, but I must decrease,” he receives divine grace promised to those who humble themselves before God. St. John was not disturbed by the growth of Jesus’ following. It was by design, and John was rejoicing about that. By his example, we see the joy experienced when embracing the plan God intends to accomplish for us. Recently, Catechists Mr. Bartul and Mr. Amoruso posed this question to Grade 8 students: “If you were having dinner with Mary, Joseph and Jesus, what help would you ask of them?” In response, students stated they would ask the Holy Family to guide them toward making prudent decisions so as to fulfill God’s wishes for each of them. They would ask for help in finding their unique spiritual vocation. In this new year, may we all hear the Christ-voice directing our path. - Mrs. Granieri A Prayer to Know One’s Vocation: Lord, my God and my loving Father, you have made me to know you, to love you, to serve you, and thereby to find and to fulfill my deepest longings. I know that you are in all things, and that every path can lead me to you. But of them all, there is one especially by which you want me to come to you. Since I will do what you want of me, I pray you, send your Holy Spirit to me: into my mind, to show me what you want of me; into my heart, to give me the determination to do it, and to do it with all my love, with all my mind, and with all of my strength right to the end. Jesus, I trust in you. Amen

Reflections on the Creed by Fr. Dominik Wegiel “For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate” The iconic encounter between Pilate and Jesus is the mystical portrait of God’s kingdom colliding with our world. If there was any classical symbol of the city of man, it was Rome itself. Caesar, whose shadow is casted throughout the Gospel, was the most powerful man in the ancient world. Rome was a city dominated by her lust for power which Caesar embodied through political and military campaigns. While Caesar reigns in a palace, Christ is born in a manger. Christ is portrayed as the anti-Caesar. Bishop Barron writes, “Jesus’ kingdom belongs to the powerless… whereas most kingdoms and nations survive through war… Jesus’ kingdom belongs to those who militate in favor of peace” (Barron, 77). Jesus is the King who ushers in the kingdom of heaven. The light of God’s kingdom is meant to unmask our twisted understanding of human greatness and civilization. Pilate wants to know Jesus’ purpose and Jesus answers, “For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice” (John 18:37) and Pilate responds, “What is truth?” which is an essential modern question. The banner of secularism invokes Pilate’s skepticism. Because what’s the alternative? If Christ indeed is proclaiming “truth” then Pilate has to surrender his Roman identity, politics, and worldview. It is familiar to our current political climate. Our debates have been fixated on power politics which have also involved the rise of fake news. Obsession with power will reduce truth to personal opinion and raise personal opinion to truth. Such relativism will inevitably cause us to doubt any existence of truth. But, as Bishop Barron writes, “When truth appeared in person, all of our lies were exposed, all of our pretensions to spiritual achievement unmasked” (Barron, 82). And what was Pilate’s response to this encounter with truth? Crucifixion.
“He suffered Death and was buried” When humanity encountered truth, we killed him. The death of Jesus is so familiar to us that we hardly grasp its profound meaning. The Jewish people of Jesus’ time were awaiting a Davidic King who would restore a political kingdom. The death of Jesus at the hands of the Romans was a traumatic experience. Yet, early Christians saw the cross as a sign of victory rather than defeat. Bishop Barron writes, “The only way that we can make sense of this is to affirm the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. If the crucified and buried Jesus had simply stayed in his grave, he would have been, like any number of messianic pretenders, promptly forgotten” (Barron, 88). The death of Christ can be understood through the lenses of victor and sacrifice. Victory is the outcome of a great struggle. The Crucifixion is a battleground between Jesus and the powers of the world. The religious and political establishment used their power to invoke crucifixion as a means to win victory over Jesus. The paradox is that their means to victory becomes their own demise. Jesus does not fight fire with fire, but absorbs the forces and darkness of the world. Bishop Barron explains, “There is a good deal of aikido in Jesus’ victorious struggle on the cross: his nonviolence and infinite divine forgiveness effectively undermine wickedness, giving it nothing from which it could draw further energy, absorbing all of its momentum. Thus, in a very real sense, Jesus on the cross ‘takes away the sin of the world’ (John 1:29)” (Barron, 90). The purity of Jesus’ humanity beguiles the forces of darkness and reveals the light of his divine nature.

Reflections on the Creed (con’t.) St. Anselm presents the classical idea that Jesus performs the crucifixion as a bloody sacrifice for our sins. This is a foreign concept to the modern mind because we have long ago abandoned systems of religious sacrifice. It was a common practice among ancient civilizations. The spiritual psychology behind the gesture seems to suggest that whatever is happening to the animal should by right be happening to me. The concept of the scapegoat captures the essence. We sacrifice another person’s reputation as a means to clear our own guilt. Jesus is the ultimate scapegoat who takes on humanity’s guilt and also wipes it away. The Prophet Isaiah states, “He was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed” (Isa 53:4-5). Only Christ could accomplish the sacrifice Why? Bishop Barron writes, “Since the offence of sin belongs to the human race, a human being had to be involved in the payment, but since the offence to the honor of God is infinite, only God could adequately pay it. Therefore, the righteous anger of the Father could be quieted only by the suffering and death of someone who is both God and man” (Barron, 96). The demand of divine justice had to address the weight of sin. The cross is not merely a punishment which scrupulous guilt fears, but a remedy for our wounds. We were like a beautiful pearl that was thrown into a pool of mud, and God, out of his great love, dives into the depths of human corruption to get us out. God is not like a tyrannical father who is “offended” by sin, but rather God wants to eliminate all that prevents us from being fully alive. Bishop Barron summarizes, “The Son of God went to the limits of alienation from God so that even as the worst of sinners runs with all her energy from the Father, she finds herself running into the arms of the Son” (Barron, 98). We were made for God, but to our own detriment, we chose alienation. Out of love, God became man, and Jesus enters the depths of alienation to meet humanity where we are and cries with us, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). From alienation, Jesus embraces death’s kiss and is buried. The death of Christ unveils that there is no corner on earth or in our heart which his light cannot reach because he has entered the darkness and has emerged from the tomb. Ed. The Baptism of the Lord | January 9, 2022
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament INTERCESSIONS
BENEDICTUS (Canticle of Zechariah) - Luke 1: 68-79
Our Redeemer desired to be baptized in the Jordan by John; let us make this prayer to him: Lord, have mercy.
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; He has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty savior, Born of the house of his servant David.
Christ, you made your light shine on us by revealing yourself, grant us the spirit of humble service to all people.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, From the hands of all who hate us.
Christ, you humbled yourself and received baptism from your servant to show us the way of humility, grant us the spirit of humble service to our fellow men.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers And to remember his holy covenant.
Christ, through your baptism you cleansed us of every blemish and made us children of your Father, bestow your spirit of adoption on all who seek you.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, To set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, Holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, For you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation By the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God The dawn from on high shall break upon us,
Christ, through baptism you have consecrated creation and opened the door of repentance to all who prepare for baptism, make us servants of your Gospel in the world. Christ, through your baptism you revealed to us the Holy Trinity when the Father called you his beloved Son and the Holy Spirit came down upon you, renew the spirit of adoption among the royal priesthood of the baptized. Our Father…
To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, And to guide our feet into the way of peace.
COLLECT
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Antiphon: Christ is baptized, the world is made holy; he has taken away our sins. We shall be purified by water and the Holy Spirit.
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church
Almighty ever-living God, who, when Christ had been baptized in the River Jordanand as the Holy Spirit descended upon him, solemnly declared him your beloved Son, grant that your children by adoption, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, may always be well pleasing to you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. May the Lord bless us, protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.
