A Refection by Father Anthony
JESUS, THE CHURCH, AND “THE SHEEP”
In today’s Gospel Reading, the Twelve Apostles return from their frst missionary journey, and the Church invites us to continue refecting on its authority and mission through the Liturgy of the Word.
In the First Reading from the Old Testament, the Prophet Jeremiah reveals that Israel’s leaders, through their godlessness and fanciful teachings, had led God’s people astray and scattered them. However, the prophet assured his listeners that God will send a Shepherd - a King and Son of David - to gather the lost sheep.
Te crowd gathering on the green grass (cf. Mark 6: 39) in today’s Gospel Reading is the start of “the remnant” that Jeremiah, in today’s First Reading, promised would be brought back to “the meadow of Israel.” Te people seem to sense that Jesus is the Lord, the Good Shepherd (cf. John 10: 11), the king they’ve been waiting for (cf. Hosea 3: 1–5).
Jesus, moved to pity, saw the crowd as sheep without a shepherd. In the Old Testament, Moses used this phrase to describe Israel’s need for “a shepherd” to succeed him (cf. Numbers 27:17). And as Moses, in the Old Testament, appointed Joshua as his successor to lead the people of Israel, now, in the New Testament, Jesus appoints the Twelve Apostles to continue shepherding His people here on earth. As chosen disciples, the Twelve were given the authority and mission to guide and lead the Church, just as Moses and Joshua did for Israel.
In His divine wisdom, Jesus foresaw that there were other sheep that did not belong to Israel’s fold but would hear His voice and be joined to the “one fock” of the “one shepherd.” Tis inclusivity, this open invitation, is a fundamental aspect of the Church.
In God’s plan, the Church is to seek out frst the lost sheep of the house of Israel and then to bring all nations into the fold (cf. Acts 13:36; Romans 1:16). In this way, the Church becomes a beacon of hope, welcoming all who seek spiritual nourishment and guidance, regardless of their background or origin.
In today’s Epistle (the 2nd Reading), Paul also refers to the Church as “a new creation,” in which those nations who were once far of from God are joined as “one new person” with the children of Israel. Tis “one new person” refers to the unity and equality of all believers in the Church, regardless of their previous status or nationality. It signifes the Church’s transformative power, bringing diverse individuals together into a unifed body.
As we sing in today’s Responsorial Psalm, through the Church, the Lord, our Good Shepherd, continues to lead people to the verdant pastures of the Kingdom, to the restful waters of Baptism. He anoints with the oil of confrmation and spreads the Eucharistic table before all people, flling their cups to overfowing. Te Church, therefore, is not just a physical entity, but a source of spiritual nourishment and comfort.
J Stewards of God’s Gifts
“Te Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”
Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Prayer: Jesus wants to have a relationship with us. He loves us and wants to communicate with us (which means that we LISTEN as well as talk). Tis week, make a point to pray an extra fve minutes, or read a Scripture verse every day, or learn a new prayer. Build upon your relationship with the Lord.

Friday, July 26th - Memorial of Saints Joachim & Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Saints Anne and Joachim are traditionally known as the parents of the Virgin Mary, as mentioned in some apocryphal writings. St. Anne is the patron saint of women in labor as well as both Brittany (France) and Canada. As the grandparents of Jesus, Saints Anne and Joachim are considered the patron saints of grandparents.
Let us pray:
Saints Anne and Joachim, thank you for your example of faith. Tank you for your wonderful daughter, our spiritual mother, Mary. Tank you for the love of God and the faith you inspire in us. Grandparents of Jesus, pray for us. Amen.
Society of St. Vincent de Paul
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples to “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” Vincent de Paul, a great man of action was also a contemplative. His contemplation of God’s love overfowed into practical love for the poor. Please say a special prayer for the poor and forgotten, as you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Tank you for your continued support.
Good Samaritan House Announces Fall Bereavement Group
A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on September 14, 2024.
The session will run for ten consecutive weeks on Saturdays from 9:30-11:00 AM. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.
The group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling – including non-parishioners and people of other faiths. It should be noted though, St. Mary's bereavement sessions are faith based sessions that at times refer to bible verses or prayers to assist in the healing process.
