Dear Parishioners,

If a student came to me and said that they were writing a book that involved Greek mythology, contemporary politics, theology, history, philosophy, poetry, and, by the way, the main character was the student himself, I would certainly tell him to stop. But it is for this reason that Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy is a masterpiece. Less talented writers would make a mess of Dante’s ambition. Yet, Dante was able to weave all these dense topics through a magnetic and poetic drama of a man who journeys into hell, purgatory, and paradise.

For the next few weeks, I want to share with you my love for Dante’s poem and why he matters today. He is not simply a poet, but also a prophet who uses his imagination to teach us divine truth and to move our hearts to ascend. Dante Alighieri was born on May 21, 1265 in Florence. Dante became heavily involved in Italian politics, especially in the conflict between the Ghibellines and Guelfs. The heart of the political debate was the power struggle between the Pope and German (Holy Roman) Emperors. Dante belonged to the Guelf party, who supported the Pope, but after their victory with the Ghibellines, the Guelf party became divided between the White Guelfs and the Black Guelfs. The division was first based on family lines, but it led to an ideological difference when Pope Boniface VIII attempted to seize political control of Florence. Dante would be a leader within the White Guelfs and they fought for a greater freedom against the pope while the Black Guelfs supported papal control. The Whites took control of the city, but Pope Boniface VIII planned a military occupation and overthrew the White Guelf’s government.

Pope Boniface’s victory would become a major catalyst in Dante’s life because quickly after his victory, Pope Boniface ordered Dante to be exiled from Florence and, in fact, Dante would never step foot in his home city ever again. It might be hard for Americans to understand the humiliation of such an exile because we are all so used to seeing our family or friends constantly move from city to city. This was not the case in medieval times; the city you were born in was your identity. Florence, for Dante, was his whole life, and throughout his poem you can see both the love and anger he has for his city. However, this exile is precisely where Dante would undergo a spiritual transformation from a romantic poet into a prophetic poet.

It is during his exile in Ravenna that Dante would write his epic poem called the Divine Comedy, originally called Commedia. Due to the experience of his political exile, Dante begins to see the deeper meaning of his spiritual exile from God. It is this experience of losing Florence, his home, that he begins to yearn for the heavenly paradise, our true home. But before Dante can reach his true home, he must walk the pilgrimage into Hell and Purgatory. My fellow pilgrims, I invite you to walk with me as we read Dante together and hopefully, by understanding Dante’s own spiritual journey, we too can learn to walk the straight and narrow way in our own pilgrimage to God.

In Christ’s Peace, Fr.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Catholic Prayers for Protection from Evil

We live in a world where temptations and atrocities are visible. That’s why living in fear and anxiety is inevitable. But the Lord, our God, promised us we don’t have to worry for He can protect us at all times. He will always be at our side, and He will never forsake us. However, when anxiety and fear overcome us, prayers can be a powerful tool to put our hearts and minds at ease.

Catholic prayers that you can use for protection from evil:

Let No Evil Befall Us

O God, You are the preserver of men and the keeper of our lives. We commit ourselves to your perfect care on the journey that awaits us. We pray for a safe and promising journey. Give Your angels charge over us to keep us in all our ways. Let no evil befall us, nor any harm come to our dwelling that we leave behind.

Although we are uncertain of what the days may bring, may we be prepared for any event or delay, and greet such with patience and understanding.

Bless us O Lord, that we may complete our journey safely and successfully under Your ever watchful care.

Guard Over Me

Jesus, I will arise. Jesus, do thou accompany me. Jesus, do thou lock my heart into thine and let my body and my soul be commended unto thee. The Lord is crucified. May God guard and protect my senses so that misfortunes may not overcome me. In the name of God, the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer Against Every Evil Spirit of our God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Most Holy Trinity, Immaculate Virgin Mary, angels, archangels, and saints of heaven, descend upon me. Please purify me, Lord, mold me, fill me with yourself, use me. Banish all the forces of evil from me, destroy them, defeat them, so that I can be healthy and do good deeds.

Good Samaritan House is losing one of our valued volunteers who is relocating to Florida. We are looking to find a volunteer who is able to call our homebound and elderly population weekly. The role takes about one hour of time per week and brings some joy to those who are unable to leave their home to socialize with others. The volunteer can work from our office weekly or can place the calls from their own home. If interested, please contact KKosciusko@stmary.ws or at 516-365-2702.

Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.

In the Gospel today we hear Jesus say: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brings peace to those who are overwhelmed with life’s burdens.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. I am tired and upset.

Draw God holding you on his lap while sitting in your favorite rocking chair.

When you are tired and upset, go to God. Talk things over with him. Tell him the whole story. God is a good listener. He has a gentle heart. He will say to you, “I love you. I forgive you.” Then snuggle up with your favorite blanket and take a nap. When you wake up, you will feel much better. Then you will share your love by saying, “May I help you?” friends, and neighbors.

Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo

Diocesan Priest, Oblate of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart

Montforte Irpino: 11 January 1899 - Rome: 2 May 1934

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
