From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.” (John 16:12) Today we celebrate what is probably one of the most difficult and elusive doctrines in our Church. The Doctrine of the Most Blessed Trinity can, at times, not make sense in our rational world. This teaching, as defined by the Church, gets its basis from Sacred Scripture. Jesus often spoke of the unity of Himself and the Father: “The Father and I are one.” Each Person of the Blessed Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — is a distinct reality. We DO NOT worship three gods, but rather ONE GOD in three persons. Each Person of the Blessed Trinity is part of the ONE Godhead. What can confuse us, at times, is that we refer to the Father as God. While He is certainly that, so are the Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is, in reality, a mystery of relationship. In a sense, each Person of the Trinity has a distinct “function and purpose” yet work as one. The Father is the Creator who has prepared the world for the coming of the Redeemer. Throughout the Scriptures, the Hand of the Father has guided, protected and blessed the people He has chosen as His own. In Jesus, the Son, we see the WORD of the Father that takes on flesh and lives in our human world. Yet as much as St. Paul tells us that “Jesus emptied Himself and took the form of a slave,” He, at all times, was fully human and fully God. Jesus has come into the world to be the way of our salvation through His death on the Cross. The Holy Spirit is the power or breath of God that blows through our world and our lives. In the power of the Holy Spirit, we are given the “grace” to profess Jesus as Lord. So we look at each Person of the Trinity and we can see a unity of life but also of “function.” Each works with the other while retaining His own identity and individuality. What we can see is that the relationship is based on love. A love that is not jealous of the others’ work, but finds joy in what they can contribute to make it more profound and powerful. In the power of that self-giving love, we see our own call. As Catholic Christians, we are called to walk in the path of the Trinity. We are invited to use our gifts to continue the work of the Most Holy Trinity. As the Father, Son, and Spirit empty themselves for the good of the other, we are called to use what has been given to us not only for the glory of God, but also for the good of God’s holy people. Our mission is to open our hearts to the needs around us and to be the instruments of the Trinity in our world. Since my arrival, I have tried to open and expose us to many of the charities and missionary works of the Church. Even our second collections, by themselves, are a way of pointing out the importance of each. Love and faith call us to serve, support, and comfort those who come into our lives. The relationship of love that we celebrate today is one that has to be as self-giving as we see lived out in the Trinity. Lived for us by how we love those around us. As we celebrate the Trinity, let us not so much focus on its doctrinal meaning, but rather embrace what that self-giving teaches and means for our own lives. The Bishops of the United States are inviting the Church to participate in a three year Eucharistic Revival beginning next Sunday, June 19th, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. The desire of the bishops is to deepen our belief, understanding, and worship of the Lord Jesus in the Eucharistic Elements. In Jesus, Fr. Bob

New Bereavement Group Seeks Volunteer Facilitators The Parish Social Ministry Office is looking for two volunteers who may feel God’s call to facilitate a Bereavement Group for the parish. Volunteers would be properly trained over a couple of weeks starting in September by Dr. Lou Sabatini. Those being trained would attend a one hour training session and then attend an hour actual bereavement session following the training. Once volunteers are trained, we will hold a bereavement session at St. Mary’s for those who suffer from loneliness and sadness after the loss of their loved-ones. Our bereavement session (running eight weeks, one hour and fifteen minutes per week) could be on any day of the week that works for the facilitators. The facilitators could share the responsibility of the sessions so the time commitment could be a little less. The volunteers do not necessarily have to be people who have suffered the loss of someone close to them, but do have to be individuals who would be able to empathize with those who have. If anyone is interested in volunteering to facilitate this very important session allowing us to build this critical ministry, especially post-COVID, please reach out to Kathleen Kosciusko at kkosciusko@stmary.ws or at 516-365-2705.

Parish Social Ministry Reaches Out to the Elderly and Homebound The Elderly and Homebound Ministry provides a social connection between the parish and the one in need. If you are interested in being contacted by our volunteers, please call the Parish Social Ministry office at 516-365-2705.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul As we celebrate the mystery of the Trinity we also realize the mystery of how much God loves and cares for us each day. Believing in this our lives can then overflow in thanksgiving and praise. If you or someone you know needs assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385 ext. 1125 or SVDP@stmary.ws. If you would like to make a donation, you may use the collection slots at the doors of the church or place an envelope in the regular collection marked “St. Vincent de Paul Society.” For furniture and household donations, please call 516-746-8250 to arrange for a pick up.

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity | June 12, 2022

This year, the celebration of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ on Sunday, June 19th, has great significance. On that day, the Bishops of the United States are calling for a three-year grassroots revival of devotion and belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The initiative is an expression of desire to see a movement of Catholics across the United States, healed, converted, formed, and unified by an encounter with the Lord in the Eucharist. The Eucharistic Procession planned for Sunday, June 19th has been postponed to a later date to be announced.

In Session with Dr. Patricia Pitta The Role of Defenses in Your Life: Finding Safety and Peace Within Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4) Life has so many challenges. Part of being human is to have problems, dilemmas, and stress. The way you navigate these situations will determine the levels of tension, sadness and joy you can experience. As a result of your unique life journey, emotional trauma can be a constant companion unless processed and worked through by experiencing empathy from those who love and care about you whether they be family, friend, neighbor, parishioner or mental health professional. You develop defenses to not feel or to minimize the loss, fear, disappointments, pain, and stress associated with our feelings and life situations. Some of us feel anxiety. We feel anxiety in our chests, stomachs, and backs. Many think that back pain can represent internalized anger and stress. Some people feel like they can’t breathe and feel just choked up. Many others experience stomach pain. Many children experience their feelings in their stomachs. When you feel your feelings in your body, it is called somaticizing. When this happens without being able to talk about your feelings and working them through, you can become physically ill. When you experience feelings you cannot make sense of, can’t handle, or are overwhelmed by, your defenses come in to protect you from your feelings. Anxiety is a higher-level

defense against feeling which means you can still function even though, at times, it is difficult. The other side of anxiety is sadness and depression. For many, depression is more debilitating and people can become frozen, stuck and non-functional. You may run from uncomfortable feelings by enlisting your defenses to protect you, but the bottom line is that you are not protected, and the truth is that you cannot run from your feelings. They live within you. If you become anxious, or have obsessive thoughts, feel depressed, feel physical symptoms set off from internalized feelings, you need to find a way to self soothe and feel safety without having these defense mechanisms overtake your functioning. You can spend a great deal of time (hours, days, months, years) running from yourself. That is just the opposite of what you need to do. You need to face whatever the feelings are and be able to find words to express them. If you can’t verbally say them, write them down or draw them. The essence is to get them out of you. Talk to a friend, family member, priest, psychologist, or mental health professional. Once you talk about your feelings and situations, you can understand your feelings and then plan on how to deal with them. The role of parents is to enable our children to feel safety even when challenged with frightening and threating thoughts and experiences. Parents, please set the way to enable your children to talk and share what they feel and have experienced. I implore you to respond to them in modulated and loving ways. For the adults who are plagued with anxiety and depression, pray for guidance to do what you need to do to feel safe enough to face your feelings. Talk with someone you trust whether

it be a friend or a psychologist. June is the month to celebrate Father’s Day. One of the biggest complaints of mothers and children is that the fathers are always working and when they are home, they are so tired that they fall asleep on the couch. The financial demands of life are large especially in an economy that is always in so much transition. Let’s pray to Our Lord and Our Heavenly Father that, through the Holy Spirit, fathers will be informed to find peace within so as to be able to set limits with themselves so they can guide and parent empathetically and lovingly. Fathers, pray to HIM for guidance in all that pains you and ask for guidance in all you do. As you do this, ask for guidance to make necessary changes to resolve your personal issues and no longer rely on defenses that keep you stuck in pain and away from those who love and need you. Fathers, be kind to yourselves and set limits with your work and make time for yourself and not only on Father’s Day. You have heard the statement, “A happy wife, a happy life.” How about this: a positive emotionally present father sets the stage for growth, love and success in a family and a happy life. A father who can relax and feel who they are and how they affect themselves and others will build a house where feelings can be expressed, and dilemmas worked through, so the family can thrive with love and joy laced with success with the Lord at your side and in your heart. A father who can say “No” to those things that deprive him of interacting in a meaningful way to capture the love he deserves to get and give deprives himself of a life where success is experienced by all. Happy Father’s Day from the Mental Health Ministry

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Adoration Prayer and Giving God Glory Praise his glorious name forever! Let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and amen! (Psalm 72:19) Holy God, All glory belongs to you. I come to you in prayer to glorify your name—not because of what you do, but because of who you are. I adore you for being my Abba Father. Your unconditional love for me stretches to the highest mountain peaks and reaches to the depths of the seas. It is beyond anything I can fathom. Your love never ends, and great is your faithfulness! (Lamentations 3:23).

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM

You deserve all the glory, honor, and praise I can offer. Forgive me for any prideful thoughts that would bring glory upon myself. Instead of relying on my own abilities, I choose to praise you and acknowledge that you have everything working for my good. I give glory to you and to the name of your son Jesus, Amen.
