From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“The Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed, that when it is sown is the smallest of all the seeds.”
(Mark 4:30-31)
Our Gospel reading today deals with the topic of faith. St. Mark affirms that if we had faith as small as a mustard seed, it would be enough to move mountains.
Christ teaches us that our faith, however small it may be, is very much alive, very active, and powerful! He compares the growth of our faith to the raising of a tiny mustard seed. When we plant and nurture that tiny seed, it will produce a tree so tall that the birds of the air will be able to nest in it. That is how our faith must grow and develop. We must never allow it to lie dormant after we have planted it. Jesus tells us if we keep it alive and nature it, we can move mountains with it.
Could there be a hidden meaning in Jesus’ words that by our faith we would be able to move mountains from one place to another? We know that no matter how much faith we have, we will not be able to physically pick up Mount Everest by our own strength and move it. It‘s physically impossible! So, let us consider for a moment that Jesus was not talking about physical mountains, but rather the many sins that we amass in our lifetime. These can grow to mountainous size if we don’t do something about them. Let’s assume that He was talking about those things that separate us from God. If we have faith in God, we can very easily make those mountains move into the abyss of refuse. However, it can happen only with the help of God’s grace that we receive every time we attend Mass. Through confession, reconciliation, and partaking of the Holy Eucharist we are able to break down these cold and dark mountains of sin and pride and remove the barriers that keep us separated from God.
The dictionary defines faith as a “trust in God and in His promises as made through Christ and the Scriptures by which humans are justified and saved.” We have faith when we allow Jesus to come into our hearts not strictly by words and ideas, but by contemplation. St. Basil the Great describes the ascent to God by liberating our thoughts from corporeality and temporality and raising our souls to the One who completely transcends the cosmos. He writes,
“Now if you want to say or hear something about God, break free from your body, break free from your sense perceptions. Once you have flown past all these things, transcended the entire created order in your thoughts, and raised your intellect far beyond these, contemplate the divine nature: uncircumscribed greatness, super eminent glory, desirable goodness, extraordinary beauty that ravishes the soul pierced by it but that cannot be worthily expressed in speech.”
In other words, the first step of faith is to unite with God in each moment of our lives. To embrace the eyes of faith is to contemplate His presence in all of creation.
Faith is a gift given by God to those who go to confession and purify their hearts. It comes to those who, like Mary, the sister of Lazarus, have learned to sit at the Lord’s feet in silence and desire to learn from Him the secrets of life and the most important goal for each person. In reading the Word of God, we can, like Mary, sit at the feet of the Lord.
Faith is the rising within us of the rivers of living water promised by Jesus to those who have, as St. Seraphim of Sarov (an Orthodox monk and theologian who St. John Paul the Great often quoted) so beautifully taught,
“Faith is released in us from the depths of our souls when we have taken out the garbage that obstructs the image and let go of everything that is unhelpful, unloving, and unhealthy.”
Our faith may, at times, be as small as the mustard seed, but we should never lose hope in what Jesus can do for us and through us. The challenge is to never stop seeking the Lord and as St. Paul tells us so beautifully today: “we walk by faith, not by sight.” What a wonderful encouragement and way to live our lives. Let faith and that trust in the Lord Jesus lead you closer to His eternal love.

Next weekend, we will have the farewell Mass for Fr. Dominik at 10:30 AM on Sunday. I encourage you to attend the reception after all the weekend Masses to thank him for his service and wish him God’s blessings in his new assignment. Fr. Dominik will leave us on Wednesday, June 26th to begin his ministry at St. John the Baptist High School. He will be greatly missed by all, especially by myself. Fr. Dominik was a great presence and blessing in all three of our schools,. We have been touched through his preaching and reflections on the Sacred Word and his happy nature. And many of us have experienced his great sense of humor. He surely kept us laughing at the rectory dining room table.
Go with God, my brother!

A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on September 14, 2024.
The session will run for ten consecutive weeks on Saturdays from 9:30-11:00 AM. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
I
Bless the LORD, my soul!
LORD, my God, you are great indeed! You are clothed with majesty and splendor, robed in light as with a cloak. You spread out the heavens like a tent; setting the beams of your chambers upon the waters. You make the clouds your chariot; traveling on the wings of the wind. You make the winds your messengers; flaming fire, your ministers.
II
You fixed the earth on its foundation, so it can never be shaken. The deeps covered it like a garment; above the mountains stood the waters. At your rebuke they took flight; at the sound of your thunder they fled. They rushed up the mountains, down the valleys to the place you had fixed for them. You set a limit they cannot pass; never again will they cover the earth.
III
You made springs flow in wadies that wind among the mountains. They give drink to every beast of the field; here wild asses quench their thirst. Beside them the birds of heaven nest; among the branches they sing. You water the mountains from your chambers; from the fruit of your labor the earth abounds. You make the grass grow for the cattle and plants for people’s work to bring forth food from the earth, wine to gladden their hearts, oil to make their faces shine, and bread to sustain the human heart. The trees of the LORD drink their fill, the cedars of Lebanon, which you planted. There the birds build their nests; the stork in the junipers, its home. The high mountains are for wild goats; the rocky cliffs, a refuge for badgers.
IV
You made the moon to mark the seasons, the sun that knows the hour of its setting. You bring darkness and night falls, then all the animals of the forest wander about. Young lions roar for prey; they seek their food from God. When the sun rises, they steal away and settle down in their dens. People go out to their work, to their labor till evening falls.
V
How varied are your works, LORD! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, great and wide! It teems with countless beings, living things both large and small. There ships ply their course and Leviathan, whom you formed to play with.
VI
All of these look to you to give them food in due time. When you give it to them, they gather; when you open your hand, they are well filled. When you hide your face, they panic. Take away their breath, they perish and return to the dust.
Send forth your spirit, they are created and you renew the face of the earth.
VII
May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD be glad in his works! Who looks at the earth and it trembles, touches the mountains and they smoke! I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God while I live. May my meditation be pleasing to him; I will rejoice in the LORD.
May sinners vanish from the earth, and the wicked be no more.
Bless the LORD, my soul! Hallelujah!*

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
In the Gospel, Jesus says: “This is how it is with the reign of God. A man scatters seed on the ground. He goes to bed and gets up day after day. Through it all the seed sprouts and grows without his knowing how it happens.” Through your almsgiving you are sowing seeds that grow far greater than you know. The coins placed in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box bring Christ love and compassion to the poor.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. “Every family needs a father -- a father who shares in his family's joy and pain, hands down wisdom to his children and offers them firm guidance and love,”
- Pope Francis
Every day, people in our community are helped because of support from funds raised through the Catholic Ministries Appeal.
Today, consider a dad like Paul. Paul saw information about the Catholic Ministries Appeal at his local parish, and he knew he had to turn to the Church for help since he had nowhere else to go. Paul had been gainfully employed for more than 10 years when he began to fall ill. Soon his medical issues made it impossible for him to keep working and he was forced to go out on disability.
After paying the co-pays on his medications, his family's rent and utilities bills, Paul had very little left to purchase food and other necessities for his family.
It was hard for him to ask for help, but with nowhere else to turn, he did. Catholic Charities found him a specialist who assessed the family's needs and directed them to appropriate resources in their community. He went to his Parish Outreach, where his family received food that allowed them to make it through the month. Paul and his family received the help they so desperately needed.
Today, Paul is back at work and the family is doing well. "I am so thankful that I know there is somewhere I can turn, where there are people that care, people I can talk to, if I am ever in such a situation again," shared Paul.

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY, MANHASSET HISTORY ARCHIVES PROJECT
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!
We are still attempting to collect photos, documents, and all kinds of information relating to the history of St. Mary’s, encompassing all aspects of parish activities and ministries, including the Schools of St. Mary’s.
As we look forward to the Centennial celebration of the Elementary School (2026), and the 175th Anniversary of the Parish (2028), our goal is to accumulate not only recent history, but find some missing pieces to fill in the past 170+years.
If you have any of the following from any event, ministry, or of any of the Schools of St. Mary’s, sharing these would be greatly appreciated:
Photos: Celebrations, graduations, sacraments, galas, etc.
Journals, Programs
Announcements (Bulletins not needed)
Newspaper articles
Family remembrances
Information regarding:
The Elementary and High School (s)
Past pastors, priests, nuns, principals, teachers
Clergy & Religious who were parish residents Knights of Columbus, Rosary Society, and other ministries
Any and all of these would be very helpful.
PLEASE NOTE: Any article of information which you wish to be returned can be “digitized” (scanned) and saved, then returned to you. Please include this request with your item with the contact information for its return to you. A box is located in the Parish Office to receive these valuable pieces of our parish’s history.

Ezekiel 17:22-23:””The Lord God says, I, too, will take from the crest of the cedar, from its topmost branches tear off a tender shoot, and plant it on a high and lofty mountain, on the mountain heights of Israel, I will plant it. It shall put forth branches and bear fruit and become a majestic cedar.” God can plant good seed in us and our couple relationship can bear fruit. What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.
Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
