From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” (John 6:56) Last week, we celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, which is not meant to simply be explained, but rather encountered as mystery. A mystery that is intended to be pondered so as to draw us into the mystery of God. Today, we celebrate another solemnity that is meant more to be pondered than explained. This Solemnity of Corpus Christi, or the Body and Blood of Christ, doesn’t need theological explanations; they will never be enough. What we need is faith and trust. Trust that the Word of Jesus is true. Many Christians believe that Jesus was speaking metaphorically and not literally about His Body and Blood, but rather to feed on the “Word” that Jesus came to preach. While the Word is certainly important and that understanding would be easier to accept, it is certainly NOT what Jesus intended. If it were, He would have clarified His teaching when many who could not accept it turned away. What Jesus says is to reiterate more strongly His words and this teaching. After confirming His intention and deepening this truth, Scripture tells us that many left Him. Then, turning to the Apostles, He asked, “Will you leave me too?” This would have been the opportune time to explain a different teaching to His Disciples so they would understand Him more clearly. Yet, there is nothing. So we conclude from this teaching, and others in the Scriptures, that the intention and desire of Jesus was to give us His very Self for Eternal Life. This gift is given as the imperishable food for our journey to sustain and nourish us on our path as believers. This teaching has been believed from the earliest times in the life of the Church. We share this continual belief in the Real and True presence of Jesus in the Eucharist with our Orthodox sisters and brothers. As the Churches founded by Jesus, we have kept faithful to this beautiful, yet difficult teaching. Like with the Trinity, we again encounter mystery. Theologians have attempted to help us grasp this mystery through the teaching of Transubstantiation. This states that the accidents (external presence) remain the same, but their substance changes into the Body and Blood of Jesus. So bread still looks and tastes like bread but is, in reality, the Body of Christ. The same is true for the accidents of the wine and its change into the Blood of our Lord. Again, this is helpful, but falls short of the beauty of what Jesus intends. What we need is faith to see past the accidents and to believe what Jesus intends. Faith acknowledges this great and wondrous Sacrament so that He may become part of us, as food for our journey. Hopefully, we become what we eat and drink...namely more like Jesus Himself. So what do we believe? After the priest calls down the Holy Spirit on the gifts of bread and wine, they truly BECOME the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Himself. Not a symbol, not a mirror of something else, BUT Jesus Christ Himself. While walking up to communion, have you ever pondered that you will cradle in your hands or on your tongue the true Body and Blood of our Savior? This awesome and humbling gift is Jesus’ abiding presence to us. We come to Mass to receive Jesus as Savior and Lord. We gather to worship this wondrous presence among us. May we stand in awe at this mystery, BUT more importantly, may it cause us to seek Jesus and become more like Him whom we consume. The Bishops of the United States have called for a three year renewal and revival in our understanding of the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. More information will follow to enable us as a parish to deepen our faith in Sacramental Jesus. Father Collins will be leaving us at the end of June. Since his arrival in the United States, his desire was to learn hospital chaplaincy ministry. This is so he could take that knowledge back to assist his own diocese in Ghana. A position as hospital chaplain has just opened up and Bishop Barres has assigned Father Collins to that position. We thank you, Father Collins, for your wonderful presence these last four months. We have all benefited from your deeply spiritual homilies and gentle presence. Please join with me in wishing Father Collins a very blessed and fruitful new ministry. In Jesus, our Eucharistic Lord, Fr. Bob

New Bereavement Group Seeks Volunteer Facilitators The Parish Social Ministry Office is looking for two volunteers who may feel God’s call to facilitate a Bereavement Group for the parish. Volunteers would be properly trained over a couple of weeks starting in September by Dr. Lou Sabatini. Those being trained would attend a one hour training session and then attend an hour actual bereavement session following the training. Once volunteers are trained, we will hold a bereavement session at St. Mary’s for those who suffer from loneliness and sadness after the loss of their loved-ones. Our bereavement session (running eight weeks, one hour and fifteen minutes per week) could be on any day of the week that works for the facilitators. The facilitators could share the responsibility of the sessions so the time commitment could be a little less. The volunteers do not necessarily have to be people who have suffered the loss of someone close to them, but do have to be individuals who would be able to empathize with those who have. If anyone is interested in volunteering to facilitate this very important session allowing us to build this critical ministry, especially post-COVID, please reach out to Kathleen Kosciusko at kkosciusko@stmary.ws or at 516-365-2705.

Parish Social Ministry Reaches Out to the Elderly and Homebound The Elderly and Homebound Ministry provides a social connection between the parish and the one in need. If you are interested in being contacted by our volunteers, please call the Parish Social Ministry office at 516-365-2705.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Today we celebrate the gift of the Body and Blood of Christ we hear Jesus ask his disciples, “Why do you not give them something to eat yourselves?” And he shows them how by the multiplication of the five loaves and two fishes. Today, as you donate to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul know that the multiplication of the loaves and fishes will happen again and the hungry will be fed. If you or someone you know needs assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385 ext. 1125 or SVDP@stmary.ws. A Letter from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Dear Parishioners of St. Mary, The Saint Vincent de Paul Society is a lay ministry dedicated to helping “neighbors in need” right here in our own Manhasset community. While our ministry is part of the St. Mary’s Parish, the neighbors we help do not need to be members of the Parish, just simply a member of the Manhasset community. In the past several years, we have assisted 116 families utilizing $61,000 all from donations to make a significant difference in the lives of those suffering from financial hardship. We have several programs which help to alleviate the financial needs of the poor in our community, including the “Change A Life” program. The funds donated to this program are specifically targeted to change the trajectory of a recipient’s life, particularly in the form of educational assistance. Recently, we fully funding a 2-year scholarship for a wonderful and hardworking young man from Manhasset who was orphaned as a teenager. With our help, this young man was able to become a fully licensed electrician and is currently working on Long Island. We are blessed that Manhasset is a generous community. In fact, the entire $61,000 used to fund our efforts came from donations to the Parish poor box, our annual St. Mary’s pulpit appeal, the annual St. Vincent de Paul Long Island Walk for the Poor, and through the generosity of our benefactors. And, 100% of your Saint Vincent de Paul donations are tax deductible, and may also be eligible for your Company’s corporate matching gift program. We are writing to ask you to consider becoming a benefactor by making a donation to our conference. You can make a donation by check payable to “St. Vincent de Paul Society” and sending or dropping the check off at the Parish office. If you are interested in learning more about the Change A Life program, feel free to email us at SVDP@stmary.ws, or contact Mary Fran Jeffrey (SVDP Development Coordinator) at 516-220-7836. Thank you for your consideration and God bless you and your family.

Rosary Society Our Mission Statement: The Rosary Society fosters devotion to Mary through prayer and good works for causes that would be dear to her heart Invest 20 minutes of your day to pray the Rosary, and see the difference it will make in your life. If you would like the Rosarians to pray for a special intention, please e-mail us at rosarysociety@stmary.ws.

Tips for Praying the Mysteries of the Rosary Tip #5: Get lost in the scene. Imagine yourself there, at Jesus’ side. Place yourself in the scene, not as a fly on the wall, but as a very specific person so you can fully immerse yourself into the situation and explore what you would have been thinking and feeling if you were there.

Daughters of Mary Are Back! After being disbanded about fifteen years ago, the Rosary Society’s “junior” group has been restarted. With the supervision of past presidents Cathy Morrissey and Ann Welsh, thirteen 8th grade girls from St. Mary’s Elementary School signed up to become members of the Daughters of Mary. A Tea Party in honor of Our Lady was held on May 24th in the school library, with the theme of the different titles given to Our Blessed Mother. More planning is ahead over the summer as we introduce our newest members to devotion to Mary and her most holy Rosary. Our Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, and the Elementary School, High School, and Religious Education program will all be involved in developing a program of activities for these young ladies. We are looking forward to having them join us at various activities in our next calendar of events.

n Wednesday, June 8, the eighth-graders of St. Mary’s Elementary School gathered for their last Eucharistic celebration as a class in the Church of Saint Mary. The Graduation Mass celebrated by Father Bob and Fr. Dominik beautifully marked the occasion as family members, administrators, faculty, and staff were in attendance to pray with the soon-to-be graduates. That Friday, the students and faculty processed onto Denihan Field for the Graduation Ceremony of the Class of 2022. CoPrincipal Sarah Griffin opened the ceremony by welcoming the

attendees. Fr. Dominik, who serves as the Chaplain for the Schools of St. Mary, gave the invocation, and Miss Saoirse McNamara ’22 led the gathering in singing the Star-Spangled Banner. Special awards were announced, including two Honorary Awards named for Anne Salzman and Matteo Diaz, teacher and student, respectively, who were loved members of the school community. In a touching moment, Mrs. Rita Diaz was invited to the podium and received her beloved late son’s diploma posthumously from Father Bob. The Class Agents were announced and took part in the traditional sealing of their time capsule, which contains a letter from each student to their future selves. The distribution of diplomas took place, followed by Father Bob’s address to the graduates and the final blessing. The Class of 2022 earned over $350,000 in academic scholarships, and more than half of the graduates will continue their studies at St. Mary’s High School for their college preparatory years. We cannot be more proud of this entire class and joyfully welcome them to our St. Mary’s alumni community! Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Adoration Prayers for the Feast of Corpus Christi Prayers for the Church and its leaders especially and for the needs of all people: For Francis, our Pope, and John, our bishop, that they may lead us to a more faithful living of the Gospel, For courage and wisdom for Fr. Bob our Pastor, for our Parochial Vicars Fr. Collins and Fr. Dominik and for all priests, seminarians, and those who feel the call from God to the priesthood, for their guiding purpose to be a growing desire to serve those who are suffering and in need; for resistance to the temptation of status, pride, or self-service, For government leaders who are in government offices and for all who seek elected office to work for policies that relieve poverty, suffering, and injustice wherever it is found, and for peace and salvation of the whole world,

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM

For the acknowledgment and repentance of the sin of racism in our society and in our community; for an understanding of its gravity and consequences, especially during this time of unrest and danger in our country, for strength and courage to be faithful to the mandate of Jesus to love one another, For the continued prayer for protection against the pandemic that still assails us, for divine and human assistance for those who cannot support their families; for those without proper medical care, and for those in despair over life’s troubles,

For our Parish family, that as we reaffirm our belief in the real presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, that we may also become the Body of Christ, visible through our love and compassion for those who are hungry, homeless, and abandoned in our Manhasset community, For medical personnel and first responders who care for the sick and dying during this pandemic, For all who have passed to eternal rest, for healing for those who mourn, and for all whom we now lift up in silent prayer, Prayer: Loving Father, you give us lasting food for body and soul. Answer our prayers as we come before you in adoration, that we may become more like your Son, visible witnesses of your love and mercy. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

We thank all those who, after a hiatus of more than two years, returned to dedicate their voices in prayer to the many Sundays and special liturgical services of the church year. We are particularly grateful to those who have continued to serve since the inception of the choir, some whom have served up to fifty years and also gratitude to those who are newer participants. The choir will resume rehearsals in September and new members would be most welcome at that time. - Robert Levulis The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ | June 19, 2022

Every day, people in our community are helped because of support from funds raised through the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Today, consider a dad like James. James saw information about the Catholic Ministries Appeal at his local parish, and he knew he had to turn to the Church for help since he had nowhere else to go. James had been gainfully employed for more than 10 years when he began to fall ill. Soon his medical issues made it impossible for him to keep working and he was forced to go out on disability. After paying the co-pays on his medications, his family's rent and utilities bills, James had very little left to purchase food and other necessities for his family. It was hard for him to ask for help, but with nowhere else to turn, he did. Catholic Charities found him a specialist who assessed the family's needs and directed them to appropriate resources in their community. He went to his Parish Outreach, where his family received food that allowed them to make it through the month. James and his family received the help they so desperately needed. Today, James is back to work and the family is doing well. "I am so thankful that I know there is somewhere I can turn, where there are people that care, people I can talk to, if I am ever in such a situation again," shared James. Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in the lives of others. GIVE ONLINE AT https://www.drvc.org/donate/cma/
