From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners, “Do not be afraid.” (Matthew 10:31)

In our Gospel today, Jesus is sending out the Disciples as Missionaries. They are commissioned to preach the Word. They are sent out with a promise. The promise is that God is with them and will offer them His strength and comfort. St. Matthew expresses this ultimate love the Father has for us by reminding us that “even the hairs on our heads are counted.” This is an assurance of God’s attentiveness to all of our lives. Jesus is encouraging us to keep strong in faith through hard times caused by the opposition our Catholic teachings and values face in the world. Jesus assures us that God’s loving care will always be with us. We hear this same reassurance in our Old Testament reading from the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah experiences the taunting and persecution of those to whom he was called to preach. Yet, in the midst of this difficult and challenging situation, he proclaims “the Lord is with me, like a mighty champion.”

Fear in the face of suffering, especially from persecution, is natural. Still, three times Jesus issues instructions about not being afraid. “Do not be afraid.” Matthew was addressing his community’s present situation: there was reason to be afraid; they were being persecuted for their faith. Ultimately, in the final judgment, Jesus assures his followers, the truth will come out. Meanwhile, they will endure suffering because they are his followers and must still proclaim the truth openly: “proclaim on the housetops.”

Discipleship is never easy. Like Jeremiah, we will experience the taunting of the world as we proclaim the splendor of truth in Jesus. At times, it may seem that evil has the upper hand. We can surely look around our world and become discouraged or even fearful at the path the world is taking. Yet, we are reminded to not be afraid. Our job as missionaries is to boldly proclaim the message of Jesus. That message, as we know, is not always warmly embraced by the culture. We, as Catholics, can certainly be persecuted for our embracing of the causes for life especially as we stand up for the voiceless in our society. Our stance on abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment speaks of our concern for those who, at times, have no advocates in power. When we defend the definition of marriage between one man and one woman, fight to eliminate poverty, work for racial equality and justice, we can be ridiculed as we stand up for God’s natural law. In a time when our very religious freedoms are challenged, we speak out and pray.

But our hope is renewed as we move forward. It is not the world we need to please, but only God. Strengthened by our resolve to do the Lord’s will, we joyfully and lovingly move forward. We live both by faith because we do not see evil yielding to goodness and the hope that, as Jesus says, “I will acknowledge you before my Father.” He assures us that, until the final reckoning, God is with us, knows us more intimately than any human. What human, no matter how close, knows the number of hairs on our heads? God knows us, God is with us, and so we have hope as we stand up for Jesus and face the difficulties life throws at us for being his disciples.

The first step of discipleship is to live a life of truthfulness. Does it mean we are prefect? No, but we must always be willing to look at our lives in relationship to our faith in Jesus. It is not easy, as we know; take strength from the words of Jesus, “do not be afraid.” Boldly proclaim the teachings of Jesus and the Church. Know how much God loves you and that He will never abandon you!

With that in mind, let us continue to dialogue in openness and honesty and let us together make a better world. Jesus would want nothing less and neither would any person of good will.

Two weekends ago, it was a time of great joy for our diocese. We are grateful to Almighty God for the three men ordained to the priesthood.

As you know, our Bishop John Barres has declared that the month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. May we always find in that loving heart the font of mercy and forgiveness.

The Rosary Society’s Statue of Our Lady of Fatima

In 2017, the centennial anniversary of the apparition of our Lady at Fatima, St. Mary’s Rosary Society received the gift of a beautiful statue of Our Lady of Fatima. This statue is a traveling statue, and came to us with the requirement that its presence be shared throughout our parish. The statue of Our Lady has been “visiting” with Rosarians and St. Mary’s friends and families in their homes since that time. For those whom Mary has visited, she has brought peace, hope, comfort, strength and renewed faith.

Mary’s Making Moves: Campus-wide Reimagining

Since the Church of Saint Mary was first established in 1853, this faithful community has continued to grow and develop over the years to include St. Mary’s Elementary School in 1926 and High School in 1949. Now, on the eve of the Elementary School’s centennial celebration and the High School’s 75th anniversary, Fr. Bob, the pastor, has announced a massive campus-wide reimagining, setting in motion an innovative set of shifts that will best serve the Schools of St. Mary and shepherd the community into the next chapter of Catholic Education on Long Island.

The St. Mary’s campus, which boasts three school buildings beyond the Church at 1300 Northern Boulevard, is both a historical and modern-day Manhasset landmarka beacon resting at the southern end of Plandome Road. Alongside Fr. Bob, Fr. Elias, president of the Schools; school administrators; multiple committees of parents and alumni; and dedicated parishioners have all played a part in identifying these shifts at every level to maximize the impact of a high quality St. Mary’s education in the year 2024 and beyond.

At the High School level, construction plans are underway to reclaim the third floor of Marist Hall, previously occupied by religious brothers of the Marist Order. Under the one roof, St. Mary’s High School students will benefit from increased unity, security, and academic cohesion.

WITH US
MARY’S MAKING MOVE
MOVES

Additionally, the High School will launch the Catholic Entrepreneurship and Design Experience (CEDE) Program from the Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship at the Busch Business School of the Catholic University of America. Fr. Elias stated, “At its core, CEDE is an education in discerning desires. As the students come to better understand their motivations – what they want – CEDE also inspires them to think about how they can use their gifts and desires to respond creatively to needs in our society.”

Middle School students will have a new home in Immaculata Hall, formerly the all-girls high school building, where the opportunity for growth is limitless. Middle school students - grades 6, 7 and 8 - will reach their greatest potential and grow in independence while learning in a more mature space with flexible classrooms and common areas for socializing and studying independently. A building and program specifically designed with middle school students in mind will strike the perfect balance for young people at a critical time in their development. Parent partnership, age appropriate celebrations and activities, as well as continued collaboration with St. Mary’s High School and mentorships with elementary school students will assure that middle school students get the most out of their change of address.

The Elementary School building will be taking full advantage of its newly vacated classrooms in the former middle school wing by transforming classrooms into various resource rooms, dedicated spaces for reading and math application, movement, and other enrichment activities. With the additional classroom space, the Elementary School will also be soft-launching its Cherubs Program in September 2023 which will look to serve infants and toddlers as well as their parents and caregivers with weekly classes before students are ready for Nursery classes at age 3.

Perhaps the most exciting and impactful move is the construction of three chapels on campus - one in each building for the High School, Middle School, and Elementary School. With such easy access to a chapel, students of all ages will be able to deepen their personal relationship with God, know Jesus more intimately, and find prayer becoming a stronger part of their daily lives. When asked about the impact of the new chapels, Fr. Bob said, “We are very excited that our young people will have more time for prayer in the presence of our Lord.”

All campus movement is scheduled to begin as soon as students head off for summer vacation this week. Come September, the Schools of St. Mary will be ready with a fresh face to welcome back its returning students as well as new students and their families who wish to move with us and experience the power of a rigorous, innovative, and cheerful St. Mary’s education, rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

With four distinct programs, St. Mary’s is ready to pave the way for the next chapter of Catholic Education on Long Island.

170 Years and Countless Blessings for the Church of Saint Mary

Almost 200 guests gathered at the picturesque manhasset bay yacht club on saturday, june 10, 2023, to celebrate the 170th anniversary of the Church of Saint Mary and recognize Mrs. Catherine Morrissey as this year’s Parish Gala honoree.

With parishioners, clergy, religious, school community members, and friends of St. Mary’s present, the evening was spectacular from start to finish. The guests’ excitement set the tone for the night with joyful well-wishes for the continued blessings and success of the parish, which has existed since 1853 and now ministers to 11,000 Catholics in Manhasset.

During the celebration, Fr. Bob presented Cathy Morrissey with the Magnificat Award, which recognizes individuals in the parish whose lives exemplify St. Mary’s “yes” in their own lives.

“Cathy’s devotion to her faith and family exudes her love for our Blessed Mother and is personified in following Christ’s message of hope and evangelization in the Church and her daily actions. Through her good works sharing the message of the Gospel with adults and children alike, we bestow this year’s Magnificat Medal upon Cathy in recognition of her boundless energy, faith-filled and charitable efforts.”

Upon receiving the prestigious medal, Cathy humbly thanked Fr. Bob for his words and for recognizing her devotion to the Blessed Mother. “Those of you who know how very much I love Our Lady will understand I could not be more delighted if I won the Nobel Prize tonight.” She continued, “For me to accept this medal with the grace it deserves, I believe I must share the honor – first of all, with Mary, whose very real power has been keeping an eye on me for years and who has been bringing me deeper into the love of her Son since joining this parish.” In addition to thanking her husband, Brian, of 43 years, and her entire family, it

was with much humility and grace that Cathy shared, “this night is not just about one individual, it is the recognition of our entire parish community. We, parishioners, parents, family members, seniors, kids, teens, administrators, teachers, staff, religious sisters, and our exceptional priests make up St. Mary’s. The whole is far greater than any one part. Our parish and schools are undoubtedly successful because of the gifts each of us commits to St. Mary’s.”

We want to express our sincere gratitude to the Morrissey Family, the Gala co-chairs, the committee, and staff members for their hard work organizing this special evening. We are thankful to everyone who attended, donated to our raffles, underwrote, or sponsored the event. Our Parish Gala was a tremendous success because of your support!

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Today is the last Sunday of the season that Children’s Liturgy of the Word will take place at the 9:00 AM Mass. Special thanks to our prayer leaders Tintin Bariso, Tara Baranello, Dianna Figueroa-Russo, Anita Gallo, Rosemary Mascali, and Gianna Saphia who worked lovingly and diligently to bring the Word of God to our little ones. Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo

Diocesan Priest, Oblate of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart

Montforte Irpino: 11 January 1899 - Rome: 2 May 1934

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
