From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“For you were called for freedom, brothers and sisters.” (Galatians 5:13) St. Paul calls us to remember that we live in the freedom of God’s children. This freedom is not a license to do whatever we desire. Rather, the freedom of God is to keep us from anything that enslaves us. Emotions, ego, and self-centeredness are areas that have the power to bind us to own desires. St. Paul cautions his listeners that the yoke of slavery, which has been removed from us by Jesus, is one that we must avoid. We avoid this by being conscious of those things in our lives that pull us away from the promise and freedom of Jesus. One of the areas that St. Paul zeroes in on is our relationship with others. We hear so much in the Scriptures about loving our neighbors. This is part of the great command of Jesus: loving God demands that we also love others. In loving one another we share in the divine love that enfolds each of us. St. Paul says if we are biting and tearing each other apart, we are acting outside the scope of Jesus’ ministry. In wisdom, St. Paul says if we engage in those activities we face the possibility of not only destroying others, but also destroying ourselves. We destroy ourselves because we wrap ourselves in acts of darkness and move from the light of Jesus. St. Paul again encourages us to live a life of the Holy Spirit. He says if we allow the power of the Holy Spirit to guide us on our journey, then we will be kept from a path that “leads to self-indulgence.” Self-indulgence and self-centeredness are the opposites of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. We heard in last week’s Gospel that unless we die to the “ego” we can never fully live in the freedom of God’s children. That ego is the force that gives guilt and fear power over our lives. When we react in those forces, then the vision of Jesus is dimmed and eventually extinguished in our lives. As we hear in the second reading, those forces are opposed to the Gospel, to the way of Jesus, and “do not carry out good intentions.” The call to serve and loving God’s people are ways to keep us from becoming self-indulgent or self-absorbed. Think about it. If we are concerned about the needs of others, won’t that concern push out any tendencies to become self-indulgent? Of course, an open heart that finds its joy in giving cannot become self-absorbed. For us, then, the call of faith is that daily discipline to die to the desire that puts self above all things. The Gospel tells us that the call of Jesus to follow Him is one that we must take seriously. When we put our hand to the plow and don’t look back we can see that as putting Jesus first (yes, first…above all others!), but also leaving behind our sins and failings. It entails seeking out forgiveness in Confession…and never looking back. The forgiveness of God is total and complete. To accept that means we do not look back on our past with the guilt that freezes us. Rather, we are to live answering the call today and leaving the past where it should be…behind us. If we can do that, then the light of Jesus can truly lead us in the freedom of God’s beloved. A reminder that the Catholic Ministries Appeal is still going on. Please consider giving to help the work of the Church on Long Island. Your funds will go to support vocations, the poor, the elderly, unwed mothers, and the myriad of services that so many have come to rely on through our Diocesan Agencies. One hundred percent of all funds are used ONLY for the ministries within the Church. Thank you for your generosity! The summer offers us a time to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather. Many of us will begin our summer travel and vacation. While on vacation we still have the very serious obligation, as faithful Catholics, to attend Mass each Sunday. There is a great web site, Masstimes.org, or google Catholic Mass Times. They offer you the times and places Mass is offered wherever in the United States you may travel. Also, as a gentle reminder, that as financial stewards, our weekly offering is important for the running of our ministries and parish facilities. In the summer months our collections drop. I suggest/ask/encourage you to consider making up the envelopes of any weekends you may be away. Another option is, of course, the direct giving that the parish offers as an option. Thank you always for your generous support. In Jesus, Fr. Bob

New Bereavement Group Seeks Volunteer Facilitators The Parish Social Ministry Office is looking for two volunteers who may feel God’s call to facilitate a Bereavement Group for the parish. Volunteers would be properly trained over a couple of weeks starting in September by Dr. Lou Sabatini. Those being trained would attend a one hour training session and then attend an hour actual bereavement session following the training. Once volunteers are trained, we will hold a bereavement session at St. Mary’s for those who suffer from loneliness and sadness after the loss of their lovedones. Our bereavement session (running eight weeks, one hour and fifteen minutes per week) could be on any day of the week that works for the facilitators. The facilitators could share the responsibility of the sessions so the time commitment could be a little less. The volunteers do not necessarily have to be people who have suffered the loss of someone close to them, but do have to be individuals who would be able to empathize with those who have. If anyone is interested in volunteering to facilitate this very important session allowing us to build this critical ministry, especially post-COVID, please reach out to Kathleen Kosciusko at kkosciusko@stmary.ws or at 516-365-2705.
Parish Social Ministry Reaches Out to the Elderly and Homebound The Elderly and Homebound Ministry provides a social connection between the parish and the one in need. n Wednesday, June 1, 2022, the seniors gathered for the last time as students to celebrate Mass together in the Church of Saint Mary. The Eucharistic celebration was well-attended as families, faculty, administrators, clergy, and staff joined to witness this beautiful evening that was the prayerful pinnacle of the four-year journey. The soon-to-be graduates were called to the altar to receive a prayer box from Fr. Bob, which contained rosary beads, a pocket-sized book of Catholic prayers, a bible, and holy water. The hope is that the symbolic gift from the school will travel with each student as they continue their faith journey in the following chapters of their lives, especially when they feel far from home. After the Mass, the evening continued with the first-ever Senior Banquet. Several students presented powerful testimonials about their St. Mary’s experience during
Two days later, it was a picture-perfect Friday for the Class of 2022. The 69th Commencement Exercises for Saint Mary’s High School took place on Denihan Field with an enthusiastic and proud audience present to witness the beautiful ceremony for an exceptional class. After two long pandemic years, the Class of 2022 rallied to find its way back to normalcy. Together they rose to the challenge of navigating college applications, followed by difficult decisions in selecting their post-secondary education, all while making the absolute best of their final year at the school. Their resilience, fortitude, faith, and grit have left an indelible mark on our hearts. Valedictorian Alessandra Barlas offered brilliant remarks to her fellow graduates, noting their abilities to rise above with determination and “most importantly, we held fast to our faith. Praying together as a school community on a regular basis at Mass.” With 18.7 million dollars (and counting) earned in academic scholarships, we cannot be more proud of these graduates, who we now welcome to our alumni family! You can watch the Commencement Exercises for the Class of 2022 by following this link: https://tinyurl.com/SMHSCommencement2022. Religious Education Registration Is Now Open for St. Mary Religious Education Program (2022-2023) Dear Families, It is so wonderful to invite you to now register your children for the St. Mary Religious Education Program (2022-2023). We are resuming in person catechesis as well as continuing to offer the optional model of online lessons. To enroll, visit the Religious Education page on the St. Mary parish website. Starting in September 2022, classes for grades 1-8 will be held on Sunday (9:15 – 10:15 AM), on Monday for grades 6-8 (7:00 – 8:00 PM), and on Tuesday for grades 1-5 (4:30 – 5:30 PM). It is always heartwarming to hear a person share the memory of someone who has made an impact on their life. Frequently, they will talk about a teacher who taught them something that made an impact on how they see the world. In sharing Christ’s Gospel to our young Catholics – this can be you! We are in need of Catechists and program volunteers with a devoted knowledge of Scripture and doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church. Please do consider serving the parish as a Catechist, assistant or hall/traffic monitor. To join our growing school, please contact the Religious Education Office at 516-627-4028 ext. 1127. June 25th - Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary “In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.” - Our Lady of Fatima The Immaculate Heart of Mary is a special form of devotion to the physical heart of Mary, It is Mary’s love for God, her love for her Son, and her love for all people that draws us to want to study and to imitate her. In his Gospel, Luke mentions the heart of Mary twice, saying that Mary kept what Jesus was saying and doing in her heart. During the 12th century, writers such as St. Anselm and St. Bernard of Clairvaux had great influence on Marian devotion. The Church used the lessons of the Second Nocturn of St. Bernardine of Siena, Doctor of the Heart of Mary, for her feast. In 1917, at Fatima, Portugal, Our Lady appeared to three children while in the hills tending sheep. On July 13, during one of her six apparitions, Mary told the children, “to save poor sinners God wants to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart.” Twenty-five years later, on December 8, 1942 (the feast of the Immaculate Conception),Pope Pius XII dedicated the Church and the human race to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and extended the feast to the entire Church. Mary’s Immaculate Heart is typically pictured with flames representing her burning or undying love. Her Heart is encircled by roses or lilies symbolizing her joys and her purity and oftentimes a sword pierces the heart reflecting the prophecy of Simeon in the Gospel of Luke. Mary’s Heart is a symbol of her compassion and her sinlessness. (from The Illustrated Book of Mary) IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, PRAY FOR US!

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Today is the last Sunday of the season that Children’s Liturgy of the Word will take place at the 9:00 AM Mass. We were so happy to be back after more than two years. Special thanks to prayer leaders Anita Gallo, Rosemary Mascali, and Gianna Saphia who were able to participate in this ministry at this time. Other “veterans” will return in the fall and we would love to have a few more new people. Wishing everyone a blessed summer! Let the little children come to me... (Matthew 19:14)

What is a Knights of Columbus Family? We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.
O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family. Interested?
