From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” ( John 6:56)
Last week we celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, which is not meant to simply be explained, but rather encountered as mystery. A mystery that is meant to be pondered so as to draw us into the mystery of God. Today, we celebrate another Solemnity that is meant more to be pondered than explained. This Solemnity of Corpus Christi, or the Body and Blood of Christ, doesn’t need theological explanations; they will never be enough. What we need is faith and trust. Trust that the Word of Jesus is true.
Many Christians believe that Jesus was speaking metaphorically and not literally about His Body and Blood and that He meant to feed on the “Word” that He came to preach. While the Word is certainly important and that understanding would be easier to accept, it is certainly NOT what Jesus intended. If it were, He would have clarified His teaching when many who could not accept it turned away. What Jesus says is to reiterate more strongly His words and this teaching. After many leave Him, He turns to the Apostles and says, “Will you leave me, too?” This would have been the opportune moment to explain a different teaching to His Disciples so they would understand more clearly. Yet, there is no other explanation offered. So we conclude from this teaching and others in the Scriptures that Jesus does indeed want to give us His very Self as food for our journey. Jesus never said this is a symbol of my Body and Blood, but rather IT IS My Body and Blood. This teaching has been believed and taught from the earliest days in the life of the Church. We share this continual believe in the Real and True presence of Jesus in the Eucharist with our Orthodox sisters and brothers. As the Churches founded by Jesus, we have kept faithful to this beautiful yet difficult teaching. St. Ignatius of Antioch (c.110 A.D.) says “The Eucharist is the Flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, flesh which suffered for our sins and which the Father, in His goodness, raised up again.”
Like the Trinity, we again encounter mystery. Theologians have attempted to help us grasp this mystery through the teaching of Transubstantiation. This states that the accidents (external presence) remain the same but their substance changes into the Body and Blood of Jesus. So bread still looks and tastes like bread but is, in reality, the Body of Christ. The same would be true for the accidents of the wine and its change into the Blood of our Lord.
Again, this is helpful but falls short of the beauty of what Jesus intends. What we need is faith to see past the accidents and to believe what Jesus intends. Faith acknowledges this great and wondrous Sacrament so that He may become part of us, as food for our journey, and that hopefully we become what we eat and drink...namely more like Jesus Himself.
So, what do we believe? After the priest calls down the Holy Spirit on the gifts of bread and wine, they truly BECOME the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Himself. Not a symbol, not a mirror of something else, BUT Jesus Himself. St. John Chrysostom (c. 344 A.D.), addressing some who doubted and needed proof of this great Mystery says, “Some of you say, I wish I could see His shape, His appearance, His garments, only look! You see Him! You touch Him! You eat Him! BELIEVE.” A great challenge for each of us. So, as you come to receive Jesus in the Eucharist, ponder while walking up to Communion that you will cradle in your hands or on your tongue the true Body and Blood of our Savior. This awesome and humbling gift is Jesus’ abiding presence to us.
We come to Mass to receive Jesus as Savior and Lord. The prayers and actions of the Liturgy help us to refocus and continue to acknowledge Jesus as Lord and to remind us that we gather to worship this wondrous presence among us. May we stand in awe at this mystery, BUT more importantly, may it cause us to seek Jesus and become more like Him whom we consume.
I encourage you to spend time with Our Lord Jesus present in the tabernacle or at exposition of Blessed Sacrament. It certainly helps us believe more deeply. By the way, as a reminder, exposition is offered each Monday from 3:00 to 5:00 PM in the Church. Come spend time with Jesus.

A Special Announcement from Fr. Bob
Dear Parishioners,
Parochial Vicars are assigned to a parish for a short period of time. This practice is intended to give them many varied pastoral experiences before they take on the ministry as pastor of a parish. Unfortunately for us, Fr. Dominik , who came to us as a newly ordained priest, has come to the end of his time here at St. Mary’s and will be transferred at the end of June to St. John the Baptist High School. During his three years here, Fr. Dominik has become part of the fabric of the life of St. Mary’s. His smiling face and welcoming demeanor are seen in his dedicated work with our young people, most especially the students of the Schools of St. Mary. His prayerful celebration of Holy Mass and his insightful preaching has been an inspiration to many. On a personal note, he has been a wonderful addition to the life of the rectory. His sense of humor has added such life and laughter to our meals together. His care and concern have been extended to me, especially when back and knee problems have made some of my movements difficult. His departure is certainly a sad moment for all of us, but we are grateful to Almighty God for the time he has spent with us. Let us pray for a continued fruitful ministry in his new assignment.
I Am pleased to announce that Fr. Anthony Saliba, who was here in the summer of 2015, has been assigned as the new Parochial Vicar. We look forward to his arrival this summer.
Fr. Raf will be returning from Poland when his new visa is issued. I hope for him to return sometime in September.
I am planning small receptions after the Masses on June 22nd and 23rd for us to bid farewell and to thank Fr. Dominik for sharing his priesthood with us. Details coming soon in the bulletin and parish website.
In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

MR. & MRS. SANTO GENTILE Recipients of the 2024 Church of Saint Mary
Magnificat Award
“Josephine and Santo not only share an exemplary devotion to each other but also to their faith and family in following Christ’s message of hope and evangelization beyond the Catholic Church. Through their ability to share the Gospel message daily by example and most often quietly assisting those in need, we bestow this year’s Magni fi cat Award upon Josephine and Santo in recognition of their faith-fi lled and charitable efforts.” –REV. FR. ROBERT A. ROMEO, PASTOR
Josephine Gentile’s existence as the first child and girl in her family was full of responsibilities and the hidden workload of the family’s needs. Her discipline and obedience to her family were of saintly proportions. Without the existence of a high school in her small town of Ispica, with a population of less than 16,000, she dreamt of the day she could begin her formal studies beyond the southeastern corner of Sicily. At 15 years old, Josephine’s father, working in the United States as a mason, had finally earned enough money to have his family join him. Upon her arrival in this country, she immediately enrolled in high school, speaking no English, and graduated a year early. Josephine worked during the day and attended college at night to pursue a degree in accounting. To her dismay, the reality of a woman working as an accountant at that time was discouraged and not conducive to raising their two children, Ronald and David. She became a mathematics teacher and also obtained a Master’s Degree in French. Her ability to focus, pivot, and achieve was just the beginning of a successful career as an educator and administrator, followed by a self-made real estate business and management company with a vast portfolio of residential and commercial properties, which continue to grow and expand in Brooklyn.
Santo Gentile was born in South Brooklyn, the second child of four and the first and only son of Sicilian immigrants. As a child, settling down in Brooklyn among all the other Italian immigrants was familiar and comfortable. His family only spoke
Sicilian in the house while the Italian radio station WOV played in the background day and night. Learning English was part of the Catholic School curriculum at Sacred Heart, St. Stephen’s grammar school, while in the play yard and on the streets, he and his friends conversed in Sicilian. Santo was expected to learn a trade, as college was never considered an option. He attended Grady Vocational High School on the auto mechanic track and worked at the Brooklyn Eagle, a newspaper publishing company in downtown Brooklyn. Even though working at the publisher was a side job, he started as a messenger boy and, after graduating, was offered the night shift as a galley boy. This position eventually led to a good job as a lithographer in Manhattan, earning more money than most heads of the household in his early twenties.
Although being drafted into the Army was considered a drag and a total inconvenience to Santo, it became a blessing in disguise. He could reflect, expand his horizons, and prioritize his future. He was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and his first letter was to his future wife and soul mate, Josephine. At the time of the first letter, Santo and Josephine had only met once briefly four years prior and exchanged a few words. This meeting of the families occurred at Santo’s parents’ home and would be considered uneventful for Josephine since she was young and was sitting at the kitchen table trying to get her homework done. Unbeknownst to her, her impression on the 20-year-old tall, strong, and handsome Santo would be everlasting. The countless letters that followed would become the foundation of their love for each other.
Once discharged from the Army and able to marry his true love, Josephine, Santo would complete
his college education at night to become an accountant and eventually pass the CPA exam. Leaving a job as a pressman, earning three times as much, he took an entry level position as a junior accountant at the age of 33 years old, a difficult decision at that time, but eventually paid off as he built a thriving accounting firm with over 35 employees and thousands of happy clients.
In addition to their business success, Josephine and Santo are known for their humanitarian efforts, supporting scholarships, donating to the poor, funding church projects, and sponsoring medical missions to impoverished countries to save lives. Like Ispica, Mr. and Mrs. Gentile are hidden jewels in today’s world, promoting Christian values in everything they do.
Fr. Bob expressed his deep gratitude for the couple. He said, “Josephine and Santo not only share an exemplary devotion to each other but also to their faith and family in following Christ’s message of hope and evangelization beyond the Catholic Church. Through their ability to share the Gospel message by example and most often quietly assisting those in need, we bestow this year’s Magnificat Award upon Josephine and Santo in recognition of their faith-filled and charitable efforts.”
To join the parish of St. Mary’s in honoring Josephine and Santo Gentile and the blessings they bring to the community, you can attend the Gala or make a meaningful donation in their name. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
EUCHARISTIC THANKSGIVING TO THE HOLY TRINITY
Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, behold us prostrate in your divine presence. We humble ourselves profoundly and beg you to forgive our sins.
We adore you, Almighty Father, and with hearts overflowing we thank you that you have given us your divine Son Jesus to be our Redeemer, and that he bequeathed himself to us in the most holy Eucharist even to the end of the world, revealing to us the wondrous love of his heart in this mystery of faith and love.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
O Word of God, Jesus our Redeemer, we adore you and with hearts overflowing we thank you for having taken human flesh upon yourself and having become both Priest and Victim in the sacrifice of the Cross, for our redemption: a sacrifice which, through the overflowing love of your Sacred Heart, you renew upon our altars every moment.
O High Priest, divine Victim, give us the grace to honor your holy sacrifice in the most sacred Eucharist with the homage of Mary most holy and of all your holy Church, triumphant, suffering and militant. We offer ourselves wholly to you; of your infinite goodness and mercy accept our offering, unite it to your own and grant us your blessings.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen
O Divine Spirit the Paraclete, we adore you and with hearts overflowing we give you thanks that you have, with such great love for us, brought about the ineffable blessings of the Incarnation of the Word of God, a blessing which is being continually extended and enlarged in the most holy Sacrament of the Eucharist. By this adorable mystery of love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, grant to us and all poor sinners your holy grace. Pour forth your holy gifts upon us and upon all redeemed souls, and in an especial manner upon the visible head of the Church, the Pope, upon all Cardinals, Bishops and Pastors of souls, upon priests, deacons and all other ministers of your sanctuary, upon those in the religious and consecrated life, and all your people. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Today as we celebrate the gift of the Body and Blood of Christ let us pray for those who are hungry, malnourished and starving. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help those who are hungry.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

FOCUS Group Celebrates the End of their 2024 Season with Mass and Lunch
St. Mary’s FOCUS (Friends Offering Care Understanding and Support) group recently hosted a beautiful chapel Mass and luncheon for its members and guests. Father Bob celebrated a beautiful Mass which was inspiring for all who attended. After Mass, the group had lunch in the Marian Room. The event was well attended and it was a great way to wrap up the spring season. If you are interested in joining the FOCUS group, please reach out to Bill Urig at dorisbilljag98@aol.com.

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY, MANHASSET HISTORY ARCHIVES PROJECT
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!
We are still attempting to collect photos, documents, and all kinds of information relating to the history of St. Mary’s, encompassing all aspects of parish activities and ministries, including the Schools of St. Mary’s.
As we look forward to the Centennial celebration of the Elementary School (2026), and the 175th Anniversary of the Parish (2028), our goal is to accumulate not only recent history, but find some missing pieces to fill in the past 170+years.
If you have any of the following from any event, ministry, or of any of the Schools of St. Mary’s, sharing these would be greatly appreciated:
Photos: Celebrations, graduations, sacraments, galas, etc.
Journals, Programs
Announcements (Bulletins not needed)
Newspaper articles
Family remembrances
Information regarding:
The Elementary and High School (s)
Past pastors, priests, nuns, principals, teachers
Clergy & Religious who were parish residents Knights of Columbus, Rosary Society, and other ministries
Any and all of these would be very helpful.
PLEASE NOTE: Any article of information which you wish to be returned can be “digitized” (scanned) and saved, then returned to you. Please include this request with your item with the contact information for its return to you. A box is located in the Parish Office to receive these valuable pieces of our parish’s history.
For more information, please contact either Mary Lou de Venoge 516-993-2706 doggonelab@msn.com or Marijo Lantier 917-496-5640 MALantier510@gmail.com

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
