Te Tirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time | June 30, 2024

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“Your abundance at the present time should supply their needs, so that their abundance may also supply your needs.” (2 Corinthians 8:14)

During the Easter Season, we read often from the Acts of the Apostles. It is a beautiful historical detailing of the early Church. We hear of the triumphs and struggles of those early Christians as they attempted to live the “Good News” in truth and fdelity. At times, they exemplifed a true group of believers sharing all they had to live as one. We also see the challenges they encountered as some became resentful and felt “less cared for.” As Catholic Christians, we know that we are commanded by Jesus to share what we have. All that we have been given, our time, talent, and treasure, are not really ours but are entrusted to us as stewards of these wonderful gifts. Scripture reminds us of the question, “what return can I make to the Lord for all He has given?” St. Paul, in our second reading, presents to us a profound, simple, yet pragmatic understanding of this sharing of gifts. In the times of our surplus, we should be cognizant of the needs of those around us and willingly share to alleviate those needs. Tis is certainly not such a difcult response on our part.

For many of us, the challenge becomes when we fnd ourselves in a position of need for assistance. Pride can often keep us from reaching out to those who may be in a position to assist. Tat pride may cause us to put on a false face to the world. A façade that keeps our needs hidden. Maybe our culture (wrongly) encourages that false sense of ferce independence that walls our hearts, lives, and needs from those around us. We know what this false pride can do! It is destructive and keeps us in the darkness of despair and fear. Tis is certainly not what Jesus wants for us.

In today’s Gospel, we are presented with two individuals who seek out help from Jesus: the woman who was plagued with an illness for twelve years and the daughter of Jairus. What becomes clear is the diferent responses of those seeking help. Te woman is almost afraid, maybe too embarrassed to ask for help. Yet she knows deep inside that it is Jesus who can heal her. Too ashamed to ask, she realizes that just by touching Jesus she can be cured. Jesus, realizing that healing has gone out of Him, seeks that person. She trembles with fear. Jesus then gently says such beautiful words of hope and encouragement, “Your faith has healed you.” She was reluctant to ask for help for herself. Jairus, on the other hand, falls at the feet of Jesus and begs for healing of his daughter. Again, faith and trust bring that healing. I always wonder would Jairus have been so public if the healing was for himself and not his daughter? We will never know but it certainly teaches us to never be afraid to come to Jesus. He wants, as the psalmist says today, “to be our Helper.” Do not let pride keep you from all Jesus and His Holy Church want to do. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, who found herself in both sides of the coin, being a wealthy charitable wife and then a poor widow, was not afraid to seek help. She says so beautifully, “Te Gate of Heaven is very low; only the humble can enter it.”

Remember the help and assistance we are called to give and receive is not just fnancial. Prayers, physical reaching out, and actions of comfort are certainly just as important.

Since I arrived at St. Mary’s, I have tried to expose the parish to many varied needs in our community and around the world. Tese are often seen in the second collection and the visitors who come to explain their ministry. Often we need those reminders of diferent “hungers” of the world.

From the Pastor’s Desk

As a parish, we ofer many and varied opportunities to receive help but also to ofer it to those in need. Our Good Samaritan House, St. Vincent de Paul Conference, Ministry of Consolation, Catholic Ministries Appeal, Prayer Groups, and many other wonderful venues to live out the ministry Jesus calls us to. I invite you to consider, in prayer, where Jesus may be inviting you to share your Time, Talent, and Treasure.

Never be afraid to seek out help, be it spiritual direction, prayers, marriage counseling, fnancial, or emotional help...whatever it may be. Te Church, the parish, and, most certainly, Jesus want to be a healing presence. Picture the world if we truly lived out St. Paul’s simple command! Having the back of others and knowing others have our back. It is certainly in the realm of possibilities. It just needs us!

I want to thank the Knights of Columbus and the faculty and students of the schools of St. Mary for the beautiful receptions we had last weekend for Fr. Dominik.

Tis weekend, we welcome our new Parochial Vicar, Fr. Anthony Saliba. Fr Anthony was here as summer help my frst year here in 2015. I know you will welcome Fr. Anthony as you have done so beautifully all the priests who assist us.

I will be away on my vacation for the month of July. During that period, Fr. Anthony has graciously agreed to write a refection for the bulletin. I appreciate his help and think it is benefcial for the parish to have diferent perspectives and views. I know you will appreciate his words.

In Jesus, Fr. Bob

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

THE NEXT SVDP MEETING IS WEDNESDAY, JULY 10TH at 7:00 PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome!

We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. Tere are no special qualifcations to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.

In today’s Gospel we see how in faith, Jarius asked Jesus to heal his daughter and how Jesus then answered his prayer. In prayer we also come to know that we are loved by God, and in that trust we ask for healing for ourselves, our loved ones and all those who are sufering. Tis week, please join with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in praying for the healing of all those who are ill and especially those who have no one to pray for them.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

Congratulations to the SMHS Class of 2024

The glorious blue skies over Marist Hall on Thursday, May 30, set the stage for the 71st Commencement Exercises for Saint Mary’s High School as the Class of 2024 processed onto Denihan Field with “Pomp and Circumstance” livening their spirited marching cadence. The evening ceremony was a wonderful celebration for all in attendance, especially the graduates, who had much to be proud of after their relentless hard work and unwavering perseverance over the past four years.

With sincere speeches from Miss Leigh Dubois, Valedictorian, and Miss Vanessa Savage, Salutatorian, every guest in attendance felt a sense of family, outstanding accomplishment, and joy radiating from the podium. Their speeches were a testament to the invaluable guidance and support provided by our dedicated faculty and staff and their parents who brought them into this world.

Leigh, who will attend Virginia Tech and study mechanical engineering, shared, “There’s no denying how much we’ve achieved. We came together and fostered friendships during a pandemic. We excelled in sports, winning championships and receiving a number of athletic scholarships. We put on theatrical performances that never failed to amaze audiences. We became trailblazers outside the classroom, spearheading our own initiatives and becoming role models to the underclassmen. We excelled academically and racked up acceptances from many of the country’s top colleges.”

Principal Gerard J. Buckley congratulated the Class of 2024, which earned nearly 17 million dollars in academic scholarships and encouraged the graduates to find their vocation as young Catholics embarking on the next chapter in their journeys. He quoted Pablo Picasso, who said, “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” He dared them not to think about the daunting questions of their impending college majors or careers but to concentrate on their gifts. He encouraged them to find their gift and embrace it, reminding them that their unique talents are what will make them stand out in the world. “Do everything in your power to become an expert as a lawyer, accountant, programmer, teacher, or member of a religious community, and after an appropriate amount of studies, find that gift...and give it away.”

As a community, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to our newest St. Mary’s Alumni Family members, the Class of 2024! We also express our deepest gratitude to God and the families of our graduates, whose unwavering support and love have been instrumental in their success. We are also grateful to our dedicated faculty and staff, who nurtured and guided these young minds, and all the community members who support our school and its mission.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

P R A Y E R S F O R A D O R A T I O N

Te Real Presence of Jesus

- St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226)

Te whole world should tremble and heaven rejoice, when Christ, the Son of the living God, is present on the altar in the hands of the priest. What wonderful majesty! What stupendous condescension!

O sublime humility! O humble sublimity!

Tat the Lord of the whole universe, God and the Son of God, should humble himself like this and hide under the form of a little bread for our salvation.

Look at God’s condescension, my brothers, and pour out your hearts before him, humble yourselves that you may be exalted by him.

Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament

- St. Pope John XXIII (1881-1963)

O Jesus, present in the Sacrament of the Altar, teach all nations to serve you with a willing heart, knowing that to serve God is to reign.

May your sacrament, O Jesus, be light to the mind, strength to the will, joy to the heart.

May it be the support for the weak, the comfort for the sufering, the wayfaring bread of salvation for the dying, and, for all, the pledge of future glory.

Good Samaritan House Announces Fall Bereavement Group

A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on September 14, 2024.

The session will run for ten consecutive weeks on Saturdays from 9:30-11:00 AM. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.

The group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling – including non-parishioners and people of other faiths. It should be noted though, St. Mary's bereavement sessions are faith based sessions that at times refer to bible verses or prayers to assist in the healing process.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.

Our lives, time, eforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.

We come from diferent places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
