From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.” (John 3:16)
Today we celebrate probably one of the most difficult and elusive of our doctrines in the Church. The doctrine of the Most Blessed Trinity can, at times, not make sense in our rational world. This teaching, as defined by the Church, has its basis in Sacred Scripture. Jesus often spoke of the unity of Himself and the Father: “The Father and I are one.”
Each Person of the Blessed Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — is a distinct reality. We DO NOT worship three gods, but rather ONE GOD in three persons. Each Person of the Blessed Trinity is part of the ONE Godhead. What can confuse us, at times, is that we refer to the Father as God; while He is certainly that, so is the Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is, in reality, a mystery of relationship. Each Person of the Trinity, in a sense, has a distinct “function and purpose,” yet they work as one.
The Father is the Creator who has prepared the world for the coming of the Redeemer. Throughout the Scriptures, the hand of the Father has guided, protected, and blessed the people He has chosen as His own. In Jesus, the Son, we see the WORD of the Father that takes on flesh and lives in our human world. Yet as much as St. Paul tells us that “Jesus emptied Himself and took the form of a slave,” He was fully human and fully God at all times. Jesus came into the world to be the way of our salvation through His death on the Cross. The Holy Spirit is the power or breath of God that blows through our world and our lives. In the power of the Holy Spirit, we are given the “grace” to profess Jesus as Lord. This Spirit or “breath of God,” in Hebrew referred to as the “ruah,” was the creative life-giving force that called the world into existence. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states about the Father, “The Word of God (Jesus) and His Breath are at the origin of the beginning and life of all creation.” Through the gifts, given and shared by the Holy Spirit, we fulfill our life as believers. That Spirit continues to hover above and in us to strengthen the profession of the Lordship of Jesus.
So we look at each Person of the Trinity and we can see a unity of life but also of “function.” Each works with the others while retaining His own identity and individuality. What we can see is that the relationship is based on love.
A love that is not jealous of the others’ work, but finds joy in what they can contribute to make it more profound and powerful. In the power of that self-giving love, we see our own call. As Catholic Christians, we are called to walk in the path of the Trinity. We are invited to use our gifts to continue the work of the Most Holy Trinity. As the Father, Son, and Spirit empty themselves for the good of the other, we are called to use what has been given to us, not only for the glory of God, but also for the good of God’s Holy people. Our mission is to open our hearts to the needs around us and to be the instruments of the Trinity in our world.
Since my arrival, I have tried to open and expose us to many of the charities and missionary works of the Church. Even our second collections, by themselves, are a way of pointing out the importance of each. Love and faith call us to serve, support, and comfort those who come into our lives. The relationship of love that we celebrate today is one that has to be as self-giving as we see lived out in the Trinity. Lived for us by how we love those around us. As we celebrate the Most Holy Trinity, let us not so much focus on its doctrinal meaning, but rather embrace what the self-giving teaches and means for our own lives.
In Jesus, Fr.
Bob

Gospel: John 6:51-58
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven.”
Question for Adults:
How do I prepare myself to receive Christ in the Eucharist each week?
Question for Children:
What are some ways I can share the love of Jesus with others?
The Most Reverend John O. Barres, Bishop of Rockville Centre has declared the month of June in the Diocese of Rockville Centre as the Month of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, proclaiming to the world that “God is Love.”
In an effort to celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and to express to the People of God in the Diocese of Rockville Centre the true definition and nature of Love according to God’s design, the Diocese plans to celebrate June 2023 as a month devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The theme for this month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is, “God is Love” from 1 John 4:8,16.
Bishop Barres said:
“Our hope is to renew and advance the beautiful tradition of contemplating God’s love for humanity – shown so powerfully in the Pierced Heart of the Savior, during this time. We need His love, as does every dimension of the global public square. Therefore, under the theme God is Love, we pray that a renewed devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus this June will open us to God’s love and moral teaching. As our Lord says in John’s Gospel: ‘If you love me, keep my commandments.’”
(John 14:15)
All are welcome to attend a special diocesan Mass to celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus at St. Agnes Cathedral on Friday, June 16 at 7:30 PM. Bishop Barres will be the principal celebrant and homilist. For more information visit drvc.org.

The Schools of Saint Mary Elementary Students Collaborate in Learning Exercises
Some of the best days at school are when grades learn together! Mrs. Buckley’s eighth-grade Modern Language students recently had the opportunity to visit with our Kindergarten classes and worked collaboratively to teach words in Spanish to express emotions. The eager young students broke off into their sessions with their middle school student-teachers to develop their vocabulary and pronunciation skills, while the older students joyfully shared their knowledge while discovering that collaborative work builds relationships with others, inspires learning, and boosts confidence amongst their peers, ultimately making the educational experience successful for everyone.
Baccalaureate Mass and Banquet for the Class of 2023
On May 24, the Saint Mary’s High School Class of 2023 gathered with family, administrators, and faculty to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist for one last time together in the Church of St. Mary. Following the Baccalaureate Mass, the Senior Banquet kicked off in Wiest Hall to honor the students’ accomplishments. Several soon-to-be graduates presented beautiful messages to all in attendance. Jillian Mancz ’23 shared a particularly poignant viewpoint remembering her formation at St. Mary’s.
“Throughout the four years at this school, one of the most significant aspects that have stuck out to me was the love of our Lord, Jesus Christ, that each individual holds in their heart. I saw the love of Christ in every faculty member and student. As a community, we would join together to worship our savior, and with that, the presence of Christ was always apparent. An additional lesson was the importance of hard work and perseverance. High school can be one of the most challenging times in a person’s life. We are all learning who we are as people while striving to prepare for our future dreams. I can truly say that I know the type of person I am today and what my goals are. We are all prepared to reach our dreams because Saint Mary’s helped us persevere.”
Principal Gerard Buckley said, “I cannot imagine a better statement from one of our students showing how fully formed she is before heading out into the world. We wish the same for all our graduates. As our pastor, Father Bob shared during Mass - “Go, and set the world on fire!”

NEXT SVDP MEETING IS TUESDAY, JUNE 6TH at 7:00 PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome! We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.
As we celebrate the mystery of the Trinity we also realize the mystery of how much God loves and cares for us each day. Believing in this our lives can then overflow in thanksgiving and praise. Your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box will help the poor to believe in the mystery of God’s love for them.
Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

CREATOR SPIRITUS (Come, Creator Spirit)
Come, Holy Spirit, Creator blest, and in our souls take up Thy rest; come with Thy grace and heavenly aid to fill the hearts which Thou hast made.
O comforter, to Thee we cry,
O heavenly gift of God Most High,
O fount of life and fire of love, and sweet anointing from above. Thou in Thy sevenfold gifts are known; Thou, finger of God’s hand we own;
Thou, promise of the Father, Thou Who dost the tongue with power imbue. Kindle our sense from above, and make our hearts o’erflow with love
with patience firm and virtue high the weakness of our flesh supply. Far from us drive the foe we dread, and grant us Thy peace instead; so shall we not, with Thee for guide, turn from the path of life aside. Oh, may Thy grace on us bestow the Father and the Son to know; and Thee, through endless times confessed, of both the eternal Spirit blest. Now to the Father and the Son, Who rose from death, be glory given, with Thou, O Holy Comforter, henceforth by all in earth and heaven. Amen.

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
