St. Mary’s Celebrates the Solemnity of Corpus Christi with an Outdoor Eucharistic Procession

On Sunday, June 2nd, faithful parishioners and parish clergy walked with Christ to commemorate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. The outdoor procession took place after the 12:00 Noon Mass. Thanks to the Knights of Columbus and the Music Ministry for contributing their time and talent to this beautiful event. This annual tradition dates back to The Council of Trent (1545-1563) when it was solemnly approved and recommended that the procession on Corpus Christi should be a public profession of the Catholic faith in the real presence of Christ in the Holy Sacrament.

The Rosary Society’s Statue of Our Lady of Fatima

On June 13th, we celebrate the second apparition of Our Lady to the three shepherd children near Fatima, Portugal in 1917. The three children, Lucia dos Santos, Francisco, and Jacinta Mario, reported seeing an angel. During the apparition Mary told the children to pray the Rosary daily in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary. She also asked the children to add the Fatima prayer. In 1929, Mary appeared to Lucia privately and asked her to consecrate Russia to her Immaculate Heart. The Catholic Church officially recognized the Fatima events as worthy of belief in 1930.

In 2017, the centennial anniversary of the apparitions of our Lady at Fatima, St. Mary’s Rosary Society received the gift of a beautiful statue of Our Lady of Fatima. This statue is a traveling statue, and came to us with the requirement that its presence be shared throughout our parish. The statue of Our Lady has been “visiting” with Rosarians and St. Mary’s friends and families in their homes since that time. For those whom Mary has visited, she has brought peace, hope, comfort, strength and renewed faith.

As the Rosary Society continues this ministry, please let us know if you would like a special visit with the statue of Our Lady of Fatima in your home. For more information please contact Rosarian Mary Lou de Venoge by Email at: doggonelab@msn.com

Saturday, June 17th - The Immaculate Heart of Mary

This feast is celebrated on the Saturday following the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. “The Immaculate Heart of Mary is a special form of devotion to the physical heart of Mary. It is Mary’s love for God, her love for her Son, and her love for all people that draws us to want to study and to imitate her. In his Gospel, St. Luke mentioned this devotion twice, saying that Mary kept what Jesus was saying and doing in her heart. Mary’s Immaculate Heart is typically pictured with flames representing her burning or undying love. Her Heart is encircled by roses or lilies symbolizing her joys and her purity, and oftentimes, a sword pierces the heart reflecting the prophecy of Simeon in the Gospel of St. Luke. Mary’s Heart is a symbol of her compassion and her sinlessness.” - The Illustrated Book of Mary

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

O ETERNAL TRINITY

a prayer of St. Catherine of Siena

Eternal God, eternal Trinity, you have made the blood of Christ so precious through his sharing in your divine nature. You are a mystery as deep as the sea; the more I search, the more I find, and the more I find the more I search for you. But I can never be satisfied; what I receive will ever leave me desiring more. When you fill my soul, I have an even greater hunger, and I grow more famished for your light. I desire above all to see you, the true light, as you really are.

I have tasted and seen the depth of your mystery and the beauty of your creation with the light of my understanding. I have clothed myself with your likeness and have seen what I shall be. Eternal Father, you have given me a share in your power and the wisdom that Christ claims as his own, and your Holy Spirit has given me the desire to love you. You are my Creator, eternal Trinity, and I am your creature. You have made of me a new creation in the blood of your Son, and I know that you are moved with love at the beauty of your creation, for you have enlightened me.

Eternal Trinity, Godhead, mystery deep as the sea, you could give me no greater gift than the gift of yourself. For you are a fire ever burning and never consumed, which itself consumes all the selfish love that fills my being. Yes, you are a fire that takes away the coldness, illuminates the mind with its light and causes me to know your truth. By this light, reflected as it were in a mirror, I recognize that you are the highest good, one we can neither comprehend nor fathom. And I know that you are beauty and wisdom itself. The food of angels, you gave yourself to man in the fire of your love.

You are the garment which covers our nakedness, and in our hunger, you are a satisfying food, for you are sweetness and in you there is no taste of bitterness, O triune God!

The Diocese of Rockville Centre Celebrates June as the Month of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Most Reverend John O. Barres, Bishop of Rockville Centre has again declared the month of June in the Diocese of Rockville Centre as the Month of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, proclaiming to the world that “God is Love.”

Bishop Barres says:

“Our hope is to renew and advance the beautiful tradition of contemplating God’s love for humanity –shown so powerfully in the Pierced Heart of the Savior, during this time. We need His love, as does every dimension of the global public square. Therefore, under the theme God is Love, we pray that a renewed devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus this June will open us to God’s love and moral teaching. As our Lord says in John’s Gospel: ‘If you love me, keep my commandments.’” (John 14:15)

Cheerful Catholic Academic Luncheon Tea held for the Daughters of Mary

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

The 7th and 8th-grade girls of Saint Mary’s Middle School were recently invited to a beautiful luncheon tea sponsored by the Daughters of Mary. This ministry is dedicated to fostering a strong sense of community among young women, helping them grow spiritually and discover their true purpose in the eyes of God and our Blessed Mother, Mary. Through prayer, service, and friendship, members discern their mission in our community and the world while striving to find fulfillment in their Catholic faith. Under the leadership of St. Mary’s Rosary Society members, the Daughters of Mary meetings are filled with mentorship, fun activities, and opportunities for friendship among young ladies at the middle and high school levels. We are grateful to the Rosarians who hosted this event for the girls, and we look forward to a great new year ahead this September!

Ira Hunt Named Coach of the Year

Ira Hunt is no rookie when it comes to coaching men’s basketball. He fell in love with the sport in the third grade and made it a large part of his life through his desire to be a better player, hard work, and willingness to learn every step of the way.

Born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Coach Hunt understands the need for our children today to have support, encouragement, and positive role models in their daily lives. He does this precisely with every child he works with, whether coaching or training.

Ira Hunt’s dedication to coaching men’s basketball is unparalleled. With a tenure of 19 years at Saint Mary’s High School, he started as an assistant coach and then spent a good portion of that time coaching the Freshman team. In addition to coaching at the school, he founded Xpress Training, a basketball training and mentoring program. This season marked his fifth year at the helm of the Boys’ varsity team at St. Mary’s, and the word is spreading quickly about their success after an excellent run in the league, which took the team straight to the semi-finals. Coach Hunt’s transition into the Varsity role was not without its challenges, including a lack of experienced players and a demanding schedule. However, his strategic planning, rigorous training, and unwavering belief in his team allowed him to overcome these obstacles. His leadership, marked by grit and determination, inspired the athletes to respond to respond equally, fueling their success. The Gaels fans, too, responded with resounding accolades. The storied success of the school’s Athletic Program turned heads again this year, so much so that the Nassau Suffolk Catholic High School Athletic Association League named Hunt Coach of the Year. Well done, Coach Hunt! Your dedication and spirit are truly inspiring.

Coach Hunt’s basketball camps continue to headline the Summer Camps at the School. He will bring his basketball expertise to three one-weeklong sessions. Visit saintmaryshs.org for more.

Good Samaritan House Announces Fall Bereavement Group

A weekly support group for the bereaved and those struggling with unresolved loss will begin on September 14, 2024.

The session will run for ten consecutive weeks on Saturdays from 9:30-11:00 AM. The primary goals of the group are to help the participants learn about the grief process, develop skills to manage their grief, and help them adjust to living in a world without the deceased.

The group is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, partner, parent, or sibling – including non-parishioners and people of other faiths. It should be noted though, St. Mary's bereavement sessions are faith based sessions that at times refer to bible verses or prayers to assist in the healing process.

We are still attempting to collect photos, documents, and all kinds of information relating to the history of St. Mary’s, encompassing all aspects of parish activities and ministries, including the Schools of St. Mary’s.

As we look forward to the Centennial celebration of the Elementary School (2026), and the 175th Anniversary of the Parish (2028), our goal is to accumulate not only recent history, but find some missing pieces to fill in the past 170+years.

If you have any of the following from any event, ministry, or of any of the Schools of St. Mary’s, sharing these would be greatly appreciated:

Express Your Gratitude to Dad: The Outcome Will Be Experiencing Love in Action

“For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.” (1 Thessalonians 2:11–12)

The modern day Dad has many roles to fulfill. He works, he cares for children, he transports children to sports and other activities, and some cook and clean. It is what the 70’s and 80’s working woman experienced, and the modern day working woman is still experiencing. One trendy statement sums it up: “You have come a long way.” The same can be said about the modern day Man!

It is important to let Dad know you are grateful for all that he does. When gratitude is expressed, it creates a positive mindset for Dad as well as for the one who is expressing the special feelings. It offers Dad a positive mindset and outlook on life in knowing that those you love can see you and your positive impact on them.

When you express gratitude, your mental health, as well as the one receiving the messages, improves. You can experience less stress, anxiety, and depression. As a result, you can experience emotional resilience. This is a win-win for both the giver and receiver. Parents, by teaching your children, through your example, the lesson of expressing gratitude, you are enabling them to feel more empowered and calmer in their interactions with you and others.

When you express gratitude, relationships get stronger because you can feel the kindness and support of those you love. For sure, when you give kindness and support, it is usually returned with positive interest. Kindness begets kindness. Expressing gratitude through prayer together is a good family activity. Below you will find a prayer for Dad that you can say not only on Father’s Day. Make it part of your daily routine. Include Mom in that prayer, too. I was visiting with one of my sons and his family. He, his wife, and their very young children practiced circle and prayer time together. It went like this: I am grateful for one thing that happened today, and each person says it. I am grateful for the gifts that God has given me, and each

say something. We all love each other and then the family does a group hug. It was beautiful to experience this show of love and gratitude of love, life, and God.

Maybe this Father’s Day begin a new tradition and have your children express their gratitude for their dad and then going forward do some activity that resembles what I just described for practicing gratitude daily. Doing this will make for a happier existence and adjustment to life.

Happy Father’s Day to all the Fathers and Grandfathers from the St. Mary’s Mental Health Ministry.

Lord, thank you for my Dad. Thank you for all that he does for me and our family. He helps me learn all what he knows. He has patience and shows me much affection. I love being with my Dad and I appreciate him in every way. What I love about him so much is he takes the time to listen to me and help me in every way. I am so lucky you gave him to me, my dear Lord. Amen

Today, Jesus looking around those seated in the circle said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” Through your almsgiving you are indeed doing the will of God and your gift placed in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box indeed brings Christ’s love and compassion to the poor.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. In this sequel to Emily Hanlon’s phenomenal Christian fiction debut, Who Am I to Judge?, the scatterbrained octogenarian sleuth, Marya, and her sensible sidekick, Martha, are back in action!

“Fans of classic whodunnits are in for a treat!

Hanlon’s lyrical, evocative language ensnares the reader, bringing them into her tapestry of mystery and intrigue. Highly recommended!”
