From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not perish, but have life eternal.” (John 3:16)

How often have we seen this quote from Scripture held up on signs at sporting events and other occasions? It is a great sentiment, but have we ever pondered what these words truly mean? This Jesus that we worship as God has come for a purpose. His purpose is that we may believe in Him and have eternal life. To believe in Jesus, we must be willing to embrace the light that Jesus has come to proclaim. Those who reject Him, the Scriptures tell us, prefer the darkness of sin. The message is pretty clear. Jesus is the way to salvation. I dare say we all believe that. Yet confusion and the human will can get in the way and begin to blur the line of what is God’s will for us.

One of the misconceptions for us as Catholics is that we can think that salvation is something we can earn by our good works and actions of faith. The misconception is that the more “good we do” will GAIN for us heaven. St. Paul tells us the complete opposite. In his letter to the Ephesians we hear,

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God. It is owing to His favor (God) that salvation is yours through faith. It is not from you, it is God’s gift; it is not from works, so no one may boast.”

Our gift of Eternal Life is a free gift from God in Jesus. Our works don’t earn us salvation, yet why are we called to pray, worship, and do acts of kindness and generosity? Well, the good works we do are our response to God’s invitation to love. If we wish to receive the gift of Life Eternal, then we have a responsibility to respond to God in how Jesus has called us to act. It is, like Jesus did with His whole life, a giving over of will to the Father that as we pray in The Lord’s Prayer each day: “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” That will of the Father doesn’t happen without the cooperation of those who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. If we have accepted that Jesus died for our sins, then our love for Jesus demands a response. That response is how we live our lives. So prayer, worship, living a life of holiness, and giving alms to the poor and needy become not what we do to receive something, but rather what we do BECAUSE WE HAVE RECEIVED SOMETHING. It is the response back in love to the God who has offered us all things. Our good works, necessary to our salvation, must first spring from the fact that we profess Jesus as Lord. It flows from the heart that has embraced Jesus. St. Ignatius of Loyola says it so simply and beautifully: “It is not hard to obey when we love the one whom we obey.”

As we journey this Lent, let us ask ourselves why we are in Church. Why do we do the good works? Why do we pray? If we see it as reward for actions, then let us purify ourselves of that pride and kneel humbly before God. In that humbleness, let us ask for the grace to do the good works simply because they please God and are commanded by Jesus Himself. And may our generous lives reflect the fact that we are offered salvation in Jesus by the grace of God and through the power of the Holy Spirit who enlivens our faith

The beginning of my homily a couple of weeks ago highlighted an ethnic group. I am sorry if this offended anyone. That is certainly never my intent.

I encourage all to attend daily Mass and go to confession this Lenten Season. A reminder that Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday in the Church at 7:00 PM.

In Jesus, our Suffering Lord, Fr. Bob

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

Performing Arts Students Make a Splash!

The Performing Arts Program of the Schools of Saint Mary recently presented The Little Mermaid Jr., a timeless and uplifting production that dazzled audiences. Students from the Elementary and Middle Schools delivered unforgettable performances that will be remembered for years to come. With every character, each act, and musical number, theatergoers were transported into the under-the-sea story that has captured the hearts of many over time - and now by the incredibly young and talented cast of St. Mary's!

Under the direction of Mr. Brian Stalter, the students rehearsed for many weeks leading to the show's premiere on March 1 with a repeat full-house performance the following night. We extend our gratitude to the cast, crew, and all those who helped make this production come to life on stage! We are truly blessed by your God-given talents.

RCIA and Adult Faith Formation

As the RCIA group, now referred to as the “Elect,” is being prayed for during the Sunday Masses, they are anticipating the Easter Vigil with joy when they will become full members of the Church. Do keep them in your prayers.

Our Lenten Prayer Group Meets on Tuesday at 1:00 PM in the Msgr. Sharp Library

The Lenten Prayer group meets each Tuesday and prays over the upcoming Sunday readings. They find the Mass to be more meaningful to them through these sessions. We welcome anyone who would like to join in for the remaining weeks.

For more information about RCIA, the prayer group, and other aduly faith formation programs, please contact Sr. Teresa at 516-627-0385, ext. 1010. Her office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM and other times by appointment.

First Communicants Make Their Banners and Prepare for First Reconciliation

First Communicants are working on their Communion banners. It is wonderful to see the children assemble the sacramental signs of the Eucharist in a visible way. We are also preparing the children for the sacrament of First Reconciliation. The Catholic faith life is filled with a never ending desire to love God and place all trust in Him.

We continue to pray for all students receiving sacraments in the spring.

Lenten blessings, Mrs. Granieri

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

In today’s Gospel, God demonstrates great love for us by sending his Son so that we may believe in him.

We demonstrate our great love for God by doing good works: reaching out to others, acting in justice and charity. Through your almsgiving you are performing a good work; far greater than you think. Know that your nickel, dime, quarter or dollar is multiplied by coins placed by others in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Two Lenten Prayers

O gracious Master, infuse in our hearts the spotless light of Your Divine Wisdom and open the eyes of our mind that we may understand the teachings of Your Gospel. Instill in us also the fear of Your blessed commandments, so that having curbed all carnal desires, we may lead a spiritual life, both thinking and doing everything to please You. For You, O Christ, our God, are the enlightenment of our souls and bodies; and to You we render glory, together with Your eternal Father, and with Your all holy, life-creating Spirit, now and ever, and forever. Amen.

Dear Lord Jesus,

by Your Passion and Resurrection

You brought life to the world. But the glory of the Resurrection came only after the sufferings of the Passion.

You laid down Your life willingly and gave up everything for us. Your body was broken and fastened to a Cross, Your clothing became the prize of soldiers, your blood ebbed slowly but surely away, and Your Mother was entrusted to the beloved disciple.

Stretched out on the Cross, deprived of all earthly possessions and human aid, You cried out to Your Father that the end had come. You had accomplished the work given You, and You committed into His hands, as a perfect gift, the little life that remained to You.

Lord, teach me to accept all afflictions after the example You have given. Let me place my death in Yours and my weakness in Your abandonment, Take hold of me with Your love, that same foolish love that knew no limits, and let me offer myself to the Father with You so that I may rise with You to eternal life. Amen.
