From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners, This great and holy season of Lent is a time that the Church offers to us for deepening our relationship with the Lord by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, but also as a time to encounter the Lord through our sacramental life. Confession, reading of Sacred Scripture, and the Stations of the Cross are some of the moments of Liturgy that focus on our relationship with Jesus. The church building should be seen in a context of starkness. During this time, for example, flowers are not permitted in the church. This minimalism should help to remove any distraction and, like a desert experience, draw our focus to what is truly necessary and important. At Mass, we use the longer Penitential Rite with the addition of the Kyrie, eléison in ancient Greek. The Holy, Holy and the Lamb of God are chanted in Latin, the mother language of the Roman Rite. These changes from routine are meant to make us more aware of the uniqueness of this season. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal recommends that as the Church moves closer to the great celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord at Easter, our joyful anticipation should increase. One of the practices of the Church, which unfortunately has fallen out of favor, is the covering of crosses and images of the saints. This practice is being looked at again as an external action that can touch our internal relationship with the Lord. It is called for to begin on the Fifth Sunday of Lent, which used to be the beginning of what was known as the Passiontide. The term has been removed and now joined to Palm Sunday (the following weekend) with the more inclusive name of Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. While it is no longer called the Passiontide, the readings of the 5th Sunday of Lent do speak of the suffering of Jesus. The rubrics can guide us in the practices of this season.. In the Roman Missal, we find the instruction, “In the Dioceses of the United States, the practice of covering crosses and images throughout the church from [the fifth] Sunday [of Lent] should be observed. Crosses remain covered until the end of the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, but other images remain covered until the beginning of the Easter Vigil.” It might seem strange that during the most sacred time of year, Catholics cover everything that is beautiful in their churches, even the crucifix. Shouldn’t we be looking at the painful scene at Calvary while we listen to the Passion narrative on Palm Sunday? While it may appear counterintuitive to veil statues and images during the final weeks of Lent, the Church recommends this practice to heighten our senses and build a longing for Easter Sunday within us. It is a tradition that should not only be carried out in our local parish, but can also be a fruitful activity for the “domestic church.” The Church will certainly look different and maybe even strange at first, but these, hopefully, will become teaching moments. First of all, we use veils to alert us to the special time that we are in. When we walk into church and notice everything is covered, we immediately know that something is different. These last two weeks of Lent are meant to be a time of immediate preparation for the Sacred Triduum and the veils are a powerful reminder to get ready. Secondly, the veils focus our attention on the words being said at Mass. When we listen to the Passion narrative, our senses are allowed to focus on the striking words from the Gospel and truly enter into the scene. Third, the Church uses veils to produce a heightened sense of anticipation for Easter Sunday. And therein lies the whole point: the veils are not meant to be there forever. The images need to be unveiled; it is unnatural for them to be covered.

From the Pastor’s Desk (con’t.) The unveiling before the Easter Vigil is a great reminder of our own life on earth. We live in a “veiled” world, in exile from our true home. It is only through our own death that the veil is lifted and we are finally able to see the beauty of everything in our lives. I encourage you to use this tradition at home. Cover any of your crosses or images of the saints and explain it to the young ones. This tradition can be used as a learning tool for children. Explain this custom to your children and encourage your family to engage in this Lenten practice. It is easy for children to become distracted by the things we receive at Easter. But Lent is an important time of preparation for the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ that deserves much more attention. It is also important to see the connection between the domestic (home) church and the worshipping church. This, like the Advent Wreath, can become a great connection for our young people. You may want to consider this beautiful practice. When you come into church on the Fifth Sunday of Lent ( March 2nd and 3rd) these beautiful aids for Lent will be in place. I would like to thank Fr. Dominik for coordinating with Ann Welsh and for the beautiful coverings she made. A reminder that the Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday evening in the church at 7:00 PM. In Jesus, our Suffering Lord, Fr. Bob

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament A Prayer for Lent Loving Father,

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church

I invite you into my life today and make myself available to you. Help me to become the-best-version-of-myself by seeking your will and becoming a living example of your love in the world. Open my heart to the areas of my life that need to change in order for me to carry out the mission and experience the joy you have imagined for my life. Inspire me to live the Catholic faith in ways that are dynamic and engaging. Show me how to best get involved in the life of my parish. Make our community hungry for best practices and continuous learning. Give me courage when I am afraid, hope when I am discouraged, and clarity in times of decision. Teach me to enjoy uncertainty and lead your Church to become all you imagined it would be for the people of our times. Amen.

This is an effort aimed at “changing hearts and minds.” The Spring 2022 campaign begins on Ash Wednesday, March 2nd, and runs through April 10th, Palm Sunday. This is truly a lifesaving measure, as there are “turnarounds” (women who change their minds at the facility) in each campaign. The organization’s website describes it as “an internationally coordinated 40-day campaign that aims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and a peaceful all-day vigil in front of abortion businesses.” (40DaysForLife.com) In our area, the local campaign of peaceful, prayerful witness will take place 6 days each week – from Monday through Saturday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at: Public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood 540 Fulton Avenue Hempstead, New York More details are available at 40DaysForLife.com; find Hempstead NY through the “Location” search. The Schools of Saint Mary March Madness Sweeps Across St. Mary’s The Saint Mary’s Elementary School Girls’ basketball season came to a close during a hard-fought loss in the Semi-Finals to Long Beach Catholic earlier this month. Still, the team and many other students, families, and teachers rallied around the Boys’ team as they took on Saint Agnes in last week’s Catholic Middle School Championship game held in the Brother Kenneth Robert FMS Gymnasium. It was a bit of a nail-biter at the end with 4 minutes to go, and the score tied at 53 each, but the boys were able to pull ahead and defeat the STAGs. The final score was 64-55! Thanks to all of our athletes, coaches, and parents for their determination and commitment to this year’s season. We’re also grateful to everyone who came out to support the teams. Way to go, St. Mary’s!

State Championship Glory for the Gaels The shimmering road to glory for the Lady Gaels continued after the team defeated the Hawks from Cardinal O’Hara (Buffalo) in the Girls State Basketball SemiFinals on March 11. The team advanced to the finals to play just two days later to face the Crusaders of Msgr. Scanlan High School (Bronx) on Sunday afternoon. With an excellent fan base in attendance and yet another incredibly well-played game, the St. Mary’s High School Girls Basketball team achieved their goal. The Gaels claimed their victory over the Crusaders 59-42 receiving the crown – no longer a dream as the New York State CHSAA Girls “AA” Basketball Champions! With the winning combination of coaches and athletes, our entire St. Mary’s community cannot be more proud of the teamwork, determination, and skills witnessed throughout this whole season. And in return for the support the team received, they immediately brought the trophies to the stands – celebrating the storied win with their loyal fans and family members at Hofstra! Way to go, ladies! Way to go, St. Mary’s!

A Lenten Reflection by Father Collins MY JOURNEY THUS FAR Beloved, I thought you would be interested in getting to know a bit more about me and my life’s journey thus far. So, I am giving you a break on the GIVE-FOR and FOR-GIVE stuff. I believe that some background knowledge of the writer always elicits connectivity with the reader and establishes credibility as well. So, please find a bit about me and how I have gotten here in the subsequent paragraphs. I hope you wouldn’t mind it being a bit lengthy. While all faithful Catholics were in Church singing Hosanna to the Son of David on that bright and sunny Palm Sunday of April 15, 1984, I was kicking to break out from Mummy Elizabeth’s womb. As early as age fourteen, just about three months after completing basic school, I responded to the call to take an entrance examination that would let me enter the school I had become so fond of just because of its name, Saint Hubert. Together with some altar boys, we used to visit the rectory on Saturdays to clean, wash and iron for the pastor. We would also use the occasion to do rehearsals, appoint servers for each day of the coming week, serve at funerals or weddings (if there were any) as well as discuss any other business of ours. On such occasions, the seniors among us would share their high school experiences with great delight. Interestingly, these conversations were what would sew the seed for my seminary formation and eventually, my priestly vocation. Two of the seniors were in Saint Hubert Minor Seminary (High School Seminary) and the mention of the name Saint Hubert was all I needed to ignite my desire to be there also. So, when the announcement was made in church to register for an entrance exam to Saint Hubert, there were no hesitations on my part at all. I just loved the school for its name; little did I know it was to form me for the Catholic Priesthood. As the only boy and the second of four children, one would think that my parents would object to my becoming a priest, but that wasn’t the case. Mummy was highly enthusiastic; Daddy cared more about whether it was what I would like to be, and my three sisters cared less about the whole show. So, I started the journey to the priesthood on that note at that tender age with the first formation in Saint Hubert Minor Seminary. This was still at the high school level so the Seminary combined faith formation programs suitable for seminarians at that level with ordinary High School programs pursued in all other High Schools throughout the country. The formation was lovely and lively, but quite lengthy. We had to do one preparatory year plus one post-high school year because of the seminary formation and that made it two years longer than public high school. The experience of public school classmates and friends going ahead of me on the educational ladder came with some frustration, but I kept moving on. Saint Paul’s Major Seminary took over my formation with three years of Philosophical studies, but also with a combination of programs for a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Religions in affiliation with the University of Ghana. Then I had to continue with Theological studies in Saint Peter’s Regional Seminary for another four years. Guess what, the combination never stopped. Programs for a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education with the University of Winneba were also done alongside seminary formation programs. As if that was not enough, we had to, in the final year of theological studies, take a comprehensive exam for another bachelor’s in Theology in affiliation with the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome. It was after all these thirteen years of seminary formation that I was finally ordained at the age of 27 on August 6, 2011, for the Diocese of Konongo-Mampong in Ghana. It was just a non-stop process and it all had to be done in the English language which is the official language of Ghana. This has helped a lot with my communication here in America. My first assignment after ordination was the Parish of Saint Augustine, in Agogo, Ghana, as a Parochial Vicar (in other words as an Associate Pastor) for three years. From there, I was assigned as Formator and Tutor at the Diocesan High School Seminary called St. Joseph Seminary Senior High School. It was after five years of ministry in that seminary that the Vicar-General (of blessed memory) asked me to apply for further studies at any school of my choice. My first pastor had studied at St. John’s University here in the States so it was the first school to come to my mind. Therefore, after applying and gaining admission to St. John’s, I got in touch with my cousin, Rev. Fr. Dr. Collins Andrew Adutwum, (now an Associate Pastor at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Centreport) who also connected me with the Diocese of Rockville Centre for pastoral ministry.

A Lenten Reflection by Father Collins I arrived here in the States on June 15, 2019, and I was assigned as an Associate Pastor at St. William the Abbot Church, Seaford. Then, after two and a half years there, I was transferred here to St. Mary’s to replace Fr. Jude who was called back to his home country in January. It has been quite a different life here and certainly with higher standards in all aspects. There has been a whole lot to learn, a lot of changes to adapt to - the temperatures, the accent, the food, even how the priestly ministry is exercised here and the general socio-cultural norms. But I am grateful because I have experienced warm welcomes, incredible generosity, and radical hospitality from the diocese as a whole, from the priests and religious, and, of course, parishioners in both parishes. So, all in all, I would say with Peter: “Lord, it is good for us to be here.” This, then, has been my journey thus far and this is all I could GIVE-FOR you about me. If there was anything of interest to you, but I left it out, please FOR-GIVE me. Thank you. - Fr. Collins

Religious Education Dear St. Mary Families, Last week, Confirmandi attended a retreat sharing the spiritual tenets of the Catholic faith. The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal led a beautiful discussion about God’s nature and desire for relationship. First, Sister Pieta shared the ways in which God speaks in the world today. Sister Theresa encouraged the students to devote time each day in prayer to know God and to keep asking questions about his divine plan. Each Postulant then shared her own personal story on the journey to hear God’s voice. Eucharistic Adoration in the Seminary’s chapel was majestic, and experienced with prayer and song. We also made time for fun fellowship that brought smiles on every face! We are so grateful to the Franciscan Sisters, Fr. Bob, and Fr. Dominik who made the retreat experience truly blessed. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Sr. Martin Therese and Mr. Calzetta for their joyful support. And to our devoted Catechists, thank you for always giving the gift of time to support the St. Mary Religious Education program. Come Holy Spirit! Fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love! Blessings, Mrs. Granieri

Rosary Society Our Mission Statement: The Rosary Society fosters devotion to Mary through prayer and good works for causes that would be dear to her heart Invest 20 minutes of your day to pray the Rosary, and see the difference it will make in your life. If you would like the Rosarians to pray for a special intention, please e-mail us at rosarysociety@stmary.ws.

PRAYING THE ROSARY DURING LENT Pray a decade for the intentions of your life of penance during Lent. Then, spend a few moments determining what you will do: eat less food or less-rich food (perhaps the traditional abstinence from meat or animal products), spend less time in sleep (even just getting up when your alarm goes off a quarter hour earlier than usual to start the day with an act of penance), allow yourself less of other comforts like long hot showers or an extra pillow in bed. None of these would kill us, and they help to remind us of the reality of penance when the body joins the soul’s prayer in longing for God. - Father Hugh Barbour, O. Praem., catholic.com

Lenten Day of Recollection Wednesday, March 23rd Our Lady of Grace Spiritual Center Registration will begin at 10:00 AM Please join us as we pray Our Lady’s Rosary, celebrate Mass and listen to a presentation by Father Dominik. Luncheon is included, with a suggested donation of $40.00 payable at the door. IMPORTANT! Please remember to RSVP to rosarysociety@stmary.ws or to Marijo at 917-496-5640

March 25th is Feast of The Annunciation Lady Day is the traditional name in some English-speaking countries of the Feast of the Annunciation which commemorates the visit of the archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, during which he informed her that she would be the mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In England, Lady Day was New Year’s Day (the new year actually began on March 25th) from 1155 until 1752, when the Gregorian calendar was adopted in Great Britain. From then on, the first of January became the official start of the year in England, Wales and Ireland. The Annunciation is narrated in the Bible in the Gospel of St. Luke, Chapter 1. The angel Gabriel was sent to meet Mary, a virgin in Nazareth, Galilee. Mary was betrothed at the time to a man named Joseph. The angel Gabriel hailed Mary and told her not to fear because she had found grace with God. He told her she would give birth to the Son of God. When she replied that she was a virgin, he reassured her that the Holy Spirit would come upon her. He also informed her that her barren cousin, Elizabeth, would conceive a son as well, even in her old age. Mary responded, “be it done to me according to thy word.” Joseph also received an annunciation later, as detailed in Matthew 1:18. The Feast of the Annunciation celebrates God’s entrance into the human world through Jesus and Mary’s willingness to accept God’s command. Holy Spirit, you spoke to Mary through the angel to invite her to participate in the plan of salvation.Though she questioned how it was possible for her to become the mother of the Messiah, and she knew she faced rejection from Joseph and others, she gave You her “yes.” With the help of Mary’s prayers, I want to become fully willing to say “yes” to my part in giving Christ to the world. Encourage me when I don’t understand what You are asking. Bless me with the grace of hearing your call, and the courage to trust in Your plan. Let it be done to me according to Your will. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for me. Amen.
