From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“Father, I have sinned against heaven and you.” (Luke 15:21) The word “prodigal” means “wasteful or squandering.” It is used to describe one who wastes gifts and resources. The beginning of the parable tells how the son “squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.” It is interesting and poignant that the father allows his younger son to leave. Sometimes the worst thing God can do is to give us what we want in order to show us that our desires can’t always bring satisfaction. The prodigal son got what he wanted, but lost what he had. When we rebel against God’s will, He sometimes says, “All right, YOUR will be done! See how you like it!” God’s most severe punishment may be to give us what we want. The lost son lusted for freedom without restraints and ended up enslaving himself. When his money ran out, his so-called friends deserted him; they were only friends of his wealth. He learned the hard way that we can’t enjoy the things money can buy if we ignore the things money cannot buy. Sin promises freedom, but it only brings slavery. It promises success, but it only brings failure. It promises life, but brings death. When he gets to the point where he has nothing left, no money, no friends, no food, no shelter or dignity, the prodigal son complains about no one but himself. He speaks of no unworthiness but his own. He doesn’t blame his plight on his former evil companions. He admits his eagerness to leave the protection of his home and offers no excuses to cover his guilt or justify his waywardness. It is in this “mature” realization that repentance and eventual change of life can occur. Guilt and shame are painful to face, yet we desperately need to see ourselves for what we are. Only then can we respond to God’s mercy. The returned son attempts to deliver his prepared speech to his father. He admits he has sinned against “heaven,” too shamed to even speak the name of God. He begins, but doesn’t get to finish, for his father calls to the servants to bring out the best robe to cover the son’s poverty and shame; a ring as a seal and symbol of his identity as a member of the household; and shoes so that he can now walk in a new way. Also, shoes were not worn by servants! The father does not humiliate his son, but welcomes him into all the privileges of the family and treats him with honor. Sometimes we think we need to clean ourselves up before we come to Jesus. All we need to do is come home and the Father will give us His best even though we have sinned. If you’re afraid to come to Jesus; if you’re ashamed of your past; if all you have to offer is your heart to Jesus, then do it! St. Paul reminds us today: “We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” This is a reminder and an invitation from God Himself. So I implore you in the name of Jesus…go to confession, and then remember the loving father of the prodigal son. He represents, in fact, the Father of us all, and is ready to run to us with open arms. What a beautiful image...what a beautiful God! As many of you have probably heard, Pope Francis has asked for a worldwide Synod to take place on the diocesan level and in local parishes in the next few months. I will be looking for a date for us to gather after Easter. Please see the bulletin and our website for further details. A reminder that Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday night at 7:00 PM in the Church. Use these last few weeks of Lent wisely to deepen your relationship with Jesus. In Jesus, our Crucified Lord, Fr. Bob

If you would like the Rosarians to pray for a special intention, please e-mail us at rosarysociety@stmary.ws.

PRAYING THE ROSARY DURING LENT Pray a decade for the intentions of your works of mercy during Lent. Then spend a few moments thinking of those in need that you personally could help by your presence, like the sick or shut-ins. Your visit does not have to be long, but it can be really life-giving to those who are bedridden or alone. Or just resolve to listen to others when you are inclined to be impatient, and never omit some alms, real money for the support of the needy. - Father Hugh Barbour, O. Praem., catholic.com

A Lenten Reflection by Father Collins WHY FOR-GIVE? Getting back on track, let us bring finality to the matter by summing up the arguments making forgiveness necessary for our Christian lives. In the previous reflection I sought to drive home the point, through an analysis of several Scriptural texts, that the acceptance of our prayers to God the Father is inextricably linked with forgiving our brother or sister. Hence, the conclusion was: before you GIVE-FOR GOD (the offering of your prayers), FOR-GIVE your neighbor. Let me take that conclusion to a further height and say that our ultimate salvation is also connected with whether we forgive our neighbor. Yes, it is that serious. The Scriptures state in unequivocal terms the need for us to forgive in order to be made worthy of God’s forgiveness. Just have a look at these texts: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall have mercy.” (Matthew 5: 7) “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” (Matthew 6: 14-15) “For there will be judgment without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy.” (James 2:13) When it comes to the practice of the Christian virtues, Christians are commanded to show perfection in forgiveness. This is clearly illustrated in the parable of the unmerciful servant. Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times” (Matthew 18: 21-22). As William Barclay, a Scottish theologian, explains it, Peter thought that he was being generous enough by suggesting that he should forgive seven times. He expected to be warmly commended; but Jesus’ answer was that the Christian must forgive seventy times seven. In other words, there is no reckonable limit to forgiveness. He further adds that nothing others do to us can in any way compare with what we have done to God; and if God has forgiven us the debt we owe to him, we must forgive our neighbors the debts they owe to us. Nothing that we have to forgive can even faintly or remotely compare with what we have been forgiven. We have been forgiven a debt which is beyond all paying (for human sin brought about the death of God’s own Son) and if that is so, we must forgive others as God has forgiven us, or we can hope to find no mercy. (William Barclay, The New Daily Study Bible: The Gospel of Matthew, Vol. 2, p. 227) Another reason to forgive is that offenders are often our close relatives. It turns out that those who are close to us are the ones who offend us. In my native language, there is a proverb that could be literally translated as: “The insect that bites you can only come from your clothing.” This means that it is the one who shares the same roof or shares the same bed with you, that close friend, the member of the society or the parishioner who, because of the close connection with you, can step on your toes. It is easy to look at this in a negative way and decide to live a solitary life. But how possible is that; and for how long can one live like that? By the fact of our wounded nature and brokenness, we are bound to offend each other. Therefore, the only way to keep these necessary relationships going is to learn to forgive offenses. Don’t forget that offending is a two-way affair; each can be the offender at any point in time on any given day. Besides, these close relations are the ones you usually GIVE your time, talent and treasure FOR. So, the argument is, since you are able to GIVE what is most precious and even private to you FOR him or her, try to also FOR-GIVE his or her offenses. Furthermore, you don’t deserve a double punishment, but peace of mind. Keeping wrongs in your heart doubles the effect of the wrongdoing. It is not worth enduring the pain or loss caused by the wrongdoing itself plus the harboring of it in our minds. This can lead to serious mental health issues or other health-related conditions. Sometimes, the offenders might not even be aware of their wrongdoing or might simply not care. This would mean that whatever the consequences from the wrongdoing, only you suffer it if you choose to let it take up space in your mind and heart. Yes, you might never forget it; but try to forgive. So as can be deduced from the arguments above, forgiveness is linked to the acceptance of our prayers before God, our peaceful and lasting relationships with loved ones, our inner peace, our mental and physical well-being and, ultimately, with our salvation. Aren’t all these enough reasons to forgive?

The Schools of Saint Mary Students Take the “Red Ball Challenge” Our Sixth graders recently learned about frame-by-frame animation creating movies and cartoons. Then, they took what they learned to their small group to complete the “Red Ball Challenge” under the guidance of the technology teacher, Mrs. Tripi. By taking their prior experience working with Google Slides, their task was to animate a red ball going from one side of a screen to the other. As you can see, working in groups made the study more interesting as more screens were used by students in the project, adding to their perseverance to succeed. As a team, they reflected on the experiences of working within their group, recognizing that they could apply animation to any discipline, all while increasing their problem-solving skills. Excellent job, 6th grade!

Bible Entrustment Ceremony for Freshmen The Ninth Graders from St. Mary’s High School were recently entrusted with their own personal Bibles during a special ceremony in the Church of Saint Mary with Fr. Bob, our pastor, and Fr. Dominik, who serves as the chaplain of the Schools. The High School generously gifted each of the Freshmen with a Bible to use for personal prayer as well as for class assignments. During the Entrustment Ceremony, the Bibles were blessed and then distributed to each student one at a time in a solemn commissioning to “Receive the Word of God.” Fr. Bob and Fr. Dominik also shared words of encouragement and insight on the importance of the Holy Bible and the power it has in one’s personal life. After the final prayer, the students were sent forth to live out the Good News, which they had just received. We look forward to seeing the tremendous fruits of the Word of God in the lives of our students. May Our Blessed Mother and patroness, St. Mary, help our students be faithful disciples and readers of God’s Holy Word. -Mr. Paul Pileggi, 9th and 12th Grade Theology Teacher

Respect Life Ministry St. Mary’s Respect Life Ministry invites you to participate -- through prayer, fasting, and witness -- in the local campaign of 40 Days For Life. This is an effort aimed at “changing hearts and minds.” The Spring 2022 campaign began on Ash Wednesday, March 2nd, and runs through April 10th, Palm Sunday. This is truly a lifesaving measure, as there are “turnarounds” (women who change their minds at the facility) in each campaign. The organization’s website describes it as “an internationally coordinated 40-day campaign that aims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and a peaceful all-day vigil in front of abortion businesses.” (40DaysForLife.com) In our area, the local campaign of peaceful, prayerful witness will take place 6 days each week – from Monday through Saturday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at: Public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood 540 Fulton Avenue Hempstead, New York More details are available at 40DaysForLife.com; find Hempstead NY through the “Location” search. The local campaign is coordinated by Pro-Bikers For Life. More information on witnessing can be found through the Diocesan Respect Life page, https://drvclife.org/witness/. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament The Stations of the Cross 1st Station: Jesus is condemned to death. Scripture Reflection: Mark 15:1-5, 15 Jesus was innocent, but he chose to accept His death to save us. Have you ever been falsely accused? How did you respond? 2nd Station: Jesus carries His cross. Scripture Reflection: John 19:6, 15-17 Jesus’ cross was literal, but we all have crosses we bear in this life. It’s easy to get caught up in our own world and focus on our own cross. Do you grant others grace the way you want others to do for you?

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church

3rd Station: Jesus falls the first time. With a crown of thorns shoved on His head and beaten by the soldiers, Jesus was exhausted by the weight of His cross. Not only was He physically exhausted - He was emotionally exhausted. His followers had betrayed him. Reflect on a time when you have felt burdened with the weight of the world. Even in hard moments, Jesus gives us an opportunity to pick up and keep going. 4th Station: Jesus meets His Mother. Scripture Reflection: John 19: 25-27 Mary, the Mother of Jesus, watched her son endure ultimate pain and suffering for us. A mother has a unique outlook on her child’s life. Reflect on how distraught Mary must have felt as she watched her son endure complete agony. 5th Station: Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry his cross. Scripture Reflection: Mark 15:21 Do you think Simon wanted to help Jesus carry His cross, or was he picked out of the crowd and afraid of the Roman soldiers? When have you helped someone carry their cross? Were you willing to help or were you resentful? 6th Station: Veronica wipes the face of Jesus. St. Veronica boldly stepped out of the crowd to wipe Jesus’ face of blood and sweat. It wasn’t safe to be a known follower of Jesus, yet she took the time to help Him when He needed it. When have you stepped outside of your comfort zone to offer support or kindness, even if it was unpopular? 7th Station: Jesus falls the second time. We all make mistakes, we all fall down. How can you try to find the strength to rise again? 8th Station: Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem. Scripture Reflection: Luke 23:27-31 Even in the midst of his agony, Jesus recognized the pain of others. Are you so caught up in yourself, in your own pain, that you fail to comfort others? How can you support your friends and family in their own time of need? 9th Station: Jesus falls a third time Jesus. Sheer exhaustion made Jesus fall not once, not twice, but three times. Is there an area in your life that you keep messing up or falling short? Where can you turn to find the strength to stand up yet again? Church of Saint Mary | 16

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament 10th Station: Jesus’ clothes are taken away. Scripture Reflection: John 19:23-24 After the pain, and the blood, and the sweat, Jesus now faces humiliation. His clothes, His dignity, have been stripped away even further. When have you been utterly humiliated? When have you caused someone else humiliation? 11th Station: Jesus is nailed to the cross. Scripture Reflection: Luke 23:33-34 Touch your hands. Imagine stakes being driven into them. Imagine that you could make it all go away in an instant - and you don’t. Jesus chose this pain and sacrifice for us. Where in your life can you sacrifice for someone else? 12th Station: Jesus dies on the cross. Scripture Reflection: Luke 23:44-46 After three hours of complete agony, Jesus dies. And in doing so, He saves us from our sins and allows us a chance at eternal life. Can you spend time this week reflecting on the ultimate sacrifice? 13th Station: The body of Jesus is taken down from the cross. The world was still. Jesus’ mother, Mary, and other disciples had broken hearts. And yet they lovingly and tenderly removed His body from the cross. Where can you offer comfort and support today? 14th Station: Jesus is laid in the tomb. Scripture Reflection: Matthew 27:57-60 For the moment, all hope appears to be lost. But God’s greatest moment, the Resurrection, is about to begin. Reflect on your life. When has something incredible happened after a time of difficulty? How did that change you?

Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? The Retrouvaille Program is for married couples facing difficult challenges in their relationships. It is primarily a practical program to improve communication, build stronger marriages and help couples reconnect. Presenters are not trained marriages counselors, but rather couples sharing their personal stories of marital struggles and the tools they used to rediscover their love. For confidential information about the Retrouvaille program, or to register for the upcoming weekend that begins on Friday, May 13, 2022, please visit our website www.helpourmarriage.org or call 1-800-470-2230 and you will be connected directly and confidentially to a couple from Long Island/Metro Retrouvaille who can help.
