From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“Christ is Risen…He is Truly Risen!”

For our Eastern Rite Catholics and for the Orthodox, this is the greeting they offer to each other during the Easter Season. What a wonderful way to greet other believers...to proclaim the Resurrection of Jesus. These are my favorite days of the Church. Easter is such a reminder of the New Life Jesus promises. One of the things I love is that the world around us usually proclaims that New Life. If we look around in our gardens, we can see the crocuses and daffodils springing forth from the earth. The world that looked so dead is now bursting with the signs of spring life. Even in our Church, the images, which were shrouded in purple, have now been revealed in the power of the Resurrection.

I hope that these days of celebration don’t pass us by without reflecting on the meaning of Easter. If we truly believe that the Jesus who died on the Cross was raised on Easter, then we have to ask ourselves, “What does it mean for our lives?”

Easter is not a celebration of spring or even of chocolate (as much as I love chocolate); it is the promise of Jesus that even if we die to this life, we have the promise of Life to come. But Eternal Life is a free gift that must be freely accepted on our part. In being accepted, it requires from us a response to God. That response is a turning from sin in our own lives and embracing God’s vision for our lives. It is participating at Mass each week to be nourished by the Real and True Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. It is also living in truth the Gospel, sowing the seeds of the love of Jesus, and living each day knowing how much we ARE loved. It is turning to God in Jesus even when and especially when the world seems to prefer the darkness of sin and death. So that through the faith and power of the Resurrection, we can bring the healing and loving Light of Jesus to our sometimes hurting world. A world that longs for that promised peace. Never succumb to the powers of darkness; you have been enlightened by Jesus…TRUST. Let us reflect and ponder who Jesus is for us and how His presence is lived each day. Be bearers of His message of peace and hope to all you meet. Come to the Table of the Lord!

What a joy it is for me to celebrate Holy Week and Easter with you as your Pastor. I feel so blessed by God for all He has done for me. I am grateful to my staff for all they do to sow the seeds of the Gospel at St. Mary’s. I am also grateful and thankful for all those who give so much of themselves and yet, at times, seem to go unnoticed. I am so touched by the gifts that we share as stewards, and I know it makes this parish the wonderful community that it is.

May we never take our gifts and blessings for granted and may the joy of Easter remain with us long after the flowers have died and the Alleluias fade into the background. We are blessed and redeemed by a God who loves us. What joy that understanding should be for us!

On behalf of myself, Fr. Dominik, Fr. Eddy, the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, and the entire staff here at St. Mary’s, we wish you and your families a very blessed and prayerful Easter.

CHRIST IS RISEN…HE IS TRULY RISEN!

In the Resurrected Jesus and Mary, His Mother, Fr. Bob

April 7, 2024

Jesus’ Message of Mercy is summarized as ABC:

A- Ask for God’s Mercy

B- Be merciful to others

C- Completely trust in God’s mercy.

The Five Elements of the Message are summarized as FINCH:

F- Feast of Divine Mercy

I- Image of Divine Mercy

N- Novena of Divine Mercy

C- Chaplet of Divine Mercy

H- Hour of Mercy

We wish to feature the Chaplet of Divine Mercy this year. Jesus revealed it to Sr. Faustina as a powerful prayer He wants everyone pray. Sr. Faustina was interceding in her own words about a dire situation – to no avail. Then the Lord gave her the words of the chaplet, and as she began to pray those words the hand of the ‘angel of punishment’ was stayed! The Lord directed her to pray in those words, and to teach others to do the same.

“Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you…Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death…When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the Just Judge but as the Merciful Savior…Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy…Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will” (Diary, 687, 1541, 1731).

The Chaplet can be prayed anytime, anywhere. The Lord also asked that it be recited as a novena over the 9 days before the Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday). We can pray it for our own personal intentions, for others, for the Lord’s intentions. “By this novena [of chaplets] I will grant every possible grace to souls” (Diary, 796).

HAPPY DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY! May the Divine Mercy ever bless you and yours! And may you ever come to Him with the vessel of Trust – and draw!

The Chaplet of Mercy

Recite this chaplet on the beads of the Rosary in the following manner:

First of all, say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the I Believe in God.

On the Our Father Beads, say the following words:

Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

On the Hail Mary Beads, say the following words:

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

In conclusion, recite these words three times:

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Cheerful Catholic Academic

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

The Schools of Saint Mary Welcome Provost of Austrian Abbey

Rev. Fr. Robert A. Romeo and the Very Rev. Dom Daniel Stephen Nash, Can. Reg. recently had the honor of welcoming a distinguished guest to the campus. His Grace Abbot Anton Höslinger, the provost of the Klosterneuburg Abbey and the Order of the Augustinian Canons in Austria, made his inaugural Pastoral Visit to Saint Mary’s, which was also the first-ever visit to a school on Long Island.

The excitement leading up to Abbot Anton’s arrival was spirit-filled, as faculty and students alike anticipated meeting the newly appointed provost. He took office in 2023 as the 67th provost of the 12th-century Augustinian Monastery of the Catholic Church, founded by Saint Leopold III, patron Saint of Austria, and his second wife, Agnes of Germany. According to its website, with a rich 900-year history as a religious and cultural center, the Abbey remains stable under its selfgovernance with interests in social and cultural commitments, most notably the conservation of unique art treasures collected over centuries. The Abbey is home to the triptych art piece called the Verdun Altar, made by Nicholas of Verdun, dating back to 1181. Today, the Abbey includes 28 parishes in Lower Austria, Vienna, Norway, and America. The Canonry has 37 members. Their various projects include educating children and young people, housing for the needy, relief aide, three ophthalmic clinics, and efforts to stand up against modern-day slavery.

In December 2023, Provost Höslinger announced the appointment of our previous president, the Very Rev. Dom Elias Carr, Can. Reg., to succeed him as the Abbey’s chief financial officer. Fr. Elias started his new role on January 1, 2024, and Fr. Daniel was named the head of the Schools of Saint Mary.

Abbot Anton celebrated Mass for our Middle and High School students during his visit. He then went on a walking tour of the schools with Fr. Bob and Fr. Daniel, greeting teachers and students. Along the way, he visited the new Chapel in Marist Hall, the administrative and staff offices, and several classrooms.

As a token of their gratitude and welcome wishes for His Grace, the students presented Abbot Anton with beautiful Spiritual Bouquets, thanking him for his first Pastoral Visit to the Schools of St. Mary. The bouquets contained a variety of prayer intentions from across all grade levels, such as the Divine Mercy Chaplet, multiple decades of the Most Holy Rosary, Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Hail Mary. The students also gifted him school spirit wear. He accepted each of the gifts presented to him, and his warm smile showed just how touched he was by the children’s thoughtfulness.

Fr. Bob was pleased to report that Abbot Anton was “impressed with the Catholic identity of the Schools and the work of our students.” We all look forward to welcoming His Grace, Abbot Anton Höslinger, back to St. Mary’s on a future visit to the United States.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

THE NEXT SVDP MEETING IS

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3RD at 7:00 PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome!

We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.

Today as we celebrate the feast of Easter we find the challenge of also seeing and believing the resurrection that comes through our own lives of self-sacrifice which brings new life to others. As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering and you give them Easter hope and joy.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

AN EASTER PRAYER

It is very meet and right, with all the powers of heart and mind, and with the service of the lips, to praise the invisible God, the Father Almighty, and His only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who paid the debt of Adam for us to the Eternal Father, and effaced the bond of the ancient guilt by the Blood poured forth in loving kindness. For this is the Paschal festival in which you first did bring our fathers, the children of Israel, out of Egypt, and made them to pass over the Red Sea dry-shod. This, then, is the night which cleared away the darkness of sin by a pillar of radiance. This is the night throughout the world which now restores to grace and unites to holiness believers in Christ, separated from worldly vices and from the gloom of sin. This is the night in which Christ broke the bonds of death and ascended from the grave, the Conqueror. For to be born had been no blessing to us, unless we could have been redeemed. Oh, the wondrous condescension of your loving kindness towards us! Oh, the inestimable tenderness of your love! To redeem the servant, you gave up your Son. This holy night, then, puts to flight offenses, washes away sins, and restores innocence to the fallen, and joyousness to the sad. Oh, truly blessed night, which spoiled the Egyptians and enriched the Hebrews–the night in which Heaven and earth are reconciled! We pray therefore, Lord, that you would preserve your servants in the peaceful enjoyment of this Easter happiness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, now and forever. Amen.

- Pope Saint Gregory the Great (Pont. 590-604)
