From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:3)

Each of us, to some degree I am sure, desires to proclaim Jesus as Lord of our lives. The way each of us will live out that proclamation will depend on various factors. Our love of Jesus and hope for eternal life will certainly be factors in how we live that out. So will the knowledge of the Holy Spirit we have in our lives. Sometimes, it’s fear that keeps us from abandoning ourselves to the power of the Name of Jesus. All sorts of anxieties may arise in our minds that can paralyze us from acting in the Name of Jesus. Those fears and anxieties usually arise when we attempt to act under our own power. To rely only on our own abilities sets us up for failure. Pentecost reminds us of the words of Jesus, “I will send you the Holy Spirit who will teach you in all things.”

The power of the Holy Spirit is explained as a “wind” that came over the Disciples. That wind is called “Ruah” in Hebrew or breath of God. In that breath of God is great power. If we remember the account in Genesis of the creation of the world, God breathed upon the waters and made them wellsprings of life. It was the breath of God seen as a wind that parted the Red Sea so the people of Israel could move from slavery to freedom. If we continue to look into the Scriptures, we see that when the prophets spoke it was under the influence of the power of God. His spirit dwelling within them gave them the knowledge and strength to act as God had called them to even in the midst of personal struggle and hardship. The more they relied on the power and “breath” of God, the more they could act in His will. And so it is, or should be, for us. In our own power we will probably fail…BUT if we are willing to submit ourselves to the power that God has given to us through the Holy Spirit, then things we thought could not be possible can become a reality.

To submit to the Holy Spirit we first have to believe that we in fact DO HAVE the Holy Spirit within us. At our Baptism, the Spirit of God came upon us and that Holy Spirit was sealed again at our Confirmation. Secondly, we need to accept and believe that we are loved by God and, because we are loved, then the promise of Jesus is given to us. Thirdly, we have to realize that God chooses us even in what we may perceive as our weaknesses. If we can accept that Jesus has a plan for us, then the power of the Holy Spirit can and does give us the grace and ability to act in God.

But again, we have to be willing to believe and then act on that belief. This is where trust must play a part. Trust that God will accomplish much in us if we are willing to listen to His voice (and you know, of course, that comes from praying the Scriptures and listening in silence). If our hearts are open, the Holy Spirit will truly guide us on this journey. That openness and trust, of course, takes work and, most importantly, an ability to “let go” of the control we treasure so much in our lives. So maybe we need to take those first baby steps and not “run” through life, but walk gently. Taking steps that are slow and, at each step, to stop and listen to where God is calling us. That journey will be different for each of us depending on where we are in our spiritual life.

Never feel unworthy and NEVER compare your journey with God to that of someone else. God has made us all different and He comes to us in our uniqueness to gently call us to a deeper trust and love for Him. As we hear in the Gospel . . . “Do Not be Afraid” for the God who calls us will give us what we need to live the faith . . . just be open to the power of the Holy Spirit that we have received. We know from the Acts of the Apostles that the Holy Spirit changed the Disciples . . . BELIEVE…it can change you! Let us celebrate with joy the “Birthday of the Church”. . . and, as Pope Francis calls us, pray and work for a renewal of our present day Church and for each of us.

We have completed our parish celebrations of First Holy Communion and Confirmation for our young people. I pray they will continue that life-long journey with the Lord Jesus. I am so grateful to our catechists in Religious Education and teachers in our Schools. I am most grateful to our Director of Religious Education, Mrs. Marie Granieri, and her assistant, Ms. Catherine Abbatangelo, for their hard work and dedication. Please join with me in praying for our young people.

In the Power of the Holy Spirit, Fr. Bob

Wash Kits for the Homeless: Thank you to all who donated so generously to this cause. Kelly Melore of St Aidan’s Rosary Society was overwhelmed by our outpouring of support and sent a heartfelt thank you to us. We helped provide some dignity to those who rarely get to experience it.

Monday, May 20th - Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church

In 2018, Pope Francis added the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother if the Church, to the calendar to be celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost. The Gospel for the feast is John 19:25-31, which recounts how from the cross, Jesus entrusted Mary to his disciples as their mother and entrusted his disciples to Mary as her children. Pope Francis approved the decree after considering how this devotion might encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the church.

Prayer to Mary, Mother of the Church and Mother of our Faith

Open our ears to hear God’s word and to recognize his voice and call. Awaken in us a desire to follow in his footsteps, to go forth from our own land and to receive his promise.

Help us to be touched by his love, that we may touch him in faith.

Help us to entrust ourselves fully to him and to believe in his love, especially at times of trial, beneath the shadow of the cross, when our faith is called to mature.

Sow in our faith the joy of the Risen One.

Remind us that those who believe are never alone.

Teach us to see all things with the eyes of Jesus, that he may be light for our path. And may this light of faith always increase in us, until the dawn of that undying day which is Christ himself, your Son, our Lord! - Pope Francis

Friday, May 24th - Feast of Our Lady Mary Help of Christians

Our Lady Help of Christians is one of many titles given to Mary. It specifically refers to Mary as the intercessor on our behalf for us to God. Since the early 1500’s when the Ottoman Empire planned to invade Europe, Pope Pius V asked Catholics to pray for Mary’s intercession in defeating the Turks. After the successful battle, Pope Pius V proclaimed Mary to be “Our Lady Help of Christians.” Our Lady Help of Christians is the patroness of the Salesians, the community founded by St. John Bosco.

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

National Junior Honor Society Celebrates Second Year Induction of Candidates

On Thursday, April 25, 2024, Saint Mary’s Elementary School welcomed 26 candidates in the Church of St. Mary to be inducted into the prestigious National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), which operates chapters in all 50 states and schools around the world.

According to the principles that define its role, the NJHS “elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship and helps middle-level students develop the knowledge and skills to become well-rounded student leaders in their school, community, and beyond.” Last year, St. Mary’s celebrated the historic chapter launch to further enhance its middle school students’ academic and personal growth and foster enthusiasm and leadership amongst their peers and as responsible citizens beyond the classroom. In addition to their families, St. Mary’s, as a school community, has played a significant role in their journey. Rev. Fr. Robert Romeo presided over the ceremony.

“As the pastor of the Church and Schools of St. Mary, it’s an honor to see such young, determined minds shining brightly in our school. I encourage you to continue to inspire others with your passion and determination, and most of all, to live the Gospel and serve others in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.”

After the students were officially inducted into the St. Mary’s Elementary School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society, they recited their pledge to uphold the high purposes of the NJHS. The congregation was called upon to recognize the charisms of the Society and exhorted the candidates to be responsible stewards of these gifts.

For more information on the unique dedicated facility for St. Mary’s Middle School and the academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs, please contact Principal Mrs. Theresa Kemp at 516-627-0184 or visit saintmaryses.org.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Today as we anticipate the feast of the Ascension we are reminded that Christ’s saving work on earth continues through his disciples…and now through us. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts, into our lives and into the hearts of those who are poor.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

Good Samaritan House and Saint Vincent de Paul Conference Recognized by EOC

On Thursday, May 2nd, the Manhasset-Great Neck Economic Opportunity Council, Inc. (EOC) recognized the work of St. Mary’s Good Samaritan House and our Saint Vincent de Paul Conference to help those in need in our community. The mission of the EOC is to help “at risk” youth and families. Both Good Samaritan House and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul work with many of the same families that the EOC supports. They recognized us last night, but we also very much so value the work they do for those in need in this community. It was a really nice night!

When we were walking in darkness you were there, you were there, when we were kneeling in weakness you were there, you were there, when we drew near feeling worthless you were there, you were there, when we were needing forgiveness you were there, you were there, when we were searching for your grace you were there, you were there. We give thanks to you, Lord, for you have done marvelous things!

God of Promise and God of Hope, who through your great mercy have granted us new birth through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we praise your wonderful name! God of Glory and God of Might who through your great power have granted us new strength to endure all things through faith in Christ our risen King, we praise your wonderful name!

Holy Spirit Prayer of Saint Augustine

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, That my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, That my work, too, may be holy. Draw, my heart, O Holy Spirit, That I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, To defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, That I always may be holy. Amen.

We are often not the Easter People that we should be, living in the certain knowledge of your great mercy and love. Distracted by the world around us we fail to hear your voice, or hide when faith is challenged as we wander off the path.

Forgive us, we pray; restore the love that we first had, a faith that can endure. We will keep our eyes fixed on you, Lord, and with you at our right hand we shall not be shaken.

It was always your will that Israel should find, in Jesus Christ, the one who would bring them home, lost sheep returning to the Shepherd who is their King. And to that fold would come others, from every nation upon earth, as prophets had foretold, including those gathered here today to honor your name.

Gracious God, we praise you for the promise of Scripture, the depth of your love and our Savior, Jesus Christ.

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY, MANHASSET HISTORY ARCHIVES PROJECT

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

We are still attempting to collect photos, documents, and all kinds of information relating to the history of St. Mary’s, encompassing all aspects of parish activities and ministries, including the Schools of St. Mary’s.

As we look forward to the Centennial celebration of the Elementary School (2026), and the 175th Anniversary of the Parish (2028), our goal is to accumulate not only recent history, but find some missing pieces to fill in the past 170+years.

If you have any of the following from any event, ministry, or of any of the Schools of St. Mary’s, sharing these would be greatly appreciated:

Photos: Celebrations, graduations, sacraments, galas, etc.

Journals, Programs

Announcements (Bulletins not needed)

Newspaper articles

Family remembrances

Information regarding:

The Elementary and High School (s)

Past pastors, priests, nuns, principals, teachers

Clergy & Religious who were parish residents Knights of Columbus, Rosary Society, and other ministries

Any and all of these would be very helpful.

PLEASE NOTE: Any article of information which you wish to be returned can be “digitized” (scanned) and saved, then returned to you. Please include this request with your item with the contact information for its return to you. A box is located in the Parish Office to receive these valuable pieces of our parish’s history.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
