From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“Simon, son of John, do you love me? Feed my sheep.” (John 21:16) These are some of the most beautiful words in Sacred Scripture. Throughout the New Testament, St. Peter represents the Church. He was the first of the Apostles and chosen to lead the Church. Here we have this prince of the Apostles, St. Peter, who, a short time earlier, had denied knowing Jesus three times. The Lord, in His mercy, now gives St. Peter the opportunity to undo those words and to “wipe the slate clean.” St. Peter is a bit shocked that Jesus would ask him three times if he loved Him and seems to be exasperated. Whenever I read this account, I always smile to myself. Poor Peter, he never seems to fully grasp it all and I wonder why Jesus would choose him as the first Pope and the head of the Church. Our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles gives us insight as to what Jesus could see in St. Peter that maybe we could miss. St. Peter is threatened by the leaders and told not to preach that Jesus has risen from the dead. He tells them that he is bound to follow God’s will and his response is proof that not only does he finally, “get it,” but that he is not afraid of what they could do to his body. When he realized that he had sinned and had encountered the loving Jesus, PETER WILL NOT deny Jesus again. His transformation is hope for all of us and for the Church. We sin and our actions sometimes deny our faith in the power of the Risen Jesus . . . but the same Jesus who asks St. Peter if he loves Him is the Jesus who continually asks us the same question. We, at times, can wander from Jesus, but His loving gentle voice is never far away, beckoning us back to Himself. We see that invitation to love Jesus offered to each of us as individuals and to us as a Church to “Tend His Sheep.” The Church has gone through a tumultuous time in the last few years. COVID-19 and its impact have altered many of our usual practices. Also, as we know, a very small number of priests have done some horrendous and despicable acts to innocent children. Some in our hierarchy have not responded properly to protect God’s children. This sin hangs over us and our hearts need to go out in love and compassion to those who had their innocence robbed from them. A day doesn’t go by when those innocent victims are not a part of my prayer and the thought of what they went through sickens me beyond words. St. Peter is such a wonderful example of how encountering the Risen Lord gives one a new life. Sinner as he was, missing the boat on so many issues about Jesus, he was still chosen to lead the Church. As St. Paul says, “He chooses the weak and makes them strong.” Jesus is continually renewing us and the Church. Let us look for the signs of the healing and renewing presence of Jesus. Let us not lose hope even when we (or the Church institution) sin. Sin should be a time to re-evaluate our lives. In re-evaluating, we look to the Lord to work in our lives to change us and bring us closer to His vision for us. Jesus can do wonders for each of us and yes, even for our Church! So hear the words of Jesus, “Do you love me?” Let us always act in that love and care for His people. Last Week we celebrated Divine Mercy Sunday. I would like to thank Fr. Collins and all those who assisted in making the day one of prayer and devotion. I want to thank the parish for their great generosity in the Easter collection and for the many gifts given to the priests. Thank you all! As you know, Pope Francis has called for a synod throughout the Church. This gathering for prayer and discussion will take place also on the parish level. I am working on a date for us to meet. Please watch the bulletin and website for further information. In Jesus, our Risen Lord, Fr. Bob The Third Sunday of Easter | May 1, 2022

REMINDER: OUR FINAL MEETING OF THIS SEASON Our meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 6th, at 10:00 AM in the St. John Paul II Room. All are invited to attend.
Why is May the Month of Mary? The tradition of dedicating the month of May to Mary came about in the 13th century. Some say it was created to replace various pagan cults. The actual reason is the fact that this month is the time when spring is at the height of its beauty in the northern hemisphere. Spring is also connected with nature renewing itself. In her way, Mary gave new life to the world when she gave birth to our savior, Jesus Christ. The link between Mary and the month of May became popular among the members of the Jesuit Order. By 1700, it had a firm hold among their students at the Roman College, and a short time later it was publicly celebrated in the Gesu Church in Rome. From there it spread to the rest of the Church. Devotion to Mary is one of the most important parts of the Catholic identity. As our mother, she is an example of a committed “Yes” to the will of God. Because of the devotion to her, many people ask her for help in the most difficult moments of their life as any child does with his mother.
A Note from Fr. Jude to the Rosary Society To our dear Rosary Society of St Mary’s, Peace and Blessings of the Lord! Happy Easter! Hope you and your families are all well and safe. I understand it is your Annual Mass & Communion Brunch. Sending my warm salutations and prayerful good wishes! I remember well your key and noble roles in families, in the Church, in society. I duff my hat for you! On this happy occasion, I wish to recall all your goodness and kindness to me, your supportive prayers and good wishes, your invitations and your gifts. All these affirmed and supported me more than you know. And you crowned it all with your overwhelming show of solidarity at my departure from Manhasset! May I use this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to you. I pray the Divine Mercy to bless and replenish you all, bless your families and community, bless St Mary’s! I am well and safe - by divine providence and care. A lot of anger, agitation, civil disobedience and reactionary action, violence, around the country. But you know the happy paradox? People are doggedly getting about their normal business and survival pursuits in the midst of everything! I am currently at our Pastoral Centre, re-acclimatizing to the Diocese. Best wishes, God’s blessings, Fr. Jude
Rosary Society The Annual Induction Mass and Communion Brunch, held on April 23rd, was a great success. During the Mass celebrated by Father Bob, six women of the parish became the newest members of St. Mary’s Rosary Society. They are: Joan Viscardi, Fay Vricella, Laraine LoBelia, Angela Wyszomierski, Betty Gillen Toher, and Christine Sakarya. The festivities continued at the North Hemsptead Country Club, where the Rosarians enjoyed a delicious meal, wore their finest hats and bonnets, and heard an informative presentation by the President of the Schools of St. Mary’s, Father Elias Carr, Can. Reg. Father Bob was gifted with a donation for the scholarship funds of the Schools, made possible by the generosity of the Rosarians during the past year. We joyfully welcomed our newest members, and renewed our fellowship among all those who attended a lovely afternoon.
Church of Saint Mary | 8
Fr. Dominik’s Easter Letter Dante Alighieri began his Divine Comedy with these prophetic words, “When I had journeyed half of our life’s way, I found myself within a shadowed forest, for I had lost the path that does not stray.” The last three years have felt like a dark forest. Dante’s poetic words reveal the timeless condition of the human heart. We began Lent with Jesus’ journey into the desert for forty days. The desert is a lifeless landscape which symbolizes every human poverty: material, relational, and spiritual. Since the Fall, we have felt the sharp sting of our poverty and desired our return to the garden. In contrast to the desert, the image of the garden is where rivers are flowing, and life is blossoming. We find man in the garden in communion with God and creation. In the desert, man hears only the wind blowing the sand off the dunes of a lifeless abyss. Powerful men have tried to build paradise in the desert. Like the men in the Tower of Babel, we use our own power to reclaim a divine status which we lost from original sin. Pope Francis wrote in his 2019 Lenten Letter, “Sin leads man to consider himself the god of creation, to see himself as its absolute master and to use it, not for the purpose willed by the Creator but for his own interests, to the detriment of other creatures.” In the pursuit to build an earthly paradise, various ideologies have risen to fill the spiritual void. Each ideology brings their own language and, like the Tower of Babel, have scattered the human race furthering our isolation from God and one another. We continue to seek divine life through economics, technology, culture, and politics, but the more the heart tries to seek an answer through these endeavors, the more man realizes that such foundations are built on sand which fail the test of time. After the collapse, man is left to wrestle with the restless heart. The question remains: is there a way out of the desert? Every Easter is God’s relentless invitation to ponder the divine mystery of life. The Gospel presents the true exodus which is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Many have reduced the Resurrection to a symbolic myth. But the mystics would fight against such modern rhetoric. At the same time, the transformative power of the Resurrection only bears fruit if we allow our life to mirror the pilgrimage of Jesus. It means we have to walk through the desert, the temptations, to pick up the Cross, to offer our suffering, to seek the lost sheep, to proclaim the kingdom, to heal the deaf, the mute, and the sick. By spiritually living the pilgrimage of Jesus in our ordinary life, we transform our desert into the garden God intended from the beginning. This is done not by our own power, but in and through the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. It was the Holy Spirit who hovered over the waters in our original creation. The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert and eventually to Calvary. We are led by the same Spirit into our own desert so that we too can be spiritually crucified and recreated in the image of the Resurrection. Pope Francis wrote, “By concretely welcoming Christ’s victory over sin and death into our lives, we will also radiate its transforming power to all of creation.” The saints are living revelations of the Resurrection and they foreshadow the joy and freedom which awaits us. We walk not with despair as other men continue to build their towers of Babel on sand. We walk knowing that the Kingdom of Heaven has won the victory. Jesus has conquered the deserts of past generations, and will conquer the desert of today. May we deepen our intimacy with Jesus this Easter so that the Church continues to be the oasis in our modern world. We walk in our pilgrimage with faith and hope that humanity will return to the garden and live in communion with the Saints in the presence of God’s love for eternity.

Religious Education With joy, the Sacrament of Confirmation was celebrated on April 25th at the Church of St. Mary by the Most Reverend Robert J. Lombardo (CFR), Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago. The beautiful liturgy continued the sacramental process begun at baptism and sustained by the Eucharist. Approximately 150 “Confirmand” received the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit, and are now called to actively use them as witnesses to the life of Christ and the Church. We extend tremendous gratitude to the Confirming Bishop Lombardo, Fr. Bob, parish priests, catechists and parish families for a most beautiful sacrament experience. May the Holy Spirit bless our parish Confirmand and their journey in the Catholic faith.

Retrouvaille Weekend You Can Help Heal Your Marriage Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue or have you just stopped talking to each other? Does talking about it only make it worse? The Retrouvaille Program is for married couples facing difficult challenges in their relationships. It is primarily a practical program to improve communication, build stronger marriages and help couples reconnect. Presenters are not trained marriages counselors, but rather couples sharing their personal stories of marital struggles and the tools they used to rediscover their love. For confidential information about the Retrouvaille program, or to register for the upcoming weekend that begins on Friday, May 13, 2022, please visit our website www.helpourmarriage.org or call 1-800-470-2230 and you will be connected directly and confidentially to a couple from Long Island/Metro Retrouvaille who can help. Location: Immaculate Conception, Huntington, NY 440 West Neck Road Huntington, NY 11743
Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo Diocesan Priest, Oblate of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart Montforte Irpino: 11 January 1899 - Rome: 2 May 1934
O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
