From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,

“Whoever loves me will keep my Word.” (John 14:23) St. John speaks so eloquently of the love that Jesus has for us. It should be a comfort to know that no matter where we are on our faith journey or how far we have traveled from the path of Jesus, that His love for us is offered as gift to us. We have been hearing over these last few weeks about the place love must play in the life of a believer. Love is the hallmark and sign of those who have chosen to accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. If we ponder on how much we are loved and cared for, it should be a moment of deep contemplation of what path we are traveling. If we have embraced and “believe” that we are loved, it would follow that we want to know more about who this Jesus is. In discovering this message, it makes sense that we would want to respond back to the free gift of love by freely walking the path that Jesus offers. When our hearts are open to Jesus, we see that His message is a path to personal freedom and peace. So it follows that if we can comprehend how much we are loved, then we would want to keep His commands. For our own wills, this giving of self to Jesus can be a difficult process. So often our own wills and desires “get in the way.” How often do we know what Jesus asks of us yet find it difficult to bend our wills in submission to His plan and purpose for us? Maybe it’s fear that keeps those walls up. Fear of what Jesus will ask of us or fear that hearing His voice may mean that certain parts of our lives or response systems will have to change. But Jesus will never ask anything of us that He, with us, cannot accomplish. So how do we put that fear aside? How do we open ourselves to living the will of God? Well, the answer lies in the Gospel itself. “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything.” The power of the Holy Spirit has been given to each of us at Baptism and Confirmation so that we may be open to hear and believe the message of Jesus. This message promises us peace when we give ourselves to God and live His commandments. Through our own will, this is not possible, BUT if we are willing to open ourselves to the power of the Holy Spirit, great things can happen. So hear the words of Jesus...Do not be afraid. Live in His love and be that love to one another. And, as I always encourage...READ THE SCRIPTURES so you may know the One you serve. This past week, our Elementary School celebrated Mary’s Spirit Week. The week was filled with events to honor Our Lady as Mother of the Church and our holy Patroness. Recitation of a living rosary, games, food, and times of prayer were some of the highlights of this special week. I want to thank all in our Elementary School who worked so hard to make this a wonderful week of focus on Our Lady. The issue of Roe vs. Wade is in the headlines as a leak from SCOTUS has surfaced. The proposed draft seems to suggest that the decision about abortion should be left to the states to decide. I have been watching the reaction of many and am dismayed at some of the responses. While I completely understand that this is an emotionally charged issue, it is never an excuse for either side to engage in violence or break the law. I am disheartened by the reports of Catholic Churches being desecrated and Holy Mass being scenes of protest. Our responsibility as Catholics is to pray for an end to abortion and also to enter into peaceful, loving dialogue so our point of view can be heard. Yelling, screaming, using threats, or name-calling is never the answer. All that does is polarize people and the message becomes lost. We have the words of Jesus: “Love one another.” We must also remember that other powerful tool at our disposal, voting! In this month of May dedicated to Our Blessed Mother, I encourage you to pray fervently the Holy Rosary for peace in our lives and in our world. Let Our Lady lead you closer to Jesus, her Son. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob The Sixth Sunday of Easter | May 22, 2022

My Dear Parishioners and Friends, As many of you have heard, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has called for a universal Synod of the Church. The Holy Father hopes that the Church gathers to discuss questions of spirituality and our life of faith. The outcome he prays to achieve from this gathering of followers and the power of the Holy Spirit is to come to a deeper appreciation of our Catholic faith and be stronger evangelizers for the Church. As the pastor, I extend an invitation to all parishioners for an Evening of Prayer and Reflection on Thursday, June 9 at 7:00 PM in the Marian Room. Please encourage your family members, friends, and fellow parishioners to participate in this discussion, reflect, and pray upon our work here in Manhasset and around the world. Fr. Bob

Rosary Society Our Mission Statement: The Rosary Society fosters devotion to Mary through prayer and good works for causes that would be dear to her heart Invest 20 minutes of your day to pray the Rosary, and see the difference it will make in your life. If you would like the Rosarians to pray for a special intention, please e-mail us at rosarysociety@stmary.ws.

Tips for Praying the Mysteries of the Rosary TIP #1. Pick a set of mysteries. The Mysteries of the Holy Rosary are: Joyous, Glorious, Luminous, and Sorrowful. The mysteries of the Rosary invite us to reflect on many profound moments in the lives of Jesus and Mary. If we approach the mysteries with open minds and hearts, we can discover beautiful insights and applications in our own lives. Pray the mysteries of the Rosary, seek to understand how God is working in your life, and you will find peace, direction, and the incredible love God has for you. (dynamiccatholic.org)

RCIA and Adult Faith Formation The RCIA Group Discuss What It Means to Be a Catholic Parent The RCIA candidates and their team move ahead this week to discuss “Family Life” as a Catholic parent. The Catholic Church speaks strongly on the importance of Family Life in a child’s development. It is through the family that the children learn they are loved and accepted. It is through the parents’ relationship with each other and with the children that they learn values, proper behavior, how to treat one another, etc. The parents are truly their first teachers and are teaching all the time by the way they act and react to the situations of daily life So important is the Family influence that Vatican II named the family as the “Domestic Church” for it sees the family as such, especially the parents who by word and example become the first teachers of their faith to their children. They also looked at some of the virtues we practice as we strive to come closer to God and one another in our lives. Our two candidates will receive their Sacraments, postponed from the Easter Vigil, on Pentecost Sunday. Their formal time of instruction will end at this time. Sister Teresa can be contacted about our RCIA and other Adult Faith Formation programs at 516-627-0385, ext. 1010. Her office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10:00AM and 4:00PM and other times by appointment.

The Schools of Saint Mary Bishop Barres Makes Pastoral Visit to St. Mary’s

T

he Schools of Saint Mary welcomed the Most Reverend John O. Barres, Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, to campus on May 13, 2022, for a panoramic visit with students, faculty, and administrators. Upon arrival at St. Mary’s, a welcoming committee greeted Bishop Barres, which kicked off the tone for how great the day would be with each passing minute. The first stop on his tour was the elementary school, where he met with administrators and toured the building for an overview of classroom activities and lessons in progress. Even the youngest learners were excited to see our good shepherd as he made his way through the halls. Students presented the Bishop with Spiritual Bouquets and had a chance to interact with him in the classrooms. The spirit-filled tour continued to Immaculata Hall, where the Bishop joined the primary grade students to preview a scene from the middle school’s production of Aladdin Jr., scheduled to open that evening. The cast and crew delighted their audience with their talent. The walking tour continued across campus to Marist Hall, where the Bishop learned first-hand about the successful college placement of soon-to-be graduates of the Class of 2022, who serve as Senior Shepherds at the school. They shared insights about living their faith and serving their community through Campus Ministry. He sat down with student government members to discuss their efforts this past year and future projects in preliminary stages. The NY State Championship Girls Basketball Team enjoyed a discussion about their season and learned of the Bishop’s love for the sport he once played for his alma mater, Princeton University. After engaging in spiritual dialogue with students in their Catholic Convivium Encounter Groups, Bishop Barres sat down for a round-table discussion

“We are grateful to Bishop Barres for his time, wisdom, and prayerful presence.” –Fr. Bob

with faculty members of both the elementary and high school. They each had the opportunity to speak as witnesses to sharing the Gospel and highlighted their innovations for presenting the Catholic faith to students. Fr. Bob noted, “with Bishop Barres on campus, our school community could not have felt more joyful to welcome him for the pastoral visit. I was incredibly proud of our students, who engaged in conversation and spoke of their faith with such love and devotion while representing our schools – our St. Mary’s family. We are grateful to Bishop Barres for his time, wisdom, and prayerful presence.”

Father Dominik “Reflects” on the St. Mary’s High School Senior Trip to Six Flags Great Adventure On Friday, May 6th, the High School Seniors had their class trip to Six Flags Great Adventure. If you have a good memory, you would recall that the forecast was not beautiful blue skies nor sunshine. Someone had mentioned it might have rained. I thought, well, maybe it will only rain for some of the day or perhaps there would be a chance of no rain. I checked with Mr. Cannatella, our Campus Minister, and the forecast said rain, and the chances were not 60% or 70%, it was 100% for the whole day. And in fact, the weatherman was correct. It rained the whole day, but I can say it didn’t take away the fun. With the rain, came no lines, no crowds, no nonsense. We were able to ride the Batman, El Torro, Superman, and Jersey Devil three or four times with almost no wait. The acceleration of the rides came with accelerated heart rates. As the rides ascended to the heights, you could feel the tension of expectation and the fear race through your body. It was exhilarating. I remember towards the end of the day we were on the Batman and after riding it once, we saw there was no one waiting on line. Mr. Cannatella, myself, and the Seniors started to shake our fists and chant, “ONE MORE TIME.” And the conductor smiled and launched us right back up into the sky. The process was repeated two more times. By the end, we were all soaked, but we had a great time. What makes these trips memorable is not the weather, but the moments made with friends.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family? We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo Diocesan Priest, Oblate of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart Montforte Irpino: 11 January 1899 - Rome: 2 May 1934

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Prayers in the Company of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament And have you no thoughts of zeal for Me? Are you not anxious to do a little good for the souls of your friends, for those whom you love, and who, perhaps, have forgotten Me? Tell Me what interests you, what motives urge you, what you yearn for, what means you wish to take. Confide in Me your failures. I will show you the cause. Whom do you wish to see interested in your work? I am the Master of all hearts, my child; and I lead them gently, without damage to their freedom, where I please. I will place about you those who are necessary to you. Never fear! Have you nothing that annoys you? My child, tell Me your annoyances with every detail. Who has pained you? Who has wounded your self-love? Who has treated you contemptuously? Come closer to My Heart that has the balm to cure all of your wounds. Tell Me all, and then say that you forgive everything and forget all, in My likeness; and I will give you My blessing to comfort you. Do you dread something painful? Is there in your soul a vague fear which seems unreasonable, and yet torments you? Throw yourself into My arms and trust fully in My providence. I am with you, here, by your side. I see everything. I hear it all. I will not leave you. Are there about you friends who seem less kind than formerly, who neglect you through indifference or forgetfulness without your having consciously done anything to wound them? Pray for them, and I will restore them to you if their companionship is not an obstacle to your sanctification.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM

Have you no joy to tell Me? Why not confide to Me your pleasures? Tell Me what has happened since yesterday to console you, to make you happy, to give you joy. An unexpected visit has done you good; a fear has been suddenly dispelled; you have met with unlooked-for-success; you have received some mark of affection—a letter, a present; some trial has left you stronger than you supposed. All these things, my child, I obtained for you. Why are you not grateful? Why do you not say, “I thank You?” Gratitude draws benefits, and the benefactor loves to be reminded of his bounty.

Have you no promises to make Me? You know I read the very bottom of your heart. Men are deceived easily, but God is not. Be frank; speak to Me with all sincerity. Are you resolved to avoid that occasion of sin, to give up the object which leads you astray, not to read the book which excites your imagination, to discontinue the relationship with that person who is irreligious and whose presence disturbs the peace of your soul? Will you go at once and be kind to that companion who annoyed you? Well, my child, go now and resume your daily work. But do not forget the minutes we have shared together. Go now and practice silence, modesty, honesty, patience, charity. Love My mother, who is also your mother, the Blessed Virgin, and return again tomorrow, bringing Me a heart even more devoted and loving. Tomorrow I shall have new favors for you. In My Heart you will always find new love, new benefits, new comforts.

“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything.” The Sixth Sunday of Easter | May 22, 2022
