From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
“Go therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19)
On this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, there can be a tendency to reduce it to a day where we just define doctrinal understandings of this great mystery. St. Clement of Alexandria gives us a very concise doctrinal understanding of the Most Holy Trinity. He says, “O mystic marvel! The universal Father is one, and one the Universal Word; and the Holy Spirit is one and the same everywhere.” While the theological understandings of the relationship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit can certainly help us to grasp the meaning of the Trinity, today is first and foremost a day to celebrate the relationship of the “faces” of God to each other and their relationship to us.
In the Old Testament reading from Deuteronomy, the prophet reminds the listeners that this God (Father) they worship has taken them to Himself as His own people. God has made with His people a relationship of intimacy and oneness. Deuteronomy presents a tender image of the Father. He acts for His people “with a strong hand and outstretched arm.” It is a great reminder that God takes an intimate and personal relationship with His people. That no matter where the Hebrew people would go, God would be there for them… walking with them. The relationship that other peoples had with their gods was one of total submission and worship. While we are certainly called and commanded to worship God, our relationship must go beyond simply being submissive and develop into one that responds out of love to this God who created us. We respond in love because God first loved us. So that love then gives sense and reality to the law that has been given to us.
In Jesus, we learn that love commands a giving of self for the good of others. We can never truly speak of Jesus without referencing the cross. For Jesus, the cross is the basis by which we can judge all of Jesus’ actions. The cross reminds us that we can never fully respond to God’s love without willingly emptying ourselves of our own needs so that we can create in us a vision that is “other” centered.
The Holy Spirit is the life-giving force that enlivens our faith. It gives sense, reason, and purpose to our faith. When filled with and open to the power of the Holy Spirit, we as “ordinary” people can do extraordinary things. As St. Paul tells us today in his letter to the Romans, the Holy Spirit offers the power to “cry Abba, Father.” In that profession, fear should be removed because we have been made children of God. As children of God, we are now heirs to the Kingdom of God and all that it entails in our daily life. Pray to the Holy Spirit for the grace to truly profess the Lordship of Jesus.
We can see in the Most Holy Trinity our relationship to them and their relationship to us, but we cannot let this solemnity pass without reflecting on their relationship to each other. Basically and briefly, we see it as an expression of mutual concern, dependency, and openness to the gifts that each has. The Trinity is a constant movement of love flowing from one to the other and of being open to what that love has to offer.
The Most Blessed Trinity, though believed by each of us, is in fact one of the most difficult teachings to explain. Focusing on the relational aspect, while not giving a definitive explanation, it can make it more concrete and keep us open to see the varying aspects by which the Most Holy Trinity wishes to reveal themselves to us.
Next Sunday, June 2nd, is the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. We will honor the Real and True presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. As we prepare for this most joyous celebration, let us continue to reflect on the truth of this wondrous mystery. There will be an outdoor procession with the Blessed Sacrament after the 12:00 Noon Mass next Sunday. All are invited to attend.
In the month of May, I encourage you to pray the Rosary as a family.
In Jesus and Mary, Mother of the Church, Fr. Bob

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY
Kindergarten Students Learn About Our Blessed Mother, Mary
Our Saint Mary’s Elementary School kindergarten students visited the “Mary Garden,” a serene space next to the Church of St. Mary dedicated to our beloved Blessed Mother. The children enjoyed learning about her loving care and kindness. They prayed and sang hymns in her honor, which made the visit more special as they glorified Mary during their outdoor time in the garden. May we all be inspired by Mary’s gentle spirit and unwavering faith, especially during the remainder of May!
All in the St. Mary’s High School Family!
Mrs. Linda Lipani, a proud aunt and faculty member, recently shared this exciting news with us. Earlier this spring, two nieces from her family and our St. Mary’s family were back on campus, marking a significant life event. Julia Fiederlein ’15 and Donato Cipriano ’14, who met while attending St. Mary’s High School and subsequently married, welcomed their first child in the fall. They returned to Manhasset from their home state of Florida to baptize their daughter, Chiara, in the Church of Saint Mary. Little Chiara, baptized by our School Chaplain, Fr. Dominik, is blessed beyond measure because her Godparents are also St. Mary’s alums – and each of her parents’ siblings! This beautiful Catholic faith moment is a testament to the profound impact and lasting connections that the St. Mary’s community fosters in the lives of our students. Congratulations to all, and God bless baby Chiara! Another fun fact is that Mrs. Lipani’s son, Michael, is a graduate of the St. Mary’s Class of 2009 and is also a current faculty member!
Pictured are St. Mary’s alums Alexandria (Allie) Fiederlein ’18, School Chaplain Fr. Dominik Wegiel, Julia Fiederlein ’15, Donato Cipriano ’14, and Dante Cipriano ’17 after the Sacrament of Baptism for Chiara in the Church of St. Mary this spring.

Prayer Service and Inspiring Talk on the Power of the Holy Spirit Draw More than Seventy Participants
In anticipation of Pentecost, Fr. Eddy presented a talk on the Holy Spirit last Thursday evening, May 16th. Entitled “Rekindling the Fire and Power of the Holy Spirit in You,” the talk highlighted the Spirit as a distinct Person of the Holy Trinity, the vector of God’s love, and the active presence of God in the world and in our lives. Fr. Eddy explained that it is through the Holy Spirit and his spiritual gifts that we are guided in truth and understanding, empowered to live a virtuous life, and sanctified to grow in holiness.
The evening also included prayer, hymns, and the Rite of Renewal of Commitment to the Holy Spirit. Nearly seventy attendees renewed their Baptismal promises, invoked the Holy Spirit, and received the laying on of hands from Fr. Eddy. It was an inspiring and powerful evening for all.
Tara Baranello, Theresa Patalano, and Cathy Morrissey helped organize the event.

I consecrate my heart, my body, my tongue, my senses and all my sorrows to the sacred Humanity of Jesus Christ, who consented to be betrayed into the hands of wicked men and to suffer the torment of the Cross for me.
A PRAYER OF SURRENDER TO THE DIVINE WILL
Most holy Trinity, Godhead indivisible, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, our first beginning and our last end, you have made us in accord with your own image and likeness.
Grant that all the thoughts of our minds, all the words of our tongues, all the affections of our hearts, and all the actions of our being may always be conformed to your holy Will.
So may we, having seen you veiled in appearance here below by means of faith, come at last to contemplate you face-to-face, in the perfect possession of you forever in heaven. Amen.

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY, MANHASSET HISTORY ARCHIVES PROJECT
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!
We are still attempting to collect photos, documents, and all kinds of information relating to the history of St. Mary’s, encompassing all aspects of parish activities and ministries, including the Schools of St. Mary’s.
As we look forward to the Centennial celebration of the Elementary School (2026), and the 175th Anniversary of the Parish (2028), our goal is to accumulate not only recent history, but find some missing pieces to fill in the past 170+years.
If you have any of the following from any event, ministry, or of any of the Schools of St. Mary’s, sharing these would be greatly appreciated:
Photos: Celebrations, graduations, sacraments, galas, etc.
Journals, Programs
Announcements (Bulletins not needed)
Newspaper articles
Family remembrances
Information regarding:
The Elementary and High School (s)
Past pastors, priests, nuns, principals, teachers
Clergy & Religious who were parish residents Knights of Columbus, Rosary Society, and other ministries
Any and all of these would be very helpful.
PLEASE NOTE: Any article of information which you wish to be returned can be “digitized” (scanned) and saved, then returned to you. Please include this request with your item with the contact information for its return to you. A box is located in the Parish Office to receive these valuable pieces of our parish’s history.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
