From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And then He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:21-22)

Today ends the holy and life-giving season of Easter. A season that has continued to be filled with both joy and challenges. Today we come to the Solemnity of Pentecost. The feasts of Christmas and Easter so often overshadow the great and wondrous Solemnity of Pentecost. This is not to take away the importance of those two solemnities, but rather to see them in connection with the entire message of salvation history that God has revealed in Jesus. Jesus has risen from the dead and ascended to the Father, and today we mark the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise in the sending of the Holy Spirit upon the believers.

We hear in the Scriptures the marvelous works that were accomplished in the power of the Holy Spirit. People were able to hear the message of the Apostles in their own tongues; they were able to speak in different languages; the sick were healed, the dead raised, and sins forgiven. WOW, how amazing and great is our God that He gives us the ability to act and to do miraculous things in His name! AND that is what we MUST realize…we DO HAVE THAT POWER.

At our baptism, we had the Holy Spirit breathed upon us. And because of that, we can do wondrous things in the name of Jesus. St. Paul tells us today that there are many parts to the Body of Christ; different gifts; various forms of service, BUT one Spirit. These gifts are from God and are called to be used for the glory of His name and for the good of all. What can stymie us, at times, is thinking that our gifts are not important or, even worse, compare them to the gifts others have received. That is certainly the Evil One attempting to chip away at our confidence so that our gifts, instead of being shared, will be hidden away. How sad is that! Sad for ourselves and certainly sad for the Church.

In Jesus, the Father has gifted each of us, and in being gifted, we are called to share those gifts with the community. To be able to do so we must BELIEVE that the Holy Spirit received at that First Pentecost is the same Spirit, in all His power, that we received at Baptism and Confirmation.

When we embrace the Holy Spirit, wonderful things can be accomplished through us. But it takes faith, faith that we do have the Holy Spirit. It takes prayer to open us up to the voice of Jesus and, most importantly, we must believe that we are called and graced by God. A tall order for sure, but so freeing and empowering when it happens. Do not let this Pentecost pass without reflecting on the awesome power of the Holy Spirit that was “breathed on us.” What is the Holy Spirit asking of you today?

As our Elementary School eighth graders and High School seniors prepare for graduation, my prayer for them is that the Lord Jesus may fill them with the Holy Spirit that, in all they do, they profess the Lordship of Jesus.

In Jesus, Fr. Bob

Monday May 29th - Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church

In 2018, Pope Francis declared the Monday after Pentecost the day to celebrate Mary as the Mother of the Church. As Catholics honor Mary as the Mother of the Church, especially being linked to the great Feast of Pentecost, it is a remembrance of Mary’s prayerful presence with the apostles in the upper room. Mary was among them as the Holy Spirit descended upon all on Pentecost. Mary, Mother of the Church, Pray for Us!

PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome! We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.

Today as we celebrate Pentecost, Jesus says to his disciples: “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brought the love and care of Jesus to the poor by assisting families, with food, utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You!

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. Daughters of Mary Inducts Five High School Students

Saint Mary’s High School students work collaboratively in the community through their devotion to our Blessed Mother.

Five young women from the first-year class of St. Mary’s High School were inducted as Daughters of Mary at a recent Mass celebrating new members of St. Mary’s Rosary Society. Caroline Bardi, Emily DeFalco, Saoirse McNamara, Serene Kwon, and Makenna Fay received medals during the Mass as part of the welcoming ceremony. They continued the celebration with the Rosarians at their annual Communion Brunch.

The Daughters of Mary is the Rosary Society’s junior arm. Both groups “foster devotion to Mary through the prayer of the Rosary and good works that would be dear to her heart.” The girls pray the Rosary together twice a month with other St. Mary’s Elementary School graduates who attend Catholic high schools in our diocese. These young women have assisted at an Open House for our Dominican Sisters Mary, the Harvest Festival, Christmas Boutique, and other parish events. Most recently, the young ladies organized, cooked, and served guests at a very successful Lenten Soup Supper for the community, which began with the Stations of the Cross in Church. Proceeds from the event brought over $1,000 in donations to the St. Mary’s Parish Social Ministry outreach program, Good Samaritan House, which in turn provided middle schoolers in an underserved community with personal toiletries and supplies. The next project will focus on introducing the Rosary to elementary-age students. Congratulations, ladies!

For more information on the Daughters of Mary, please contact group leader Mrs. Cathy Morrissey via email: cfmorriss@aol.com.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

The Prayer for the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

O Lord Jesus Christ, Who, before ascending into heaven, didst promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish Thy work in the souls of Thy Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me, that He may perfect in my soul the work of Thy grace and Thy love.

Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal, the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Thy divine truth, the Spirit of Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining Heaven, the Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with Thee, and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation, the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, the Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable, the Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God, and may dread in any way to displease Him.

Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of Thy true disciples and animate me in all things with Thy Spirit. Amen.
