From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love.” (John 15:10)

For the past two weeks we have been reading from St. John’s discourse of love. Today we are told that if we wish to remain in Jesus, we need to keep His commandments. Fair enough, right? So we look at the Ten Commandments and ask ourselves if we obey those commandments from God. I am sure most of us try our best to keep faithful to them, but it is not the only criteria by which we are called to judge our lives. Jesus reminds us that there is another criteria. Actually one that is more difficult because it challenges a mindset and vision that we are called to embrace. “This is my commandment, love one another as I have loved you.” Wow, that packs within it a much more difficult way of living. In one sense, the Ten Commandments are easier - they give us specifics by which to live. This “new” commandment now puts the onus on each of us to live a deeper life in Jesus. How we do that will depend on the areas of weakness in our own life that need the presence and voice of Jesus. To come to that evaluation we will surely need that time in silence with Jesus as we bring to Him our relationship, attitudes, and responses in daily living. In a true sense, it will be more work for us. But that work, if done in truth, will not only make us more fruitful in our relationship to Jesus, but also more effective witnesses and evangelizers of the Gospel we profess.

St. John gives us some great words of encouragement from Jesus. When Jesus tells us that He now calls us friends and not simply servants, we see a deepening of what Jesus calls us to. As friends, we now share in the life of ministry of Jesus. We have not only been given a share in salvation, but have been privileged to share in His ministry, a ministry that has been given to Him by the Father. That includes one in which Jesus lays down His life for His friends. While we may not have to “die” for one another, we called to “live” for one another. We can see in these words that the hurts, needs, and wants of others now become ours also.

Sharing in the ministry of Jesus, we are not only called to love Jesus more fully but that love must take on an action and response to those around us. As Jesus did, we may have to put aside our own needs and comfort at times to serve the needs of others. It means responding in love EVEN to those who do not love us. This is the love that Jesus came to ask us to live. To live the Ten Commandments is easier; yes, it takes less thought in one sense, but the love and attitude that Jesus teaches can bring us to a greater and deeper freedom. When you were baptized, something beautiful happened – God gave you a new nature and, more importantly, filled you with His Holy Spirit so now you are no longer under the control of sinful, selfish human nature. We have been set free to live in freedom to choose the Way of the Lord, which is this commandment to love. So love, lived in truth and freedom, can be so much more fulfilling and freeing. Our sinful passions, as St. Paul reminds us, are put to death in Christ. When these passions, that take control of us and inhibit our freedom, are removed, loving then becomes more natural. Freed, we now have the power and ability to focus our lives on the pattern of the life of Jesus and that peace He offers. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

This past Thursday, we welcomed my cousin Bishop Bob Lombardo, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago, as he came to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to our young people. It was a privilege to have my cousin join us again for this wonderful event. I would like to thank our Director of Religious Education, Mrs. Marie Granieri, for her hard work and that of the office of Religious Education.

In this month of May, I continually recommend praying the Rosary, especially as a family. Let Mary, our Mother, open you even more deeply to the presence of Her Son, Jesus.

Living Stewardship ~ Pillar of Hospitality: Let this week be the week to mend fences with those whom we have a strained relationship with. Also, try to be more empathetic this week—instead of thinking the worst about someone who has wronged you, try to be more forgiving and give them the benefit of the doubt.

Baptism

We celebrate Baptism at 1:30 PM on the second Sunday of the month and at 12:30 PM on the fourth Saturday of the month as scheduled. Please call the Parish Office at least one month in advance to see if a date is available and to arrange to fill out pre-baptismal paperwork. New parents are required to attend a Baptism preparation session held once every month. Those chosen as sponsors for Baptism should lead lives in harmony with the Catholic faith and the role of Godparent.”

Marriage

At least six months before you plan to be married and before you make arrangements for the reception, please make an appointment with one of the priests to begin the necessary preparations.

Children’s Education

Saint Mary’s Elementary School offers excellent education in the spirit of the Gospel from grades N, Pre-K to Eighth grade. For information call 627-0184.

The Religious Education Program provides excellent formation in the Catholic Faith for children in public or private schools. Preparation for First Holy Communion and Confirmation requires two years. Classes are held at St. Mary’s for Grades 1 through 5 on Tuesdays and Thursdays

4:30-5:30 PM. Classes also meet on Sundays from 9:3010:20 AM for Grades 1 through 8 and on Mondays from 7:00-8:00 PM for Grades 6, 7 and 8. Opportunities For Prayer

The Church is open Monday to Friday until 8:45 PM, on Saturday until the end of the 5:00 PM Mass, and on Sunday until 6:00 PM so that we may have the opportunity for quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. The Miraculous Medal Novena is said each Monday following the 9:00 AM Mass. Monday to Saturday the Rosary is said following the 9:00 AM Mass. Eucharistic Adoration is held every Monday from 3:00 to 5:00 PM in the Chapel. On First Saturdays, the Scriptural Rosary is recited following the 9:00 AM Mass.

Cheerful Catholic Academic Rave Reviews for the SMES Special Person Dance

THE SCHOOLS OF ST. MARY

Our young ladies from Saint Mary's Elementary School (SMES) had a special night out at the annual Special Person Dance which was held at Il Bacco Restaurant in Little Neck. Dads, step-dads, uncles, brothers, were among the extraordinary gentlemen invited as guests of the Nursery through Grade 8 girls, who dazzled the dance floor with their SP’s dressed up for the festive occasion. This year's theme was "Come on Barbie, Let's Go Party," and our PTO volunteers did not disappoint with their bright and creative decorations. Their hard work was evident and much appreciated by all in attendance. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the event's success. The memories made that night will certainly last a lifetime!

National Honor Society Hosts Blood Drive

The Saint Mary’s High School National Honor Society (NHS), in collaboration with the New York Blood Center (NYBC), sponsored a school community Spring Blood Drive. Due to the ongoing blood shortage in the local area, the students were compelled to help make a difference in the lives of hospital patients in critical need of blood. In all, NYBC collected 50 pints of blood to help save the lives of 150 patients. We thank our students, faculty, staff, and family members for donating to this drive. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

We are still attempting to collect photos, documents, and all kinds of information relating to the history of St. Mary’s, encompassing all aspects of parish activities and ministries, including the Schools of St. Mary’s.

As we look forward to the Centennial celebration of the Elementary School (2026), and the 175th Anniversary of the Parish (2028), our goal is to accumulate not only recent history, but find some missing pieces to fill in the past 170+years.

How Do We Show Our Gratitude to Mom: By Offering Our Presence

“She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.” (Proverbs 31:26)

Mother’s Day is a holiday that is celebrated throughout the world. Most countries celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May. There are some countries that celebrate at another date. But all in all, Mother’s Day is an important holiday that brings up many feelings for Moms and those who celebrate them.

Motherhood is a lifelong journey. I can remember the minute I became a mom, my entire life changed forever. As I looked at my firstborn, Eric, I knew I was totally responsible for caring for him to adulthood in the best way I knew how. And when my second son, Kevin, was born 18 months later, double the responsibility and love was ever present. As I journeyed with them, I felt I was being given another opportunity to grow up in a different way. I remember saying, “We are growing up together.” Motherhood is filled with much joy and love and is also accompanied by a great deal of work and at times, self-doubt. A good support system can help moms deal with the many challenges of mothering as well as celebrating the many joys of the vocation. This support system can mean just having someone to talk to about what you are experiencing and giving you another perspective. This person can be a friend, family member, or a professional. It is essential to know you are not alone and you can handle whatever you are struggling with.

Mary can be our model in terms of setting the way we think about the mothering journey. Mary kept her child away from evil forces (abusive or violent adults), undisciplined friends, and when related to today’s generation, the negative influence from TV, Internet, and social media. Social media appears to be an influence that many parents are struggling with in terms of parenting. What do expose your child or teen to, for how long, and when to say enough is enough. Mary was demanding of Christ giving a good example to modern day moms to set rules and to insist that they be followed. A demanding youngster becomes an insatiable teen and adult never learning boundaries, limits, and respect for the self and others. We all know the fate of Christ, who died for us, to teach us about living in an orderly and loving manner, to attain our personal salvation. Mary stood steadfast by him every step of the way. So, as many of us know, parenting does not end when your teen goes to college and graduates. A mom is always a phone call away to offer support and wisdom for the rest of your life on earth.

So, Mother’s Day can bring up many feelings. If your mother is living, give her your presence. What does that mean? You can be around the corner, a hundred or thousand miles away, let her know you appreciate all that she has done for you. You can send a gift, or note, but take the time to spend time with her even if by the internet or in person. We all have learned that social contact is so essential to a person’s well-being because of being isolated to varying degrees during the Covid pandemic. It is essential that you give your mother time to connect. A relationship grows with time spent and love and life shared. Tell her what

you are grateful for in terms of your connection to her and being her child no matter what your age.

For some, your mother has passed, and memories of your loss are reinforced. Pray for your moms and pray for the strength to allow your mom to do her job with God. Also, pray for the fortitude to take all that she given to you and use it in your present life as you process and hopefully work through her loss. Mary is the Mother to all and for all. Praying to Mary for direction can keep you focused on the thought and feeling that you are not alone. Mary is always ready to be your mom and offer direction. The way to get Mary’s wisdom and love is just to ask for it. If you are grieving, Mary can comfort you. Praying for connection in your life is a worthwhile effort. If you find yourself getting stuck in grief, join a bereavement group or speak to a priest or psychologist.

Some may think about their mother with feelings of anger, resentment, or sadness because of how they acted or did not act. People ask me, “How can I celebrate this day or my connection with my mom when I am feeling so negative or sad?” If you do not want to celebrate, that is just fine. But do pray that you can work through your feelings of anger and sadness within. If you keep them residing inside of you, their meaning takes on a life of their own within you and before you know it, you are being controlled by forces within you that are destructive to you and those you touch. When we do not address feelings and thoughts within us, we tend to project them onto others and the world can become a less safe environment. As a result, we limit the way we conduct our lives.

Before you know it, you are isolating your feelings from others and living a life of many compartmentalized feelings which can isolate you from experiencing life in a full and authentic way. If you find yourself in this pattern, pray to God and Mary for guidance. If you remain stuck in anger, resentment and sadness, do seek psychological help.

Below is a prayer to Mary to help your journey in your mothering role as well as seeking her wisdom and love.

Mother Mary, I ask for your guidance and wisdom in all that I do. If I doubt myself and my abilities, please offer me the strength to look beyond my weaknesses and to realize that I can do God’s work in my life. By doing this, I can accomplish my job on earth to show my love, discipline, and caring for others as well as myself. I know you are on my side and your support is my backbone when life becomes more challenging that I could imagine. Mother Mary, you are my guide and my strength. Amen.

Religious Education

Teaching little ones about the sacred meaning of the symbols seen on the church altar helps them to grow in the Catholic faith. God’s presence is revealed each time we look upon the holy Tabernacle. Through Fr. Eddy’s catechism lesson, the children learned about the parts of the Liturgy of the Mass. They were quite happy to ask many questions and share their love for Jesus!
