From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners,
“My sheep hear my voice...and they follow me.” (John 10:27) We live in a culture that has so many wonderful advancements in technology. A number of years ago, I was given an iPod as a gift and I love it. It is so convenient to put the headset on and listen to my favorite music wherever I am. It became a great asset when I went away with my classmates. All my music fits in this small little “gadget” - how great is that? I was also able to download my Breviary (the book of prayers and readings a priest must say at certain times of the day). As I looked around the plane, I noticed that many people also had headsets in their ears. They were connected to a variety of games/music/movies and other devices that occupied their time. It certainly helped make the flight go faster. With any wonderful advancement, there also comes concern. At times, I wonder if we can become so accustomed to shutting ourselves away or filling our time with “noise” that it can affect our ability to be comfortable in silence. Of course, there are times when such activities are necessary and useful. The caution should be that we don’t become so dependent on them that we fill any and all down time with noise. As people of faith, we need that time alone with Jesus. The Scriptures remind us that Jesus is our Shepherd and His sheep (us) hear His voice. To know Jesus, we have to become accustomed to moments of silence. It is only in silence that we can hear and listen to the voice of Jesus. He wants to speak to us, to show us the way, but it takes an ability to find that quiet place to allow His voice to resonate within us. It is in these prayer moments wrapped in silence that the Holy Spirit opens the eyes and ears of our hearts. People often come to me wondering why their prayer life is dry and doesn’t seem to bear fruit. Sometimes I notice that prayer is just filling up our time with words, either written in a book or even our petitions to the Lord. While asking Jesus for the needs of our hearts is certainly beneficial and printed prayers can be an aid to deeper prayer, our spiritual life must contain that silent time. The fruit of prayer becomes more alive when we allow Jesus to speak His song of love. This can only truly become our reality when we become comfortable in silence. Spending time with our personal music/games/movies can be enjoyable and relaxing, certainly, but I urge and encourage you to spend quiet time with Jesus. Meditate on Sacred Scripture and allow the Good Shepherd to speak and then you will “hear His voice and follow Him more closely.” In our Elementary School and High School, we have introduced time in silence before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The students come to church and either sit in silence or spend time in guided prayer. Our hope is that our young people may learn to develop the interior life; that is, the place of silence where Jesus can speak to us. In a world that surrounds us with noise, peace can come when we can empty ourselves to be filled with Jesus. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is offered each Monday from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. I encourage you to visit the chapel during this time to sit with Jesus. Also, the Church is open each day until 9:30 PM. Come, stop by, and sit with Jesus. It is a wonderful gift you can give yourself. On April 25th, our parish celebrated confirmation for over 140 students. The confirming bishop was my cousin, The Most Reverend Robert Lombardo. Bishop Lombardo is an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago. It was a pleasure and honor for me to welcome him to our celebration. I am grateful to the teachers, catechists, and the co-principals of our Catholic School. A special word of thanks is offered to our Director of Religious Education, Mrs. Marie Granieri, and her Assistant, Mr. Joseph von Uffel, for the wonderful job they have done in preparing our young people for Confirmation. We are now in the process of celebrating our First Holy Communions. Yours in our Risen Lord, Fr. Bob

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! As we spend the day celebrating the mothers in our lives, let us also remember the special place that the Blessed Mother has in our faith. She can help us find and say yes to God’s calling in our own lives.
The Memorare Remember, O Most Gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known, that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, we fly unto you, O Virgin of Virgins, our mother. To you we come, before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful, O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer us. Amen.
Respect Life Ministry Prayer to the Mother of Sorrows for Mothers Who Have Lost a Child On this day, when we celebrate motherhood and celebrate life, we invite you to remember in a special way those for whom this day will bring sorrow. For mothers who have lost a child in any way – natural or unnatural – at any stage or age, most especially through the tragedies of our times, we invite you to pray for their consolation. Maybe through a Rosary, a decade, or one Hail Mary – or perhaps the Litany to Our Lady of Sorrows (see below) – we can ask Our Blessed Mother to wrap them in her mantle and let them feel her maternal love. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us. Holy Virgin of virgins, Mother of the Crucified, Sorrowful Mother, Mournful Mother, Sighing Mother, Afflicted Mother, Forsaken Mother, Desolate Mother, Mother most sad, Mother set around with anguish, Mother overwhelmed by grief, Mother transfixed by a sword, Mother crucified in thy heart, Mother bereaved of thy Son, Sighing Dove,
Mother of Dolors, Fount of tears, Sea of bitterness, Field of tribulation, Mass of suffering, Mirror of patience, Rock of constancy, Remedy in perplexity, Joy of the afflicted, Ark of the desolate, Refuge of the abandoned, Shield of the oppressed, Conqueror of the incredulous, Solace of the wretched, Medicine of the sick, Help of the faint,
Strength of the weak, Protectress of those who fight, Haven of the shipwrecked, Calmer of tempests, Companion of the sorrowful, Retreat of those who groan, Terror of the treacherous, Standard-bearer of the Martyrs, Treasure of the Faithful, Light of Confessors, Pearl of Virgins, Comfort of Widows, Joy of all Saints, Queen of thy Servants, Holy Mary, who alone art unexampled,
Pray for us. O God, in whose Passion, according to the prophecy of Simeon, a sword of grief pierced through the most sweet soul of Thy glorious Blessed Virgin Mother Mary: grant that we, who celebrate the memory of Her Seven Sorrows, may obtain the happy effect of Thy Passion, Who lives and reigns world without end. Amen – Pope Pius VII

Are You Being Called to Serve? By virtue of our Baptism, we are all called to holiness— the lay faithful as well as Bishops, priests, and deacons. But have you felt called to serve in a much deeper and committed way? If you are a man between the ages of 30 and 60, who feels that you are being called to ordained ministry as a deacon in the Church, you are invited to come for an Evening of Prayer and Discernment with other men of faith to discuss and explore that very question. There is no cost to the evening—just your time and openness.

We thank you and look forward to being with you.
In Session with Dr. Patricia Pitta Women: Sentinels of God Thank you, women who work! You are present and active in every area of life-social, economic, cultural, artistic and political. In this way you make an indispensable contribution to the growth of a culture which unites reason and feeling, to a model of life ever open to the sense of ‘mystery,’ to the establishment of economic and political structures ever more worthy of humanity.” (Pope St. John Paul II, Letter to Women, 1995).
We are the model through our actions with others. We love no matter what happens, but we need to respond in love through leading a disciplined life. What does it mean to lead a disciplined life? It means to be able to demonstrate to yourself and others self-control in thinking and actions. It means to make small sacrifices in the present so the results of these actions can hopefully have a positive outcome in the future. Many of us think sacrifice has no bounds. That is not correct. As in Jesus’ life, he appeared but it was up to those who wanted to be saved to come forward. The same applies in our lives. We can’t make people do what they don’t want to do, but we can open the door to new thoughts, actions, and behaviors. It is up to them to take the lead for their lives.
May is the month of honoring Mary, our Blessed Mother. Mary is the mother to all of us. How lucky are we! Through Mary’s example of self-sacrifice, caring, love, and the loss of her son for the sake of us, she paved a path to show us how to love and care. She also provides a spiritual safety net for us to retreat to when in need. A mother’s wisdom is always available. Mary’s road was paved with love, joy, pain, and success for all of us through providing us a savior who was resurrected to provide a route to offer salvation for all.
In parenting younger children, we do have more control because of the child’s dependency upon us. That is the time to show through your example and discipline how a child needs to develop to become a faithfilled, disciplined and loving member of a family and society.
The role of the modern-day woman can be very different from previous generations. With new opportunities come new challenges that can enhance a women’s life and everyone she touches in thought and deed. Traditionally, women have been given the very special charge of caretaking. We caretake not only in our families, but in many other contexts. This is a gift!
A disciplined mother sets rules, shows others how to do what they don’t know how to do and expects follow through from others. The goals that she sets are realistic so they can be reached, and success can be celebrated. She is not only disciplined for others but first for herself. There is a saying, “Do what I say and not what I do.” A mother must “walk the walk” first to set the example for others.
Women are the “Sentinels of God.” That means one of our jobs is to keep watch that God’s messages and teachings stay alive through our example in family, work, social and community settings.
What an effective and loving mother exemplifies is self-respect and love for others through living a disciplined life that enables her to know when to say no or yes or maybe, when it is appropriate. Of course, there are
times when we must sacrifice for the sake of something better, but it is not forever. When the sacrifice becomes forever, we lose ourselves. We cannot nourish ourselves in the essential ways of life (health, personal development, faith, relationships, career, and relaxation) if our lives are only in the self-sacrifice mode. Another way of looking at discipline is the ability to set boundaries with ourselves and those we touch. I like the saying,” What part of NO do you not understand. The N or the O?” To love in a disciplined way, you need to be able to set the rules, follow through, make adjustments, when necessary, as in breaking habits that do not serve you or others. An important way to attain the awareness of conducting yourself in a disciplined way is to pray where you connect with God and Mary and ask for the ability to control your emotions. This leads to you interacting with others in a loving and disciplined way. Below is a prayer for Mothers to say to help balance your well-being so you can be the best mother you are capable of being. Happy Mother’s Day from the St. Mary’s Mental Health Ministry. Dear Lord and Mary: Lord, you are a father to me, and Mary is my mother. Please bestow upon me the strength to take a deep breath and ask for your guidance when feeling overwhelmed, confused, or just lost. I know through saying this prayer you will enable me to redirect in love and discipline so I may succeed in my responsibility of being an effective woman and mother. Religious Education Dear St. Mary’s Family, Congratulations to our Communicants who received First Eucharist last weekend. Given the blessing of our large parish community, we celebrated the sacrament at both a morning and afternoon Mass. Seeing the children receive the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time brings great joy to us all. We are so grateful to all those who helped with coordinating the beautiful liturgy, especially our Grade 2 teachers, catechists and parish families. We pray that our First Communicants, and those receiving the sacrament on May 14th, will continue to grow in love for Jesus as they receive Him in the Eucharist at Sunday Mass. Blessings, Mrs. Granieri
RCIA and Adult Faith Formation RCIA Group Studies Catholic Social Teaching The RCIA group will study and discuss the role of Catholics in following the Church’s teachings on Social Justice. The church’s social message comes from the understanding that each person is created in God’s image, and what ever their station of life, is a child of God who should have a life of dignity which includes the basic needs of food, clothing, shelter and an income that can support the family. Catholics are called to share their gifts and support the common good of all. Sister Teresa can be contacted about our RCIA and other Adult Faith Formation programs at 516-627-0385, ext. 1010. Her office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10:00AM and 4:00PM and other times by appointment.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament An Adoration Prayer I adore Thee, O Jesus, God of Love, truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I adore Thee, Who has come to Thine own, but was not received by them. I adore Thee, Whom the majority of mankind reject and despise. I adore Thee, Whom the impious incessantly offend by their sacrileges and blasphemies. I adore Thee, Who art grieved by the coldness and indifference even of a vast number of Christians. I adore Thee, O Infinite Goodness, Who hast wrought so many miracles in order to reveal Thy love to us. I adore Thee with all the angels and saints and with those chosen souls that are now already the blessed of Thy Father and are all aglow with burning love for Thee. I adore Thee with all Thy friends, O Jesus! With them I prostrate myself at the foot of the altar, to offer Thee my most profound homage, to receive Thy Divine Inspiration, and to implore Thy grace. Oh, how good it is for me to be here with Thee! How sweet to hear the Voice of my Beloved! O Victim of Divine Love! A piercing cry breaks forth from Thy Heart here on the altar, as once it did on Calvary; it is the cry of Love: “I thirst,” Thou callest to Thy children, “I thirst for your love! Come, all you whom I love as My Father has loved Me; come and quench the thirst that consumes Me!”
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM
Lord Jesus, behold I come. My heart is small, but it is all Thine own. Thou art a prisoner in our Tabernacles, Thou, the Lord of Lords! And love it is that holds Thee here as such! Thou leavest the Tabernacle only to come to us, to unite Thyself with the faithful soul and allow Thy Divine Love to reign in her. O King of Love! Come, live, reign in me. I want no other law but the law of Thy Love. No, no, I henceforth desire to know naught, neither of the world, nor of what is in it, nor of myself. Thy Love alone shall rule in me eternally.
O Jesus, grant me this grace! Break all my fetters, strip me of all that is not Thyself, in order that Thy Love may be my life here below and my happiness and delight in eternity. Amen.
