From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

As I had mentioned on the weekend of September 29th, when I stood before you to explain the Diocesan Bankruptcy Settlement procedure, each parish was asked to contribute money to the fund that would be dispersed to the victims of child abuse from Church personnel. After four long years of difcult negotiations, a settlement has been reached. While the Diocese has worked hard to minimize the efect on the parishes, a new legal ruling from the Supreme Court has made subsidiary corporations; e.g., parishes, responsible for a fnancial contribution.

Our contribution and participation in the Diocesan Bankruptcy benefts St. Mary’s because if we were to litigate the cases on our own, we would face grave danger. Tere are, at present, ten cases of abuse leveled against our parish from the 1960’s to the 1990’s. If you have seen in the news that the Bay Shore School District recently settled with fve plaintifs alleging sexual abuse as children, the settlement was over $20 million, averaging over $4 million per plaintif. Just recently, $25 million was awarded to a victim from the same district. As I mentioned above, St. Mary’s has ten cases against it. Our participation in the diocesan fund settles our ten cases. Also, through our participation, we obtain protection from possible future cases involving similar alleged ofenses occurring before October 1, 2020 if the statute of limitations were to be lifted again.

In light of this information and the number of lawsuits against the parish, we are asked to contribute almost $4.5 million. Tis amount is, at frst glance, shocking and overwhelming (as it is to me), but it is based on the number of cases against the parish and the wealth of the parish. If we were to litigate these cases separately and on our own, it could have a much larger and devastating fnancial efect on our ability to continue the mission of the Church.

Tis money will come from our investments. It represents the results of the support of the faithful over generations. Support that has allowed us to further the mission of the Church and now to also take our share in the responsibility for those whose youth and life were robbed by the heinous acts of Church leaders. Troughout the years, the pastors and Finance Councils of St. Mary’s have invested the parish’s money wisely and carefully. Our pastors have been frugal in spending, resulting in a large reserve for our parish. None of the payments being made for the child abuse cases comes from recent collections. Te amount the Diocese has asked the parish to pay WILL NOT afect our operating expenses nor our ability to minister in the parish or schools. Donations earmarked for the food pantry and assistance to the poor WILL NOT be afected.

Everything about the abuse scandal has rocked religious and secular organizations and is horrible beyond words. Most tragically, innocent young people have sufered terribly and, at times, in silence. People have lost trust in secular and religious organizations whose purpose was to do good. Tose who seek to carry on the mission of service, along with those they serve, bear the burdens of the sins of the past. In this time, the Church and society in general have fnally been forced to recognize the pain abuse victims have sufered, as I mentioned, so often in silence. With this knowledge, new safeguards have been implemented by the Church which include background checks, training, and policies in dealing with minors and the obligation to immediately report any signs of abuse.

For many of us, the thought of what happened under the watch of Church personnel - be it the abuse itself, the failing of some bishops in the past to act as shepherds, leaders who turned a blind eye, and, even worse, those who were not believed - flls us with absolute disgust. For me personally, the memories of those who have been so tragically and heinously hurt cause a deep pain within my soul. At times, the very thought of the abuse flls me with tears and torment for the pain inficted upon these beloved and innocent victims.

As we move forward, we implore the Lord Jesus to guide us, heal us, and protect us. We pray most especially for the innocent victims who were unjustly and brutally robbed of the peace that each person is entitled to. We pray that this settlement may not only fnally give them voice but, in our acknowledgement, be the beginning of the road to healing and wholeness. May God protect and be close to these precious ones and to each of us.

In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

THE NEXT SVDP MEETING IS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13TH, at 7:00 PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome!

We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. Tere are no special qualifcations to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us: “I want you to observe that this poor widow contributed more than all the others who donated to the treasury. Tey gave from their surplus wealth, but she gave from her want, all that she had to live on.” Ask yourself “Am I only giving from my surplus wealth?” and then put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box so that those who are sufering will be able to know God’s love and care.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Tank you for your continued support.

A New Ministry at St. Mary’s: GARDEN CLUB

As many parishioners know, our now-retired Facilities Manager, Vincent Hartley, established and maintained the beautiful seasonal plantings and outdoor decor around our church buildings. Fr. Bob would now like to start a Garden Club to offer parishioners with “green thumbs” the opportunity to select, organize, plant, and maintain garden areas around the church. If you are interested, please contact our Director of Operations, Rob Cammarata, at 516-627-0385, ext 1037 or email him at rcammarata@stmary.ws

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

HOLY HOUR - Part 3

THANKSGIVING

Tank God for the gift of grace poured out by Jesus Christ through Mary, all his blessings in your life, and for the fruits of this Holy Hour. Express your thanks to God in your own words, or you may use the following prayer:

Te Deum

O God, we praise you: we confess that you are Lord. All the earth worships you, O everlasting Father. To you all angels, all heaven and all powers, To you the cherubim and seraphim proclaim without ceasing:

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of your glory.

Te glorious choir of Apostles, the praiseworthy assembly of prophets, and the white-robed host of martyrs praises you. Troughout the world the holy Church confesses you: the Father of unbounded majesty, your venerable true and only Son, and the Holy Spirit, Paraclete.

O Christ, you are the King of glory; You are the coeternal Son of the Father. For the sake of liberating man you did not disdain the Virgin’s womb. Having conquered the sting of death, you opened the kingdom of heaven to believers.

You sit at God’s right hand, in the glory of the Father. You are expected to come as Judge.

Terefore, we beg you, help your servants whom you redeemed by your blood; make them numbered with your saints in everlasting glory.

Good Samaritan House

SHARE CHRISTMAS

“Blessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble, the Lord delivers him.” (Psalm 41:1)

Tis is the 28th year that St. Mary’s Good Samaritan House will be supporting local families who struggle to provide a traditional Christmas for their family members. Our support for these families, of course, includes providing food for them. But we also like to provide gifts for them and their children. Many of these families rarely have the disposable income to purchase special gifts for themselves or those they love. Tey are truly struggling every month just to make ends meet, some months they have more success than others.

We are ofering a couple of ways for our parishioners to help these families have a less stressful holiday if they choose to. Our ofce really appreciates donations in the form of gift cards. Tis allows us to shop for individuals around the holidays, tailoring their gifts to best meet their needs. Any leftover gift cards are used throughout the year to support these families with needed items. An example of when we would use a leftover gift card is around September for a single mom to buy shoes for her children before school. Suggestions for gift cards that would make wonderful gifts include:

St. Mary’s Celebrates Annual All Souls’ Day Remembrance Mass for the Beloved Dead of the Parish

Tere were many families and Consolation Ministers at the annual All Souls’ Day Remembrance Mass for the deceased whose funeral Masses were celebrated at St. Mary’s since All Souls’ Day 2023. Tose who had died elsewhere during this period were also remembered at this Mass at the request of their loved ones.

Father Bob gave a comforting homily about grief and the question, “Do you believe?” that Jesus asked Martha at the death of her brother, Lazarus.

Father Rafal and Father Anthony concelebrated the Mass.

Consolation Ministers served as Lector and Altar Server and read the names of the beloved dead at the Mass which took place on Saturday, November 2nd, at 10:00 AM.

Tis prayerful Mass means so much to the Consolation Ministry (many of the members are pictured above) and allows the members to have an annual gathering and be part of the “Perfect Prayer”- the Mass, that we can share together as a Ministry.

Parishioners: Please know that this Special Ministry always welcomes new members. If you are interested, please leave your name and phone number at the Parish Ofce and a member of the Consolation Ministry will contact you.

Remembering the Saints

Te word “saint” comes from the Greek word hagios, which means “consecrated to God, holy, sacred, pious.” Saints are those who we strive to be and when we miss the mark, are who we can talk to in prayer when we need guidance. Te Virgin Mary, the Mother of God is the greatest of all the saints. She was, after her Son, exalted by divine grace above all humanity and the angels.

Several students made a blessed “saintly” appearance at the 10:30 AM Mass last Sunday. Fr. Bob welcomed St. Francis, St. John the Baptist, St. Luke, and St. Michael the Archangel. Each shared something special about their mission in the world. We are all called to be saints, to increasingly allow our daily life to refect the perfect love of Christ.

Today is Pope St. Leo the Great’s feast day. He was very pastoral and devoted to “keeping” the vineyard of the Lord. Let us say a prayer of gratitude for Pope St. Leo’s life and work to protect the Church against false teachings. Ora pro nobis!

“Virtue is nothing without the trial of temptation, for there is no confict without an enemy, no victory without strife.” - Pope Saint Leo the Great Tank you, parents, for the beautiful example of the saints seen through the eyes of your children.

Blessings, Mrs. Granieri
