They need food assistance all through the year but especially during the holiday season. Good Samaritan House is hosting a “drive-through holiday food drop” with the goal of collecting the freshest possible food items to allow our neighbors suffering in poverty to enjoy a true feast with their families on Thanksgiving. We will be hosting this drive-through collection on Monday, November 6th from 4:00 PM - 800 PM. This drive through collection will take place in the parking lot behind the church. Unfortunately, for these families this holiday meal is only that - a one day meal. While we hope it will be very enjoyable for them, they still need food assistance throughout the rest of the month and into next year. The St. Mary’s community does a wonderful job of supporting these families, but we are asking for a little extra at this difficult time. If you are able to provide grocery store gift cards to the parish social ministry office, they would be put to good use providing much needed food to these families during the holidays and into next year. In addition to grocery store gift cards, we provide non-perishable food items to all our families throughout the year. Please consider donating any non-perishable food you can. We are always in need and nothing goes to waste. Thank you in advance for your continued generosity and may God bless you and your family over this holiday season and in 2024.

Rosary Society The Daughters of Mary y

The Daughters of Mary are a group of young women in our parish who honor the Blessed Mother. After being disbanded for about fifteen years, the Rosary Society’s “junior” group was restarted in 2022 under the supervision of past presidents Cathy Morrissey and Anne Welsh. Since its revitalization, Cathy and Erin Morrissey McNamara have lead the charge and hosted various events with the girls. This year we are pleased to announce that the group has expanded to include three groups of young ladies. The first includes the original nine girls, who have been inducted into the Rosary Society and are currently sophomores at various Catholic High Schools. The second is a new group functioning as a school club under the guidance of Sr. Mary Magdalene. It is open to all girls at St. Mary’s High School. They meet weekly on Tuesday before school in their new chapel. The third group consists of St. Mary’s Middle School girls in the 7th and 8th grades. With the support of Mrs. Kemp, Sr. Lucy will lead this group, introducing the girls to Our Blessed Mother, what the devotion entails, and how we honor her through service. This past Sunday, the Daughters of Mary honored their commitment to both prayer and service after the Noon Mass. They attended the Musical Rosary in honor of Our Blessed Mother’s special month. After the Rosary, the girls got a jump start on the Thanksgiving Food Drive by stocking up on non-perishables at King Kullen. With their donations, they were able to fill up seven bags of groceries and goodies for neighbors in need through Good Samaritan House. This year, under the guidance of Erin McNamara and Laura Sciametta, the daughters will be hosting their Lenten Soup supper on Friday, March 15, 2024. While Lent is several months away, please save the date and show your support by attending. Look out for updates after the new year. If you know of a young woman who might be interested in joining The Daughters of Mary, please send an email to rosarysociety@stmary.ws.

Catholic Academic Cheerfu f l

ST. MARY’S HIGH SCHOOL

St. Mary’s Shines at Long Island University’s “National Civics Day” On Friday, October 27, 2023, seventeen juniors and seniors from St. Mary’s participated in the “National Civics Day” sponsored by Long Island University (LIU) at their White House Replica on the Brookville campus. Among the other schools participating were St. Dominic’s High School, Islip High School, Levittown High School, Baldwin High School, Lawrence High School, Garden City High School and Locust Valley High School. Each school was required to choose a president and cabinet members and then review and decide policy for three scenarios: (i) whether to adopt geoengineering to address climate change; (ii) whether to ban TikTok for national security reasons, and (iii) whether to continue to send military aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia. To inform the students’ cabinet decision making, LIU supplied each team with even-handed, in-depth background materials.

The press release from LIU captured the uniqueness of the conference perfectly. “Students of all ages dream of becoming president of the United States one day, but few have the opportunity to sit at the resolute desk or engage in an award-winning situation room role playing experience to fully understand what it means to be president. Now you can at the White House Experience High School Showcase at Long Island University on National Civics Day!” Led by our History Department chair, Mr. Brendan Gilroy, our St. Mary’s team chose Miss Abby Guiheen SMHS ’25 as their president and discussed the pros and cons of all the scenarios before deciding on a policy for each. Once St. Mary’s policy positions were in place, Miss Guiheen presented them in a simulated press conference before all the participating schools. Fielding questions from other teams present, she defended St. Mary’s policy positions with remarkable poise and acuity. Mr. Gilroy noted that a LIU facilitator took him aside after the event and congratulated him on the impressive performance of the St. Mary’s team, telling him that “our students came better prepared than the other schools and it truly showed in how well we worked together and formulated our policies in response to the scenarios.” For Mr. Gilroy, the upshot of the day was clear: “We should all be so proud of our students for the way they handled themselves!” As we all know, there is a crying need for good civics education in our country to prepare students to exercise their civic duties responsibly. St. Mary’s is deeply grateful to LIU for giving Mr. Gilroy and his talented students the opportunity to engage in issues that have such an important impact on the interests of all Americans – and indeed all peoples from around the world. St. Mary’s prizes critical thinking and critical discourse, and both were on abundant display throughout the conference. A great learning experience was had by all!

The Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time | November 5, 2023

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament To the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Heart of Jesus in the Eucharist, I adore You. Sweet Companion of our exile, I seek You. Holy God become man, I beat with Your Heart. Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, solitary, abandoned, humiliated, cursed, despised, outraged, ignored by men, have mercy on us. Lover of our hearts, pleading for Your beloved, patiently waiting for us, eager to hear our confidences, desirous of our devotion, have mercy on us. Heart of grace, silent and wishing to speak, Refuge of the hidden life, Sharer of the secrets of union with God, Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Exposition and Adoration Jesus, Victim, I want to comfort You. of the Blessed Sacrament I unite myself with You. with Closing Benediction I offer myself in union with You. Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM I count myself as nothing before You. in the Church I desire to forget myself and think only of You, to be forgotten and rejected for love of You, not to be understood, not to be loved, except by You. I will hold my peace that I may listen to You. I will forsake myself in order to be lost in You. Grant that I may quench Your thirst for my salvation, Your burning thirst for my sanctification, and that, being purged, I may give You a true and pure love. I no longer want to deny Your expectations. Take me. I give myself to You. I entrust to You all my actions and thoughts -- my mind, that You may enlighten it, my heart, that You may fill it, my will, that You may establish it, my soul and body, that You may feed and sustain them. Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, Whose Blood is the life of my soul, may it no longer be I who live, but You alone Who lives in me.

A Eucharistic Prayer Heavenly Father, increase our faith in the Real Presence of Your Son Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. We are obliged to adore Him, to give Him thanks and to make reparation for sins. We need your peace in our hearts and among nations. We need conversion from our sins and the mercy of Your forgiveness.

A Prayer to our Eucharistic Lord Hail to thee, true body born From Virgin Mary’s womb! The same that on the cross was nailed And bore for man the bitter doom. Thou, whose side was pierced and flowed Both with water and with blood; Suffer us to taste of thee, In our life’s last agony. O kind, O loving one! O sweet Jesus, Mary’s Son!

She is already negotiating the Missalette as she attends Sunday Mass and responding with enthusiasm to her weekly lessons on the teachings of the Church. The Sunday Program explains and reflects on the readings of the Mass of the day and at the same time she is learning about the Bible. Know anyone who would like to join her? There’s still plenty of room at the table. Sister Teresa can be contacted about our RCIA and other Adult Faith Formation programs at 516-627-0385, ext. 1010. Her office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM and other times by appointment.

Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time “Share the Gospel and share your very selves as well.” 1 Thessalonians 2:8-9: “With such affection for you, we were determined to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our very selves as well, so dearly beloved had you become to us. You recall brothers and sisters, our toil and drudgery. Working night and day in order not to burden any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. As a couple, you can proclaim the Gospel of God and share your very selves with one another. Attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter can make your marriage even better. What is a Knights of Columbus Family? We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith. Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world. It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice. Become a Knights of Columbus family.
